Mission “pawsible”...because of you!

Who wouldn’t want to be like Ethan Hunt (Tom Cruise), saving the world one movie at a time? If you are one of our many supporters, you are saving lives, one animal at a time.

Whether you help us by adopting a shelter pet, attending our events, becoming a member, sending a memorial or honorarium, organizing your own fundraiser, remembering us in your estate plan, or donating, you’ve become part of making the difference for more than 6,600

animals over our 18 years of operation. We rely on your generosity to champion our mission of caring for animals in need and finding them forever homes. There are many worthy causes and charitable organizations asking for your assistance both monetarily and through volun-

teerism, but HMAS hopes we can count on your continued help both today and in the future. You are our HEROS!

The Heart of Minnesota Animal Shelter is devoted to the care of unwanted, stray or abused animals in the form of providing veterinary care, housing and adoption in the McLeod County and surrounding area. We are further devoted to the education of the public regarding animal care and overpopulation.

David Laine, a volunteer at the dog building, exhibits a unique connection with dogs. As a field medic and medical technician for six years in the Navy he gained plenty of experience providing care for those in need. He and his wife Marilyn have both been volunteers for the past fifteen years.

When dogs come to the shelter, they can be anxious, confused, depressed and scared. David pays special attention to these animals. He will comfort them for hours letting them know they are safe and secure.

THE PAWGRESS REPORT

The Newsletter of the Heart of Minnesota Animal Shelter Fall 2017

Every year HMAS undergoes inspection by the Minnesota Board of Animal

Health, whose mission is to protect the health of the state’s domestic animals.

The inspection, conducted by a veterinarian, ensures the shelter is compliant

with Minnesota Statues 347.31 to 347.40 and Minnesota Rules 1721.0520.

These statues and rules address proper facilities, standards of care (food, water, and confine-

ment areas), veterinary care and record keeping. HMAS once again had a successful inspec-

tion in 2017. The inspector noted that our medical protocols were excellent and cleanliness

was exceptional. She stated “HMAS is one of the nicest shelters she had visited.”

19th Annual HMAS Paws on Parade Benefit Walk

June 10, 2017, was warm and windy, a great day to gather together to support HMAS! Once again we had a successful

event, raising over $13,000 for the shelter. The funds come from sponsorships, pledges, silent auction, merchandise and food sales, vendor tables, and donations. In addition to our

prizewinners, top fundraisers were recognized with a medal. Also new this year was an HMAS alumni parade and a “pawparazzi” photo booth. We are so grateful to the busi-

nesses that sponsored our event and encourage you to pat-ronize them. To everyone that pledged, attended, purchased silent auction items, merchandise or food, we thank you!

Just some of the HMAS alumni who attended the pet walk. Bella (far right) came all the way from Sioux Falls. Flash the basset (center) had the honor of being the “oldest” alumnus, having been adopted in 2005 from HMAS.

Can’t do this without our dedicated volunteers. There’s always room for more!

You’re the best!

You never cease to amaze us with your innovative ideas and generous spirit! More than $5,700 in cash and merchandise was received from the individuals, organizations and businesses listed below. Your support is so necessary and appreciated. Thank you to...

Tobey (another HMAS alumnus!) for donating 5 box-es of tennis balls, baseballs and softballs to the rummage sale. Living near an athletic park means lots of “lost” balls just waiting to be found!

Herald Journal in Winsted and the Enterprise Dispatch in Dassel/Cokato for shar ing the proceeds of their cutest pet contest that was held during the month of May.

Pizza Ranch. HMAS was contacted by Jaci Trai-foros, the assistant general manager of the new store in Hutchinson, inviting us to participate in an invitation only pre-opening event. We supplied shelter volunteers (Connie Hall, Rachel Haugen and Roberta Yates sharing duties) to act as hostesses for both the lunch and dinner buffets on July 14, 2017. We were able to greet people, display our information board, present a digital photo display of adoptable animals, and collect a suggested $5 donation from each diner. What a great way for us to interface with the public and receive a total of $1423.00 from the patrons! A very heartfelt thanks to the very generous owners of Pizza Ranch, Doug and Jan Lake, who along with their daughter Brenda also own a Pizza Ranch in Shakopee, for providing us with this wonderful opportunity. They also helped the local food shelf in the same man-ner.

Target and Walmart of Hutchinson for their many donations of food for shelter animals.

Rebecca Benoit and Jack Peterson of Cokato for once again having their Garage Sale/Fundraiser in April.

Liquor Hutch in Hutchinson, Minnesota Beverage Association, and Locher Bros for sponsor ing a drop box and donation jar in April.

Locher Bros for pr inting the banners for our 2017 “Paws on Pa-rade.”

Terry Grinde and family for donating the proceeds of their 5th annual plant sale in memory of Benny, their bichon shelter dog.

Menards for collecting pet supplies dur ing May.

3M Gives (Volunteer Match) donated $250 each for Jason Bonnema, Lisa Breitkreutz, Cassie Kirchhoff, Jamie Boyer, Wanda Rath and DeLue Grams for their hours of service to the shelter.

Girl Scout Troop #30104, comprised of Alecia Hansen and Kendall Conn. These gir ls banked their cookie sale money throughout their time as Scouts with the goal of donating it to the shelter. Upon high school graduation Alecia’s mother (and troop leader), Carol Hansen closed the account and gave it to HMAS. Both girls are currently attending college.

Silver Lake Liquor Store, Minnesota Municipal Beverage Association (MMBA) and Miller Lite for their fundraiser for HMAS.

Amber and Clara O. for their “lemonaid” stand do-nations to the shelter. They are the proud owners of Ninja and Chelsea, both HMAS alumni!

McKimm Milk Transit for providing year around storage for our rummage sale items.

Sorensen’s Sales & Rental for allowing HMAS for the use of their trucks for rummage sale transportation.

Nadia and Elien for once again having their “Mom,” Dawn send a box of toys to HMAS in honor of their 4th birth-day. They were adopted in April of 2014 and have remembered shelter cats every year since.

Kid’s Junction for their Lemonade Stand. Thanks so much kids!

Tobey resting after his hard work

Chris Schultz of the Herald Journal and Enterprise Dispatch presented a check of $250 to Roberta Yates of the Heart of Minnesota Animal Shelter in

With special thanks to…

Kim Winter (center ) for sponsor ing HMAS Pet

of the Week each month for the past 10 years. Her do-

nations and the support of Crow River Media have helped hundreds of animals find loving families. Pre-senting a mosaic composition of the images of the ani-

mals she has sponsored, is Roberta Yates, HMAS presi-dent, and Anthony Anderberg, Vice President and crea-tor of the picture.

Dr. Kristin Roffey of Hutchinson Pet Hospital,

for the additional support she extended to HMAS in the

absence of the shelter’s veterinary technician. We also recognize our volunteers, Anthony Anderberg, Saman-tha Emigh, David Laine and Marilyn Laine who as-

sumed added responsibilities during this time.

Fundraising Review

We work hard every year raising money through our events. Our two largest, the “Paws on Parade” Petwalk in June and our Rummage/Book/Bake sale in September grossed over $13,000 and $10,000 respectively. In addi-tion, we “run” the Cashwise Brat Stand for 3 days in September, which is always successful. We also serve as parking attendants and maintenance staff at the Fair-grounds during the Wright County Dog Show in Octo-ber. Our next fundraising appeal is our Christmas letter which will be sent out during the month of December. Because a large portion of our annual budget depends on events and donations, we’re always looking for op-portunities to expand our fundraising. If you have an idea to help us, whether as an individual or a business, or want to serve on the fundraising committee, please contact the shelter.

PS: If you order through Amazon smile (smile.amazon.com) and name HMAS as your charity, Amazon donates directly to us. Using the Wooftrax app (wooftrax.com) when you walk your dog also raises funds for us.

PSS: It’s never too early to donate items for next year’s rummage sale which is always held the first weekend after Labor Day.

PSSS: No donation is too small!

What the Vet Says...Canine Influenza

by Dr. John Froning @ Animal Medical Center on Crow River

This summers’ “flu” cases lead to many good discussions. Should my dog be vaccinated? What are the clinical signs? What are the risks? Can I contract influenza from my dog?

Canine influenza (H3N2) is highly contagious and spreads rapidly from dog to dog via respiratory discharges, directly from cough/sneeze/bark, indirectly on shared bowls/housing, and from one dog to another via human skin. The signs are not unlike “kennel cough” symptoms—coughing, lethargy, decreased appetite, discharge from the eyes and nose—but making a definitive diagnosis is tough without laboratory testing. A small percentage of infected dogs will pro-gress to more severe clinical signs including high fever, rapid breathing and pneumonia. Signs typically appear 1 to 5 days after infection. There have been no reported cases of H3N2 in people.

I recommend vaccinating based on risk assessment and taking precautions to prevent your pet from acquiring and transmitting the virus.

Vaccinate if your dog will have exposure to other dogs that travel (shows, hunting), or if your dog will be visit-ing boarding facilities/doggie day cares, groomers, dog parks, or if you are traveling to areas with known cases.

The risk is higher for dogs with compromised immune systems, for example those with diabetes, Cushing’s, can-cer, aging, or on high doses of prednisolone/cyclosporine or other immunosuppressive medication.

Avoid kennels and areas with reported coughing dogs. If your dog develops a cough and has been in contact with other coughing dogs in

the prior 14 days, refrain from activities involving other dogs to avoid putting them at risk.

Transmission from dogs to cats is possible but considered rare—take precautions around coughing dogs. The virus is easily killed by common disinfectants (quaternary ammoni-um compounds, bleach at 1:30 dilution). Washing hands with soap and water or using alcohol-based hand sanitizer will decrease transmission.

Testing is available and is most successful if done prior to antibiotic treatment and during the initial 5 days of illness.

Happy Tails!

In late winter of 2017, Savannah was sur-rendered to HMAS. She is a Norwegian Forest Cat, a very no-ble breed. We knew she was special and deserved the perfect home since she had come from a special home.

This was the first time the shelter hosted a Weegie (their nickname). She was amazing, beautiful, large and super sweet. I had my eyes opened as to just what a wonderful cat she was. The first week she became available, on adoption Saturday, we received a call from an interested party in Connecticut. Through the Norwegian Forest Cat Rescue site, these ladies had discovered Savannah. They knew the breed, loved the breed (owned several) and were familiar with their history and particular traits. They have a male Weegie named Jasper. I put a pending on Savan-nah and even before I left the shelter, Erin and Lynne were making preparations to drive to Minnesota to get her.

Flash to Monday afternoon, just two days after the phone call, the adoption took place. Three hearts were united and the long journey back home began. We are now friends on Facebook and I get to see how wonderful this ending is. It was my honor to facilitate

this adoption. Thanks, HMAS!

I suggest everyone look up the Norwegian Forest breed and learn about them.

~ Mary Guggemos-Adoption Counselor

Thought we would let you know how Teddy is liking his new home! He gets two nice walks every day. He loves all his toys, his chew toy, his rope toy and even his ball! He has that puppy face down and he got it pretty fast. He likes to bark at every-one that walks by like he owns the place (he kind of does). We will stay in touch!

~ Tucker and Heather

You had named him Grant, I renamed him AJ; he has to be with me all the time. Here we are launching the steam-boat Minnehaha into lake Minnetonka. At 3 mph, it’ll take a while. Thank You!

~ Jeff from Excelsior, MN

Nora is a CH (cerebellar hypoplasia) kitty that came through HMAS in 2016. CH is a non-progressive, non-contagious neurological condition that affects walking and balance and occurs because part of the brain is underde-veloped. Cats with this condition don’t seem to “know” they are different than other cats and barring other health conditions, have the same life span. While CH is not an extraordinarily common condition, it does require a spe-cial owner who is willing to provide the best care for their cat. Many owners will say that their CH cat is the sweetest ever and what they lack in coordination, they make up in personality. Nora was fortunate to be adopted by Laurie and Galen. Here’s what they say about her:

“I wanted to give you an update on Nora—she is doing very well. She is definitely a moderate CH kitty and seri-ously visually impaired, but a very sweet, very messy girl-and we don’t mind! We are slowly introducing her to our other visually impaired kit-ties. She seems to have got-ten a lot stronger being able to roam free in a larger room.”

Laurie and Galen requested HMAS’s help in locating another CH kitty as a possi-ble companion for Nora. They ended up adopting sisters Uma and Ruby, both affected by CH. They report that Nora is more alert, hap-pier and more playful now that the kittens have joined the family. Thank you to this wonderful couple for adopting cats with special needs!

Leave a Lasting Legacy

Legacy is defined as a gift by will, especially of money or other personal property. A decision to include HMAS in your estate plan or will gives you the opportunity to help animals and make a difference in their lives in the years to come. Planning allows you to have control over the ultimate distri-bution of your assets and at the same time, simplifies matters for your survi-vors. It’s never too early to express your desires and you don’t have to be wealthy to leave a legacy. Please consider including HMAS in your plan and if you have questions, please contact Jody Wendorff at 320-234-9699 or email [email protected].

Another great way to support the shelter, instead of giving cash, is for individuals with investment stocks and/or de-ferred IRA’s to donate dividends to charities directly. Donating stock instead of money may lessen your tax obliga-

tion. Please check with an investment advisor to determine if this is an option for you.
