INTRODUCTIOX.
The value of tombstone records for the purposes of
the historian is not yet fully appreciated. Some day, when it is too late, we shall awake to a sense of ourneglect. Apart from its intrinsic value, the followingrecord is printed in the hope that others may be led
to do likewise.
There are three old cemeteries in Charlestonwhose origin antedates the nineteenth century, thoughmost of their tombs are modern. These old ceme-teries contain many inscriptions of great historical
interest and which throw a valuable side-light uponthe early history of the Jews in America. Time hasborne heavily on many of these stones, many of
their inscriptions being decipherable only with thegreatest difficulty. This is due, to some extent, to
the old custom of having flat slabs. Several of themI have literally unearthed and many are no longer in
existence.
I have thought it well for the sake of completenessto include all three cemeteries in this volume, and I
have added such historical data as will make therecord complete. The oldest cemetery at Coming Street is laid out in
rows more or less regular. The inscriptions arecopied in order and the location of the tombstones is
therefore quite easy. I have not followed the in-
scriptions line for line, for that would have neces-sitated a much larger volume and, while addingperhaps to its appearance, would not have enhancedits value. My object has been to preserve the recordand not to perpetuate the eccentricities of old-timetomb-stones. I would only add that I have several
times compared my transcripts with the originals. I
can assure the reader of the absolute accuracy ofeach and every one of them.
The cemetery at Coming Street is the oldest Jewishcemetery in South Carolina. It was originally pur-chased by Isaac Da Costa, the first Hazan of BethElohim, for a private burying place for his ownfamily. "Finding that it would be a convenient placefor the Burial Ground of the Jews' Congregation in
general," he, "out of regard for the said congregation,
became willing and desirous, and did afterwards intendthat the same should be conveyed in trust to the con-gregation." Carrying out his original intention. IsaacDa Costa, conveyed this burial ground in 1764, for aconsideration of seventy pounds lawful money of theprovince, in trust to certain trustees" for a place of
burial for the use of the Jews residing in CharlesTown or elsewhere within the Province of SouthCarolina, who do and shall conform to the Jewishrites and ceremonies in general, and who do and shall
conform to and observe the rules, orders and regula-tions of the Jews congregation in Charles Town namedBeth Eloim."The following are the trustees mentioned in the
deed:Joshua Hart, Immanuel Cortissos, Joseph Da Costa
and Samuel Da Costa, of Charles Town, and mem-bers of the Jews congregation in Charles Town knownby the name of Beth Eloim.Benjamin Mendes Da Costa, Joseph Salvador, Esq.,

amin Dias Fernandes, Isaac Henriquez and AbrahamAguilar, of the Island of Jamaica, and members of

How delightful is the contemplation of the virtues
of the departed! And well can we indulge this feeling
on reviewing the life of the revered being whose re-
mains here repose. She was the virtuous woman,"whose price is above rubies, and whose children rise
up and call her blessed," for the precepts of God werein her heart and Avere made the rule of her conductthrough life. Her survivors can truly exclaim in the
words of Holy Writ: "Let me die the death of the
righteous and may my last end be like hers."

He was akind husband, an affectionate brother, an upright anduseful citizen, his hand and heart were always open to

NOTE.
Adjoining the old cemetery and on a somewhathigher level, is the burial ground of the old ShearithIsrael congregation. The introduction of the organ into
the new synagogue of Beth Elohim in 1840, dividedthe congregation into two sections. The orthodox par-ty, having appealed to the law courts in vain, secededand formed the Shearith Israel congregation. So bitter
was the feeling between the two parties, that inter-
course between them hardly existed. The secedingsection went so far as to purchase their own burialground. This was walled off from the old cemeteryof Beth Elohim. After the re-union of the two congrre-
gytions in 1866, the cemeteries were likewise unitedand the dividing wall puHel down. The followingare the inscriptions in this portion of the ground:

The Da Costa Cemetery.
The early history of this cemetery, which is situ-
ated between Hanover and Amherst streets, is in-
volved in obscurity. It originally formed part of Lot48 of Hampstead, but in spite of much research, I havebeen unable to trace its successive owners.
In a codicil to the will of Sarah Da Costa, the widowof Isaac Da Costa, made on October 7, 1793, she directsthat her executors "do purchase out of my estate,
eighty feet square of a lot of land, situate in Hamp-stead, which I give and devise to my executors to beheld by them and their heirs, or by such persons asthey may appoint, for the sole purpose of being aburial gi'ound for my family and the Portuguese Jews."
[Wills, Book C, 1793-1800, p. 63.]
This ground, however, must have been the propertyof the Da Costa family many years before this becauseIsaac Da Costa, the elder, was buried there in 1783 andJoseph Salvador in 1786. as well as other members ofthe Da Costa family. It was consecrated in 1786, as welearn from the following quaint notice in the Char-leston Evening Gazette of February 3, 1786:
"February 3d. 1786.
Yesterday the Portuguese Jewish Congregation ofthis City, called "Beth Elohim Unveh Shallom" or theHouse of the Lord and Mansion of Peace, proceeded totheir burying ground in Hampstead, in order to lay theF"oundation Stones of the Wall ;—after the usualprayers were performed. The first stone at the N. E. corner was laid by Mr.
Joseph Da Costa.—The second ditto at the N. E., ditto,
by Mr. Isaac Da Costa.—The third ditto at the S. W.ditto by Mr. Joseph Depallacios.—The fourth ditto, atthe N. W. ditto by Mr. Joseph Benzakin.—The fifth
ditto at the S. post of the gateway, by Samuel DaCosta.—And the sixth ditto at the N. ditto by JosephAbendanone.A number of gentlemen attended the Ceremony, who
expressed their satisfaction at the decent solemnityobserved on the occasion."
104
It will be noticed from the above that the name of
the congregation is referred to, not as "Beth Elohim,"but as "Beth Elohim Unveh Shallom—a corroborationof the suggestion I made in my pamphlet reprints, that
the name of the congregation was originally "BethElohim Unveh Shallom" and that it was called "BethElohim" for short. [See my "Jews of South Carolina"IV, 1783-1800, pp 8-9.] It is of course within the boundsof possibility that there were formerly two societies
or congregations which afterwards amalgamated. There is no evidence for such a supposition, however, and it is exceedingly improbable. This burial ground has had a chequered history.
After the death of Isaac Da Costa, who died intestate
in 1783, the property passed into the possession of
Joseph Da Costa his "survivor and administrator."In 1809, in consequence of a suit against the estateof Isaac Da Costa, this property was levied upon bythe sheriff and was sold at public auction to thehighest bidder. It was bought in by Isaac Da Costa, the younger, for .$500 sterling. [See Mesne ConveyanceRecords, Vol. X9, p. 394.]
In 1809, it was conveyed by Isaac Da Costa to Eman-uel De La Motta, Jacob De La Motta and David Aben-danone, Trustees for the Portuguese Jews, "in trust for
and purpose following, that is to say: in trust,
that the said lot of land shall be kept as a burialground for the said Portuguese Jews and to and for noother purpose or use whatever."
In 1820, it was still the private burial grovmd of theDa Costa family—witness the following from the 'Con-stitution of Kaal Kado.sh Beth-Elohim" of 1820:"There shall be one congregational burial ground
only, wherein all the deceased members of this congre-gation shall be interred, provided that this law shallnet extend to any family place of interment alreadyestablished * * * *
This law considers the Burial Ground, heretoforecalled the Da Costa's, to be properly belonging to thefamily of Isaac Da Costa, Senr., deceased, into whichhis near relations are permitted to be interred and noother person, not even such persons as have relationsalready deposited there. * * * [Rule IX.]
In 1828, Jacob De La Motta, the only survivor of thetrustees appointed in 1809, having resigned his trust, other trustees were appointed: Abraham A. Massias,Abraham Ottolengui, Ralph Canter and Edwin Canter.
105
On September 27th, 1847, two of these trustees
—
Ralph Canter and Edwin Canter having meanwhiledied, Abraham A. Massias and Abraham Ottolenguirenounced their trusteeship and conveyed the cemetery•'to the President and Trustees of the Hebrew Syna-gogue of K. K. Beth Elohim, on the express conditionthat ten feet square within the said burial ground be
perpetually reserved for the use of the said AbrahamA. Massias for interment or otherwise as he may di-
rect, next to or near the spot where were interred th«
remains of the Salvador family, and also, that tei^
feet square will in the said burial ground be perpetu-ally reserved for the use of the said Abraham Otto-lengui, for interment or otherwise as he may direct, of
any part he may select."
The deed, is recorded in the office of Mesne Convey-ance, Vol X9, p. 396 sq.
This cemetery is now used as a free burial groundfor the Jewish poor, though there rest within its wallssome of the most distinguished Jews who ever lived
in South Carolina. Three of the flat slabs adjoining thetomb of the illustrious philanthropist Joseph Salva-dor, are missing. They were apparently stolen and maybe now adorning another cemetery or serving ashearthstones in some of the shanties that abound in
the neighborhood. These slabs once covered the re-
mains of members of the Da Costa family and I havebeen able to identify the graves through the beforementioned will of Sarah Da Costa, who directs in thecodicil above quoted, that "tombstones be purchasedand placed over the graves of Mr. Moses Pimento, mymother Deah Pimento and my two sisters Mrs. I. Cohenand R. Da Costa."The following are all the inscriptions that remain
in this old burying ground. Many of its tombstones arein pieces.

The Cemetery at Hanover Street.
This private Jewish cemetery, whose origin ante-dates the nineteenth century, was practically unknownin Charleston till I called attention to it. How I cameto find it I have told elsewhere. (See my PamphletReprints "Old Jewish Cemeteries.") It is strange thatthis cemetery is not mentioned in the Constitution of
Beth Elohim of 1820.
This ground was conveyed in 1798 by Betzje Hen-rickson to Henry Moses, Solomon Moses, Meyer Derk-heim, Samuel Hyams, Benjamin Tores and SolomonHarby in trust "as a burying ground and place of in-
terment for the said * * * and their descendants, and also such other person and persons professingJudaism, as the Trustees for the time being or a ma-jority of them shall for that purpose approve of." Afurther clause is added "that the Trustees abovenamed and the survivors of them and their successorsshall for ever be incapable of selling, disposing of, ali-
enating, transferring, exchanging, dividing or givingup the premises aforesaid from the issue, descendantsand families of the original trustees aforesaid, so asto exclude them from interment therein, to any personor persons, sectary or sectaries, society or societies,
congregation or congregations of whatever descriptionor denomination."
This deed is recorded in the office of Mesne Convey-ance Vol W6, p. 397 sq. The following are the inscrip-tions on the tombstones:

NOTE.
Here and there in the foregoing pages, the order ofthe inscriptions has had to be changed to meet theexigencies of the printer. It should also be noted thatthere are about half a dozen tombstones with Hebrewinscriptions in the Coming Street cemetery which havebeen omitted owing to the fact that they cannot beidentified.
