The Nomads’ Information

Welcome back to Deeside and welcome back to the Welsh Premier LeagueI would like to offer a warm welcome to Port Talbot Town and their Manager Mark Jones whom I highly respect. Our first game at home in the new season is a massive one as our home form is going to be vital to having a decent 1st season back in the top level.

Going back to the Bangor City game last Friday, we went into the game with a few players who were carrying niggling injuries, and after going behind to a poorly defended corner, the lads reacted as I would expect them to and gave the game a massive go. The move that led to Dean Canning’s goal was what we are about and we should have maybe gone in 2-1 in front with Mike Thompson going close right on half time.

The second half saw us come out of our shells even more after a few first half nerves, and defended well and had it not been for an early contender for save of the season Dean would have had a second with a great shot only to be denied by the keeper tipping it onto the bar. We looked dangerous for 20 mins, and it seem to be heading for a draw but a quick pitch and a missed foul led to a penalty which we have no complaints about with no blame going to hooley as well it was a sucker punch .

We need to bounce back today and we will be doing all we can to try and put our first points back in the Welsh Premier League on the board.

Come on The Nomads!

Last minute penalty drama robs The NomadsThe Nomads came away empty handed, but with their heads held high after giving Bangor City a run for their money in a very entertaining game. In the end a penalty awarded 30 seconds into stoppage time, gave Bangor the opportunity to claim the 3 points when it looked as though the game would end as a draw.

It took time for The Nomads to settle into the game and there were signs of nervousness from a number of players as they tried to adapt to the pace of the WPL against a highly rated Bangor side who came straight at The Nomads and John Rushton was forced into his first save as early as the 4th minute. With The Nomads still adapting to the pace of the game, Bangor took an early lead in the 9th minute when Chris Simm scored with a simple tap-in, after the Bangor left back had forced a very good blocking save from John Rushton.

The Nomads continued to soak up the pressure as Bangor pushed forward, but by continuing to play their passing football style, the Nomads started to move the action into the Bangor half. The Nomads’ hard work was rewarded in the 42nd minute when Dean Canning equalized after a superb crossfield pass from Ricky Evans to Alan Hooley. A quick pass movement between Hooley and Michael Thompson saw a low cross from Hooley fall into the path of Dean Canning, who converted our first league goal of the season. The first half ended with The Nomads almost scoring a second goal, as Michael Thomson shot narrowly wide.

The second half started with a near miss from Bangor in the 47th minute, but quickly the game reverted to end to end moves, as both sides looked to take control of the game. In the 62nd minute Dean Canning hit a superb shot from all of 30 yards, which was acrobatically tipped onto the bar by the Bangor ‘keeper.

The remainder of the game saw Bangor still pressing and The Nomads looking for an opportunity to get a winner on the break. The Nomads’ defence was playing very well with Michael Robinson, Danny Dobbins, Alan Hooley and Mark McGregor, coping well with the lively Bangor forwards led by Les Davies.

As full-time approached with the fourth official showing 3 added minutes, disaster struck for The Nomads, as a ball into the penalty area shot up off the wet surface and struck Alan Hooley’s hand. Not a deliberate handball, but the referee awarded a penalty. Dave Morley stepped up and drove comfortably past John Rushton.

With only a couple of minutes left the Nomads put Rhys Healey on in place of Dean Canning but the game ended with no further chances for the Nomads to pull a goal back.

An excellent performance by the Nomads once they got over their initial nervousness. They showed they can compete at this level and they must have impressed The Citizens’ fans with the style of football they played.

Green’s Piece

Welcome to the Deeside Stadium for the first Welsh Premier fixture we have played here since our unwarranted demotion from a 13th place finish in the 2009/10 season. Double championships of the Cymru Alliance have sent us back in great heart but we knew before last Friday that we were going up through quite a class gap. However, many of the players who turned out for us at Bangor had played at this level before and we thought we would be OK. We may have lost 2-1 (being mugged by a 92nd minute penalty), but many positives came out of our display. For me seeing the young trio of top flight debutants Rushton, Dobbins and Robinson look so at ease was really encouraging. We lost but might have won. We were competitive and played well.

We welcome a club so like us in many ways today. A self made club from an industrial conurbation who sometimes struggles to draw a crowd, but who have quality if not quantity of support. In chairman Andrew Edwards they have a driving force behind the Welsh Premier.

In manager Mark Jones they have perhaps the most respected manager in Welsh Football, a man who can treat triumph and adversity in equal measure. They and the players, officials and supporters who have travelled up from the far South are very welcome.

Club Secretary and Licensing Officer Trevor Green gives us his views following the Bangor City game and ahead of today’s visit of Port Talbot Town.

Talking of support! How good it was to see the group from the Nomads Lads List, gathered behind the goal on Friday in all that bad weather chanting away for the side. In a crowd of over 800 all you could here at times were pro Nomads chants. Well done the Wet thirty. Unfortunately, the reaction of the host’s supporters was less than we might have hoped for, it was a shame to suffer the throwback to the 1970’s that can be a trip to Bangor. To hear afterwards that the lads had been roughed up as they tried to leave the Stadium was a shame.

A bigger shame was to discover that whilst getting on the coach a hail of rocks had smashed a window. With a player’s mother and grandmother sitting in the seats aside the window, the potential for shock and physical injury was real. Fortunately the re-enforced double glazing saw only one side shatter, but it was a far from pleasant experience for them. We do not hold Bangor directly responsible for the actions of those who cannot behave in a sociable manor. However, this is becoming a feature of our trips to the Town. Last time we sent a side (our under16’s) the game was abandoned after players were struck by missiles thrown at them. This time we were under similar attack. There is a problem here, not of the clubs making, but it does need a solution.

We hope you like the look of the new look match programme and the stadium with a few more banners and colouring evident. It is really good to have the eye for design and creativity of Nik and the drive of the new commercial team behind us. Next Saturday we welcome Llanelli here also at 2:30pm then on September 8th we travel to Newtown and we are hoping to find a coach company willing to transport us after Friday’s experience. We will, so please reserve a seat today. Finally many thanks to Mark, Martin, Gareth and Phil for giving of their time, enthusiasm and expertise to officiate today.

Enjoy the game

Trevor

The Nomads secure new shirt sponsorship deal

The sponsorship marks a new phase in the club’s marketing strategy and will build on the success and move in to the Welsh Premier League. Nomads were Champions of the Huws Gray Cymru Alliance in 2010/11, but failure to obtain a domestic license ruled out promotion. Following a league record breaking successive Huws Gray Cymru Alliance Championship in season 2011/12, Nomads obtained a domestic licence and return to the top flight this year

Dave commented: “with our promotion l hope we can also encourage further local business interest and support.”

gap Connah’s Quay Football Club is delighted to announce a new two year shirt sponsorship deal with Lincolnshire based accountancy solutions company Think Accounting Ltd. Football Club Chairman Dave Jones said: “This is fantastic news for the club in these difficult financial times and extremely encouraging that such a prestigious company has seen an opportunity to promote their business and their brand in Wales.”

Port Talbot Town FC’ Club History

Formed initially in 1901, Port Talbot spent their early years playing in the Swansea Senior League. A long hard slog in the lower echelons ended in 1982/83 when they finished as runners up to Tondu Robins, and won promotion to the first division. Port Talbot were included in the prestigious new National Division of the Welsh League in 1984/85. After a period of consolidation, they finished 5th in 1997/98 under David Rees and Craig Duggan during their first season in the managerial hot seat. Since then, the club has been transformed off the field, with Andrew Edwards taking over as Chairman at the start of the 1998/99 season.

At this point a three-year master plan was put into operation, which included taking the club to the League of Wales by its centenary year in 2001/02. The success of the 1999/2000 season saw the club promoted to the League of Wales a year ahead of schedule. Many improvements were carried out to the Victoria Road Ground with refurbished dressing rooms, a new 260-seater stand, floodlights, television camera gantry, turnstiles and a hard standing around the pitch. The club reached the semi-finals of the Welsh Cup in 2003/4 for the first time in their history, but hopes of a foray into Europe were dashed in a 1-0 defeat by TNS at Park Avenue.

Following the departure of manager Mark Jones to Carmarthen, the Steelmen found it difficult to replicate their success in 2004/5 and spent much of the season battling relegation, although they eventually finished a relatively comfortable 13th under manager Wayne Davies. Off the field the club have continued to progress as much as they have on the field, the seating capacity has been boosted to 1,000 with the construction of the 750 seater Gerald McCreesh Stand. Hospitality facilities have been improved with the building of the Gerald McCreesh Suite overlooking the ground

while the heavy investment into the playing surface has made it one of the best grounds in the Welsh Premier League.

In December 2008 Mark Jones was re-appointed as manager and quickly turned-around the clubs fortunes by achieving a fifth place finish despite the side being in the bottom half of the table on his arrival.A superb season in 2009-2010 saw the club qualify for the UEFA Europa League for the first time with a 3rd place finish. The club also reached the Welsh Cup Final for the first time but narrowly lost 3-2 to Bangor City at Parc-y-Scarlets. Since that high water season the club has comfortably survived as a mid table outfit in a greatly improving competition. 2012/13sees the side strengthened and they were amongst many peoples outside bets for honours. The brilliant signing of League Golden Boot Rhys Griffiths was the icing on a well prepared side, however at the last moment Plymouth offered Griffiths a pro contract and Port Talbot continue without him.

Page 22: The Nomads vs Port Talbot Town Match Programme (25-08-2012)

Hello and welcome to ‘A view from the stand’, where after a two year wait we can finally welcome Welsh Premier League football back to Deeside. The action however started a week ago at Nantporth, where we played our first game of the season against none other than Bangor City.

After weeks of waiting, The Nomads could finally burst onto the Welsh Premier League scene last Friday night, but it hardly started with a bang. Bangor straight away took hold of the game and after just 9 minutes were 1-0 up. Still, we held our own throughout a first half battering at the hands of Bangor, and many fans in the stand would have been happy with the 1-0 at half time. As it turned out the half time score was 1-1 after Dean Canning scored to lift The Nomads’ spirits.

In the second half we came out much stronger, defending solidly and creating more chances. Just as it seemed The Nomads was going to steal the draw, Bangor were given a lucky lifeline by the referee who pointed to the spot after an alleged handball by Alan Hooley. Dave Morley stepped up, and sealed a win for Bangor.

The lads will be disappointed with the result, but after the full time whistle everyone involved with The Nomads could feel proud. Macca’s men had held their own against one of the best teams in Welsh football, proving those who had doubts we can play at this level.

The Nomads’ Supporters Liaison Officer Will Caterall gives us his view from the stand following our return to the Welsh Premier League.

The pride stretches far beyond the team however, as we had fifteen supporters getting drenched in the rain making more noise than some 800 Bangor fans in the shelter of a stand.

Support is something we really want to stress this season. We have tried in the past, but it really hasn’t come to anything so this season we want a change. Steps have already been taken, as we have established a young supporters group – the ‘Nomads Lads’. The Nomads Lads are basically a start for an eventual official supporters club ran by supporters. Right now, the Nomads Lads is a group for young supporters which will offer discounts on Nomads merchandise and travel to some away games. ‘Nomads Lads’ members will get 20% off all Nomads merchandise and subsidised entry to all home games. You honestly will not find an offer for young supporters like this at any other club, so if you know any young people that may be interested, please let them know.

The Nomads know they face a tough challenge at surviving this year. We know we have the quality football to keep the Welsh Premier League at Deeside but to do this there is work to do off the pitch. Support is going to be a big factor this season, so please get behind the lads this season, starting today! Solid South-Walians Port Talbot Town are the team we entertain today, and it will be far from an easy challenge.

The ‘Nomads Lads’ Player of the weekJohn RushtonStrange to think only this time last season we hardly knew this goalkeepers skill. In almost no time since joining The Nomads Rushton cemented a first team place and has been there for the team when it counts, for just last week he excelled at putting Bangor’s attacks to a halt. Strength is a huge part of football nowadays, and John ensures that The Nomads have it at the back.

Academy Update

A great week for The AcademyA big weekend of action for the club and academy which saw our first and reserve teams kick off their competitive season with games against Bangor City as well as our under 12 and 14 sides in action against FC Spartans.

U12 and U14 sides to take part in Stoke City tournamentUnfortunately since the revised dates our U11’s and U13’s are unavailable and the U15’s competition has been postponed. The revised competition which was due to take place last month is taking place this Saturday morning at Stone Dominoes Football Club.

Our under 12s are taking part in a 6 a side tournament with two teams entered with our under 14s in 11 a side action. We wish both teams the best of luck in the event.

U12’s, U14’s and U19’s enjoyed some good resultsA good weekend of games saw 2 games against FC Spartans and 1 against Bangor City. The weekend of games began on Friday evening when our under 12 and 14 sides played host to local Wirral based teams FC Spartans.

The link was made following first team goalkeeper John Rushton’s work coaching the local teams goalkeepers in his home town area. Our under 12s who had been in all last week on their academy camp put there extra training into good practice winning their game 5-0

Max Moore grabbed himself two goals as well as man of the match with a very strong performance with Lewis Hughes also grabbing a brace and a single from Coel Lambert.

Our under 14s had a tougher game than the 12s but still came away with a three one victory with two great free kick goals from Iwan Rogers and Andrew Ely and a well taken headed goal from Danny Chambers. Man of the match went to Owen Edwards who was outstanding in the centre of defence in only his second game for the academy.

Another great week of Academy camps which saw our U12’s enjoy 2 fantastic training daysUnder 12s put through there paces in preparations for new 2012-2013 season.Like the previous two camps the under 12 players followed a programme focused on the following areas: Making it Count – (Finishing) Combining to Attack – (Passing) Winning the Battle – (Defending) NIKE SPARQ training – (agility, speed etc) Dominating the 1v1 – (individual skill)

As well as the sessions above all players also took part in three skills tests which focused on passing, control and dribbling. All players gained scores over these three tests based on how well they completed the task.

Academy Update

28

These three tests have been put together and have a handicap on them which will allow the younger and older players in the academy to be tested against one another.

A big congratulation to the skills school winner which was won by:

Coel Lambert who scored an impressive 520 points over the three tests. The most of any academy player to date.

All training for the week was focused on the Manchester United 4v4 methods which saw all players finish sessions with this format of games, with different team and individual challenges through out.

All players were fantastic through out the two day camp which was intense, and really worked all the players hard. 2 Different trophies were given out over the week for a Player of the Day award.

The awards were given out based on how well the player handled the sessions in the day both from the technical and skill side as well as when putting it into action in the 4v4 situation. As well as this key factors such as the players attitude and discipline over the day as well as behavior when off the pitch as well as on it. A big well done to Luke Jones and Charlie Roberts who won these awards.

The two day camp ended on Thursday afternoon when the players took part in a 4v4 competition which saw them all play in 9 different games where they were always placed with different players both for and against.

The competition was based on the individual with 10 points for the win, 5 for a draw and extra points given out by coaches if great individual flare was shown or a top quality team goal.

The win of the fantastic two hour competition was won by Lewis Davey who gained a superb 48 points.

A fantastic week for all concerned and we look forward to next week’s three day camp which will see our under 9s/10s sides come to Dock Road. We have a limit of 16 players so book your place early if interested.

The training camp will run from Tuesday to Thursday at Dock Road from 10:00-15:00 for just £30 for the three days.

Players must bring packed lunches and drinks for the day.

Following next week we will be running the following aged academy camps:

Tuesday 21st August to Thursday 23rd August – Under 9/10Tuesday 29th August to Thursday 31st August – Under 14/15

Again these are academy camps in which all players will be following a strict programme and will be tested to a high level over the three days.

In order to book your place you must contact your age group coach immediately or contact Jay Catton.

7. Jamie PetrieJamie originally signed for Nomads from Congleton Town in the summer of 2007, but he left in the December to join Knutsford. Jamie finally returned to us in July 2009. He is an out-and-out traditional winger who can play on either flank and has pace to burn. He also occasionally features up front.

After outstanding performances throughout Nomads second successive Championship season in the HG Cymru Alliance last season, Jamie virtually swept the board at Nomads Awards Presentation evening. He received the Managers Player of the Season, Supporters Player of the Season and the Players Player of the Season.

Jamie agreed to answer some questions for us at the a recent training session.

Page 34: The Nomads vs Port Talbot Town Match Programme (25-08-2012)

34

Q 1: “Jamie, what’s it like to be back after a couple of months rest from playing?”

A: “It’s great to be back. Nice to have a break for a week or two, but I don’t know what to do with myself on a Saturday without football!”

Q 2: “How is the pre season training going for you and the other lads?”

A: “It’s going really well so far. We just can’t wait for the pre season friendly’s to start now! Jay Catton had us in quite early this year and is giving us training plans to do at home as well. So we are being given all the help we need and will have no excuses if we are not fit and ready for the start of the season.”

Q 3: “What do you think about Nomads first few fixtures in the Welsh Premier League?”

A: “I think it’s a great start to the season. If we want to compete in this league, we need to perform well against the best teams. Playing three of the top teams in our opening fixtures, means we have to be at the top of our game from day one. We have been used to winning every week for the last two years, so it will be a lot different being underdogs in many games this season. We have to be mentally strong and confident in our abilities.”

Q 4: “Finally Jamie, what are your personal hopes and ambitions for the coming season?”

A: “I just want to keep improving and try and make a difference to the team in every game. It’s easy to play well personally when you are playing in the best team in the league. This year I know I need to step up to a whole new level and in my opinion, consistency is the key. If I can perform to my best week in week out then I’m confident I will do well. I’m really looking forward to it.”

Welsh Premier Review

Bala Town and Newtown shared the spoils in an eight-goal thriller at Maes Tegid on the Welsh Premier’s opening night.

Bernard McNally’s shoestring Robins shocked their expensivelyassembled hosts by taking a three goal lead inside the first half hour. Luke Boundford and Craig Whitfield had the Reds two goals to the good inside nine minutes before skipper Shane Sutton hit a superb third from just inside the Bala half. But Conall Murtagh started the Lakesiders’ fightback and Ian Sheridan pulled another goal back just before the break. Sheridan levelled before strike partner Lee Hunt was red-carded and then completed a late hat-trick which appeared to have snatched all three points for the hosts.

But Newtown had other ideas and defender Andy Jones hit the eighth of the game in the final minute in a game which also saw three goals disallowed.

Aberystwyth manager Tomi Morgan’s return to Richmond Park was not a happy one as his former charges Carmarthen Town won 2-0. Jack Christopher opened the scoring on 67 minutes and a 68th-minute red card for home defender Matty Rees had no adverse effect on the Old Gold with sub Liam Thomas making the points safe on his debut with an 84th-minute goal.

Llanelli showed they may be more capable of surviving without seven-times Golden Boot winner Rhys Griffiths that Port Talbot, who signed the striker this summer then lost him to Plymouth Argyle. The Reds beat the Steelmen 2-1 at the GenQuip Stadium with former Talbot frontman Martin Rose seeing his shot stabbed over the line by another former Blue, Luke Bowen. Cortez Belle levelled from the penalty spot on 40 minutes, but a well-take goal from Craig Moses restored the visitors’ lead and the hosts’ hopes of a another comeback were dented by the dismissal of defender Paul Keddle for foul and abusive language to an assistant.
