involvement. I truly believe, and research supports the notion that increased parental involvement has a direct correlation with the overall success of a school. This is why I am encouraging you to join our PTA.

Why Join? As a member of the Nottoway County Public Schools PTA, you will join a community of parents that encourages student achievement and helps enrich the learning environment. I believe in building partnerships be- tween our families and our schools. If you have not joined, I would like to en-courage you to become a member. Here are some more reasons why you should join: 1. Student Academic Improvement: The PTA allows you another opportunity to be involved in your child's education. Every study ever conducted on the relationship between student performance and parent involvement shows that when parents are involved in their child’s education, student academic performance improves.2. Direct Impact to Schools: Your membership in the PTA has a direct impact on our children and the quality of our school division. PTAs have the ability to make a school division a better place for children to learn. Our own PTA can address the needs of our schools and school division. Call your child’s principal to get involved today!

Educationally yours, Dr. Rodney L. Berry

Mission Statement: Nottoway County Public Schools aspires to provide opportunities for students to enjoy life, contribute to others’ well being, and become responsible, productive citizens in a global community.

VOLUME II, ISSUE I SEPTEMBER 2017

Parents As Partners Guidelines For Parent Child Relationships 1. Try to set a side time on a regular basis to do something fun with

your child. 2. Try to see a situation the way your children do. Listen carefully to

them. Try to form a mental picture of how it would look to them.

3. Be a good listener: Use good eye contact. Physically get down to the level of smaller children. Don’t interrupt. Ask open ended questions rather than questions that can be answered with a yes or no. Repeat back to them what you heard.

What’s Happening in the Classroom

Blackstone Primary School participated in "The Crunch Heard 'Round the Commonwealth" on Wednesday, October 4, 2017 at 10:00 a.m.  We were making noise for Virginia Farm to School month.  At 10 am students simultaneously took a bite out of a locally grown apple.  Apples were provided to students by the cafeteria.  VDOE in collaboration with the Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services supported this first annual event.  The children enjoyed participating!

We had a Rootin' Tootin' Reading Week in BPS Library. Our Book Fair theme was Saddle Up and Read! Every student that purchased a book had their picture taken at the photo booth. We also celebrated National Farm-to-School Month by participating in the First Annual Crunch Heard 'Round the Commonwealth!

BPS PE. STEM lesson: My class (Ms. M. McCarthy) starts with the simple challenge of stacking cups to the tallest possible height.  Student groups must work together to create the tallest stack of cups.  Although this sounds easy, it isn't for my older students I add different challenges to the build.  This allows amazing things to happen!!
