Supporting digital

literacy at New City Supporting schools to implement this year’s new

computing curriculum

The Education ICT curriculum team has been supporting schools

with the implementation of the new computing curriculum. New

City produced a magazine that went to professional printers and

was then sold by the editorial team. The club was set up and run by

Fern Bamford (ICT Co-ordinator) and Natasha Campbell (NPW)

with pupils from across the school producing work. The editorial

team, selected from year 5 and 6 pupils, then edited the content

and prepared articles for print. In addition to further developing

literacy skills and writing for an audience, pupils used technology

to work on the layout of the magazine (Graphical design) and

learnt how to use MS Publisher.

The magazine contains:

interviews with paralympians, authors, the school cook and

musicians,

articles about the school i.e. school visits, trips, sporting

events and clubs,

articles of interest i.e. the „we are writers‟ project from KS1,

origami, recipes, puzzles and reviews,

pictures from the Foundation Stage.

Digital literacy and presenting information to a wider audience for

a purpose is a key part to the new computing curriculum and can

be used to enforce learning across the curriculum. If literacy is

going to be a part of your school improvement plan and you would

The Newham London Waterfront Festival

20 September 2014

This year the Waterfront Festival, at Royal Victoria

Dock returns with plenty more free family fun

including: live music stage, water based activities

including free boat rides, free children‟s activities and

entertainment spectacular fireworks display - 7.45pm.

A student from St Angela's and St Bona-

venture's Sixth Form Centre is the only

Comprehensive School in the whole of

East London to be awarded highly

commended in an essay competition

organised by the Royal Economist

Society.

There were over 1,600 entries from all

over the globe for the Young

Economist of the Year competition and

former St Bonaventure's student Adrian

Polius, who's 17, made it onto the

highly commended list.

Only 44 students from around the world

made it onto the list.

Lots of Grammar, Independent and

Boarding Schools such as Eton and

Dulwich made it onto the Final 18 list.

Commended students from schools in

Dubai and Singapore made it onto the

list along with St Bonaventure's.

Jim Ward, who is Adrian's Business

and Economics teacher said: "I

received an email from Adrian over the

weekend and he is over the moon to

have his essay recognised. He had some

disasters along the way. His laptop

broke for a week which left him

wondering if he would ever finish his

essay. Luckily he submitted it in time

and now his entry has won a coveted

highly commended tag which should

boost his confidence no end."

Adrian added: " When I saw my name

on the top of the list and I saw the

other establishments named I felt very

proud. Schools across the World, mostly

Independent Schools sent in entries and

some of the winners come from very

privileged areas. To be the only student

in Newham to have their essay

recognised made me feel very honoured.

The only other school in East London to

have their essay recognised by one of

their students was the Independent

Chigwell School. I couldn't wait to tell

Mr Ward my good news. I feel

fantastic.
