Dear Texas Hereford Association,
I am writing on behalf of the Na-tional Mounted Warfare Foundation to thank you for your kind support and your donation of $1,500.00 in support of our programs. Special thanks to the breeders that donated the semen lot sold at the 2017 Cowtown Invitational during the Fort Worth Stock Show that benefitted the National Mounted War-fare Foundation .
Thanks to your support, we are able to continue our efforts to make the Mounted Warrior Museum a reali-ty. We know that these efforts are only possible because of the contributions we receive from generous donors like you, and we thank you again for be-lieving in and supporting our mission.
Sincerely,Paul E. Funk, EdDPresident & CEONational MountedWarfare Foundation
Dear Jack,I just received my copy of your
annual membership issue and it re-minded me I helped put this book to-gether for a few years starting in 1966. Now, 50 years later you continue to publish a magazine that looks better than ever.
It is a real tribute to you, your staff and your dedicated members that the THA remains an active and vital part of the promotion of Hereford cattle. My guess is many state cattle breed associations in business 50 years ago are no longer active.
Ed StanfieldUvalde, TX
Jack,A d turned out well, magazine
looks real good! Nice story about Jimmy and Claudia Atlas. They are good folks who made things happen, wasn’t “given” to them!
Hope all is going well with you and your folks. A little rain will al-ways help?
I retired after 32 years as County Attorney this January. Never thought I would have served 8 terms (had 4 opponents over time)! Still have pri-vate practice and a “little” more time with cattle Hopefully I can get a little more active in things I like!

Auxiliary Scholarship Committee
I wanted to take a moment to sin-cerely thank you for not only making this scholarship available, but allow-ing me to receive it. I have truly been blessed with an amazing upbringing that provided me with the opportuni-ties to create a resume worth of re-ceiving such grants and scholarships. I have worked extremely hard to make it this far and to see it all pay off is such a spectacular feeling. It feels so great to take a little bit of weight off of my parent’s shoulders. Financial burden is a big thing for parents send-ing their children off to college and I know that they are as grateful as I am. Above, all I am so excited to become a part of the Aggie family. You have truly helped make my dreams come true.
Thank you again.Sincerely,Savannah J. West • Aquilla, TX

ford about you, your cattle and your overall operation. Love to see such good folks be highlighted for all to know and appreciate.
Know our lives are in other worlds from when the girls showed and did Texas and American Hereford stuff, but those are still such sweet memories.

tailgateTALK By Jack Chastain, Editor
There are a huge number of people I wish to thank for their concerns
and support these past few weeks while I had my quadruple by-pass procedure. I am pleased to report that I am doing fine and well on the road to full recovery. My family has been amazing in all that they have done. Next comes our amazing Penni Hiles. She has been a saint to do her jobs
as well as mine without blinking an eye. G.G. Park was great to help fin-ish the July issue and go above and beyond her duties as production edi-tor. I received numerous cards, texts, e-mails and phone calls, but I wish to single out a few who checked in with me with advice and encouragement almost on a daily basis. Thank you Dale Barber, Jim Boyd, Donn Jibbon,
Chad Breeding, Larry Johnson and Mike Doyle.
This issue covers our annual TJHA-TJPHA State Show and field day. It was another huge success and each year just seems to just get bigger and better. This year we had nearly 200 exhibitors enter over 400 entries. Many thanks are due to all the juniors and adults who contributed to the event. For those interested, we have a photo album on our home page where you can click and view many shots taken at the show. If you want to print one of the photos, just double click and it should give you a high resolu-tion photo to print. Thanks to Erich Schmidt and Katina Costerisan for photos from the show.
We are proud of the June/July is-sue we were able to assemble. Thanks to all advertisers. A big thank you to Jimmy Dyer for allowing us to use his painting on our cover. Hereford demand seems to keep growing. By the number of calls and private sale results, we should have a fantastic fall sale season.
Our web site continues to be very active in getting sale results. It has been eleven years since our website first appeared. We have recorded over 175,000 viewers in this time. I am most pleased to hear from those of you who call to tell me the cattle are sold. I encourage more members to avail themselves of this service. More cattle listings will only draw more parties looking to buy. Success breeds success. We do ask that you keep the listings current and especially let us know when the cattle are sold. But for now, keep the information com-ing. We have had a huge number of requests for heifers and cows. Any-one with female Hereford cattle for sale needs to let us know. I am also pleased to report that our Facebook presence has been a great success and that we now have 3520 followers. Even our Texas Junior Hereford Asso-ciation Facebook page is popular.
The THA is involved in a lot of activities and the next few weeks are when a number of these events willcontinued on page 24

take place. We co-sponsor a booth at the annual Beef Cattle Short Course in Col-lege Station with TPHA. I am excited to hear from a num-ber of members who have never attended the BCSC that plan to attend the 2017 event. I look forward to this event every year because of all the interesting new people I have the opportunity to meet and learn from. The program is also very timely and ben-eficial to anyone involved with cattle. We have plans to attend a number of cattle clinics the next few months. I encourage our members to attend one in their area. It is a great opportunity to meet fellow cattlemen and possible new customers.
I remind members that bull and female entries are due now for our Fall Classic sale in Buffalo as well as the Cowtown Invitational Sale and the 49th Annual White-face Replacement female sale. Remember the Whiteface Re-placement sale can accept black baldie heifers and we really need to increase our numbers in this division in order to continue to offer this class. Please help us gather a quality offering. If you do not have heifers, encourage a customer or neighbor to con-sign a pen or two. A success-ful sale is a good reflection for everyone involved in the Hereford industry.
There are many shows, sales and other promotional events coming in the next few months. I encourage THA members to attend all that you can and promote your Hereford breed every chance you get. Remember THA is here to help Sellers sell and Buyers buy. Until next month, stay cool. ★
