Its been a whirlwind during the past few weeks for me (and perhaps for you as well). And Lent is supposed to be a time of quiet prayer and preparation for the great news of Christ’sResurrection! Now, following the joy of Bishop Daniel’s consecration, and events surroundingthat day, I am vowing to take more time for quiet, for private prayer and spiritual reading.I have been finding the use of Rite I very beneficial to my spirit this Lent. The recommendationby the Liturgical Commission to pray using this traditional form of corporate prayer makes senseto me. Lent is different from all the other seasons of the Church’s Year in calling for the entireChurch to repent and focus on our salvation by God through Jesus’ walking the way of thecross. The clergy of the Diocese experienced this attention on God’s saving us through theredemption of our sin at Calvary by having an outstanding retreat led by our Bishop-Elect.What a happy three days! Many of us who were there found the three talks on conversion toChrist, His Church, and His ministry, deeply moving in reminding those of us ordained of ourvocations. As I preached the Sunday after this retreat, the Holy Spirit’s action of reconciliationwas visible among many clergy. That Spirit was also clear and evident at Bishop Daniel’s consecration. For Jody and me,we found opportunities to be with Bishop Hultstrand, Bishop Stanton of Dallas, and BishopRuss and Jerrie Jacobus of Fond du Lac great fun! And we met the Presiding Bishop. Thesignificance of her presence at Springfield is almost beyond words. On the first Thursday Lenten gathering-just before the Friday/Saturday consecrationfestivities- I was struck by the large crowd of folks at St. George’s to hear two Muslimgentlemen speak about their faith. I thought then that if we could receive these two people withsuch charity, why could our Diocese not receive the Presiding Bishop of our Episcopal Churchas well? I strongly commend the Thursday evening series to each of you, as well as the LentenAdult Forum series, “Christ on Trial:How the Gospel Unsettles Our Judgment”, based ondevotional talks by Archbishop Rowan Williams. Both these series are centered on our faith inJesus.Faithfully yours in Christ, Dale+

Scout Troop 77 Goes Into Inactive StatusBy Dave Lavely

Chartered OrganizationRep

With deep sadnessthe Parish BSA Troop77 will cease operationseffective Mar. 31, 2011.However, do not dwellon the sad news, celebrate the impact theTroop had on the lives ofits young men! In the past 38 yearsTroop 77 at St. George’shas raised 54 of itsmembers to Eagle rank.

The plaque in the Parish hallwaynear the elevator has each nameand the date Eagle rank was earnedpreserved on the plaque. In 1973Bill Sugg was the first nameinscribed. The last is Todd Pruett in2007. We hope to have one ortwo more by Mar. 31. To become an Eagle Scout eachyoung man must lead others incompleting a project which resultsin a permanent improvement to hiscommunity. These projects havebeen an affirmation that service toothers is the best work of life. There are still signs of these

projects if you know whereto look. For example, Eaglecandidates have worked onthe trails at Todd Hall andsome of the landscapingaround the church. Eachcandidate has completedsuch a project and inspiredothers to work to serve aswell. The simple message ofDuty is the core value of theBSA. The slogan of the BSA is“Do a Good turn daily”. AGood turn is something donefor others without pay. Eachyear our Scouts participate inScouting for food. Thisingathering of food hasprovided a substantialproportion of the items usedto feed the hungry ofBelleville by the St. GeorgesFood Pantry. Not all Scouts becomeEagle scouts. In fact thesuccess rate is 3% or lessnationally. However, thismeans all together 1,800young men were exposed tothese values at St. Georges. The BSA remains one of theonly secular organizations

Tsunami Survivor Asks For PrayersBy Bob Vaughn

It is a small world. Soon after the horrificearthquake, tsunami, I attempted to contact, via email, the Japanese friends I met with lastyear while on a business trip. Wereceived good news from all but 2 families. We hope to hear from those 2 soon. One sonis a member of urban search and rescue teamthat served in Haiti in the recent past. Kentaro Kawate is 26 years old andknows St George’s church. He visited ourchurch in 2007 on Good Friday, and then onEaster Sunday. Our daughter Beth servedwith Kentaro on a Christian mission in urbanChicago while both were on spring break fromthe University of Illinois. At that time,Kentaro had been a Christian for only 6months, attending a college youth oriented, evangelical fellowship. I remember at dinner, after the Good Friday service, he asked me,“Is it necessary to be baptized to be aChristian.” I struggled with an answer, but onthe next day encouraged him to be baptised, and wondered if he would like to be baptizedon Easter morning. Eventually I asked him,and he said that he wanted to be baptized in a“home” church, if he could find one when hereturned to Japan in a few months. When hewas growing up in Japan, he never knew any

Christians, and worried that his faith wouldfalter if he did not find a fellowship. This is where God connected the dots! Sue and I offered that we knew JapaneseChristians, and attended St Patrick’s church inTachikawa, not far from where he would beattending graduate school. We emailed ourfriends in Japan, asking them to welcomeKentaro, and gave him their contactinformation. Within a month of his return toJapan, we heard both from our church family, and Kentaro, that they had worshipedtogether and shared “Bob-san”, “Sue-san”stories. Soon, he was able to find room at aChristian dorm at his school, and joined anactive fellowship there. The following Easter,he was baptized in that fellowship! Kentaro and his family are well, he is veryconcerned that the nuclear plant emergencywill lead to a huge disaster, and asks ourprayers for the Japanese nation. Therecovery in Japan will extend long after theemergency at the power plant is resolved. Please pray for our brothers and sisters, andthat God will use them in this situation to sharethe good news. We are amazed when wesee the marvelous tapestry God weaves withthe people in our lives.

Happening HereThis Weekend Imam Nadir Sanhaj and Abdul Kazi, MD spoke to more than

60 members of St. George’s and the community as the LentenStudy program began March 17. Imam Sanhaj said the Arabic meaning of the word muslim isone that strives to be submissive to God. The word can applyto person of any faith. The spirituality of Islam has been lost bysome members (sects) of the faith which has led to much of thetrouble today. He said they believe that Jesus is a most important spiritualprophet and will be the Messiah; however they do not believeHe is God or that He died and rose from the dead. They believethat He was taken to heaven by God and will return to defeatthe Anti-Christ. Then after performing other duties Jesus willdie and go to heaven. The large audience appreciated the presentation while notagreeing with their beliefs. The important series continued thisweek with a presentation by Rabbi Mordecai Miller offering anunderstanding of — Jewish messianic traditions. On March 31, Fr Warren Crews will present messianicexpectations in the early church. Fr Crews is well known to St.George’s and has taught courses through the Lutheran Schoolof Theology. Pastor Ron Neustadt, also a lecturer for the LutheranSchool of Theology and retired Pastor of St. Mark, will present- millennialism, the rapture and what we really believe. April 7. The Soup Supper Lenten Study program will conclude onApril 14 when Bishop Daniel Martins will explore “Who is theMessiah for me? How do we as Christians live into the Messi-anic expectations of our faith?” This will be the first visit to St.George’s by our new Bishop. A light Homemade soup supper begins at 6 pm. A freewilloffering will be accepted. The program follows supper at about 7 pm.
