Greetings Calafia! We would like to start by thanking

our new Duke and Duchess, ourvery own Mansur andElidih, for their stead-fast guidance anddedication to ourKingdom andBarony. Thankyou for all thework, time, and attentionduring yourreign. We wouldalso like to thankall of the Calafianswho took the time totravel to far-flung Winter-mist for Coronation and Queen’sChampion. The steward recorded atleast 60 Calafians in attendance…equaled only by Wintermist itself! All of you made a rather warm weekend wonderful with your presence.

June also saw the final step in our new process for selecting an incoming Seneschal. I want to thank THL Seraphina and Baron Tristan for their willingness to step up to the job. Also, we would really like to thank everyone who wrote comments in and who cast ballots in the poll. Without your input, we would be making a blind choice. Know that your comments and feedback were carefully read and considered in making this choice, and that we are always open for ongoing feedback in the coming weeks and months. Please give Seraphinaall of your support and patience as she learns this difficult job.

July is a fairly quiet month for us in Calafia… except of course for that small event called Comic-Con. Every year, this demo showcases the SCA to thousands of people from all over the world. If you are participating in the Demo or simply going to Comic-Con as your modern self, I would ask to stop

by the booth or the demo and show your support. The more people answering questions

and showing off all of the good thingsthe SCA is about, the better.

And if you are not atten-ding the Convention, I

would encouragethe populace to

show their support to Lyondemere,

who has theirAnniversary on

the same week-end. Also in July

is DreiburgenSummer Arts and

Festival of the Rose forHer Majesty Sighidr.

August, in contrast, will be a busy month for us. We start with our Annual Arts in the Park demo, in conjunction with Iron Brigade practice, at Allied Gardens. At this event, all of Calafia's guilds and artisans are invited to display their Arts and all fighters are invited to show their martial prowess on the field. This is an important Demo being both on the heels of Comic-Con and in light of the emphasis on the Arts. Please attend and help out if you can. This successful event has been a wonderful recruiting tool for us but it does not happen without the populace there to support it. Tanwyour Anniversary and Leodamus of Thebes will be in August as well and we look forward to seeing everyone at those events.

In service,

Guy Rand and Muirrenn3

From the ChatelaineThe Chatelaine is here as your first stop to get your

questions answered. If you are new to the SCA and have questions, please don’t hesitate to contact the Chatelaine. I’m no stranger to what it was like to walk into this organization with an overwhelming desire to become involved in all of the wonderful things the SCA has to offer, and at the same time having no idea about where to get started.

Want to know where to go to learn a particular skill or art form? We have guilds for that! Interested in learning archery or one of the fighting disciplines? I can point you in the right direction! If I don’t know the answer to your question, I will find someone who does. And if you need a place to sit and watch all of the action at the next Baronial event, feel free to make yourself at home in the Arts and Sciences/Newcomer’s pavilion. Everyone is welcome! We also have loaner garb available for you to borrow so you have something to wear at any of our events.

If you have any questions, please email me

at [email protected].

BREAD FROM BIRKA1

• ¼ cup dried split peas• 2½ cups coarsely-ground barley flour• 1 cup water (plus additional for cooking peas)

Soak the peas in a half-cup of cold water overnight (at least 12 hours). Drain, then bring to a boil in a saucepanwith a half-cup of fresh water. Simmer untilpeas are soft, adding more water if neces-sary. Drain any remaining water into aseparate bowl and reserve. Mashpeas until “porridgey,” adding re-served boiling liquid if necessary;you should end up with ~1/2 cupof pease porridge.

In a mixing bowl, mix flour, one cupwater, and ¼ cup porridge; work the doughwith your hands until it is smooth and pliant (dough will be a bit sticky!). Divide the dough into eight to ten pieces and roll each piece into a ball. Spread a bit of barley flour on a table or bread board, then flatten or roll each dough ball to a thickness of about ¼” (can be a bit thicker if desired).

Fry each ball on a dry griddle over medium-high heat until lightly browned on each side. Serve warm.

SWEET BEANCAKES2

• 1 15-oz can prepared fava beans• ¼ cup stone-ground wheat flour• ½ cup milk• 2 Tbsp honey• 1 Tbsp each soft butter & linseeds

Drain and rinse the fava beans, then remove their tough outer shells. Chop the shelled beans finely; this should yield about one cup of chopped beans. Put beans and flour into a mixing bowl; stir in the milk and to make a paste. Add honey and linseeds and stir to combine, The resulting batter should be runny enough to drop off of a spoon like a thick pancake batter – if necessary, add milk a few drops at a time until the proper consistency is achieved.

Lightly grease a frying pan (butter or lard works well) and heat over medium-high heat; when the fat begins to sizzle

and smoke a bit, drop batter by generous tablespoonsful into the pan. Cook as a pancake, turning often to avoid scorching, until browned on both sides. Serve hot or cool.

CYSE SYFLING (CHEESE SPREAD)3

• 8 oz plain cottage cheese• 8 oz softened cream cheese• 1 Tbsp apple cider vinegar• 1 tsp rose water• ½ tsp salt• ¼ tsp ground black pepper

In a mixing bowl, cream the two cheeses until smooth. Add the re-

maining ingredients and mix ‘tilblended. Spoon into container with a

lid, seal airtight, and chill for at least one hour (but overnight is better).

HONEYED HAZELNUT CAKE4

• 2½ cups chopped hazelnuts• 1½ cups chopped dried apple• 1 cup honey• 6 eggs

Heat oven to 350°F. Mix nuts, apples, and honey in a mixing bowl. Beat eggs in a separate container, then add to the nut mixture and stir ‘til combined.

Line a rimmed cookie sheet with parchment paper. Pour batter into cookie sheet and spread evenly to edges of sheet. Bake in heated oven 15-17 minutes. Remove and set on a rack until cool. Once completely cooled, use edges of parchment to lift the entire cake out of the pan onto a cutting board (do this quickly; the cake will still be quite flexible). Cut into bars (2” x 2” works well) and serve!

June’s meeting of the Viking Guild featured a lesson in how to “Eat like a Viking” – complete with Viking-age (“VA”) treats to enjoy during the presentation: two different protein-rich pan breads, a delicious Anglo-Saxon cheese spread, plus a big batch of little honeyed hazelnut cakes.

The breads were quite typical of everyday food of the Vikings: they were based on the kind of pulses grown on VA farms mixed with stone-ground grain. The cheese spread was inspired by Anglo-Saxon cuisine, where bread was commonly served with some sort of spread, either butter or soft cheese. And the hazelnut cakes? Well, they’re a bit fanciful – though made with VA-appropriate ingredients and methods, “dessert” as such was unknown to the Vikings… and it’s doubtful so much honey would have been squandered on sweets when it could have been better used for mead!

18 June 2015Commentary and AnnouncementsCommentary from the Baron and Baroness:

This is an important council; Baron Guy Rand is glad to see a good turnout. At Coronation and QC we were the biggest outside barony to show up - we tied with the hosting group. Gyldenholt Anniversary is coming up in two weeks, and in July Lyondomere Anniversary is up against Comic Con. Those who aren’t going to Comic Con are urged to check out Lyondemere Anniversary.

We have three local events in August: Arts in the Park on August 2, Tanwayour Anniversary on August 8, and Leodamus of Thebes on August 22.

Twelve people showed up at the Council meeting at Potrero War. Thank you for the volunteer time at Potrero despite it being wet and cold - it was appreciated!

Commentary from the Seneschal:

VERY IMPORTANT meeting today. No trial by combat. This is not an easy job, and thank you to those offering to step up. We’ll do a polling for Seneschal first before we do reports. Then new business.

Announcements from Peers and Kingdom Officers:

Festival of the Rose is coming up the weekend after Lyondemere Anniversary.

Baronial Officers ReportsArchery ( Lady Adelwyn Atewattere):

There was an excellent turnout for archery events at Potrero War – approximately 160 archers! The winner of the Potrero Championship Shoot was Baron PaganusGrimlove; the Youth Royal Champion was Sarah Hardick. Please refer to the Archery quarterly report for additional information about archery at Potrero.

We attended three practices in June; there were approximately ten people at each practice, with no incidents or problems to report.

Arts and Sciences (Lady Eugenia):

Grainne and Euginia attended May War and ran A&S Point for the duration of war. Class proposals were accepted until May 11. There were no issues with the classes other than having to relocate and/or reschedule

Arts and Sciences (Lady Eugenia), cont.:

a couple of them, due to the weather. We still had a really good turnout for the classes themselves. Euginiawas very happy with how the table organization for the classes went, and was very pleased the colored flags stayed put during the inclement weather. So far, with this being the second year for A&S Point, it seems to be doing well. We didn't have as many volunteers as last year; we will plan to do better next year. We had two competitions and only had a total of three folks enter both. We assume the weather had something to do with the small number of entries. We had a couple of drop-in craft circles; we would like to see those expand for next year, and add more of those onto the schedule.

July 19th will be our Guild Summit and Largesse Project Day. We are inviting all of the Guild heads to discuss the upcoming Arts in the Park and other Baronial activities that will involve the Guilds. We will meet earlier with the Guilds; afterwards, we will have our Largesse Project Day. Location TBD.

Arts in the Park is August 2nd and we are starting to organize that. It will be held at Allied Gardens.

Our quilt competition will be kicking off again in August, and we will announce details closer to the date.

Baronial Household (Mistress Fia):

June meeting had ten attendees, two of them newcomers. We discussed the award system in the SCA and how it works.

Baronial Keep (THL Michael):

The Keep is clean… ish.

Chatelaine (Lord Ponç):

Lots of email activity due to Potrero – we have had nine email inquiries from potential newcomers.

Stay tuned for Baronial Laundry Day!

Chirurgeon (Lady Talan):

Nothing to report at this time.

Chronicler (THL Dagný):

Missed the meeting to stay home with a sick puppy, but sent word that she is looking for temporary and permanent stringers for the ST. Lady Euginiavolunteered.

Council Minutes, cont.Herald (Lady Ariana, cont.):

Serpent's Eye:• Christoffer Deschel• Adelwyn Attewatere• Thomas Joseph de Lacy

Marshall (Lord Marco):

There are still people fighting in the park, and Summergate practices as well. Come and kill people!!

Media Officer (Lord Tiberius):

We have gone up by 20 “Likes” on the Barony of Calafia Facebook page, and by 150 “Likes” on the Potrero page. Please let Tiberius know if you would like your announcement to go on the FB page.

Rapier (Don Mallory):

Attended a total of eight Wednesday and Sunday practices; there were between four and seven fighters at each practice, and waivers were collected at each practice.

Lysts (THL Tierrynna):

A bunch of people fought at war.

Unarmoured Combat (Lord Orion):

Practices are Wednesdays at BriercrestPpark. Teaching at Western Seas brought about eight people.

Youth Combat (Lady Arianne):

Attended Potrero War and Iron Brigade practices in June. At Potrero, there were 12 fighters at the Torchlight Tourney, 26 fighters at Saturday’s melees, and 16 fighters at Sunday’s melees. At the 6/14 Brigade practice, there were one to nine combatants, and practice went very well.

There were two items of note from May Wa: first, we did not have the Kingdom loaner gear make it so there were unusual wait times. Kids and parents did a very good job understanding. And second, with the new rules under review, providing your own gear is becoming more advantageous. There is some difficulty communicating armor requirements when we don't have an official set of rules.

There were a lot of new people at Summergateincluding kids from Potrero, all with lots of enthusiasm.

Rec Center Representative (Lady Kimiya):

Below 25 on Wednesday means they aren’t going to charge us.

Constable (Lady Seraphina):

Lost and Found items are in her car. Please see her after the meeting tonight if you are missing something.Happy to report that we did not call 911 even once at Potrero!.

Demos (THL Methias):

Ross - requested to do a demo at the Makers Fair at Balboa Park on October 3rd (before Great Western War).

Exchequer (Mistress Laisarina):

Attended Potrero War and Ad Comm. We are continuing to finalize Potrero financials; a report was tendered at Ad Comm as to income and expenses.

EQ Marshal (Reina):

Nothing to report at this time.

Herald (Lady Ariana ):

Potrero War & Consulting Heraldry at Baronial Scriptorium in May; in June attended Coronation & Consulting Heraldry at Metalworkers Guild.

Potrero War Wrap-up:

An after-action meeting was held this past weekend -feedback was good. If anyone has any additional feedback, please send it in as soon as possible. We had a smaller gate this year than usual, just under 2100, including merchants. Given the weather and rule change, it’s understandable. There were no major constabulary incidents. As yet there is no final tally on volunteer hours. We raised the fee last year but won’t be raising it next year, and it saved our bacon this year.

Corvus and other households really stepped up to uphold the rules and thanks to all off those that made the effort to make war enjoyable despite the changes.

Everyone made a good effort to keep track of their own, with the result that there were fewer lost people.

Very few people paid and did not show up.

Knowne Worlde Handbooks - You can order directly from the SCA website. We have two left; please contact Lord Ponc to get them - first come, first served!

Volunteer hours at Potrero - Fill out card, tally hours, make a list and they set aside 40% of the PROFIT and pay out the volunteer hours with that. Per policy, maximum is $3/hour; minimum is $1/hour. This keeps costs at about $15K a year, which is about the rest of the profit. We are discussing an idea to rearrange how we divide the initial chunk of profit. Proposing to take the Keep amount out first. We are actively seeking a new Keep location; if anyone has a suggestion, remember the new Keep would have to be able to store both trailers and all our items.

Darius wants all the events to pay towards the Keep.

There is a guaranteed amount of money from Potrero, but there is no other event that guarantees an income.

Other fundraising suggestions: Tiberus suggested a fund raiser with t-shirts. Lunch feast instead of an offsite event feast was suggested. An Arts auction was suggested to help break even.

County and Sanitation costs are expected to go up.

Voting potentially next month unless more changes need to be made.

Other New Business:

If anyone has anything they would like to discuss or a problem, please contact the B & B even if it is about them, please contact them, they can’t fix something they don’t know about.

Thanks to everyone for their patience with the new process for selecting the new Seneschal. Seraphina will be stepping up as our new Seneschal at Calafia Anniversary.
