TERM 1, WEEK 11 2017 What to look for in this issue * 20 th Anniversary * Enviro News * Friends and Family Meeting MESSAGE FROM THE PRINCIPAL HAPPY 20 TH BIRTHDAY POINT VIEW SCHOOL Celebrating birthdays is always fun and we certainly had a great time celebrating our school’s 20 th birthday on Friday. We started with a wonderful assembly where our kapa haka group, siva dance group, ukelele band and choir showcased some of the amazing talent in the school, along with some performances that showed what our classes have been doing in music this term. Thanks to the wonderful crowd of parents who joined us. That added to the atmosphere. I lost count of how many times the students sang happy birthday throughout the day. The anniversary cake was cut by our two second generation Point View students, Sarah Stephenson’s son Zayden Berry from Year 2 and Lee Evan’s son Chase van Stee from Year 5. In the evening our alumni event was a great success. We had a wonderful turnout of past parents, students and teachers. Past Board Chair Andrew Duncan was MC. Current Board Chair Grant Webster, Establishment Board Chair John Puzey and Foundation Principal Neil Shroff spoke. The kapa haka group performed again and current student Jennifer Wu joined with past student Esther Oh to perform on the piano and violin. This time we have invited the school’s first elected chairperson, Paul Townend, and his daughter Brigette, a foundation student, to cut the cake. Paul, Anne and Brigette Townend had travelled up from their home near Timaru for the celebration and we are delighted that they could represent the foundation students and parents in this way. I would like to thank Justine Ross, past Family and Friends Chairperson and organiser of our inaugural Twilight Market in 2015 for organising this event. Justine worked with Robyn Hibberd, Neil Shroff, Dianne Finlayson and Rodney Creed to plan the event and to dress the hall for the evening. Along with Justine, our admin staff members Trish Tanner, Sandy Walker and Adrienne McIlvride worked tirelessly to promote the event, organise refreshments and service, and keep everything running smoothly on the night. Thanks to all these people and all our teachers who opened their classrooms in the afternoon and supported the event. This was an important event in our school’s history that was celebrated in style. Family and Friends

We have an ice block day on Thursday to say thanks for all the support with the Twilight Market. Family and Friends will hold their next meeting on Tuesday 2 May at 7pm in the staffroom. All parents are welcome to attend and we would love to have some new parents join us in our planning for this year.

Enviro News

At our Week 9 assembly, Emelia and Kathryn from Room 27 and Mia and Ivan from Room 16 reminded students which bins to use to make sure our recycling at Point View is going to the right places.

There is also a lot of food waste at school and we are thinking of ways to try and reduce the amount going into the bins. Please check with your child that they have the right amount of lunch and that they are actually eating it! The feijoas in the Hive are ripening up and next term the BEE groups hope to eat some of them raw and also make something delicious such as feijoa ice cream. If the weather allows, enjoy some time in the garden with your children during the holidays, maybe planting some vegetables that the children can care for.

Twilight Magic On Friday Pointview School had a very, very fun Friday. It was a .... Twlight Market! The big slide was there and I went fast. I was sore because I went too fast and I had candy floss to help me feel better. Then I went to the hive. It was a leprechaun hunt and I found one. But if you found a gold one that means that we get a whole box of the little chocolates. By Ellie Warden, Room 7 (5 years old)

Rippa Rugby Twelve of our Year 5 and 6 boys and girls went to the Eastern Zone Rippa Rugby tournament. Twenty schools took part in the tournament this year. We won all our pool games against Sylvia Park B, Point England C, St Thomas B, Panmure District and Bailey Road. We then moved onto the semi-finals where we beat Point England B to advance to the final. The final was hotly contested but, unfortunately, we didn't quite manage the win and came second to Point England A. As usual all our students showed great sportsmanship, skills and teamwork. They can feel very proud of their efforts. Thank you Preston Doctor for coaching the team.

NEWS FROM THE TRAVELWISE TEAM Because your brains are in your head, you

need to protect it!

This week we take a look at helmet safety.

We know that helmets are hot and

uncomfortable … and they make helmet

hair!

Did you know that just last week an adult

had an accident on a scooter on Waiheke

island and needed to be hospitalised? She

wasn’t wearing a helmet!

Why do you need a helmet? Well, you need

one because it keeps you safe when you are

biking or scootering. When you fall, you are

less likely to hurt your head.

Some safety checks: 1. Make sure the helmet fits you snuggly so

that the straps don’t go above your mouth

when you lift them.

2. Make sure you click the straps together

EVERY time you wear it.

3. Make sure that the foam inside is NOT

damaged. If it is, it’s time to replace the

helmet.
