4 The Ohio Photographer - 59th Annual Convention Issue
In order to stay ahead of the competition, we all have to strive for excellence in everything that we do. From running a professional organization like the Professional Photographers of Ohio, to running your studio, being the best we can be and doing the best job possible has to be our ultimate goal. The PPO is constantly striving to find ways to help you develop
professionally in order to ensure your success.
The Northeast District Print Competition being held in conjunction with Photoblast, can help you stay ahead of your competition. This competition will allow you to have your work judged not only against photographers from Ohio, but potentially from a number of other states.
The programming that we’ve put together for you for this year’s Convention is amazing. There is truly something for everyone. Whether your niche is weddings, seniors, families and children or other types of photography, this line up is first rate.
The Kalahari Resort and Convention Center is one of the finest in the state and even this part of the country. The expansion that they have done since we were here last year is remarkable. The 120,000 sq. ft. addition brings Kalahari's convention center total square footage to 215,000. This facility is truly first rate!
I would like to thank PPO President Kristin Woods for her unparalleled leadership this year. Kristin provided direction to the board and my staff throughout the year. My staff and I are very grateful for her passion and dedication to PPO. Her direction and guidance made this a banner year for PPO. I encourage you to thank Kristin when you see her.
Accomplishments under Kristin’s presidency include a new logo, a new tagline, a new website, streamlining our registration and dues process, creation of an Aspiring Member category, a rebranded Annual Convention and Trade Show and a rebranded Fall Conference. Her hard work and vision truly paid off!
Thanks also to my staff for their hard work and dedication. They helped make the above-mentioned changes possible. We look forward to serving you for many years to come!

Message From The Executive Director by Phil Craig
5www.ppofohio.org -
When you are President of an organization like PPO, a year sure can go by quickly. What initially seems like a lot of time to make a difference; ends up going by in a flash. PPO’s leadership got together in July 2011 for a strategic planning session to try to do just that – to make a difference.
We wanted to make a difference to PPO and its members for not
just this year, but for years to come. We wanted to envision and implement some positive changes that would position our organization to be an indispensible resource for professional photographers in Ohio. We wanted to examine some of our outdated ways in order to catapult our organization into the future. What we ended up with was complete rebranding of our organization and its events. Some of the changes you will see reflected in this magazine, some you will notice throughout the course of the year.
One of the first things that you will notice is we have a new logo and tagline. We received 173 entries from designers in our logo redesign contest. The logo you see in this magazine was the one that our board
members liked best. We also wanted a tagline that we could incorporate with our logo that explained who we are and what we want to accomplish. If you haven’t already, you will start to notice the three words, “Connect. Enrich. Thrive,” tied to and printed on virtually everything that we do. We want our members to Connect with us and with each other. We want to Enrich both your career and your lives. We want to help you Thrive in your career.
Photoblast 2012 is our new name for the PPO’s Annual Convention and Trade Show, being held March 14-18 at Kalahari Resort and Conference Center. We wanted to communicate the fact that our show is both educational and fun. The ideas that you can get from our great lineup of speakers can lay the
groundwork for your future. You’ll have a great time, while learning from the best that our industry has to
offer. For those of you who have been attending this event for many years, you will see that we’ve also streamlined our registration options with the hope of making the registration process easier for everyone.
Our Fall Conference and Trade Show, which will be held in November in Columbus is now called PhotoU. You are never too old to go back to school to learn new techniques or concepts that you can use to make your business more successful. PhotoU is for both the seasoned and new photographer alike.
PPO leadership also examined our membership categories. We wanted to remove as many barriers to joining as possible, while still keeping PPO an organization for true professionals. Most notably, we added and Aspiring member option. This allows the individual who is just getting started in the business to become a part of PPO at a reduced rate and give PPO the opportunity to share with them the right way to do business.
All of these changes have laid the groundwork for a great new image for the PPO. We’ve completely revamped our website, we have a fully electronic newsletter and both our printed and online image has changed. If you haven’t lately, be sure to check out our website at ppofohio.org and our Facebook page at www.facebook.com/ppofohio.
Our board and staff worked very hard on these changes. We want your PPO experience to be the best it can be. I hope you will agree that we have made a difference this year!

Why Didn't Someone Tell Me This Before Now!Early Bird Speaker 2Jon AllynSaturday March 17, 20127:30 a.m. - 9:00 a.m.Room - Cypress
About Jon...For over thirty years, Jon Allyn has been fascinated with light. His ability to create and control the subtle qualities of light has defined his unique style of illustrative portraiture. Jon contends that “the Illustrative Portrait takes the viewer beyond the initial glance to a visual response that provokes interaction on an emotional level”.
His powerful images and artistic figure studies have earned him countless awards including PPA’s Imaging Excellence Award, nineteen Photographer-of-the-Year honors, most recently PPA Diamond and was honored at PPA’s Grand Imaging ceremony
for his illustrative work.
As a popular speaker for over two decades, Jon has shared his passion for photography through educational and entertaining programs. His 2004 induction into the Wisconsin Professional
Photographers Association’s Hall of Fame and the CameraCraftsmen of America were both milestones in
his continuing quest for excellence.
About the Program...This fast-paced program will give you the tools necessary to
obtain consistently, predictable results with your lighting. You’ll understand quantity of light, quality
of light, specularity, contrast control and much more. This means your creativity will EXPLODE
because you’re in control.
Its been said, “A good photographer can “see” the light.”
Jon Allyn contends that, “A great photographer can create the light that only their imagination sees.”
Forget the myths you’ve been told about lighting and learn exactly what you need to know.
Once you see how easy it is to create powerful lighting, you’ll wonder why someone didn’t tell you all this before now. Once you understand and apply the secrets of lighting it all becomes second nature thus allowing your right brain the freedom to create.
Don’t just take a photograph, when you can make a photograph.

WYSAAWYG (What You See Ain't Always What You Get)Speaker 3Fuzzy & Shirley DuenkelSaturday March 17, 20129:15 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. Room - Indigo Bay
About Fuzzy and Shirley...In 1975, Fuzzy and Shirley Duenkel of West Bend, Wisconsin started their "mom and pop" business, as many photographers do, when a friend asked Fuzzy to photograph her wedding. In 1996, the Duenkels dropped weddings to concentrate solely on portraits. Fuzzy and Shirley's business evolved into mostly a specialty studio with under 100 total sessions per year. While they photograph babies, children, families, couples and glamour, high school seniors are his favorite. Seniors are his easiest subjects since they require little space (unlike families), hold still (unlike kids), do what they're told (unlike babies), understand English (unlike pets), and will give him as much time as he needs (unlike weddings). Fuzzy practically insists on working on location with each session. Fuzzy feels his specialty is his total comfort with creating portraits in clients' homes, especially if he has never been there before. His goal is to make a variety of
images that don't necessarily look like they were done in the clients' bedrooms, garages, or hallways ... even
though they were! Fuzzy handles all image capture and processing. Shirley handles everything else, which includes consultations, sales
and orders. The two compliment each other's strengths and weaknesses. Fuzzy started entering prints in Wisconsin
PPA competition in 1993. In that and subsequent competitions he's entered, Fuzzy was awarded four Fuji Masterpiece Awards, earned top awards for the
Wisconsin PPA senior folio competition twelve times; was Wisconsin's Photographer of the Year twice; won Senior Photographer's International folio competitions
five times; Senior Portrait Artists' Photographer of the Year, had 29 prints selected for National Traveling
Loan Collection, two for Disney's Epcot Center, one for Photokina in Germany, one for the International
Hall of Fame and Museum in Oklahoma, in addition to numerous other awards and accolades.
About the Program...On-location lighting has long been Fuzzy's specialty ... and obsession. He'll focus on the various lighting tools and techniques we must master if we want to continue to be viable and relevant in today's fiercely competitive and challenging market. Fuzzy will show examples and diagrams of the lighting used to create extraordinary images of high school seniors in very ordinary locations.
If you're unsure of your ability to cope with the contrast of sunlight, the cross-color complexities of shade, or the dull flatness of overcast skies ... this program will not only answer your questions, but make you more money than this convention cost you!

Reality Check For Wedding PhotographersSpeaker 6Pete WrightSunday March 18, 20123:00 p.m. – 6:00 p.m. Room - Indigo Bay
About Pete...As a fourth-generation artist and a second generation photographer, Pete Wright was raised in North Carolina in an environment rich in art and photography. His photographs were first published when he was 14 years old when he accepted his first
paying job as a photographer working for a regional newspaper. Years later, in 1997 PW Photography’s first studio opened
in Greenville, North Carolina. The following year the company moved to Richmond, Virginia. The studio’s work has ranged from
portraits and weddings to sports and editorials.During his 25 years of working as a photographer Pete has
earned the distinction of Master Photographer and Photographic Craftsman from PPA. He also received Photographer of the Year
honors from PPA five consecutive years from 2007 through 2011, has been awarded several Fuji and Kodak Gallery Awards, was accepted
into the PPA Loan Collection multiple times, has been featured in several national publications and is fortunate to have lectured around
the world about his passion for photography. He loves to teach and inspire others to follow or find their passion in photography and use that passion to build a successful business!About the Program...According to the U.S Census, in 2009 the United States had the lowest number of weddings since 1968. A 40 year low in weddings along with a surge in the number of photographers willing to photograph them meant the game was changing
and the rules we used to play by were now out the window. Now the brides are returning to the market in 2011 and they are spending on average $5K more per wedding than they did in 2008. So with brides coming back and spending more money, now is the time for photographers to get a reality check and learn everything they need to know on how to get those big budget weddings to book with you. Brides are more savvy now and know the difference between the photographer that is using Photoshop to fix photos and the ones that use it to enhance them, they are more willing to pay for quality. Brides have the world at their fingertips as a resource to find the perfect photographer for them, the World Wide Web has grown. They also now expect more
for their money when they book a photographer for their wedding day. What that means for photographers is, WE HAVE TO BE
BETTER! We have to take better photos, be aware of all of the places brides are looking, know about the latest trends in our industry, and we have to be able to quickly adapt. It is no longer ok to sit back and wait for the phone to ring, now you have to be aggressive and and market yourself unlike ever before. Come sit in with Pete Wright as he speaks about the changing wedding photo industry. He will reveal the things you need to do to improve as a photographer, the things that brides now expect, the best places to be found by brides, and the things you need to do to make sure that you stand out in a very crowded market. It’s time to upgrade your business and do a complete reboot so that you are doing all of the things that the modern bride expects to see from their wedding photographer!

DISTRICT
PHOTOGRAPHIC
COMPETITION RULES This District competition is a precursor to PPA’s International Photographic Competition, a world-renowned photographic competition where entries are evaluated against a standard of excellence using the 12 Elements of a Merit Image. (For more information including video tutorials and reference
materials go to www.ppa.com/competitions/international.php.)
PPA members are eligible to earn PPA’s Seal of Approval. When an image bearing a Seal of Approval is submitted to the PPA International Photographic Competition, an exhibition merit is earned, which can place the entrant closer to an award or a degree like the Master of Photography degree. These rules pertain to images created by traditional photographic processes as well as those captured and/or manipulated electronically with a digita1 camera or scanner.
ELIGIBILITY
1. Entrant must have captured and created the original exposure.
2. Any entry that has been reproduced from an existing photograph, portrait, graphic or any other artwork produced by another person is a violation of the competition rules and will not be judged, accepted or displayed. If an entry, in the good-faith opinion of the Photographic Exhibition Committee, violates copyright, trademark or any other applicable law, that entry shall be disqualified.
3. The entrant’s name must not be visible on the entry.
4. A maximum of four entries may be submitted per entrant.
5. Competition entry must be completed using the PPA/District online entry system prior to the online entry deadline. On-site entry is not possible, but print cases may be hand delivered (subject to District Rules) if the online entry was completed.
6. No entry will be eligible if it has been made under the supervision of an instructor or as a class assignment.
7. No two entries may be of the same subject.
8. Entries previously merited at any PPA International Competition are not eligible, including any image from a merited album.
9. Entries bearing the PPA Affiliated Exhibition Seal of Approval and submitted according to the rules of entry by makers from within their assigned District will be automatically accepted for exhibition only when submitted to the next PPA International Photographic Competition immediately following the District competition where awarded. (Out of District entries are not eligible for the Seal of Approval.)
10. Entry media includes prints, digital submissions, physical albums and digital albums.
11. If an image is awarded an exhibition merit in any category of PPA competition, it may not be entered again in any other category at any time by any entrant. No image that receives a merit may be entered more than once under any condition.
PHOTOGRAPHIC OPEN COMPETITION CATEGORIES You must designate one of the below categories for each entry:
1. Portrait: Consists of Portrait, Wedding and Album entries. 2. Illustrative: Consists of commercial/industrial images, scenics,

KODAK GALLERY ELITE AWARD QUALIFICATIONS.
Kodak introduced the Gallery Awards in 1985 as a way to honor and promote the importance and value of excellence in professional photography.
Kodak has always represented quality imaging through its many products and services and will continue to work to elevate the importance of professional, quality imaging within the industry, as well as with customers. It’s a connection we’re pleased to make.
Therefore, we are delighted once again to salute and support outstanding professional photography and photographers by presenting our annual Gallery and Gallery Elite Awards. The Gallery Awards are judged on a state or regional basis, with winners going on to compete at the national level for the Gallery Elite Award.
Gallery Awards will be presented, throughout the year, at annual Professional Photographers of America (PPA) regional and state conventions — in addition to those events’ customary awards.
The annual Gallery Elite Award will be judged prior to the national PPA conference and trade show and honored at the Gallery Elite Award Gala, held during the PPA’s national gathering, “Imaging USA,” traditionally in January of each year.
Photographers will be considered for a KODAK Gallery Award in each of the following fi ve categories:
• Portrait or Landscape Print
• Wedding Print
• Illustrative, Commercial, Electronic Imaging Print
• Printed Album or Book (any category)
• Print or Album using KODAK PROFESSIONAL ENDURA Metallic Paper
A region and/or state organization may award up to fi ve (5) trophies total, in any combination of the designated categories. For example, if there are no entries to be judged or that meet the judging-point criteria in a certain category, more than one Gallery Award may be given in the other designated categories. However, Kodak prefers that one Gallery Award be given in each of the fi ve categories, provided each entry has achieved the minimum 80-point criteria. The primary purpose of the awards is to recognize and further the use of professionally-printed photography, especially if it utilizes KODAK PROFESSIONAL Products (papers and chemistry). Therefore, Gallery and Gallery Elite trophies are intended to be awarded for prints and printed albums, not electronic-only images and video albums (e.g., CD, DVD), which are outside of Kodak’s intended purpose.

Gallery Award winners are urged to register, especially if they desire to compete for the annual Gallery Elite Award. A registration card is included in the box with each Gallery Award trophy.
THE BEST OF THE BEST.
The KODAK Gallery Elite honors the “best of the best.” It is one more way Kodak can showcase outstanding, high-quality images and to continue elevating the art of professional photographers, as well as thanking them, their associates, and clients, who have helped make the Gallery Elite Award a symbol of photographic excellence.

It is the responsibility of the photographer whose entry is submitted to own copyrights to each entry and to have in his/her possession signed and dated releases for each subject, model and location. By entering the competition, the photographer acknowledges and accepts this complete responsibility and grants Kodak use of the entry.
If you are chosen as a KODAK Gallery Award winner, you may be eligible to compete for the prestigious Gallery Elite Award.
When a Gallery Award winner chooses to compete at the next level, the Gallery Elite Award competition, the entrant must meet the following requirements.
yrtne lanigirO .1 must have been produced either digitally or with KODAK PROFESSIONAL Film.
2. Image must be printed on any of these:
• KODAK PROFESSIONAL ENDURA Papers
• KODAK PROFESSIONAL ENDURA Display Materials
• KODAK PROFESSIONAL EKTATHERM Media
• KODAK PROFESSIONAL Inkjet Photo Paper
3. Image must have won a state or regional KODAK Gallery Award.
snoissimbus tnirP .noissimbus rof elbatpecca si tnirp etacilpud A .4 will not be returned, unless special request is made in advance of shipment to Kodak. However, albums will be returned.
Each fall, Gallery Award winners will receive a letter with instructions from Kodak inviting them to compete in the Elite competition. Only those individuals who are registered in the Gallery Award Winners’ Database will receive an invitation. So, it is important that Gallery Award winners register and that PPA regional/state judging personnel promptly submit the names of Gallery Award winners to Kodak.
Press-printed materials are not eligible for KODAK Gallery Elite Award consideration but may qualify for a separate award that is granted by Kodak’s Graphic Communications Group for items made on the KODAK NEXPRESS Digital Color Platform.
For more information, go to www.kodak.com/go/galleryaward
An elegant engraved crystal trophy will be presented to the winning photographers, along with a specially-designed lapel pin.

For photographers who are interested in regular photography-related programs and more frequent get-togethers with peers, there are eight affiliated professional photographer groups located throughout Ohio. These groups are relatively small, meet about once a month and have low dues. They have yearly print competitions, sponsored by PPA, and other events. In addition, there is a group for photographic art special-ists. For more information, contact the representative of the group closest to you.
