THE ÖNSKEDRÖM COLLECTION WITH OLLE EKSELL APRIL 2015

This new collection is the result of a dream collaboration with one of Sweden’s most prominent graphic designers - Olle Eksell (1918-2007). He designed an iconic logo for a famous Swedish brand of cacao in 1956, drew hundreds of book covers, posters and fabric patterns, and wrote books on design. We feel proud to be able to bring his playful spirit and charming illustrations on products that many people use every day.The ÖNSKEDRÖM collection is mainly about three different motifs by Olle Eksell, each with a sweet story behind. His illustrations appear on a range of products from small art cards, coasters, trays and mugs to larger rugs, bedlinen, metre fabric and posters.

Olle Eksell - of course! In this book you’ll get to know Olle’s, world and all the aspects of Olle. Be inspired by chapters on Olle Eksell the artist, the illustrator, the author and the designer. Get to know more about Olle’s delicious and sometimes quirky motifs - both known and unknown treasures - and enjoy documentary pictures and stories from his life with Ruthel Eksell. Written by David Castenfors and designed by Henrik Nygren.

Olle Eksell’s positive attitude to life is unmistakable in his work. Everything he produced radiates a sense of joy, a strong human presence, genuine warmth and subtle humour. A shock for the brain. A thought for the heart. Olle played with design.

Why does IKEA love Olle so much? Probably because of all the things we have in common. Like Olle, we believe that intuition and play are the most important prerequisites that enable the designer to fulfil his/her role as a creator. Design manager, Marcus Engman highlights more similarities: “Olle wanted to reach many with everything he did. Just like we do too. He was also convinced that good design could change the world. Such a positive, ingenious and happy rebel spirit is also something we at IKEA feel deeply connected to.”

Olle Eksell - the illustrator. “Olle Eksell could not draw people. He found that he could not make them lifelike. But when he drew birds, he suddenly managed to capture the characters of people. Birds popped up in Olle’s illustrations for the first time in the late 1950’s and they have since accompanied him throughout his entire career. From book covers, magazines and advertising material to birthday greetings, annual reports and even sculptures. All executed in his unmistakable style: humorous, ingenious and elegant with true human warmth. The paper ignites the colourOlle Eksell - the graphic designer. “In the early 1990s, Olle was asked to design a brochure for a Swedish paper mill. The mill was about to start making a brand new cheap paper with high-quality print reproduction. The idea was summed up with the words ‘The paper ignites the colour’.” From the book, Olle Eksell - of course! For almost 15 years these corporate brand designs of matches have been gathering dust in a drawer, until now. We hope the joy in his motif will put smiles on everyone’s faces - young and old.

Edward and the horseOlle Eksell - the storyteller. “In the 1950’s, Olle’s most creative period, he wrote and illustrated five children’s books alongside his bread-and-butter job. In 1961 Olle created his masterpiece among children’s books, Edward and the Horse, together with Ann Rand. In this wonderful book we meet the little city boy Edward who loves horses and how this leads him to take matters into his own hands.” From the book, Olle Eksell - of course! “Olle Eksell was incredibly productive. As soon as he had a minute to spare he would sit at his desk in his cupboard-office (squeezed into less than six square metres for floor space!) and come up with his own inventive little projects.
