Twyning Parish Council Chairman’s ReportWell, the warmer weather has arrived; it’s a treat to see the wide variety of colourful flower displays emerging around the village gardens. I must also say it is a delight entering the village from the M50 roundabout. The flowers planted by the Scouts are now in full bloom and most worthy of a rosette at the Annual Fete!

Facebook – Twyning Community It is good to see that we now have a Twyning Community web page on Facebook; these sites are becoming very popular as they provide a useful information exchange channel for local communities.

Road Safety - Speeding Vehicles Some of you would have noticed around the village recently, a number of familiar faces wearing reflective jackets and holding a speed radar gun. Tewkesbury Police provided the equipment to the Parish Council, to identify the speeding ‘hot spots’ around the village. No registration numbers were taken during the exercise, only the recorded speed. The results evidenced that we do have a speeding problem in the village. Further monitoring sessions will be carried out over the next few months, and if the speeding issue continues then the Police are likely to arrive with the real thing.

We were fortunate at our Annual Assembly meeting to have Gary Handley as our speaker. Gary works out the Tri-Centre in Gloucester his work involves trying to improve road safety and reducing the number of people being killed or injured in road collisions. He manages a range of services aimed at reducing the number of collisions involving drivers, such as the Driver Improvement Scheme, Drink Drive Rehabilitation Scheme and Speed Awareness.

Gary has worked tirelessly over the years to help communities and his enthusiasm is infectious. So infectious that I will be proposing to Council that we invite him back, so watch this space.

Dog Fouling We seem to have issues again about dog owners not picking up their dog poo on farmland footpaths. I have also been reminded that owners are obliged to keep their dogs on leads when on private land, especially where there is livestock present

Twyning Village HallThe Village Hall host a wide variety of activities... a Dance Academy, Short Mat Bowls and a Model Railway Club... to mention just a few. But the one particularly in the limelight recently was the Short Mat Bowls who have recently acquired a state of the art carpet roller. Invited guests including representatives of Tewkesbury Borough Council and the press were welcomed to the grand roll- out! It is an impressive bit of kit and lays the playing surface out with precision and ease. Congratulations to this club for their enterprise and hard work in providing such excellent facilities. Members were also dressed in their team strip which made for some good publicity in the Gloucestershire Echo. If you think this might be just the activity you need or you might want to make some new friends, the Village Hall on a Monday afternoon is the place to visit.

Are you thinking about a family party or celebration? Did you know that we’ve linked up with the Village Inn to provide the bar facility which meets your needs? We can even give you some contacts with tried and tested local caterers. Don’t forget that the Hall is run to meet your needs and we will be happy to take your booking.

The Hall is also a venue for the Parish Council, the Twyning Players, the Twyning WI, the uniformed youth organisations and many other activities. If you can think of other ways that we might serve the community we will be happy to consider your ideas. The Village Hall management Committee meets at 8pm on the 3rd Tuesday of most months and members of the public are welcome.

You may recall that we decided to mark the service of John Reynolds (former Chairman) and Dave Baker (former Bar Manager) both of whom died last year. So it was our privilege to host Christine Reynolds and Julie Baker on the 15 April when we looked at the Tributes (a bench seat for John and a plaque in the Bar for Dave) and toasted their memory.

Looking ahead, we intend to re-decorate the Hall throughout, during the Summer holidays, so we should remain a good venue for whatever you want to do or celebrate

Twyning Short Mat Bowls Club goes hi techAt the press of a button, the indoor bowlers in the Village Hall, are ready to enjoy their regular sessions by using their brand new state-of-the-art electric winding machine.

Setting up and storing the 45 feet long mats have been made child’s play, compared with the manual home-made unit, which has served the Club over the last 20 years.

Thanks to the generous support of Tewkesbury Borough Council, Active Together, Gloucestershire County Council and the Summerfield Trust, the double mat electric unit has been bought from the sole UK suppliers, ’Whitehead Bowls’ of Bridgwater, along with a new mat.

Without the support and generosity of these grant-giving bodies, it would have taken the Club at least 10 years of members’ subscriptions to have raised the £6000 to make these valuable purchases. The Club members wish to sincerely thank those who have given support to this venture.

Twyning Short Mat Bowls Club, which was founded 20 years ago, caters for all ages, but is especially used by Seniors, who enjoy the competitive exercise, friendly group spirit and mutual support, whatever their skill level or mobility. The huge benefit of the new equipment is that the heavy mats can be set out and stored away by any member of the Club without using excess physical effort.

Many happy years of bowling lie ahead in Twyning Village Hall.

A few comments from members sum up the value of this Club:

‘It is a test of skill with good exercise and all done in a competitive, but friendly atmosphere’

‘Bowling is a good game and improves with practice’

‘The new electric winding machine and new mat are fabulous. They are a joy to use’

‘A good social gathering and there is a friendly and supportive companionship in every session’

Twyning Village FeteThis year’s fete will take place on Bank Holiday Monday 29th August 2016 1-4pm

A whole array of entertainment is planned for the afternoon so why not come early – enjoy a BBQ lunch and afternoon tea or something stronger at the bar amid a host of stalls, sideshows and arena events. Not forgetting the chance to grab a bargain at our popular Car Boot Sale.

In the main arena, we are due to be entertained by Gloucester Morris Men, Bredon School of Dance and our ever popular Tug of War and Egg Throwing competitions.

In the Marquee, along with the refreshments, we shall be entertained by The Choir Factor and we will have our competitions, which provide a real focal point for visitors to the fete to enjoy. There are lots of categories, so why not have some fun and enter this year, hopefully there is something there that will catch your eye. Entry forms available from the Village Shop.

Raffle tickets will be on sale in the run up to the fete, and on the day, so don’t miss out as there are always many fantastic prizes to be won.

The Village Scarecrow competition will be returning and we hope that lots of you will enter. This year the theme is “Children’s TV Character(s)” (please see separate advert for further information).

If you would like to hold a stall on the day please contact us and let us know your ideas, so that we can avoid double ups and allocate an area for you. The fete is a great opportunity for you to raise funds for your cause; all we ask is that 10% of your takings are given to the fete organisers.

If you would like to get more involved in the run up to the fete or you can spare an hour or two to help out on the day we would love to hear from you. Many hands make light work!

How to help Twyning Recreation and Amenity Complex without even knowing!!!!As a charity we rely heavily on Memberships and the fete to raise vital funds as well as applying for grants wherever possible but it is not enough.

Did you know that whenever you buy anything online - from your weekly shop, annual holiday, to your car insurance - you could be raising a free donation for Twyning Recreation and Amenity Complex?

There are nearly 3,000 retailers on board ready to make a donation, including Amazon, John Lewis, Aviva, thetrainline and Sainsbury’s – it doesn’t cost you a penny extra!

It’s really simple, all you have to do is:

1. Join. Head to www.easyfundraising.org.uk/Twyning Recreation and Amenity Complex and sign up for free.

2. Shop. Every time you shop online, go to easyfundraising first, pick the retailer you want and start shopping.

3. Raise. After you’ve checked out, that retailer will make a donation to your good cause for no extra cost whatsoever!

There are no catches or hidden charges and TRAC will be really grateful for your donations.

Locally I know that this scheme works! Last year The High School for Girls Gloucester introduced the scheme and raised £705.33 and Pates raised a staggering £5,022!

So if you are working from home, and regularly buy paper or cartridges online, or you are booking your summer holiday please think of us first. Just by clicking on an extra couple of buttons you could be helping us raise vital funds needed to maintain the village play area to a high standard.

Thank you for your support

Horses on the GreenLast week, following a number of heavy downpours of rain, it was noticed that there were a considerable amount of deep hoof prints on the village green, an obvious trip hazard to users of the green on foot.

In these conditions, can horse riders crossing the green please be mindful of other users and the potential heath & safety issues that can occur, particularly with school children using this area for outdoor games. Thank You

Twyning Over-60 Lunch ClubHaving recovered from our Christmas Party, we began the New Year in fine style with attendances reaching 38 at times.

By the time you are reading this we will be celebrating our 30th Anniversary. This will be a special occasion for the club and the hall will have a festive look about it. The meal will be a celebratory buffet and a special cake for the occasion, all this helped, along with wine! We hope to revive memories of the early days of May 1986. I wonder how many lunches have been served since then?

Looking ahead, we finish on 23 July, but a Club Trip to Blenheim Palace is being organised for Friday 5 August. Also, during the summer break we are holding our informal lunch at Fleet Farm bungalow on Friday 19 August. If the weather is kind to us members can dine al fresco and watch the activities on the river. We resume our activities early in September.

Let us not forget the band of workers who descend on the Village Hall early on Fridays to get it ready before 9am, and thanks go to them

Fundraising for Acorns Children’s HospiceThe little woollen animals sold well again this year, despite Easter being early. A total of 2,645 animals were knitted and we made a profit of £2,030.65 and we were able to take a cheque to Acorns for £2,200, this included money raised from the Christmas Catalogues.

A big thank you to all our helpers whether you knitted, stitched, sold, donated eggs or allowed us to purchase eggs at a much reduced price! You have all contributed in some way to help us raise this sum of money for Acorns.

Too soon to think about Christmas, but later this month we will be receiving the Webb Ivory Christmas Catalogues (which will be put out of sight and out of mind until September!) more customers will be welcome - when the time comes.

On Sunday 17th July we will be having a Tombola Stall at the Tea Party Fundraiser for Acorns Childrens Hospice at Bird’s Farm. If you have any unwanted gifts or any new items, we would be pleased to accept them at the address below or will collect, if contacted

Twyning SchoolAfter a relatively short time as Chairman of the Finance & Premises Committee for our village school I have decided that school budgeting is a dark art! It is certainly beyond the scope of a short article to explain the mysteries of educational finance but I thought as a community you might appreciate a window into our current challenges. The Governors working with the Budget Manager & the Headteacher have recently flagged up some fairly lean years ahead. This is mainly linked to the demography of the village and a predicted fall in the school roll. What is to be done? You could all have babies! Even that unlikely event would take some time to work as we need to ensure a balanced intake of new pupils. There are of course the projected new build houses but again it is impossible to predict when this will happen and what effect this will have on our school. The Governors are addressing the immediate future by producing banners and other leaflets to ensure that our surrounding communities know that we have some places to fill. Many people just assume that our places are oversubscribed. Just as points in some cases mean prizes... our pupil count means income!

However this is not the only challenge. For example the change to National Insurance has given us an extra £10,000 to find! And the Government then reduces our income by a further 1.5% per annum. These are not the only hurdles but the easiest to explain now. Despite all these pressures the school is not in deficit and the Governors are actively taking measures to keep us on the right side of the line on the projected budget.

Can you help? Yes by dispelling the myth in the wider community that we are full and spreading the message that the ‘good’ village school in Twyning does have some vacancies. Also if you know of any possible partners or sponsors we can always use support to ensure that our children have the broadest education experience

Crime reduction adviceIf you would like a free crime prevention survey, this are offered by the Police. This is where a member of the Local Policing Team visits an address and identifies possible measures that can be put in place to prevent an individual becoming a victim of crime.

Details of your local policing team for Tewkesbury and Coombe Hill are given on the Gloucestershire Constabulary website, which has been recently updated with profiles. Your local community beat officers are PS Ian Morrison, PC Sally Allanson and PC Janina Millar. Your local PCSO’s are Karl Simpson, Gemma Wasley and Sam James.

Twyning Scout GroupThank you to everyone in the village for their kind messages of appreciation regarding the flowers which the Scouts planted last year by the cattle grid. Whilst the spring flowers were all in bloom it looked a real picture and hopefully as the year progresses other shrubs and plants will appear and continue to make the perfect welcome for people coming to our village.

Beavers (6-8) – meet Tuesday evenings 6pmSince our last bulletin entry, we have spent most of our Beaver evenings indoors due to the dark, cold and wet evenings. That doesn’t mean we haven’t been doing fun activities.

One of the badges that the Beavers really like is the experiment activity badge. We completed this badge by letting the Beavers find out what sinks and floats in different liquids, the effect of lemon juice on copper coins and the what happens to felt pen marks on blotting paper when dipped in water.

Our Challenge badge of the term was “My World”. This required the Beavers to find out about the world around them. That ranged from meeting someone who served the public, in our case, this was a nurse. They did a litter pick nearer the end of term when it was a bit lighter, learnt about the countries of the UK and went to a place of worship. The litter pick coincided with a “clean for Queen” initiative to tidy up the country for the Queens 90th birthday.

We were fortunate enough to be able to take the Beavers on an evening of Bowling at the Hollywood Bowl in Cheltenham. An evening that they all thoroughly enjoyed.

We had an evening dedicated to traditional board games. We played games such as Twister, dominos, Frustration, Happy Families and Connect 4.

February hosts the annual Tewkesbury District swimming gala. We have held the trophy for the past 4 or 5 years, but this year we came a close second. All of the Beavers swam their heart out, but couldn’t quite match Woodmancote. Well done to them. I am sure we will come back fighting next year.

The last 2 badges we completed were the Collector Activity badge and the Sport Activity badge. The collector badge was particularly interesting as the Beavers all brought in items that they collect or have recently started

collecting. Although we did get a number of Match Attax collections, we did some interesting ones such as rocks & fossils, nail polishes and cuddly dogs.

We said a sad goodbye to our young leaders, Willow and Izzy. Both have been with us for 4 years and done a fantastic job during that time. We also said goodbye to Rod and Steve, although Kate has kindly stepped in to cover to Steve. Despite this, we are still well supported by Kelly, Mark, Tim and Holly.

We saw 5 Beavers leave us as they move up to Cubs with only 2 new Beavers joining in April. This has left us with an all-time low number of 16. At the end of this term we will see a further 7 move on to Cubs and currently only have 3 due to start in September. So if you know of anyone interested in joining us, then please let me know. Beavers is open to boys and girls between 6 and 8 years old and meet on Tuesday evenings 6 to 7pm during term time. If you have a child between those ages that would like to join the fun, please email Mark Salisbury ([email protected]) to request an application form. Even if your child is younger than that, please request a form, we can add them to the list now.

Mark Salisbury – Beaver Leader 01684 296026 [email protected]

Cubs (8-10) – meet Thursday evenings 6.15pm

2016 is the Centenary of Cubs, and through the year Cubs will have lots of activities to celebrate. As part of the celebration all Cubs and leaders received centenary neckers and a badge.

We started the term with a 1916 evening playing original Cub games and one of our Cubs dressed up in an old uniform. The following meeting, we created Robot Cubs for the year 2116. We continued our centenary theme by completing a Wolf Cub Home Orderly badge where cubs learnt how to make a pot of tea (with tea leaves), clean brass and windows, and cook fried egg and potato wedges.

We had an “Adventure” camp at Cranham in March where we were blessed with lovely weather. During the weekend the cubs gained their Chef’s badge

cooking their Saturday meal. The cubs learnt to build shelters, light fires, tie knots and basic first aid. We had plenty of time burning off energy including a night hike, an adventure hike, wide games, and finished with Cranham’s mega assault course.

Matthew, Piers and Tom organised a fun ‘leavers’’ evening as they prepared to move on to scouts.

During recent terms we prepared for our ‘Thanks event’, to look back at cubs in the village and welcome ex- cub leaders. The Cubs made invitations and posters. They spent the previous meeting evening making cakes. We held the event at school and on the day there were lots of craft activities and scouting skills bases, where Cubs showed their parents what happens at cubs, as well as eating all the cakes! We were delighted that 3 ex-Akela’s, Bill Chescoe, Keith Bullock and Alison Peake as well as our District Commissioner, came to tell us their stories.

The next day we had our District St Georges Day service at the Abbey. We had a great turn out and we were able to parade along the High Street.

Cubs is currently operating a waiting list for those not in beavers.

Dave Green – Cub Leader 01684 296284 [email protected]

Scouts (10-14) – meet Thursday evenings 7.30pm

Last term 6 of our older Scouts completed their Chief Gold Scout Award, and they worked really hard to complete all the elements required before the old badge system came to an end. The younger scouts will now work towards a new badge scheme and have made a great start by completing their Personal Challenge award. They each had to challenge themselves to approach members of the community and complete 6 different tasks. There was a real variety of things from washing a neighbours car, collecting someone’s shopping, walking a dog, to helping out at Twyning Luncheon Club.

In April we had the Saint Georges Day Parade and all groups in the Tewkesbury District were invited to parade from Sun Street to the Abbey. In preparation we spent an evening with Pershore Air Cadets trying to learn how to march, in just one hour!

Thankfully summer is just round the corner and the scouts will be out and

about, pitching tents, building camp fires, canoeing and outback cooking. We are also having a local camp in June, which will be combined with a day at the Three Counties Show where the Scouts will complete a special badge.

We are still looking for a new leader(s) to come forward to help, so that we can continue to provide fun packed and exciting programmes. If you think you might like to join us please do get in touch. In the meantime I am grateful to Steve Ide and to our Young Leaders, Tom and Poppy who help each week and to all the parents for their continued support

Twyning PlayersAs I’m writing this piece, it’s the second night of our Spring production: ‘Curtain Up on Murder’. Thanks to all of our loyal audience supporters and we do hope that you enjoyed the performance, managing to pick up on the clues and avoid the red herrings.

A bit of a breather now for Players, although there are often jobs to get done between performances such as refurbishing the scenery as well as planning for the next production. That will be happening on 8th, 9th and 10th December – panto time again! There’ll be more details nearer the time but do make a note of the dates as, if previous years are anything to go by, tickets will be in great demand once they go on sale.

During the summer, Players’ social calendar continues including our annual barbecue.

Explorer scoutsActivities this term have been focussed on training for expeditions, fun scouting skills and events.

In January we started off with a training walk from one end of the Malverns to the other. February saw us in the Peak District, experiencing rain driven by 40mph winds – character building! In March we were in the Brecon Beacons, where we managed a full days walking before the rain started. It was up to Snowdonia in April – walking in the mountains, rock climbing and canoeing on the lake at Llanberis. Whilst there, one of our Gold DofE expedition teams were assessed for personal hill walking permits, confirming their ability to safely navigate and wild camp in the mountains as a peer-led group.

With all the training behind them, the explorers are ready to complete their remotely supervised expeditions (exams being the first priority of course) either walking, canoeing or a combination of both, before heading up to the Lake District (or France) later in the summer, to complete the assessed expeditions at Bronze, Silver and Gold levels of the DofE award.

In between the mountain activities, the explorers have been brushing up on their first aid skills, archery, pioneering (lashing together wooden poles to make giant catapults, cooking pancakes with tin cans and tea lights, winning the swimming gala, and regular canoeing on the Avon.

Although the unit currently has 42 young people on the books, we will be losing about 20 over the next 12 months, as they turn 18 and have to leave explorers. We therefore have space for young people moving on from scouts, or those new to scouting from age 13½.

A big thank you to all the leaders and parents who helped make all the adventures possible

Tewkesbury VIPsIt started with Twyning ‘rock star’ Sam Strachan, busking one cold February afternoon outside Boots in Tewkesbury. Sam was asked to come and entertain our visually impaired club members and was a great success. Sam’s Dad, Jerry, is Director of Drama at St Edward’s School, Charlton Kings and Jerry subsequently invited the club to the school, to be hosted by the very talented students, now including Sam. On Wednesday 4th May, Tewkesbury VIPs enjoyed a great afternoon of entertainment and hospitality at the school.

The hire of special transport for the visit was made possible by generous donations from Steph and Wes at Twyning Village Stores, Severn Vale Housing, Tewkesbury Baptist Church and Tewkesbury Borough Council.

In June, the VIPs will have another outing and enjoy a cream tea on board on the Gloucestershire and Warwickshire Steam Railway. Later this year, a visit to the Mechanical Music Museum at Northleach is on the cards; an excellent experience for those who don’t see too well. Again, wheelchair transport will be available, supported by our generous sponsors.

TVIPs are also very grateful for the support received from our volunteer drivers and helpers, many of whom are Twyning residents

If you know of anyone who is visually impaired or even just a bit lonely – or you would like to help with our very worthwhile cause, please contact: Christopher Chapman, Volunteer Organiser 01684 293527 [email protected]

Twyning Village Community Charity Group newsAfter another successful year of fundraising, in which we finally managed to achieve our target of £3,000.00 following a Race Night in March, we were pleased to be able to present representatives of our 3 chosen charities for the last financial year, Cotswold RDA, Linc and MNDA Gloucestershire with a cheque for 1K each at our presentation evening on Friday 1st April for our supporters with a buffet courtesy of Gary and Sandra and entertainment from Sam Strachan at The Village Inn.

In addition to this, Gary and Sandra have continued to raise money for the local community fund, and a number of individuals who have suffered loss of some kind have benefitted from this. If you are aware of any one in need please do let us know.

After much deliberation, we are pleased to announce that the 2 charities we have chosen to fundraise for this year are:

Headway Gloucestershire – a small local charity dedicated to improving life after brain injury by providing essential services across the county for people with acquired brain injuries, their parents, families, friends and carers. See www.headwaygloucestershire.org.uk for further details.

Hope Support Services – a registered charity set up in 2009 to support young people when a close family member is diagnosed with a life threatening illness such as cancer. Although based in Ross on Wye, Hope helps young people aged 11-18 across the whole of Gloucestershire. See www.hopesupport.org.uk for further details.

To this end we are busy preparing for our major fundraising event of the year:

The Annual Family Fun and Charity Cricket Day on Saturday 9th July from 12noon on The Village Green where 12 teams of 6 will compete for trophies presented in memory of May Spurway, Colin Harber and Dave Baker.

Apart from the cricket, there will be the usual attractions, bbq, tea tent, face painting, grand draw etc followed by the presentation of trophies, pig roast and evening entertainment in The Village Inn.

The committee would like to take this opportunity to thank you for your continued support and look forward to seeing you on the 9th July and would especially welcome donations of cakes for the tea tent on the day.

We have deliberately set the date earlier this year to allow families and youth groups from the village to take part and look forward to receiving your entries. Please sign up your team on the sheet in the Village Inn by Monday 6th June at the latest. In the interests of fair play teams should include at least 1 female and an under 16yr old (this may be the same person) Fancy dress optional!

Subs are £30 for a team of 6 (£5 per person) payable at The Village Inn, in a named envelope

Gary, Ian, Jacky, Jan, Jo, Julie, Sandra and Shaun TVCCG. Email: [email protected] for further details.

TRAC

We are pleased to report that in the last few weeks the work to replace the play area boundary fence has been completed and, if you have time to pop down to TRAC and have a look, I am sure you will agree that it looks fantastic. We were successful in being awarded a grant for 18% of the total cost of the project by Tewkesbury Borough Council and Twyning Parish Council also supported us by paying £7500, with TRAC funding the balance. TRAC has now been open for 18 years and some of the equipment is starting to show signs of ageing therefore we are looking into preparing a 5 year plan towards the maintenance and replacement of the Play Area equipment.

TRACs funds come solely from grants, membership fees and the fete and as last year’s fete was another rainy one, our funds are starting to rapidly deplete. Therefore we do urge users of the courts to support us by becoming members. By becoming a member you have full use of the facilities available at TRAC, excluding the 2 main Tennis Courts. You may use the two courts nearest the Pavilion at any time, but priority will be given to people who have booked courts over casual use (if you wish to book a court, in order to secure availability, please see website for details). The price of membership is just £12.50 per year (£1.00 per month) for an adult and £5.00 per year for a child under 18, so please do join if you are using the site. If you are not a user of the TRAC facilities but you would still like to support us please see the article within this bulletin regarding “Easyfundraising”, your help would be very much appreciated.

As you may have already heard instead of the Barn Dance this year we are holding a “Twyning Bash” where we will see a highly rated band called the “No Good Nancys” perform for us. This is a family event and ticket prices have been held at £13.00 per adult and £5.00 child 12 and under. So put the date in your diary!

Lastly can we please remind you that, in line with our leasehold agreement, dogs are not allowed on the TRAC site at anytime! If you are leaving your dog tied up outside the gate to TRAC please ensure that it does not disturb any of the residents nearby

NDP Update May 2016Yes, the team are still working on the Twyning NDP, notably Denis Murray, Dave Luckett and Bill O’Dell, who have attended so many meetings. Tewkesbury Borough Council have wanted to discuss every point, and we have negotiated over many policy details in order to find an acceptable solution.

As has been stressed throughout, the final version of the NDP will have statutory status, but it does have to conform and comply with two main frameworks: the Joint Core Strategy (the over-arching plan for Cheltenham, Gloucester and Tewkesbury) and the emerging Tewkesbury Borough Plan. We also have to recognise the housing development quota in these frameworks as they effect our status as a Service Village.

Before the final document is presented for approval at a parish referendum, there will be a public 6 week consultation period during which you may all comment on the NDP contents. We need to have the NDP as a policy document for the future (up to 2031) and for this we seek your support. While it is true that the NDP is not going to be exactly as we wanted, it still represents the best chance we have to protect the parish as a whole.

Please follow our progress on www.twyningvillage.co.uk. You can leave a message on the forum there, or you can contact us via any of the Parish councillors should you wish to do so.

We are all volunteers, and this is continuing to take up far more time than we could have imagined, so we will all be very relieved when it is finalised. Thank you

Twyning Village Playgroup is an Ofsted registered playgroup which looks after children aged from 2 years until they go to primary school. We are based in Twyning Village Hall and run Monday to Thursday during term time, 9.15am until 1pm. We provide a really friendly and fun learning environment - including French for pre-schoolers! The Playgroup is also a great way to get your children mixing with children they will be going to school with, and helping with the transition to Twyning School.

A lot has been happening at Twyning Village Playgroup over the last 3 months. The volunteer committee which runs the playgroup and raise funds changes each year, so at our annual AGM in March we said goodbye and thank you to the majority of the old committee and welcomed in a new group of local mums and dads. The new committee remain keen to raise funds as well as helping the playgroup move forward. Our plans include setting up a new website and using technology to help the team that work at the playgroup on a day to day basis record the children’s activities more efficiently and effectively.

We have many exciting plans for the summer term, including our summer outing to Newbridge Farm Park; our annual sports day; making the most of the sunshine with lots of outdoor play; and watching our vegetables grow in our new planters. We will also be spending time with our pre-schoolers getting them ready to start at Twyning School in September. We work closely with the school to ensure this transition is as seamless as possible - this includes an excellent buddy system as well as visiting the school once a week to play in the computer room or in the playground.

If you would like any further information on the Playgroup feel free to contact me on [email protected]

Twyning Community Minibus – Calling all precept payers! The Twyning minibus has done great service over the past 10 years. During that time, many people and organisations have had the benefit of using it in return for a donation towards covering the running costs. The Parish Council are concerned that running costs could escalate as the bus gets older and are wondering whether to replace the minibus now – or at all.

Over the last 3 years, Twyning residents represent 56% of the users, and the remainder come from neighbouring Parishes, currently contributing to the running costs as users from Twyning Parish. On average, the minibus is used 5 days a month – this may well be on 8 or 9 separate occasions as 75% of uses are for a half day.

Although the Council will be looking for grant funding, it is likely that in order to get a good second hand replacement vehicle, we will need to spend around £10,000 of money provided by the precept payers of Twyning.

If it is to the benefit of the community, spending this money to replace the mini bus could be justified. To find your views on this we need to know what you, the residents of the Parish think. The Parish Council have set up a survey on the www.twyningvillage.co.uk website – on the front page – and it will be there for a limited period of time – so please go on line and make your feelings known. Your views are important and will help the Council make a decision.

Alternatively, e-mail [email protected] – or write to Jeremy Horsfall, Thistledown, 3 Meadow Gardens, Twyning, Glos GL20 6JL – or attend Twyning Parish Council meetings on 18 July at 7.30pm Twyning Village Hall and let us know what you think; and please encourage other residents to do the same

Picnic on the Green to celebrate Her Majesty’s 90th BirthdayYou and your family are invited to bring a picnic lunch and share time with friends old and new to celebrate this momentous event.

Apologies to those in the Parish who did not receive a flyer but hopefully the word has spread and you all know about this event which is being held on Sunday 12th June 2016 on The Green from 1pm onwards.

Please come prepared to celebrate this patriotic celebration in style! Red, white and blue essential!!

We will be marking out an area in the middle of the Green for people to place their picnic blankets but if, heaven forbid, the weather is not in our favour and anyone wishes to bring a gazebo they can be erected on the outskirts of the Green but anyone doing so does this entirely at their own risk.

The Parish Council have kindly agreed to the use of the Green for this event and have funded the bunting and the fliers. On the day The Village Inn will be open and their toilets will be accessible to everyone on the Green. All that we ask is that at the end of the day you take all your litter home and leave the Green as you found it

If you have any queries prior to the event please contact Lorna on 294292

Children’s SocietyAt the time of writing this report most of the Children’s Society boxes have been emptied (I still have 4 to go!) and I am delighted to report that over the past 12 months the box-holders have raised a fantastic total of £531.30.

If anyone else feels that they too can help, do please contact me for a box. You just sit the little box on your worktop and pop some coppers/change in it when you can. The boxes are emptied once a year, unless you request otherwise, and really that is all there is to it and it is amazing how soon those coppers add up!

So thank you to everyone, every penny is gratefully received by the Children’s Society helping them to keep children safe.

If you would like a box please call: 294292

Alpha Course – starting this Autumn in Twyning!Every wondered what an Alpha Course is or what it involves? The church and chapel in Twyning are running one in the Village Hall beginning at the end of September on Friday evenings where you can discuss subjects around Christianity such as: Who is Jesus, why did he die, how can we have faith, why and how do I pray, why and how should I read the Bible. At each session, after sharing a meal together, there will be a presentation for each topic followed by an opportunity for discussion in small groups about what has been said. The sessions are intended to be as open and non-threatening as possible about the Christian faith that has inspired many millions of people throughout the world for over two millennia.
