OVERVIEWThe Australian Not-For-Profit Sector

The Australian community sector - sometimes referred to as the not-for-profit (NFP) sector, nonprofit sector, third sector, or social sector -encompasses a broad range of social organisationsthat pursue a range of charitable purposes acrossour country. The missions of these organisations is to advance health, education, support, social welfare or religious intake. The broad range of entities include hospitals, education groups, sports clubs, community services, childcare services,environmental groups, family support, counselling and training agencies.

The most recent Australian Charities Report from the Australian Charities and Not-for-profits Commission has noted that there is approximately47,000 registered charities in Australia but up to 600,000 community sector organisations that are unincorporated. According to the Australian Bureau of Statistics, the sector employs over 1.3 million staff around Australia. In June 2018 there were12.6 million people employed in Australia, meaning that the not-for-profit sector makes up 10% of the total workforce.

Challenges NFP's facewhen hiring.As the sector grows, charities, foundations, associations and similar organisations willface more competition for qualified workers. Aside from the standard challenges of finding“good people”, charities and NFP’s encounter a number of other challenges including:

Lower compensation: With a war for good talent,the for-profit sector often has the financialadvantage of being able to offer heftycompensation, benefits and commissionpackages for good staff. Compensation within theNFP sector can often be up to 15% lower than thefor-profit sector, thus making it a challenge toattract good people.

Work is often not 9-to-5: On top of low pay,work can require weekends, nights, or extendedtravel. Beneficiaries of NFP support can oftenrequire on-call resources, and a busy fundraisingschedule can see many employees workinglong days.

Finding likeminded candidates can be difficult:Perhaps one of the biggest challenges is finding acandidate who is truly interested in the organisationscause and subsequently willing to stay through thetough and challenging times.

Missions can seem unattainable: Every NFP is aimingto address and change a large societal problem.While the overall mission of the organisation is positive,big achievements or wins are few and far between.Often with slow progress, staff can often lose motivationor become disenchanted. Alongside the long hoursand low compensation, burnout can be quite high.

Seek to connect with - and network with - candidates that passionately choose to be involved with the mission. Generally, the best talent stay when they love their position and the people they work with so hiring for passion and cultural fit is a key pillar.

Look for reasons in the candidate’s past history that evidence long term passion for your mission and the work itself. If they have shown extensive study, volunteering, education or professional upskilling outside of standard employment, then this is a good consideration.

Employees who align with the ultimate goal of an organisation are more likely to work harder for you.

• Make sure your mission statement is clear and the implementation of it is a focal point in the role you are advertising for.

• Include the mission statement in your job posting. Reiterate this statement and the purpose of the organization throughout the hiring process to weed out the candidates who may not be aligned.

Many candidates that apply for your role may have experience or be transitioning from the for-profit or commercial sector. These people can often be incredibly suitable for various management, fundraising or strategic roles within the business as they bring commercial knowledge and are often well networked within the grants or funding sector.

It’s important to make sure transitioning professionals understand everything that goes into being an employee of an NFP and are aware of some of the challenges including budgetary issues, legislative requirements, long hours and staff shortages. Ensure to properly verify why they are looking to join the NFP sector, and what they expect in return. If their experience, passion and knowledge of your organisations missions align –as well as the sacrifices they will need to make personally – then it’s worth considering them for the role.

The art of finding excellent NFP talent requires a recruitment strategy that is robust and well thought out. Aside from a standard job posting, recruiting in this sector requires a tailored approach with laser-point targeting to the right people.

Write a truly compelling job advertisementand description:Push the advantages that your organisation has over any for-profit organisation. Explain how amazing the team is, how inspiring it to work in the role, how incredible the work is andwhat the great conquests this person can achieve when in this role.

Be a proactive recruiter:Build a multi-faceted approach to your talent attraction strategy by posting ads, but also using the best tools and doing some networking. Be strategic and always make sure the people you reach out to network with are the true dream candidate match in title, experience, and industry. Go after the same title, experience level and the industry you are recruiting for.

Sell the value of the career opportunity:A lot of hiring good candidates is showcasing or “selling” the value of the opportunity. Candidates will generally either move for a better environment, team, compensation package or career growth – however, the NFP sector can also showcase the value of working towards a cause inclusive of emotional and psychological benefits. Get creative, make it compelling and cultivate excitement.

You will be guided to the screen below where you can enter in your registration details or sign in with Linkedin. How to invite your team to use NFP Careers

Many NFP’s, especially larger recruitment teams, have multiple individuals involved in the hiring process. Each of these individuals may need access to check up on job postings, review applications and collaborate on the hiring process.

To add some of your team members to your account, hit “Team Admin” under the top right navigation bar in your employer dashboard. On this page you will be able to send invitations to team members to allow them access to your job portals. Hit “Invite a Team Member” to send them an invitation and set them a role in the recruitment process, either a Standard User or an Admin User.
