Wisconsin Veterans Home at King

Hello and Happy October Everyone!

I am sure you are all noticing some of the same things I am in this month of October; the leaves of trees are changing color and starting to fall, people are wearing jackets and other cooler weather attire, pumpkins are being sold everywhere, and football is in full swing. As the tenth month of the year, October leads to major end-of-year holidays in November and December including Veterans Day. Veterans Day is a United States legal holiday dedicated to American veterans of all wars.

In 1918, on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month, an armistice, or temporary cessation of hostilities, was declared between the Allied nations and Germany in World War I, then known as “the Great War.” Commemorated in many countries as Armistice Day the following year, November 11th became a federal holiday in the United States in 1938. In the aftermath of World War II and the Korean War, Armistice Day became legally known as Veterans Day. Veterans Day coincides with similar holidays, including Armistice Day and Remembrance Day, celebrated in other countries to mark the anniversary of the end of World War I. November 11 is a day set aside to honor those who have served their country.

And how fortunate that I and all the employees at King and all the wonderful volunteers, families, loved ones, veteran service groups and others who are able to honor those who served on a daily basis; to serve those who served. It is a privilege and it is indeed humbling. May we all as people, families, and communities, come together and continue to honor those who served. Let us also remember and learn from history and move forward united. As my Grandmother Ethel used to tell me when I was a young wife and mother, “Be good and kind to each other.” I have tried to instill this simple message into everyday life with others. There is so much conflict in the world, let us change this and go forth with goodness and kindness toward each other.

The Volunteer Banquet took place in Quadrangle Park at the WVH-King on September 13. The theme was “You Are Treasured.” There was entertainment, meal catered by Ambrosia’s, songs by the King Singers and some of the volunteers played Volunteer Feud. The volunteers at King donated a total of $848,376.16 in time this past year.

Recognizing Wisconsin Veterans Home at King Volunteer

Meet Tom Neilitz

A Volunteer’s Personal ExperienceI have been a volunteer at King for several years, and every day I come here I am constantly being thanked by the staff for doing what I’m doing. It is long overdue that I now pay tribute to all the employees here. While my contact is mostly with people in activities and the nursing staff, I am also very observant of the many other employees who play an important role in making sure that the members are comfortable and are having their needs met.

At the top of my list is the genuine compassion and care you give. I see it in the kind words, the gentle touch and caring look to a member who is having a bad day; I see it when you deal with difficult people in difficult situations; I see it when a member has an accident and needs to be cleaned up, and then just after cleaning up, it happens again. I see this genuine compassion and care every time I come here. In spite of the fact that you all have bad days from time to time and that you cannot avoid carrying your family, financial and personal concerns with you to work, for the most part you are able to set this aside and go about attending to the members. This is not an easy thing to do! From my own personal experience, I know it is not humanly possible to do this every day, but I know you do it most of the time, which is very apparent to me.

I want you to know that you make a tremendous difference in the lives of the members you care for, and not just to the members, but to the families that entrust them to you. Because of you, they sense that they really matter, that they count for something, that they are special persons.

I want you people who care for the members directly or indirectly in support services to them, to know that you make a qualitative difference in the lives of the people you serve here at King. So, as a volunteer, I want you to know that you are special people, that you really matter, and in my view are the heart and soul of the Home. I want to say thank you for everything you are and for everything you do!

Bill Fahrenkrug

Tom Neilitz has been volunteering within the woodshop and wood crafting areas. Before moving to the Waupaca area, he was a teacher, and he brings those skills

to his work here at King. He took up the hobby of woodworking following his retirement and he certainly has a talent which is very apparent from his projects for members. He is constantly coming up with new project ideas for members of all skill levels. He encourages everyone to try a variety of projects and to put their own finishing touch on them. One thing is certain, we could not do everything in the wood crafting classes that is being done today without Tom’s help!

WVH-King held the 2nd annual Penny War in September to support the Wau-King Together for Dementia Awareness Walk. The Penny War encompasses all staff on campus. Central Services raised the most money and was presented the traveling trophy for the 2017 Penny War. The facility as a whole raised $804.06! The proceeds went to the Waupaca County Caregiver Coalition. Thank you to all those who helped and participated.

The 2nd annual Wau-King Together for Dementia Awareness event was held at the WVH-King Quadrangle Park. Thank you to all of the sponsors, donors, and everyone who helped in any way to make this event possible and successful!

It was a colorful Saturday, July 1, 2017, as I was driving from the Olson Hall at WVH-King going to Waupaca. I was greeted by 277 members at the King Run Support Group, on their motorcycles. The group drove in procession to the Central Wisconsin Veterans Memorial Cemetery, then came back to the Veterans Home and parked their motorcycles along the side roads. I could not believe my eyes. I heard a voice in my heart say, “Thank you to all of our heroes. May your souls rest in peace.” Thank you for this gentle reminder.

The experience of this day is still vivid in my mind. I remember sharing about the King Run Support Group during Sunday Catholic services. Some of the members, who were involved in this event, were delighted to talk about it. Unfortunately, other members did not experience the King Run Support Group, either because they forgot to go outside or were not able to go outside.

The Role of Rituals in People’s Lives

Rituals give closure to the past, and they also provide a more formalized way of adding focus on the future. They play an important role in society. Rituals remind us of what is important and provide a sense of stability and continuity in our lives. You can also use rituals to work more effectively and stay focused on your goals. Evelyn and James Whitehead in their book, “Transforming our Painful Emotions,” point out that compassion is the ability to enter into the passion of another person. “Ordinarily, we think of compassion as commiseration, feeling the suffering of another person. But compassion has a more expansive meaning: entering into all the “passions” of another - both delight and sorrow, joy and anger. By the bridge of imagination we cross over into another world

of feeling. Like empathy, compassion is an uncanny capacity to participate in another’s inner world, without being engulfed by or fused with that person.”

Matthew 14: 14-21 Jesus feeds 5000 with five loaves of bread and two fish.

Jesus’ ritual of the feeding of the five thousand people brought joy and peace to the crowd. There is abundance to gratitude. We hear that our Lord Jesus Christ took five loaves of bread and two fish, and gave thanks. Miracles begin in generosity and love. Thus, feeding the hungry is both an act of compassion and a demonstration of the presence of God’s kingdom.

Throughout the centuries, Christians have followed the lead of Jesus in seeking to feed people, especially those with limited access to food. Increasingly, we are striving to help the poor, not only by feeding them, but also by helping them to develop the means to feed themselves.

While this miracle shows us the compassion Jesus had for people and the power He had to provide what people needed, there is a symbolic statement in this miracle that the people clearly understood or maybe misunderstood. So the miracle of the loaves and fishes does show us the power of God to care for and provide for his people, and it shows us that Jesus can open that treasury of manna and perform another miracle of bread which the prophets proclaimed, but by dismissing the crowds Jesus is also saying that He did not come to be a political leader and set up an earthly kingdom.

My Gratitude

I would like to take this opportunity to extend my sincere gratitude to the King Run Support Group. Thank you for your material and ritual support and for the substantial gift of money for the members at King. Thank you for the healing rituals you bring to the Veterans Home at

King members. Your presence brings joy and peace to them. Please join me in thanking the King Run Support Group for their love and time they give to our members and spouses. What return to God shall we make for all blessings we receive here at the Veterans Home at King.

Roy Kardoskee, a member on Legends on the Lake I likes to watch the boat traffic from the courtyard. He especially likes the Chief Waupaca paddle boat and would make comments like, “Some day I am going to ride on that boat. Before I die I want to ride on that boat.”

On September 11, which turned out to be a beautiful sunny day Roy got his wish. With the help of many staff from Ainsworth, Marden and the Clear Water Harbor, we were able to take several members from Ainsworth Hall for a cruise around the Chain O’Lakes on the Chief Waupaca paddlewheel boat. The staff kept this event a surprise and the smile on Roy’s face when he saw the boat and was told he was going for a ride was priceless! He got to wear the captain’s hat and drive the boat. It was an amazing afternoon.

Last Lessons of Summer by Margaret Maron Follow Amy Steadman into the suffocating heat of a southern August. Amy, heir to a merchandising and publishing empire, has come to clean out the house of her murdered grandmother. It was in this same house that Amy’s own mother had committed suicide when Amy was only 3. However, many secrets surround that death. Here, in this tobacco rich land, Amy meets relatives she never knew she had, and develops an unexpected emotional connection with the state investigator who is looking into the grandmother’s murder. They soon discover there may be a murderous force in Amy’s own family.

Beloved Enemy by Eric Van Lustbader Shortly after meeting with Jack McClure, Secretary of Homeland Security Dennis Paull is found shot dead! The President, concerned that Jack might be responsible for the murder, puts the top officials in the CIA and FBI on Jack’s trail. Jack, still devastated over his friend’s death, goes on the run. Someone in the intelligence community has gone rogue and is reporting to the most cruel, aggressive terrorist known – “The Syrian.” Jack and Dennis had discussed this issue and Jack’s mission is to secure the name of the mole. Ultimately, Jack will have to confront The Syrian. This also means he will have to confront The Syrian’s lover, Annika Dementieva, the woman Jack once loved and lost. Not a pleasant thought – to face your own beloved enemy…..

Killing the Rising Sun by Bill O’Reilly & Martin Dugard In autumn of 1944, WWII is nearly over in Europe, but is escalating in the Pacific. Emperor Hirohito of Japan is unwilling to surrender despite a massive and mounting death toll. The Japanese army follows the samurai code of Bushido, stipulating that surrender is a form of dishonor. From the bloody battles on Peleliu and Iwo Jima, and the embattled Philippines, this book will show you in depth the war in the Pacific. And when Dr. Oppenheimer develops the atomic bomb in Los Alamos, New Mexico, President Harry Truman is faced with the decision of using the bomb or not.

The Best Laid Plans by Sidney Sheldon This is the story of beautiful and ambitious Leslie Stewart and of Oliver Russell, handsome governor of a small southern state. You will be taken “inside two of America’s most powerful and ruthless institutions: the world of politics with its scandals, corruptions, and cover-ups; and that of newspaper publishing where it is not unusual to use the power of the press to destroy lives – or bring down heads of state – in pursuit of a story or to settle a score.”

Mother’s Day by Patricia MacDonald Greg and Karen Newhall have lived in serene and quiet Bayland, Massachusetts all of their lives. They knew it would be the perfect place to raise their adopted daughter Jenny. But then, the remains of a young girl are found in the nature preserve and the entire town is put on edge. Karen becomes frustrated because her newly adolescent daughter rebels at Karen’s attempts to “keep her safe.” Another shock occurs when Jenny’s birth mother, Linda Emery, shows up on their doorstep. Greg and Karen are both outraged by this, but young Jenny welcomes Linda with open arms. Only days later, Linda Emery is found dead, viciously murdered. Maybe Bayland is not the ideal spot after all?

One Summer by David Baldacci Jack is terminally ill, and spends what he assumes are his last days preparing to say goodbye to his wife Lizzie and their 3 children. Then the unthinkable happens. Lizzie is killed in a car accident. With no one able to care for them, the children are separated from one another and sent to live with family members all over the country. Miraculously, Jack begins to recover and rises from what should have been his death bed. He reunites with all 3 children at Lizzie’s childhood home on the oceanfront in South Carolina. There, over one unforgettable summer, the family learns how to grow back together and cope with Lizzie’s loss.

Festive in Death by J. D. Robb Lt. Eve Dallas is trying to prepare for a huge Christmas party at her home with her billionaire husband, and is trying not to show her frustration at preparing for 256 guests! Also on her mind is solving the murder of personal trainer Trey Ziegler. Trey had been found with a knife in his well-toned chest, and the list of possible suspects is quite long. At the top of the list of suspects is Trey’s vengeful ex-girlfriend, but she is just one of many women who’d been loved and left by the narcissistic gym rat.

A few lucky members saw the play “Wicked” and they had a

wonderful time.

On Sunday September 3, members Lois Rose, Darlene Schmidt, and Ramona Raught, from Stordock Hall enjoyed a trip to the Preforming Arts Center in Appleton. This trip was sponsored by donations for Stordock Hall Activities. The members got to see the play Wicked and spend time in more of a small group atmosphere. This was a once in a lifetime trip for these members. One member was so happy she framed her picture from the performance and has it hanging in her room to show visitors. This was an exciting trip for Lois as she has a background in preforming arts.

Your Thoughts

Fall is a time of beautiful colors. It is a time of harvest.

Of past thoughts. To reap what you have sowed. The geese are heading south.

The squirrel is putting food away for winter. The deer are getting ready to mate.

To put the summer toys away. The cold and snow is coming.

But it too can be enjoyed. There are sleds, snowballs, and fun.

Then spring won’t be far off. When all of nature is renewed.

Thus is the cycle of life.Spring, summer, fall, and winter.
