The Iliad is not only the longest and most ambitious book I’ve adapted; I believe it is also the most important.

I took my time getting around to adapting it, because I knew it would be a whole different level of challenge from anything I’d done before, even The Odyssey. The Iliad is not only huge, but also extremely dense, packed with history, mythology, long lists of similar-sounding character names, sprawling battle scenes filled with carnage, and much more.

Many readers (myself included) come away from their first experience of The Iliad with little more than a vague impression of endless fighting and dying, and of so-called “heroes” like Achilles and Agamemnon acting like sulky babies — but there’s much more to it than that. It is a timeless story about the social and psychological forces that drive individuals and societies into conflict. At the same time, it is an incredibly rich, detailed look at life in the Bronze Age, over three thousand years ago. The more you read it, the better you can understand the context and social dynamics of the characters and the cultures who fought to rule the Mediterranean and shaped the future in their image. The Iliad shows us the roots of Western civilization.

I’ve used all the tools of the comics medium to clarify the story and make it even more accessible for the modern reader. The gods are identified by the use of ethereal tints and colored outlines, while each army has an identifying color scheme and each named character has a distinctive shield and helmet design and a stylized initial on their breastplate. I switched between overviews and individual clashes within each battle to clarify the flow of the action, and I carefully balanced the panel layout of each fight and the overall pacing of each scene to keep the story driving forward. I’m proud of the result, and I think it will give readers of all ages a more enjoyable and rewarding introduction to The Iliad than they might have with the text alone. I hope this will allow more people to enjoy both The Odyssey and The Iliad, to understand these monumental works and all they have to teach us about our history and ourselves.

praise for The Odyssey

other graphic novels by Gareth Hinds

“Does genuine justice to Homer’s epic poem. . . . THRILLING.” — The Wall Street Journal

★ “HOLDS NOTHING BACK and is proudly, grittily realistic rather than cheerfully cartoonish. . . . Big, bold, beautiful.” — Kirkus Reviews (starred review)

★ “The SUMPTUOUS ART, produced with grain, texture, and hue, evokes a time long past while detailing every line and drop of sweat on Odysseus’s face and conveying the sheer grandeur of seeing a god rise out of the ocean. . . . A grand example of Hinds’s ability to combine historical adventure with human understanding.” — Booklist (starred review)

★ “With this graphic-novel interpretation, Hinds will hook some of those holdouts who have thus far resisted The Odyssey’s lure. . . . Outstanding individuation of characters . . . [and] LOVINGLY DEVELOPED flow between frames . . . make the work accessible.” — Bulletin of the Center for Children’s Books (starred review)

“The adaptation is most IMPRESSIVE in its ability to convey the despair, anguish, and joy of the characters in a sudden, striking way that text alone can’t, pulling these familiar figures out from a thousands-year-old story and presenting the reader with human faces. . . . Hinds has created a work that both honors the epic’s long tradition and helps readers see these characters in a new light.” — Publishers Weekly

“Hinds’s BEAUTIFUL WATERCOLORS SKILLFULLY CAPTURE the rosy-fingered dawn, the wine-dark sea, the land of the dead, and many other settings and characters that will inspire readers. . . . A welcome addition for fans of Homer’s original work and for newcomers to this classic story.” — School Library Journal

“A SPECTACULAR graphic novel.” — Buffalo News

“This is no mere comics adaptation of an ancient classic. Through his intricately illustrated panels, Gareth Hinds brings us

The Iliad ’s depth, brutality, and power. A Herculean effort worthy of the original.”

— Gene Luen Yang, Michael L. Printz Award winner for American Born Chinese

“With his graphic novel retelling of The Iliad, Gareth Hinds has created a work of such scope and power that it boggles my mind. It truly lives up to the — dare I say it — epic scale of the original poem.”

— George O’Connor, author of the New York Times best-selling Olympians series
