ovember is associated with the message of Thanksgiving; a time to reflect and to be thankful. The amazing people who are the members of the North Palm

Beach Yacht Club certainly are on the top of my list. What a fabulous, fun-loving, kind and supportive group of people.

Thank you to the Board and the volunteers for the work you do to make our club great. Without your commitment, creativity, and high standards, we would not be the thriving

club that we are.

Staff Commodore Christine Snedaker went thru the minutes of several years Board of Governors meetings, and picked out all of the various committee’s that have been designated and then forgotten. We will be coming out with a list of them in the near future, and we will be asking for volunteers to join them.

I am pleased to announce the Nominating Committee’s choices for the 2016 Officers. Additional nominations will be accepted from the floor at both the October and November Dinner meetings, and we will vote for the 2016 Board at the November dinner meeting.

The winter uniform returns starting with the November dinner meeting. Weather permitting, the November dinner meeting will be preceded by a Sundown Ceremony, the last one for the year.

As a reminder, the winter uniform consists of: a dark blue blazer, pocket emblem, club tie, white belt, white pants/skirt, and white shoes.

SHIP’S WHEEL NOVEMBER 2015

The new membership applications may have slowed down but the Club activities have begun to pick up for the remainder of 2015. We are looking forward to a lot of big events still to come—Annual Club Picnic, Annual Pig Roast, Nick and Mary's low country boil, the Hoiday Meeting/Party and of

course the Commodore's Ball. I know the Rear Commodore has some big plans for the upcoming monthly dinner meetings and First Fridays for the last quarter of 2015. The Board of Governors has already started planning for 2016 and setting up Committees, getting sponsors for First Fridays and more. Please start thinking about what Committees you would like to participate in next year. We encourage members to get involved and be part of club events. Here are some of the areas we need your help!

Checking members in at the monthly dinner meetings

Sponsoring a First Friday or helping out at the event to set up or clean up.

Assisting in arranging Thirsty Thursdays

Assisting the Fleet Captain in putting together raft ups, week-end rendezvous, annual picnic

Taking Pictures So let me know which committee you would like to serve. There is a lot to do and we need everybody's involvement. Commodore Lucas announced in October, we will be returning to our Winter Uniform in November. The Winter Uniform consists of a dark blue blazer with a club pocket emblem, club tie, white pants/skirt, white belt, white shoes. Club uniforms are not mandatory but wouldn’t it be great to see our members in uniform at the November Sundown Flag Ceremony. If anyone has any questions regarding club uniforms, please feel free to email [email protected] or give me a call 561-702-4782. For your convenience, I have the following items on-hand: Ties (Men) $25, Ties (Women) $15, Blazer Emblem $22, Epaulets $23, Cap Emblems $31. As we are heading into the winter season and we are looking forward to many of our seasonal members returning! And, since we have added a lot of new members for 2015, please remember to wear your name tag to club events. If you've misplaced yours and would like me to order a new one, let me know.

SHIP’S WHEEL NOVEMBER 2015

On Saturday October 24th the Annual Picnic was held in the Sea Oats Pavilion at Carlin Park in Jupiter, Florida. The day’s event was well attended with 56 club members and guests enjoying the late summer temperatures and the light ocean breeze. (And the food). I would like

to express my appreciation to “volunteers” Chet & Susan

Fichander for picking up the food for the grill, and to Bob Kabula and Chet for cooking the hamburgers and hot dogs for everyone’s enjoyment. Also a big “THANK YOU” to Rear Commodore Wayne Jablonski and Donna for their organizing of and setting up for our Annual Picnic. Susan and I were away to a wedding until late in the week and without these “volunteers” this Club’s quite enjoyable day may have turned out somewhat disastrous. The rendezvous to the Pelican Yacht Club over Columbus Day weekend was a great getaway. The Friday evening dock

party did start late, well-after 5:00 pm. Those attending were enjoying their happy hour and didn’t seem to mind waiting for the working class boaters to arrive. Seven vessels made the trip to the Resort for the weekend with some members either driving up for the evening or staying in the Resort’s

rooms. Saturday’s happy hour and dinner in the Loft Restaurant had 30 club members attending with some coming up early in the day to enjoy the local shopping and Resort’s pool. Our next raft-up event will be at 1:00 pm on Saturday Novem-ber 21st, back to Juno Dunes Natural Area. For those that will be driving by car, there is parking on the west side of US1 about ½ mile north of Donald Ross. It is about a 15-minute walk to the picnic area on the intracoastal. If you would like to attend by boat and need a ride, please contact me and I will find a captain with space for you to ride along to the day’s event.

Hope to see you out on the water, Fleet Captain

Hey you boat owners, listen up.

So you put off the yearly hundred hour service yet again. The summer boating season crept up before you knew it and what the heck? Engine is running good, water stream is flowing but looks a little weaker. But that's alright, the alarm will go off if she overheats. "Summer is winding down I'll get it serviced before next season", you say to yourself. But guess what happens? Summer's here before you know it and your brother's down from the upper 47 and wants to go fishing. "Sure", you say excitedly, "let's go". Beautiful sunny day, ocean's flat, you're two miles offshore looking for the Dorado patch and the engine suddenly dies. What the heck? Crank crank crank. No sign of life. You put off joining Sea Tow too, and didn't get that extra hundred feet of anchor rode. Now you and your brother are on your way to Sebastian. Fortunately you have cell phone signal and call for a tow. Five hundred dollars later you're at the ramp. The shop calls to tell you that the engine overheated and it's toast. For $20,000 they can hang another 200 h.p. off the stern. "But the alarm never went off", you cry. "That's because your alarm horn doesn't work", replied the tech. This may sound like a wild far fetched tale, but I can tell you I've heard it more than once. Putting off a yearly $300.00, in most cases, hundred hour service that ends up costing thousands. There's a reason most engine makers recommend a yearly service. Also other potential problems can be caught early. Such as alarms not working, water in the fuel or in the lower unit oil. So boat owners, don't put off that yearly service. If you don't want to hassle with taking it to a shop, call a mobile mechanic such as myself. You'll get personalized service with a smile. And maybe a tall tale or two. TAX TIME IS COMING SOON!

It won’t be long until tax season arrives. There are many actions that you can take now to ease the burdens of tax time. Verify that your address is correct at all banks, brokerage houses, Social Security, any source of tax documents that will be mailed to you. Consult with both your financial advisor and tax accountant regarding any investments that are losing, and whether it would be beneficial to dispose of them now, or wait until a later year. Ascertain whether or not you have gains that you would want to offset by selling securities with losses. Confirm that, if it applies, you have received or will receive your required minimum distribution from retirement plans. Remember, the penalty for not taking the RMD is fifty percent! If you don’t have quite enough deductions to itemize, review with your tax accountant whether it would be advantageous to pay two years’ real estate taxes in one year – in other words, 2015 taxes in January, 2016 and 2016 taxes in November, 2016. While one year’s taxes may not result in sufficient itemized deductions, often two years’ taxes combined provide a better opportunity for tax savings by itemizing.

An early start can smooth the way when it is actually time to prepare your taxes!

Effective November 1, 2015, I will have a new office at 760 US Highway 1, Suite 206,

North Palm Beach, FL Please join us for an Open House on 11/19/15
