Charlecote’s Jubilee Celebrations (and a unique solution to the shortage of public
transport!) Seventy people, aged from one to ninety three,
celebrated Her Majesty the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee in
grand style on Saturday, 2 June. The proceedings started with the taking of a Village Photograph, which will be
displayed in the Village Hall. A Champagne Reception
followed, when John Lampitt paid tribute to the Queen and proposed the Loyal Toast. A delicious “bring and
share” lunch followed, prizes were awarded for the best
“red, white and blue” outfits, and the youngsters released
a helium balloon each, which were last seen floating high in the sky towards Hampton Lucy. (Hmm! – Ed.)
The party then moved over to The Malt House field
where, fortified by a barrel of beer and a Jubilee Cake, huge fun was had by all, with games, sack races, egg and
spoon, wheelbarrow races, a Tug o’ War, ‘rounders’,
and even a race for the dogs, won by Crumble Smith, despite the fact she was by far the smallest competitor! Two enduring legacies of the Diamond Jubilee will be the village
flagpole, and the wall-hanging, the latter featuring twenty five scenes of Charlecote, to be worked in wool by residents of
the village and assembled into a panel. This will then take pride of place in the village hall. Very many thanks to
everyone for making this such a memorable and enjoyable occasion. HH

A Letter From Her Majesty The Queen Hampton Lucy C. of E. Primary School and Nursery sent a Hampton Lucy Jubilee Mug, designed by pupil Honor
Pepperell, as a gift to Her Majesty, enclosing two letters, one from the children and a second from Mrs Sue Main,
Chairman of the Parish Council. This reply was received, bearing the crest of Buckingham Palace and dated 7 July, 2012. Dear Mrs Main, The Queen wishes me to write and thank you for your recent letter, sent on behalf of Hampton
Lucy Parish Council, on the occasion of Her Majesty’s Diamond Jubilee. The Queen was pleased to hear of the events
being organised in Hampton Lucy to celebrate her Diamond Jubilee and touched by your kind thought in sending her a
mug, designed by Honor Pepperell, which will also be given to each of the children attending the Village’s Street Party.
I am to thank you for your message of good wishes to Her Majesty in this, her Diamond Jubilee year.
Yours sincerely, Richenda Elton. (Lady-in-Waiting)

The Parish Letter
Dear Friends,
A few months ago I explained that I would be taking a sabbatical later in the year. This will start at the
beginning of August and I will resume my duties at the
beginning of November. So this is my last letter before I stop work for that period. During my time off, under
Cathy’s leadership, the Readers, Churchwardens, PCC
members and other Church members, assisted by a small team of visiting priests - Christopher Lamb,
Heather Turner and Mary Crameri, will maintain and
develop the life of the Church, just as they would if I
was leaving to take up a new role.
It will no doubt be rather strange for many of them to be
taking on new roles and tasks – just as it will be for me
after 15 years ministering in Barford, Sherbourne and Wasperton, and nearly five also ministering in
Charlecote, Hampton Lucy and Loxley, to lay aside
those responsibilities and tasks for a period of time. Perhaps it will be a little like the experience of
retirement for some people. There will be a degree of
freedom and the opportunity to do things I choose to do
rather than things that are required of me. I will no doubt enjoy that immensely; but perhaps I shall also
miss the sense of being needed by people at times. I
may even feel very unimportant. That could be good for
developing humility!
The Bishop does not require anything in particular of
priests taking sabbaticals. We don’t have to do something worthy or write a report. As I mentioned last
time, I hope to spend a part of the time following the
Santiago de Compostella pilgrimage route across northern Spain, but much of the time will be for resting,
reading, praying, playing, taking more exercise and
generally putting myself back together after what has, at times, been a difficult few years.
Hopefully I will return refreshed and ready to pick up my
role again with renewed energy and enthusiasm. At the time this appears in print I will still have a month to go
before I finish on Saturday, 4th August, so until then I am
still in my role. If you see me after that I will still be
David Jessett, but I will need to refer you to someone else for matters relating to the Churches of our Benefice.
I am sure you will understand.
Meanwhile, may I wish you all a happy Summer, (if it ever comes!), and Autumn.
With best wishes,
David Jessett.
Jubilee Bells at St. Leonard’s Church, Charlecote Twenty seven people, ranging in age from four to, at a guess, seventy four, took turns at ringing the bells at St Leonard’s Church, Charlecote at 3.00pm on Sunday, 3 June, when we joined in with thousands of other peals of bells across the nation to celebrate Her Majesty’s Diamond Jubilee. Seven of our erstwhile campanologists were Chinese language students from Warwick University who happened to be visiting Charlecote on the day. They couldn’t have imagined that when they set out in the morning, and took many photographs to record the experience and to show their friends and family back home. SL
Charlecote Festival Singers, Sunday, 1 July, St Leonard’s Church A special celebration for the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee will take place at Charlecote Church at 10.30am on Sunday, 1 July, when The Festival Singers will present a variety of music, sacred and secular, during our usual morning service. SL
The 3P Prayer Group The 3P Prayer group will meet at the home of Janet and Duncan Fairfax-Lucy on Thursday, 19 July, at the earlier time of
7.30pm. There are no Prayer Group meetings arranged for August. AB
Following the awful weather for the Thames Water Pageant, the morning of Monday, 4 June, dawned bright and dry for
the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee in Hampton Lucy. The village
was resplendent with bunting and large Union Flags strung across Church Street, and the area around the school was
beautifully decorated with flags and bunting, much of it
made by the pupils and parents. A real community event!
Kate Evans, with her platoon of helpers from the village and
the Friends of the School, did a magnificent job preparing a
street party feast for a hundred youngsters. The King and
Queen for the day, Fiona and Edward, preceded by the ponies and Scottish Piper Bill Gibson, led the children, most
of them in fancy dress, as they paraded through the village
to the tune of Teddy Bear’s Picnic. A lively show by Andy Kirk entertained the children (and adults) before they all
moved down to the splendid tea table with Union Flag
drapes, golden thrones for the Royal Couple and lashings of
food and drink provided by the parents on a ‘Bring and Share’ basis. Everyone enjoyed the rest of the party as it
unfolded, with tea and cakes by the WI, Ally Speller’s
Model Circus and fairground organ, maypole dancing, fun and games in the school field, free pony rides, a treasure
hunt, and the freedom to run around a village without cars.
Three hundred residents, families and friends came along to
the ‘Picnic in the Street’, and there was a great party
atmosphere. Grovefields Hamlet deservedly carried off the champagne prize for the ‘Best Dressed Picnic Table’, and the
Royal Worcester Jubilee plate for the ‘Best Dressed House’ was
won by Christine and Derrick of 7, Stratford Road. Masterjam
provided great entertainment, playing music from the 60s to the present day to satisfy most tastes, with grown-ups and children
dancing into the night.
Unfortunately, the master of ceremonies rather lost control of the Tug o’ War during the interval. Hampton Lucy and
Valefresco found their teams boosted by numerous enthusiastic
tuggers and the rope finally gave up the unequal struggle.
Despite the piles of giggling bodies scattered around there were no injuries, other than the odd bruised bottom, and a draw was
declared.
After more enthusiastic dancing in the street and an impromptu
conga, the evening moved to its finale at 10.00pm with a torch-lit parade to the beacon and fireworks, once more accompanied
by the piper, where we sang the National Anthem, saluted the
Queen with three rousing cheers and parted with a chorus of Auld Land Syne. Amazingly, everyone was up bright and early
to put Hampton Lucy back together again and by 11.00am the
village was back to its sleepy old self again. An enormous
‘thank you’ goes out to the many people who helped to make it a day to remember for a long, long time, especially for the
children, who were indefatigable! AJW

At 5.00pm on Wednesday, 6 June, a group of our members were outside Hampton Lucy
Village Hall to receive the Warwickshire WI
Olympic Baton from Wellesbourne WI. It
arrived in style, led by two of their members riding a tandem, and was handed over to our President, Jeryl Stone, by her
opposite number from Wellesbourne, Anne Hepworth. We
then enjoyed a very sociable afternoon tea with them. The following morning the baton was on its way again. Classic
cars, with the cars and occupants dressed in red, white and
blue, formed a cavalcade to deliver the baton to Ashorne Village Hall, where it was passed on to the President of
Ashorne and Newbold Pacey WI, Sue Byrd. In true WI
fashion, morning coffee, tea and cakes were then enjoyed by
all present. The National Anthem was sung in recognition of the Diamond Jubilee, followed by a chorus of Happy
Birthday to Sue Byrd. The June meeting was Members’
Night, when the committee could take a back seat. After the routine business was closed with ‘Jerusalem’, a convivial
cheese and wine supper was served by the members. The
next meeting will be on Wednesday, 4 July, in Charlecote Village Hall when the topic of a talk by Julie Turner will be
‘Wild Life Gardening’. MJW
Wellesbourne & District Lions Club A big “thank you” goes to everyone who supported the Jubilee Fun
Day at Loxley Fox on Monday, 4 June. After a full Sunday of
Britain’s finest precipitation, we were blessed with the best weather of the long weekend. Everybody seemed to enjoy the day, with many
staying on for the evening to be entertained by the excellent local band ‘Cactus
Jam’. Takings for the event are still being reconciled and I will report the amount raised in a later newsletter. Wellesbourne Lions are pleased to have been invited to
Barford Fete on Saturday, 7 July, and Walton Fete on Sunday, 29 July. We hope
you will be able to come along to one or both of these annual events and look forward to meeting you there. Sadly, as you
know by now, the Raft Race has been postponed until September due to the river conditions. More details later. AS
Loxley WI The annual joint resolutions meeting with Ashorne WI on 10 May approved a proposal calling upon the
Government to safeguard the standards of midwifery. The presence of midwife Karen Barber to answer
questions was much appreciated. There was also an enjoyable demonstration of spinning by Aileen Pearson. It was a pleasure, as always, to enjoy the company of our generous Ashorne hosts. On 6 June, the
WI 'Olympic Baton', which has been progressing throughout the county, was brought from Kineton to Loxley. Committee
members celebrated the occasion with coffee and cake by the kind invitation of our chairman, Margaret Buckingham. The baton was then taken on the next leg of its journey to Wellesbourne WI. The meeting on 16 June was a Greek-style
luncheon party, celebrating our 60th birthday, at the home of Chris Osborne. On 10 July, (please note change of date,)
there is an outing to the Hill Close Gardens in Warwick, next to the racecourse, meeting there at 2.00pm A guided tour will
be followed by afternoon tea in the cafeteria. Finally, on 14 July, the quilting group 'The Loxley Cotton Reels' are staging
another exhibition of work by popular request, to be held in Loxley Church from 3.00 pm to 5.30pm. MC
Loxley School Federation Consultation For the past few months, the Governors at Loxley Primary School have been exploring the possibility of Federation and
have now voted to proceed to a Formal Consultation. The proposed Federation is between Wilmcote, Snitterfield and Loxley Schools and will mean that, from January 2014, the three schools will share a single Governing Body and
Executive Head-teacher but remain as separate schools and retain their own identity. We think this is a very exciting
opportunity for Loxley School to offer the children an even better standard of education, and to build a brighter future for
our school. The Consultation Document is being sent out to all parents, carers, school staff, the Local Authority, the Diocese Board of Education, the Secretary of State, Trade Unions, Professional Associations and other relevant people
and organisations. There is a six-week period in which parties can raise questions or concerns and offer their views on the
Federation proposal, with deadline of Monday, 2 July, 2012. If you would like to know more about the proposed Federation, or see a copy of the Consultation Document, please contact the School Office. NC
