From the Manse It is now more than 6 months since I was signed off sick by my GP due to severe vertigo. Since then I have seen a neurologist who confirmed the diagnosis and recommended specific physiotherapy. While there is clear improvement in my condition it has become apparent that I will not recover sufficiently to allow me to return to work. It is with great sadness that I have applied for early retirement on health grounds. As I cannot return to work before I was due to leave anyway at the end of August I wish to return to my home on the Wirral as soon as possible. This date has yet to be negotiated, and you will be informed as soon as possible.

Rev Carolyn White A Note from the Secretary At a meeting on 26

th May I was informed by Carolyn that she is waiting

for an independent doctor to sign the Ill Health Retirement application. This does not affect the sick note, which with holidays runs past her finishing date of the end of August, and therefore it is agreed that Carolyn can make arrangements to leave the area at her convenience. Les has arranged a transfer back to the Wirral, with the company he works for, and may start work there in July. Carolyn has expressed a desire to have a service to mark her leaving and it is expected that Smithy Bridge Methodist Church would host it. It has been suggested that Carolyn may prefer a reflective service due to her health issues. It was thought that a tea could be shared before this service. A date for this service is being looked into but I expect it to be early July. I will keep you informed of date and time etc.

Jed

There is a series of road shows planned, throughout the Synod, for Elders to meet with the Moderator and discuss the effects of reducing numbers of Ministers of Word and Sacrament. These, for us, will take place in July. There is also a meeting being arranged with the moderator and Central Area Pastoral Committee to look at the future arrangements for Ministry in St Andrew’s and Hallfold. This will take place in June and some Elders from both Churches will be present.

It has been decided that the Church Meeting, usually held in June, will be delayed until after these meetings so we can be clear on the important information we will share with you. It is certainly likely that arrangements we thought were to be in place may need to be changed. It is also the case that Littleborough URC is also without a Minister and that may come into future discussions.

These are exciting and challenging times for Hallfold. We have received two infants into Baptism in May, Alfie O’Connor and Amelia Riley, and will be receiving an adult, Emily Gorton, in June. Baptism is the start of a journey in Christian Faith. We provide an opportunity for these people to join us on our journeys and so grow God’s Church here in Hallfold.

There are many stages on this journey, we make, with points in our life where we are learning or making a deeper commitment. One of the ways to make a commitment is to become a Member of the church. We will be holding a series of discussion groups to look at what the URC is, what Membership is, and what we each believe. These groups can be attended by anyone, whether already a Member, or considering Membership. They will be informal over a period of 5 weeks or so in late Summer/Autumn. I will provide more details on this in the next thrilling episode of ‘Arry Writes.

3rd Whitworth U.R.C. Brownies & Rainbows April 24th was the St George’s Day celebration at the Civic Hall. We paraded down the road and then watched the Pace Egg play, performed by the Curtain Theatre at the Riverside. We have watched the performance for a few years but it seems different every time. We held Annual Sponsored Walk for Hallfold Church around Cowm Reservoir in May. Brownies, Rainbows, along with parents and friends joined us for the walk. The highlight as usual was feeding the ducks. Luckily the weather stayed fine for us again. Brownies, Rainbows and Guides will be taking part in Whitworth’s Scarecrow Festival. Look out for our Scarecrow Display in the Church car park from the 25th June. Rainbows will be joining Brownies for our annual ROSSENDALE DIVISION SPORTS evening held at B.R.G.S. on Tuesday 5th. We will be taking part in different activities along with other Brownies Rainbows & Guides from the Division. Then we will be breaking up for our summer holidays in July. Where has the year gone?

Christian Aid Week 15-21st May – The week we love every neighbour.

Our church service on 24th April focussed on Christian Aid and we shared a brunch after worship.

We delivered and collected the donation envelopes in the local area, this year we worked in small groups and we covered Wallbank, Daneswood and the Orama development and also Hall Street, Spodden Fold, Masseycroft and Riddiough Court. We delivered on the Thursday before the official Christian Aid Week and a number of us were in the area collecting on each night from Monday through to Friday of that week. We were very fortunate this year as the weather favoured us and only one evening was rained off! Also by collecting, in the main, in small groups, we shared fellowship together and witnessed for this charity and for Jesus in the area close to our church.

To end the week there was a cake auction in church on Sunday 22nd when we brought home-baked cakes and shared them either over coffee or to take home.

A huge THANK YOU to all who took part in any way and helped to raise funds for Christian Aid – together we raised £639.23.

Christine’s Jottings

Time is passing us at a fast pace. Everyone is thinking of holidays or days out (including me).

Remember that the Vintage Tea Party now has a new date, the 2nd July. The time is still 3 – 5 pm. Please pass the word around. A list for numbers will be out soon.

The young people of our church are leading a service in July. Please come along and support them. It’s a big occasion for them. We are having a lunch after this service.

This year we seem to be partaking of lots of meals. Let’s come together as much as we can as we grow as a church family. As Carolyn is leaving us we are approaching a time of thought and learning for we do not know what is round the corner. We will need to be a strong church family, helping each other and working together as a team.

Yours in Christ.

Christine

A cat died and went to Heaven. God met her at the gates and said, 'You have been a good cat all these years. Anything you want is yours for the asking.' The cat thought for a minute and then said, 'All my life I lived on a farm and slept on hard wooden floors. I would like a real fluffy pillow to sleep on.' God said, 'Say no more.' Instantly the cat had a huge fluffy pillow. A few days later, six mice were killed in an accident and they all went to Heaven together. God met the mice at the gates with the same offer that He made to the cat. The mice said, 'Well, we have had to run all of our lives: from cats, dogs, and even people with brooms! If we could just have some little roller skates, we would not have to run again.' God answered, 'It is done.' All the mice had beautiful roller skates. About a week later, God decided to check on the cat. He found her sound asleep on her fluffy pillow. God gently awakened the cat and asked, 'Is everything okay? How have you been doing? Are you happy?' The cat replied, 'Oh, it is Wonderful. I have never been so happy in my life. The pillow is so fluffy, and those little Meals on Wheels you have been sending over are delicious!'

Jed
