What are the different career options?• There are now more than 200 Apprenticeships

available in over 80 career areas;• Every year 2500 young people in Hertfordshire start

an Apprenticeship scheme• Government aspirations by 2020 for 1 in 5 young

people (currently 1 in 15)

How are they delivered?• Day release

• Apprentice visits Training Provider one day per week/month

• 100% Workplace• Training Provider visits workplace

• Block release• Apprentice studies for a block of 1 or 2 weeks at a time

How does an student find an employer?

What will an Apprentice earn?• The majority of Apprentices are employed full time• On the 1st October 2010 the Government introduced

a new minimum of £2.50 per hour• Usually start at £95 - £100 per week• Average weekly salary of £175 (2010 survey)

Monday 28th March there were 386 live vacancies within Hertfordshire

Starting weekly salaries ranging from

£95 to £237.20

When can an Apprenticeship start?• Apprenticeships can be started at any time

throughout the year, as long as you have finished full-time education (first Monday in July)

• Start speaking to providers and employers early, don’t leave it until the end of the year

• Jobs are advertised from March onwards for September starts

Key messages for students?• Register on Apprenticeship Vacancies• Look at the wide range of Apprenticeships available• Concentrate on the application form (4000

characters to describe strengths)• There is huge competition for jobs (40 – 80

applications per vacancy)

complete a Young Apprenticeship in Customer Service (yr 10 and yr 11)

50 days (1 day per week at The Body Shop)Received a Level 1 and 2 NVQ in Customer Service, Key

Skills, Manual Handling Certificate and a 1st Aid CertificateFrom this I also received a Saturday job

Advice about progressionSchool wanted me to do A Levels and go to University…but I didn’t like the style of learningSpoke to Connexions Advisor, Form Tutor, College open

evenings, Head of Year 11, ParentsOnly one subject I wanted to study at A Level (IT) but it

got dropped because of lack of interestPreferred to be out and about with lots of varietyEarning a salary was an incentive

Apprenticeship Vacancy WebsiteMy Connexions Advisor told me about the website and

what kind of vacancies could be on itI applied for a few vacancies, one being at KEITS. I went

for an interview and I got the job at KEITS and I started there in November 2009

2 of my colleagues also applied through the Apprenticeship Vacancy website and were successful

What I'm doing nowI’ve nearly completed my Advanced Apprenticeship in

Business Administration (Level 3)Had 3 pay rises since starting L2I’m attending events like these and talking to people like youI assist my colleagues in sign upsI am now mentoring other Apprentices that

work alongside meHoping to start L4 Higher Apprenticeship in

Business and then go onto L5 (degree equiv)All by the time I’m just turning 20!

My advice to othersDon’t dismiss Apprenticeships as only being for drop outsThey are a good way to get startedMake sure you help your students to really explore their

options and choose the right path for themBe honest and encouragingGetting a job is something to be proud of
