DON'T MISS!

"Somebody Come and Play": 45 Years of Sesame Street Helping Kids Grow Smarter, Stronger, and Kinder PAGE 8

Dear friends,

When I first came to work at the Library for the Performing Arts, I was greeted with a dozen roses in every color with a note from Mezzo-Soprano Joyce Castle. It read: “Welcome to our Library. Please take good care of it for us.” I immediately realized the importance of this place to so many of you. LPA is truly where the performing arts live. Since we want to be the best we can be, we continue to build on our world-class research and circulating collections, create exhibitions that bring our collections to life, and present free public programs that both entertain and educate.

I am delighted to be working with such creative individuals who want very much to share with you all that the performing arts have to offer. This season you can experience the magic and creativity of Sesame Street through a series of programs and films that we developed to enhance and further enliven our “Somebody Come and Play”: 45 Years of Sesame Street Helping Kids Grow Smarter, Stronger, and Kinder exhibition. You can be among the first to see and hear young artists destined for great careers through our Songbook: Broadway's Future series. We have added a first-floor Café which is available during the day for food and drink. On select mornings and evenings, the Café is transformed into a comfortable space where you may find cabaret performances as well as programs that involve you in the artistic process. Our goal is to captivate your imagination, and offer you the opportunity to explore our extraordinary dance, music, theater, film, and recorded sound collections.

It is such a pleasure to present you with this brochure full of so many wonderful free options that you can experience here. Please do come by as often as you can, and if you are not already a Friend of LPA, please consider becoming one. You can help us make a difference for the artistic community of hopefuls and established artists as well as life-long learners in the arts.

"The New York Public Library for the Performing Arts is an essential resource for artists. Recently, in preparation for my return to the role of Emcee in Cabaret, I spent an afternoon at the Library at Lincoln Center reminiscing and familiarizing myself with the 1998 production and also found inspiration and insight from the collections of other artists who have created or been involved in this amazing musical."

Works & Process, the performing arts series at the Guggenheim, has championed new works and offered audiences unprecedented access to leading creators and performers. Taking place in the Guggenheim’s intimate Frank Lloyd Wright–designed 285-seat Peter B. Lewis Theater, New Yorkers have been able to see, hear, and meet the most acclaimed artists in the world, in an intimate setting unlike any other.

For the 30th anniversary season, Works & Process celebrates an ongoing partnership with The New York Public Library for the Performing Arts by showcasing the Works & Process video archive, spanning three decades and over 481 programs, all housed in LPA’s Jerome Robbin’s Dance Division. The photographs, costumes, and printed ephemera from past Works & Process programs included in the exhibition hint at the rich materials that are housed, easily accessed, and viewed at LPA.

This Works & Process exhibition is made possible with the assistance of The Ford Foundation and Rockefeller Brothers Fund.

Come play and discover things you never knew about everyone’s favorite street –

Sesame Street. Sesame Street transformed television by proving it was possible to

produce a show that was both educational and entertaining for children. A collaboration

of Sesame Workshop and The New York Public Library for the Performing Arts, this

exhibition gives fans of all ages the opportunity to experience what it’s like to create

an episode of the show and get close to their fuzzy and furry friends from the street.

For more than four decades Sesame Street has been helping kids grow smarter,

stronger, and kinder with the help of beloved Muppets like Elmo and Grover and its

signature blend of animation, music, and humor. Sesame Street teaches not just ABCs

and 123s, but life lessons ranging from health and nutrition to cooperation, friendship,

and diversity. The children’s program is celebrating 45 years on television with this

interactive behind the scenes look at the show.

Learn how show segments start with an educational foundation and the process from page to screen. Scripts, storyboards, lead sheets, designs, and scores from the archives of Sesame Workshop and the Library for the Performing Arts illustrate how Sesame Street enhances early childhood education with the highest of production values. See behind the scenes footage, animation cels, photographs, blueprints, and an architectural model of the set from the early 90’s. Get up close with Elmo, Oscar, Grover, and other favorite characters. Watch show highlights, a retrospective of many of the celebrities and notable people that have visited Sesame Street, and special appearances over the years. Check out Sesame Street products from record albums to toys and clothing. View Sesame Street book art and original art from a Sesame Street newspaper comic. Learn about Sesame Street international programs and view Muppets from other countries. Snuffy and Super Grover welcome visitors to a child-friendly area for reading Sesame Street books, creating art projects, and playing with Sesame Street games, apps, and e-books.

Storytelling

SEPT 19

Martin P. Robinson

With its elaborate stages and celebrity casts, New York’s Broadway theater district is one of the most popular destinations in the United States, drawing more than 11 million visitors annually from around the world. When we hear the word “Broadway,” we remember the stars, the costumes, the sets, and the stories. But who are the people behind these magical performances?

What happens behind the scenes of a Broadway production? Broadway Revealed answers these questions and shines the limelight on the men and women who make it all happen. The exhibition showcases artist Stephen Joseph’s sweeping images of studios, designers, and workshops, revealing the process and complexity of creating theater. From Michael Mayer’s Tony-nominated American Idiot to Julie Taymor’s controversial Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark, these panoramic photographs present a stunning portrait of these geniuses at work.

The exhibition was organized by Bedford Gallery, Lesher Center for the Arts, Walnut Creek, CA. The exhibition's presentation in New York was funded in part by the Jerome Robbins Foundation.

The exhibition will offer a glance into two different representations of the juxtaposition of American choreographers and Israeli dance: known choreographies performed by Batsheva's dancers and original choreographies that were specifically created for the company. These two kinds of meetings carry out an artistic dialogue between American concepts and Israeli culture. Through the choreographies, one can see the company's local and global characteristics, which places Batsheva Dance Company as a microcosm of Israeli culture.

This exhibition is a project of the Israeli Dance Archive at the Beit Ariela Library, Tel Aviv – Yafo, The New York Public Library for the Performing Arts, and Israel's Office of Cultural Affairs, Consulate General of Israel in New York.

THURS, DEC 4 | 6 PM

In a stunning 1956 New Yorker piece, Hannah Arendt declared that Brecht “staked his life and art as few poets have ever done.” For this evening, writer and director Tony Kushner, awarded the Pulitzer Prize for Angels in America and a National Medal of the Arts Award by President Obama, gathers actors for a riveting performance of the Brecht's love poems, representing work between 1918 and 1955 that often scandalized the

German reading public with the force of Eros. Like Goethe, Brecht was always in love with various women, and as his daughter, Barbara Brecht-Schall, who will be present, writes in her preface to the collection this evening celebrates, “he was faithful to each of them.” Presented by the Poetry Society of America.

The musical activities of Emily Dickinson — playing piano, collecting sheet music, and attending concerts — reveal much about the cultural offerings available to a woman of her time, place, and class. Dickinson’s encounters with the music-making of her family servants and the New England hymn tradition had a deep influence on her personality and writing. Using Dickinson’s letters, poems, and the Library’s collections, Music Division Chief George Boziwick and The Red Skies Music Ensemble illustrate how Dickinson was able to use these experiences to fashion a unique musical, poetic voice.
