New York Bar and Grill welcomed us with open arms and special entertainment for Thirsty Thursday and who could forget our Caribbean Night monthly dinner meeting with the ‘Sweet Justice Band’ – if you missed it you missed a great party. In August we also had a Land & Sea event at the Brazilian docks on Palm Beach with Lunch at Café Boulud. April, we had a ‘Everything is coming up Roses’ First Friday at Westwood Gardens hosted by Bill Miller, Dotty LeVally and the Baker’s that party was followed by a Thirsty Thursday and food fest at Carrabbas. By May most of our snowbirds had flown the coop for the summer, but those who stayed were treated to Gumbo and Crawfish thanks to Al Adams and Denise Smith’s First Friday New Orleans Experience. Thirsty Thursday we braved the rain at the Waterway Café. In May we also had a Land & Sea rendezvous at the Marriott Beach Resort on Hutchinson Island and Karen Gotsch took her first Honor Flight Trip on Memorial Day. June’s First Friday brought us to Tom and Patty Collins beautiful intracoastal home, Thirsty Thursday we returned to Bonefish Grill – they love us and made sure we had plenty of food and drinks. July got a little confusing with our First Friday on Thirsty Thursday at Julie Fenix & Daniel Allari’s poolside Intracostal home – a little rain fell but then it cleared into a beautiful night. A Land & Sea event over the 4 th of July at Harborage/Loggerhead where they watched the fireworks display on the St. Lucie River. We ended July with a ‘ Sundown Ceremony at our Sandpiper’s Cove monthly dinner meeting.

NPBYC SHIP’S WHEEL DECEMBER 2014

Welcome aboard! to our 10 new membership’s since January. Adding to that will be Robert and Lynette Kabula who will be inducted at the November din-ner meeting. I will miss the induction of

the Kabula’s as Mary and I will be on our 11 day Panama Canal cruise. If all goes as planned, and they are approved by the Board of Directors, 2 more memberships will be recognized at the December dinner meeting. This should end the 2014 year. This time of year means we will be wearing our winter uniform with tie and blazers. If you are in need of a new tie, crest or hat band, please let me know The Nominating Committee for 2013 has placed my name in nomination for the office of Commodore. I am humbled by their confidence in me. The other members of the North Palm Beach Yacht Club who were also nominated for the other positions make up a talented and enthusiastic group. We all have many ideas for next year, and we will encourage Club members to bring your ideas to us as well. As you gather with family and friends this Thanksgiving remember that the best things in life are not things. Mary and I would like to wish everyone a very Happy Thanksgiving

Who is James the Plumber? "During my 30 year career, I observed a lot of poor quality plumbing workmanship. My exemplary train-ing through the plumbers union instilled in me to take pride in my workmanship. Because of that I am dedicated to always give the best quality plumbing service, if not for any other reason then I believe you deserve it."

Computer Corner—FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS…..

How do I email a picture? NOTE: These instructions pertain to images that you have saved onto your laptop or desktop. These instruc-tions do not pertain to emailing images from handheld devices. If you want to email a picture from our website, you must first save it. Keep in mind that images from the website have been reduced in size for quick browsing. If you want to email one of those, please contact me ([email protected]) and I will send you the original. Drag the mouse over the picture you want. Then do the following: 1. Right click on the mouse 2. A sub-menu will open (see below). Drag your mouse down so that you highlight ‘Send To.’ Click the mouse ONCE. Another sub-menu will appear. Drag the mouse down to ‘Mail Recipient.’ Double click. This screen or one very similar will appear: It is important to resize your photo before emailing it. The recommendation is ‘Medium.’ This will not only speed up sending the email for you, it will also speed up the receiving of the email for the recipient. If you leave the image at its original size, it might take as long as 5 minutes to send and to be received. You also risk the email getting bounced back to you because the size is larger than what is allowed by your Internet Service Provider or the recipient’s Internet Service Provider. If you select ‘Small’ or ‘Smaller,’ it will certainly speed up how fast the email is sent/received but it will also create an image that may be too small to use. Again, the recommended size is ‘Medium.’ If you want to email more than one picture, simply click on the first photo in your list of photos and then hold down the CTL button as you click on each of the additional pictures that you would like to email. Proceed to Step #1. I know the website can be viewed on my mobile device, but what do I need to download for this to happen? Nothing. When you enter www.npbyachtclub.org the website application automatically knows if it is being accessed by a personal computer, laptop, iPad, or mobile device and will display the appropriate version of the website.

About 40 members showed for food, music and fun at First Friday. Only in Florida can you have a poolside party in October. The

setting was great and also we had a full moon to howl at. The club thanks Diane Finch for accommodating us and we hope she will invite us again next year.

We followed right up with a Bowling night on "Thirsty Thursday". The $4 drinks were our pain killers while each of our groups played 3 games each. We have a lot of members that really know this game. Check out the pictures on this!

REAR COMMODORE — Rick Kendrick — [email protected]

We will be winding up the 2014 year with a big bang. "First Friday" will be the “low country boil” on December 5th, we really look forward to this each year and appreciate Nick and Mary for opening up their house to us. Don’t miss this!

2014 Thirsty Thursday ends up at Spoto’s on PGA Blvd. Specials will be available so stay turn and mark your calendar for December 11th.

We will end the year with Darrel Chambers providing live music for our final monthly Dinner Meeting in 2014. Great way to get into the Holiday Spirit, so be sure to mark your Calendars for December 15th for this Change of Watch, Festive Christmas Dinner and party.

The Commodore's Ball will be here before you know it so plan on it. January 31, 2015 at the Abacoa Country Club. You will need to contact Carol Kraus to reserve your spot. Her email is [email protected] and phone number is (816) 679-6670.

Finally, I will be putting together a committee to review and make suggestions to the board for making a change to our current location for the monthly dinner meetings. If I do not get any volunteers for this committee then I will assume we are pleased with the current location and we will continue having the monthly dinner meetings at the Sandpiper Cove Restaurant. You can contact me at 561 702 4782 or via email at [email protected] .

Jolly Old Saint Nick...the Sailor.

Every December we’re swamped with images of America’s greatest salesman – Santa Claus – hawking everything from fast food to automobiles. In the deluge of media hype, there are always a few stories reminding us that the idea of “Santa Claus” evolved from St. Nicholas, and one or two of those stories might go so far as to explain the real Nicholas was a kindly bishop of Myra (today known as Demre and located in modern-day Turkey). It seems a poor family of that town could not provide dowries for three daughters and, since the girls were unable to marry, they would have to be sold into slavery. Nicholas saved the day by riding past the house late at night and throwing three bags of gold coins through an open window – bags which, by a miracle, landed in shoes and stockings that had been left out to dry next to the fireplace. But how many people know that St. Nicholas is also the patron

of sailors and ships, offering safe voyage and protection from storms? Traditionally, German sailors who survived a shipwreck brought him a piece of sailcloth as an offering, and, in fact, much of the world knows St. Nicholas as “the sailors’ friend.”

Legend says that long ago a ship in the Mediterranean Sea was caught by a storm and forced into shallow waters where it became grounded. The sailors were unable to maneuver the vessel back into deeper water and called on Nicholas for aid. The Saint appeared among them and gave the sailors a helping hand, fastening the lines holding the mast and using a pole to pry the ship away from the threatening rocks. As soon as the boat was freed, the Saint vanished. Even today, Greek sailors wish each other luck by saying, “May St. Nicholas hold the tiller.” So after you’ve put up the last of the decorations, and you’re basting the turkey one final time while you watch the kids unwrapping gifts under the tree, give a thought to Saint Nicholas. May his hand be on the tiller of the ship carrying you and your family on your voyage through the New Year!

The NPBYC picnic on 10/25 at the Jupiter Beach Picnic Pavilion was a great success. This was the perfect location for a picnic with excellent accommodations, near by parking, a lot of room for lawn games, a Volley Ball Court, and access to the beach. We had plenty of hotdogs and hamburgers for the picnic along with all the great dishes brought

by our members. We ate, drank and played a few rounds of Bocce Ball but a Volley Ball game did not get enough participants to serve up a game. Everyone had a good time, this would be a great locations for our annual picnics going forward. On 11/15 my last raft-up event of the year took place with boaters docking at the West Palm Beach City Docks, shopping at the Green Market, and having lunch at Brad-ley's Restaurant all located close to the city docks. Many members drove to Bradley's, valet parking was available. 40 members attended, the food and weather was great, what a nice day we all had. When we were leaving for the day Scott Abel's boat was docked right in the middle of a wedding taking place on the docks. Everyone on Scott's boated stayed for the wedding but no one invited us to the reception afterwards, maybe we were not dressed appropriately. No boating events are scheduled for December due to the Holidays. I hope you all have a wonderful holiday season..

Five Easy Ways to Spot a Scam Phone Call A call last week from an alarmed client reminded me that the scam-mers are always relentlessly active. She had received a threatening telephone call from a person who attempted to extort payment for a phony income tax balance due. Following are five tell-tale warn-ing signs to tip you off if you get such a call. These callers claim to be with the IRS. The scammers often demand money to pay taxes. Some may try to con you by saying that you’re due a refund. The refund is a fake lure so you’ll give them your banking or other pri-vate financial information. These con artists can sound convincing when they call. They may even know a lot about you. They may alter the caller ID to make it look like the IRS is calling. They use fake names and bogus IRS badge numbers. If you don’t answer, they often leave an “urgent” callback request. It’s pretty easy to tell when a supposed IRS caller is a fake. Here are five things the scammers often do but the IRS will not do. Any one of these five things is a sign of a scam. The IRS will never:

1. Call you about taxes you owe without first mailing you an official notice. 2. Demand that you pay taxes without giving you the chance to question or appeal the amount they say you owe. 3. Require you to use a certain payment method for your taxes, such as a prepaid debit card. 4. Ask for credit or debit card numbers over the phone. 5. Threaten to bring in local police or other law-enforcement to have you arrested for.

If you get a phone call from someone claiming to be from the IRS and asking for money, here’s what to do:

If you know you owe taxes or think you might owe, call the IRS

at 800-829-1040 to talk about payment options. You also may be able to set up a payment plan online at IRS.gov.

If you know you don’t owe taxes or have no reason to believe that you do, report the incident to TIGTA at 1.800.366.4484 or at www.tigta.gov.

If phone scammers target you, also contact the Federal Trade Commission at FTC.gov. Use their “FTC Complaint Assistant” to report the scam. Please add "IRS Telephone Scam" to the com-ments of your complaint.

Remember, the IRS currently does not use unsolicited email, text messages or any social media to discuss your personal tax issues. For more information on reporting tax scams, go to www.irs.gov and type “scam” in the search box.

may your fears fade away,
