The Chalkboard The Newsletter from Narrabeen North Public School Week 8, Term 3 Thursday, 8 September 2011 From the Principal’s Desk…. Principal award recipients for Week 8: Congratulations to: Kaleb Bakker 6W; Sean Stromquist 5S; Ethan Carlile 3M; Jasmine Nix 3M; Monique Allan 1J; Aidan Cimarosti 1J; Darcie Chapman 2b; Levi Clapham 2B; Lola Reid 2B; Sequoia Griggs-Bufton 2B; Zac Webster 2B; Will Heptonstall 2B; Tahlia Raper KW; Troy Withnell KW; Riley Roper KW; Georgia Atkins KY; Charlize Gilmour KY; Katie Andrews 2AJ; Jack Chapman 2AJ; Liam Grogan 2AJ; Jayd Waters 1M; Paris McCarthy 1M; Sam Silberberg 1M; Jasmine Bauchop 1M and James Larsen 1M. Well done, everyone! BER Recognition Ceremony At last week’s Building the Education Recognition (BER) Ceremony our teacher/librarian, Mrs Koprivec made a moving speech in acknowledgement of our wonderful new facility. It is reprinted here for all to share: My name is Karen Koprivec. I have been the Teacher/Librarian at Narrabeen North for the past nineteen years and I have seen many changes. On my arrival I was mesmerised by the Bini Dome construction of the old library. The library’s construction consisted of an inflated huge balloon with concrete poured over it. Later, the windows were cut out and large ball lights were hung from the ceiling and cut into the floor were three wells for the children to sit in. The furniture consisted of massive bright yellow and green curved desks and seats placed on a bright green carpet. The library looked like it was rocket ship from outer space. It certainly was a futuristic design for the mid 1970’s! At the time, I helped to set up the current Library Oasis System. So during the 1990’s we finally became an automated library, whereby resources could be managed efficiently and effectively. But was this enough modernization to get us to the 21 st century? Thanks to the Rudd/Gillard Government, the BER building project entitled us to have a new library and three new classrooms built. Apart from the books, everything in the new library is new - including furniture, shelves, bulletin boards, carpet, blinds, book-ends, filing cabinets and even our first book return bin. The new library is modern, user-friendly and is a pleasant environment to work and learn in. Soon, the library will be equipped with a connected classroom and smart board facilities; these will enhance the teaching and learning opportunities of all students. With thanks to the P & C, the library now has 12 new computers which also aid the teaching/ learning process. These computers are well appreciated by the children at lunch-time; they complete projects and engage in maths and literature activities on them. Yet, our new library still provides the space and ambiance to browse the shelves and discover that special book that will let the reader escape into another world, or go on an adventure beyond our wildest dreams–this is the enchantment of reading! I am proud, that every day, nearly 70 children visit the library at lunchtime. They engage in a variety of activities, like drawing, playing with board games and jig-saws, working on the computer, talking to friends or reading. Not only is it an enjoyable place to be at lunchtime, but it has become a resource centre that will lead us further into the 21 st century! Also included with this newsletter is a message of congratulations from Senator Chris Evans to the NNPS community in recognition of our new building. Narrabeen North PS warmly thanks the Australian Government for our BER building. Woolworth points and Coles vouchers Thank you to everyone who continues to bring in their Woolworth’s dockets and Coles vouchers so that NNPS can collect the points to earn teaching resources and sports equipment. As of Wednesday, 7 September We have a total of 8538 points in our Woolies

account. (The final day for collecting Woolies points is Sunday, 18 September!)

We have a total of 21249 points in our Coles account.

Please, keep those points and vouchers coming in. We are looking forward to ‘spending’ the points and vouchers! Thanks for helping NNPS. Preparations for the 2012 school year Time flies! We have already commenced planning for the 2012 school year and therefore it is timely for us to ask that if you are planning on moving away from NNPS next year to let the office know as soon as possible, please. This information is crucial in making accurate enrolment predictions that relate to the staffing levels at our school. Thank you for your support and understanding. Sentences of the Week – guest class: 4B In 4B we have been learning about personification through our school magazine ‘Blast Off’. As part of our Sentence a day program 4B have come up with some of our own examples. The lightening roared to the ground. The fence stood up very straight. By Gabi The words surfed the page. The sun swam through the ocean. The calculator jumped in the box. By Gemma The mouse ran across the computer screen. The snow danced wildly in the sky. The eyes surfed across the title of the book. By Lily Yeoman Robert Blanchfield

Uniform Shop Update With only just over two weeks left of this term it is time to swap the winter stock back across to summer stock. The week ending Friday, 16 September will be the last opportunity to purchase winter items before these are stored away and inaccessible until the end of term one next year. The full range of summer items will be available for sale from Monday, 19 September for those wishing to purchase them before the start of Term 4 when all children will swap across to summer uniform. To enable this crossover to summer stock requires a couple of volunteers to help unpack the summer items and store the winter uniform till next year. If anyone is available for approximately an hour from 9.15am on Friday, 16 September please send me a brief email. Thank you! Sarah Waterhouse Uniform Shop Coordinator [email protected]

Thank you for the surf board donations. We now have enough and classes are creating their masterworks.

From the Desk of Miss Dickson A classroom is four walls with tomorrow inside! Stage 3 News Year 5 are enjoying their writing project that has an in depth focus on description and embellishing writing whilst Yr 6 continues their work on procedures. We are now moving on from our Master-chef and Master Games Challenges to embrace our inner craft, scientific and design souls! Well done and thank you to Yr 6 for their fabulous work on Go Green Day, specifically their Ecological Footprint assignments. It was an inspiration to watch as students became teachers, engaging their peers as they shared their knowledge and ideas. That particular session left me feeling that yes, our future and the planet is in good hands! Zone Athletics Carnival What a fabulous day we all enjoyed on Tuesday. Congratulations to all our competitors who represented NNPS so admirably. Overall we were represented in nine finals by seven students. Well done to the following students who placed and will now represent the Pittwater Zone at the Regional Carnival to be held at Homebush on Monday: Conor Hickey- 11yrs 800m, 3rd in 200m (res) Bailee Nix – 11yrs 800m Jayden Foster – 8yrs 100m Leimart Alboro – 12yrs 100m, 12yrs shot put, Sam Gibson – Jnr shot put Harry Van Der Saag- 12yrs high jump Once again, as always parents, you greatly assisted with this event by providing transport, being a happening cheer squad and volunteering for event service when needed. Please know the students and I really appreciate this support. Narrabeen North you are all simply the best! PSSA Sport Trials continue this Friday. The first game of PSSA is on next Friday, 16 September versus Narrabeen Lakes and this is a home game. Premier’s Sporting Challenge Keeping fit and keeping active is part of the Narrabeen North way! Our participation in the Premier’s Sporting Challenge is drawing to a close with only a couple of weeks left in our ten week challenge. Keep recording your efforts and make sure your card, if at home is returned to school at the end of the challenge. Student Success Narrabeen North was well represented last weekend in the local Rugby League Grand Finals. Current students played in the under 9yrs, under 10’s, under 11’s and under 12’s grand finals whilst ex-students played in the under 13yrs grand final. It was a day of mixed results with every player doing their club and school proud. Well done to the under 12’s who secured a victory as did the under 13’s. Commiserations to the other teams that were runners up this season. Everyone should be proud of their efforts and the way you won or lost on the day. You were gallant in victory and defeat which is what sport should be all about! Carpe Diem and go the Mighty Manly Sea Eagles! Enjoy your weekend Michelle Dickson Assistant Principal (Stage 3) Sports and Stage 3 Dance Coordinator

The full Spring Draw for PSSA will be on the school website under Curriculum and Activities—Sports—PSSA and in next week’s newsletter.

2011 NN School Chess Championship Tournament Congratulations to our 20 keen young chess experts who have now completed our School Chess Championship Tournament after many weeks of lunchtime matches! I’m pleased to announce the winners for 2011 who will each be presented with a trophy at Presentation Day in December: Jayden Bttedini and Jye Taggart (equal Senior Champions) and Dylan Catterall (Junior Champion). Well done boys! Congratulations must also go to ALL the players who showed great commitment to the tournament as well as excellent ‘chessmanship’ in the way they handled winning with humility, losing with grace, any disputes about moves and accepting the adjudicator’s decisions! The senior players were: Sebastian, Gabi V, Georgia W, Jayden B, Joel P, Jye T, Matthew W, Mitchell B, Robbie C, Ryan V and reserve Ashley McE. The junior players were: Oliver, Aubrey, Dylan C, Emmerson, Jamie P, Kyle S, Liam T, Luka DS, Max H and Sam S. All these players will be invited to participate in the NSW Junior Chess League Tournament to be played at Mona Vale PS in November in which our then 24 reps competed wonderfully well last year. I hope to send along 30 keen players this year!! This is the 7th and final annual tournament for both myself and our wonderful, dedicated, parent adjudicator Rebecca Wray. How can we thank you Rebecca for your time and support over these past 7 years!! I began the chess club a couple of years before that and Rebecca and I have watched with great pride as the NN children have taken to chess like ducks to water! In last year’s local Junior Chess League Tournament our school’s performance soared compared with previous efforts. I am of course retiring fully at the end of the year and Rebecca’s daughter Bobbie will be moving onto High School….so it’s a bit of an end of an era. Simon Brown has kindly offered to take on the Chess Tournament next year – and hopefully the organisation of the weekly chess coaching! I hope to hear next year that Chess is certainly still ‘alive and well’ at NNPS! Elaine Hartman (Chess Club Coordinator)
