“Only through our connectedness to others can we really know and enhance the self. And only through working on the self can we begin to enhance our connectedness to others.”

HARRIET GOLDHOR LERNER

Create New Connections. That is the theme of this year’s AMTA National Convention in Cincinnati. By connecting with other members of other chapters we get the opportunity to experience joy, laughter, togetherness, learn new skills and earn up to 19 CE hours in the areas of Business/ethics, research, science, self-care, and meet people with the same passion for Massage Therapy as we have. More than 1,100 massage therapists are expected from across the country.

Visit a new place. Cincinnati is famous for its Skyline chili and Graeter’s ice cream. It’s a big city with a small town feel. It also has great landmarks such as the National Underground Railroad Freedom Center, Cincinnati Museum Center, the Cincinnati Red’s, and there is a Sixth Annual Midpoint Music Festival.

If you can’t make it to the National convention this year, why not create new connections with members at a Chapter Membership meeting or a local unit meeting. Our next Chapter Membership meeting is October 20th in Pine Mountain Georgia. We will have Special Members Anniversary recognition, the election of our 2008 Delegates, Silent Auction on Earthlite and NRG Tables, Raffles, Prizes and Fun.

The Continuing Education on October 20-21, is “Medical Massage Basics with Faith Pease. Faith specializes in medical massage therapy and will be demonstrating success in the treatments of chronic pain resulting from injury, cancer and fibromyalgia.

What a great way to meet new people, learn new techniques, have fun and from the quote above “enhance the self.”

Being apart of the AMTA association has brought a wealth of friendships, courage, experience and self worth that has been invaluable to me. Come and create new connections and begin to enhance your connectedness to others.

Yours in Service,Joan Nichols

Delegate Update By Toni Roberts, Delegate

What is the House of Delegates? The House of Delegates is a representative body of the membership. During the AMTA 2007 National Convention in Cincinnati, Ohio, the Georgia Chapter will have three delegates who were elected at the last Chapter meeting in 2006 and they will attend the convention on your behalf. Those Delegates are Toni Roberts of Marietta, Jane Johnson of Marietta and Loyce Kemp of Warner Robins. Their terms began on January 1st. A professional member in good standing may be elected as a delegate. Delegates actually have weighted votes, proportional to the number of professional members in their chapter.

Alternate delegates are also elected in the event delegates can not serve for any reason. “Alternates” as we often call them, participate in all activities, correspondence and decisions throughout the year. They receive the same information from National in case they need to step in and fill the position as delegate. The Georgia Chapter Alternate delegates are Kathy Holtman of Martinez and Gary Schwander of Marietta.

Each Chapter sends their delegates to the National Convention. We attend an Orientation before we attend the House of Delegates meeting. We must arrive on time as no delegate is seated after roll call is taken. The roll call will count delegates present, will establish two thirds total delegates present, will establish a quorum and stand voting points.

For adoption of agenda, amended rules of procedure and general House of Delegates business, voting is conducted by an electronic voting system and each delegate is entitled to one vote.

Recommendations and position statements are presented and can be debated. The author of a recommendation may speak to introduce the recommendation and may then speak in debate. This year, two of the

five recommendations came from Georgia members, Toni Roberts and Dana Whitfield of Dahlonega. No position statements proposals moved forward this year. Please review all recommendations and participate in the survey included in this issue. This is your opportunity to make a difference and be a valuable part of this process! We thank you for electing us to serve the Georgia Chapter this year!By Jane Johnson, LMT Loyce Kemp, LMT

Call for comments Because of odd timing, we were not able to insert the Recommendations before the House of Delegates in the last newsletter. At the June 9th Chapter Meeting in Rome I presented the five recommendations to members and guests. After some lively discussion, attendees filled out the survey. If you have not yet filled one out, please do so before September 20th or go to the Chapter website, www.amtamassage.org by September 24th. (See sample form on page 9) I will update your comments on the web, anonymously of course. If you have any questions, please contact any delegate. We represent you, the member, so this is your opportunity to be heard at National. You can read the full text of the recommendations at http://www.amtamassage.org/member/recommendations.html.

Members write position statements No position statements were ready for the HOD this year. In contrast to recommendations which recommend that the BOD make changes in the bylaws, policy or other matters

internal to the association, a position statement is external. They are statements on our position on public matters that are likely to be of interest to people and organizations outside of AMTA—to consumers, the media, the medical community, the spa community, or employers. Position statements can take time to develop, sometimes even years. For example, our position statement on stress took three years to be developed and pass the HOD. Once the HOD passes a position statement it becomes an official position of the association.

Call for writersIf you are interested in developing a position statement, please do not hesitate to contact a delegate, a chapter officer, staff member Ron Precht, or myself as chair of the Position Statement Proposal Review Workgroup. We can offer you assistance at all stages of the process. The time to begin developing a position statement for the 2008 House of Delegates is now. For more information go to http://www.amtamassage.org/member/positionintro.html. The deadline for submissions is February 1st of each year.

Delegates elected October 20thI hope to see you at Convention or at the Chapter Meeting on October 20th, where the 2008 delegates will be elected. Please contact any delegate if you have an interest in running.

Delegate Update (continues) By Toni Roberts, Delegate

First Vice President, Govenment Relations ChairBy Vivian Davis

Chapter Volunteer Orientation Program (CVOP) was developed as a training program for leaders on the Chapter level to better understand what is required as officers of a non-profit organization that is also a volunteer membership association.Sessions consisted of: Leadership Challenges, Association Basics/Risk Management, Chapter Financial Controls / Financial Jeopardy and Ambassador Training and Rules. Each segment’s purpose is to show that Chapters and the National organization coexist with the purpose of serving members and so that the members will be better served with a positive, coordinated effort demonstrated across all areas of the organization.Times were available to schedule with AMTA subject matter experts for those who wished to have a one-on-one session for financial advise, legal consultations, or government relations.I met with Jill McCory of Leadership Outfitters to talk about modes of communication; email, mail, fax or face to face. We do need to understand that some of our members cannot afford computers so networking in your area is important to help others stay informed.I met with Mark Tyle from National for government relations. As Government Relations chairperson, I will be scheduling meetings every other month, dates will be set by our next membership meeting in Warm springs. The Chapter is in compliance with all AMTA requirements, our Chapter contract with our lobbyist is within compliance with National and similar to other states. continue on page 12

Acceptance by the conventional medical community of massageas an integrated part of healthcare, and recognition by companies and health centers of the value of promoting wellness are creating opportunities for massage therapists to build or expand their practices into these areas . You may find new opportunities if you would like to work in a medical environment, and you may find a welcoming work setting in a wellness program .

A binder containing all the sessions information, along with handouts, a CD, and a leadership book was issued to each attendee. We as a board experienced leadership information at this years board retreat that was taught at last years CVOP. Learning and understanding our roles as officers and knowing our job descriptions is the key for successful meetings. Accountability for each position is important for the Chapter to be in compliance both at a Chapter and National level.Thank you for allowing me to go to this most informative training and I hope to better my Chapter with this information.

Policy By Carolyn J . Lowe, ChairMembers at the June 9th Chapter Meeting in Rome unanimously passed Standing Rules amendments that further define the Executive Board and the Board of Directors, change the position of Membership Chair to Membership Secretary, and remove the Immediate Past President position as a voting member of the Chapter Board of Directors. Membership Secretary was created to distinguish it as a board position as opposed to an appointed chair position. The Immediate Past President was removed as a voting position since it is not an elected position. The Chair is currently updating chapter volunteers’ copies of the ever changing Policy Manual as well as the Standing Rules. Chapter volunteers are required to read and understand bylaws, policy, and standing rules. For a copy of the Standing Rules or if you have any questions regarding the chapter or the association policies please call 404.847-0301 or email me at policy@amtaga .org.

NWGA Unit NewsOn Feb. 8, 2007, the NWGA Unit held a meeting at Coosa Valley Technical College. Our guest speaker was James Trussel from the NWGA Parkinson’s Association. The information that James gave about Parkinson’s was about the disease as a whole and the benefits of massage for the person with Parkinson’s was above expectations.

AMTA Chapter Volunteer Orientation Program Chapter Treasurer - Attendee By Lee Holtman

I am pleased I attended the 2007 CVOP training as one of the Chapter representatives due to the expressed emphasis on new financial reporting requirements for Chapters. AMTA National has been working on ways for Chapters to standardize their bookkeeping and financial status reporting back to National. It is understandable in today’s environment of financial mismanagement at many levels, that the need to protect our 501 (c) (6) nonprofit organizational status is a serious responsibility. That was one of the main themes throughout this training. The workshops were conducted by both Chris Voltarel, the volunteer Chapter Relations Chair and by Leadership Outfitters Inc. Along with the financial focus there was great leadership training sessions in the areas of Leadership Challenges where volunteers learned skills about Modeling the Way, how to Inspire a Shared Vision, Challenge the Process and Enable Others to Act. We also were educated on Nationals vision of all officers as Ambassadors of the AMTA in that we’re responsible to be AMTA knowledgeable “Cheerleaders” for the association that can communicate clear messages on AMTA goals, core values and envisioned future. Leadership training also had some fun times as we completed sessions on Volunteer Spirit such as balancing our needs and values between individual and Chapter. We enjoyed some creative exercises in group idea brainstorming, group team work exercises, and role playing in board meeting situations. The opportunities to work in these situations with other volunteers from totally different Chapters make for a unique learning experience. The bonding with like minded leaders is invaluable.

The financial sessions were a bit more serious in that the messages were very important under Association Basics & Risk Management. An important fact many volunteers do not realize is that the AMTA is a Nonprofit Corporation and all of us volunteers have a legal responsibility as officers of that corporation. The training emphasized that we exist under a “social contract” between nonprofits and society and we receive special benefits under that status. The main topics covered were (1) Responsibilities and expectations of volunteers; (2) Recognizing that legally and financially, the entire organization is liable for Chapter actions; (3) The standards of conduct that a court of law will use to judge a volunteer’s actions; and (4) A volunteer leader’s fiduciary responsibility and the process to protect volunteers. I felt that one of the most important legal responsibilities we hold as AMTA officers; is that governing boards of organizations are expected to act in good faith; with the care any ordinary person in the same circumstances would exercise; and in a manner that is in the best interest of the organization. These standards include the Duty of Obedience, Duty of Loyalty, and Duty of Care. Understanding these responsibilities is what makes a good leader!I intend to share all this training information with our Chapter volunteers at the next available opportunity and again at next years board retreat. I appreciate the chance to continue to learn with the AMTA-GA Chapter. This is a true benefit to Chapter officers serving on boards.

Election of Delegates for 2008

Plan to attend the next Chapter meeting in Pine Mountain to elect the Georgia Chapter Delegates for 2008. Better yet, consider running for Delegate! In order to be eligible for candidacy, you must be a professional member in good standing, sign the AMTA Chapter Volunteer Code of Conduct, agree to uphold and abide by the National AMTA Articles of Incorporation, Bylaws, Policy, Code of Conduct, Rules of Engagement and Job Description and can not be an AMTA National Board member. The Delegate’s are given authority by National Bylaws and Policies through election by the Chapter membership and are accountable to the members of the Chapter by virtue of election. The Delegate’s term of office begins January 1, 2008 and ends December 31, 2008. The Delegate’s represent the Georgia Chapter members in the House of Delegates during the AMTA 2008 National Convention in Phoenix, Arizona and also represents the Chapter members in related activities, informs the Chapter of timelines and facilitates the Chapter’s influence in the House of Delegates. The Delegate’s carry out any assignments and charges applicable to their House of Delegate function.Delegate Responsibilities:1. The Delegate, in communication at the

Chapter Annual Meeting and through other means available, initiates member involvement in discussion of matters that may or will come before the HOD.

2. Maintains a working knowledge of materials provided prior to the HOD.

3. Prepares and reviews all necessary materials prior to meetings.

4. Attends and participates in the HOD orientation and meeting and casts informed votes.

5. Reports the actions of the HOD to the Chapter membership.

The time commitment averages about 2-4 hours per month. The Delegate’s are encouraged to attend the Chapter meetings as well as being present for the Board teleconferences. The Delegate’s attend the Chapter Annual Meeting, the Delegate Orientation Meeting and the HOD Meeting at the National Convention. Serving as Delegate is a wonderful learning experience. The 2007 Georgia Chapter Delegate’s are available to speak to you regarding any questions that you may have about the upcoming election. We hope to see you in Pine Mountain!

Jane Johnson, LMT, AMTA 2007 Georgia Chapter Delegate

By Lee Holtlman, Units Chairperson

Our Chapter has experienced a slow start to developing Units around the state. With the largest population of our state members residing around the Atlanta Metro-Plex, we see a definite need for therapists to come together as a group in the smaller outlying areas. The Chapter tries to have education and membership functions around the state to meet and accommodate everyone in GA. Travel to different sides of the state or to Atlanta is not always feasible for many members. The benefits of having a local AMTA Unit that can provide networking and contact with fellow massage professionals can be another tangible service derived from AMTA.

To find out about what is required to start a Unit besides a little enthusiasm and some people skills, I have pulled an excerpt from the new Chapter Web Site under Units to give our readers an idea of the steps it takes and the assurance you will have help in doing it. Please take the time to look at our web site for more information or contact me at [email protected]

AMTA-GA Unit FormationThe Chapter Board has approved the position of Units Chair to oversee Units and assist with the formation of Units within the state. The Units chair reports to the Membership Secretary and the President of the board on all activities. The Units chair is the liaison between the Units and the Chapter board and is responsible for assisting a new Unit through this process. The formation of a Unit is governed by the Chapter standing rules. This paper is a summation of those requirements to assist a member in starting up a Unit in their various state locations. A copy of the Chapter standing rules will be provided as a Unit begins to take shape.

The steps listed are to help ensure the process is made as easy as possible.

1. For any interested member the first step is to contact the Chapter Units Chairperson and work through them.

2. The Units chair will arrange with the Membership Secretary a general geographical location for the Unit based on prospective member population by county and zip codes. A membership roster for that area will be generated and provided to the individuals for recruitment. Rosters come in Excel format.

3. The potential new Unit needs to come up with a minimum of five (5) AMTA members who work or reside within the Unit boundary. It is highly recommended to contact and confirm a reasonable number of members that will support and participate in the Unit. The Units chair will assist with coaching as to approaches to getting members interested.

Jennifer Simpson-Green became a Massage Therapist in Colorado in 2003. She moved back to GA in 2004 due to her spouses military duty station change. She has lived in Augusta before and has family here. She became active in volunteering with the

AMTA as the Augusta Unit was starting up, by becoming their Unit Treasurer. Once the

volunteer bug had bitten it wasn’t long before she became involved at the Chapter level. Jen was one of our 2005 Chapter Delegates at the AMTA National convention in New Mexico. Learning that the next National convention was to be in Atlanta, she immediately stepped up and joined the convention planning committee. Once the committee got rolling, Jen assumed the convention Host responsibilities and put her high energies to work to try and make the GA hosted convention one of the best there has ever been. There is not enough room in this article to give her all the due recognition for the tremendous job she did, but we can assure all Georgia MT’s (if you did not make the convention) that her efforts got our state a extraordinary amount of praise from AMTA National staff, long time AMTA members, and especially other Chapters. Georgia set a new standard! Jennifer has been submitted by our Chapter for the Chapter Meritorious Award that is given by National each year at the conventions. Jennifer continued to volunteer with our Chapter and was elected 2nd Vice President in 2006 and also assumed the Education Chair position. She has worked diligently arranging education presenters for the Chapter and has served our board and members well as a VP.

In the latter part of 2006 and into 2007 life events have changed tremendously for Jen and giving so much of her time for the AMTA has created a strain on her personal life. She has tried to balance the travel & time commitments for AMTA and the needs of her daughter Skyler for many months. While we all know the wealth of energy and excitement she has for the AMTA, she must now take a necessary pause from her love of volunteering and doing for others. Jennifer has with great thought realized that she must devote herself to being a sole provider and a mother first and foremost. She has had to resign from her positions at this time but will stay active at the Unit level. All our Chapter volunteers will miss her involvement but we know as she does that this in only a temporary time period in her life and SHE WILL BE BACK !!!!

Jennifer Will Be Missed! AMTA-GA Unit Formation Continues4. The forming Unit will need to

compile a petition of names (sample provided) to be submitted to the Chapter board, along with a Unit Formation Request letter (sample provided) so the new Unit can be approved by the Chapter Board. The formation request letter will need to contain a planned 1st meeting date. There is a new requirement from AMTA National that any and all officers must acknowledge and sign a Code of Conduct letter (provided) and that must be sent to the Chapter along with the other documents.

5. The Chapter Board will place the new Unit request on the next board meeting agenda. The board will normally approve the Unit and the funding from the Chapter after any questions or concerns are satisfied.

6. The first planned meeting will need to have officer elections. A Unit must have as a minimum a Unit President, a Unit VP, and a Secretary/Treasurer. Type of activities and goals for a Unit will be discussed by the Units chair. Making use of the other Units ideas and activities is encouraged. Financial planning for the Unit will be coordinated through the Units chair. A separate page on the Chapter web site is available for each Unit.

Pine Mountain, Georgia captures all the charm of a small Southern town, all the excitement and amenities of a city and all the friendly faces you can imagine just waiting to share their area with stoppers-by. Known for its quaint shops, history and Southern cooking, the area is a vacationer’s dream for relaxing and enjoying the past. Originally named Chipley, the town began in 1882 when the railroad spread to Pine Mountain from Columbus. The Pine Mountain area has emerged from its days as a farming community into a primary tourism location, greatly due to the efforts of President Franklin Roosevelt and Callaway Gardens’ Cason Callaway. Today, Pine Mountain serves as the gateway to the 14,000-acre Callaway Gardens, created to provide a beautiful, natural setting for education and recreational pursuits. The gardens that Cason Callaway opened to the public in 1952 have blossomed into an exclusive retreat with stunning floral displays year-round, 63 holes of championship golf, fishing lakes, and an array of hiking and biking trails. Callaway is one of the biggest reasons people travel to this small south Georgia town. In fact, Pine Mountain has become a real hotspot for both weddings and honeymoons, largely due to its amenities and proximity to Atlanta.

Guests can experience Georgia’s largest State Park, F.D. Roosevelt State Park; the Pine Mountain Antiques Mall; a Wild Animal Safari; plenty of recreational attractions; the quaint shops in downtown Pine Mountain; Franklin Roosevelt’s Little White House in nearby Warm Springs; or plan a day trip to nearby locations - the choice is yours! And ahead of time...thanks for visiting Pine Mountain!
