Property Committee outside Fall cleanup is Saturday, November 8th, at 9:00am. A signup sheet is posted with

tasks to do. Refreshments will be provided. Work will end at 12:00pm. All are welcome to come help! Join us for the Webster Festival of Choirs at Holy Trinity Church at 1460 Ridge Rd, in Webster, NY 14580! The festival will occur as a service at 7pm on November 9 and our own organist, Amanda Mole, will play the service music. This is a chance to hear all the different church choirs of Webster sing individually and then combine in to a massive choir for one piece. Our Senior Choir will sing Lass dich nur nichts nicht dauren by Johannes Brahms. If you know you'll miss it, please come to the 11am service on November 2 (All Saints Day) at Immanuel for a chance to hear this great piece again. The text is as follows: Laß dich nur nichts nicht dauren Mit Trauern, Sei stille! Wie Gott es fügt, So sei vergnügt Mein Wille.

Was willst du heute sorgen Auf morgen? Der Eine steht allem für; Der gibt auch dir das Deine.

Sei nur in allem Handel Ohn Wandel, Steh feste! Was Gott beschleußt, Das ist und heißt das Beste.

Amen. Translation: Do not be sorrowful or regretful; Be calm, as God has ordained, and thus my will shall be content.

What do you want to worry about from day to day? There is One who stands above all who gives you, too, what is yours.

Only be steadfast in all you do, stand firm; what God has decided, that is and must be the best.

Amen. If you are free at the time of the festival, please come support our music program and our Senior Choir as they participate in this exciting musical opportunity!

Pastor Paul’s Ponderings…

Dear Members of Immanuel:

Welcoming. Hospitality. These are two key words in church life today.

Two years ago when I was on sabbatical, Joan and I worshipped at ten different Christian congregations. I very intentionally wanted to see how and who would take a moment or two with us to welcome us, to direct us to the right place, to guide us when needed in worship. Some churches did an amazing ministry in this regard. There were a few that missed it completely. I was left with the feeling that I was “not one of them” and if I was coming back, I would have to figure it out and find my own way in.

So, I was wondering…do we extend a warm welcome to all who come to worship at Immanuel? All – members, guests, visitors – regardless of who they are. Do we practice hospitality and aid all who come to worship at Immanuel? Worship is very often the entry point of people into congregational life. And, while we are familiar with the layout of the building and the style and rhythms of worship, often time (or is it most of the time?) people who come in our door are not familiar with Lutheran worship or how we do things.

What is important for us to do when we see someone we do not know in worship?

Watch for visitors, greet them and introduce them to a few other people.

Warmly and genuinely welcome them with a hospitable and meaningful greeting.

Learn their names and introduce them to others – don’t assume that automatically happens.

Introduce them to me after worship. Be sensitive and if they appear to feel uneasy with

attention, slow down. Make room for late arriving visitors and if they seem

“lost” step forward and offer assistance. Make sure they have a bulletin (you know where they

are; they don’t!). Guide them during worship if they are befuddled. The “Pew Pads” are very helpful to us in maintaining

contact with visitors, encourage them to sign them (right after you do).

Be proud of Immanuel – it is a place where we share in God’s Word and Sacraments.

In Christ,

Pastor Paul

Spieth Feb. 19th - The Age of Miracles by Karen Thompson Walker (this is the "If All of Rocheter Reads the Same Book" title sponsored by Writers and Books).

“Now to him who by the power at work within us is able to

accomplish abundantly far more than all we can ask or imagine, to

him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus to all generations, forever and ever. Amen”

Ephesians 3:20-21

Immanuel Lutheran exists as evidence of God’s generous love known to us in Jesus Christ. We want to thank all of you who are able to participate in our Celebration Dinner on Saturday, November 1st and/or Celebration Sunday on November 2nd. Our Fearless Generosity emphasis has helped us to see the importance of trusting in God’s guidance and care, moving forward in confidence as we have been called to Celebrate…Grow…& Serve. It is great to “Hear the Pennies Dropping” each week in the offering plate and to hear the children from Sunday school sing with such enthusiasm. We are truly blessed! If you are not able to turn in your pledge card this weekend, you can drop it in the offering plate or mail it to Immanuel. We are thankful to the many who are willing to make a commitment to Christ’s church and the ministry of this congregation. Together we can reach out to others as stewards of God’s abundant love and grace! In Christian fellowship, Your Stewardship Committee: Mike Herrman, Joan Frank, Pastor Paul, Wendy & Gary Cannon, Jan Brederson, Bernie Russell, & Lori Derleth

Offering Envelope Changes For 2015 there will be a change in how you receive your offering envelopes. In the past you picked up your box of envelopes at church. With the new year we will begin a mail program where your envelopes are mailed directly to

your home. Every other month you will receive a new set of envelopes for your use.

It is our hope that we will eliminate some of the waste that occurs with our current system where we have many boxes of envelopes that are not used each year.

Children in our Sunday school program will continue to use a box set but, they will have a more child centered theme. Children entering confirmation will be included in the direct mail program.

We have had a busy first few months of Sunday School this year! There have also been some new faces in our classrooms, including the 3/4 year old room, First/Second Grade Room, and

5th/6th Grade room. Please be sure to welcome any new faces you have seen!

The teachers have been busy brainstorming new ideas for ways to help our friends in Zambia. Please look for more information to come in the next few months! We have welcomed the back to school season with a fire drill in early October and are happy to tell you that everyone knows the way out of the classrooms safely! Also, in October we have been practicing the Stewardship song and the children were excited to hear this is a song Pastor Paul sang when he was in Sunday School! The children are excitedly preparing for the Advent Season and have begun working on the Christmas Pageant. Save these dates: November 30~Advent Workshop and December 14~Christmas Pageant.

Young Families Outing Some of our younger families (families with children ages 3-5yrs old) had the opportunity to get together on Sunday, October 5th to enjoy a fall festive lunch and

then celebrate the season by going to Gro-Moore Farms in Henrietta. The children enjoyed many activities: a haunted house, different mazes to run through, hayrides, duck races, a piglet race, and pumpkin painting. It was a wonderful day and lots of fun to see the children and parents develop friendships that extend beyond Sunday School. Interested in attending the next event? Contact Heather Sponable at 315/524-5405. Look for another activity this winter.

WEEKDAY BIBLE STUDIES

Pastor Paul leads two Bible Studies. This year we are discussing the Scriptures read during our Sunday morning worship. We will “look back” at the readings for the prior Sunday and also “look ahead” to the readings for the coming Sunday.

The evening Bible Study meets on the first and third Mondays of the month 7:00 – 8:30 PM. The morning Bible Study meets at 10:00 – 11:30 AM (NOTE THE NEW START TIME!) on the first and third Thursdays. Both Bible Studies meet at Immanuel.

Here is the schedule for the next couple of weeks– Monday, November 3 & Thursday, November 6

Monday, November 17 & Thursday, November 20

Monday, December 1 & Thursday, December 4

You are welcome (and encouraged!) to participate. Through our discussion and reading, we seek to learn and use God’s message of love in our lives. This Bible Study experience is user friendly! If you have your own Bible (a favorite translation) please bring it with you. Or, there are Bibles at church you may use.

To My Immanuel Family:

Thank you so much for the care package! It was a delightful surprise to have something sent from close to home. Senior year (already?!) is going well here at Penn State. I hope to see you next month over Thanksgiving Break. I also hope all is just as well up there in Webster!

Calling all Youth of Immanuel! Do you play an instrument/sing? Do you have a song or two that you've practiced and would like to play? The 5pm Christmas Eve service is your chance! All instruments and voice parts are welcome, as well as all music (bonus points are awarded for Christmas-themed songs, but anything is OK!). We'll get a group together to participate in the Prelude for the service. This is a great chance to play something for your family and friends at Immanuel and participate in the service in a fun way once a year. If you're enrolled lessons for your instrument (or voice!), please talk to Amanda after church to be a part of our Christmas Eve service! [email protected], (774) 262-6033

ADVANCE NOTICE FIRST COMMUNION CLASSES

Start in January

First Communion Classes for youth will be held in January on Wednesday evenings. First Communion Sunday will be on February 8, 2015.

Some Information about Broadcasting Immanuel’s Worship Services

Immanuel broadcasts our 8:15 AM Worship on three local cable access providers. Residents who subscribe to cable services can watch the service (at various times) on their local cable access channel. If you are having problems with receiving the services, here is contact information for the three companies that serve our greater area.

Webster Cable Access (Mike Auger) 585-872-6277; Penfield Cable 585-340-8661; Finger Lakes Cable (Justin Baker) 585-394-9444.

We have also learned that some in our community were having difficulty with the local cable access channel. It now seems that older television sets need a converter/adapter. Contact your cable provider for this.

Organ Concert at Immanuel

On January 31 2015, Immanuel will host a

concert featuring Amanda and several other Eastman organists. The concert is given in order to help raise money for EROI (Eastman-Rochester Organ Initiative) so that Eastman organ students can continue to benefit from the festivals, European trips, masterclasses, concerts, and lectures that the fund provides. This year's EROI presents an Organ and Film Festival on October 23-26. This special event features several iconic silent films of the early 1900s with live accompaniment on a variety of organs in Rochester. Concerts include Prof. Edoardo Bellotti accompanying short films at the Memorial Art Gallery, Tom Trenney performing to Speedy from 1928, a contemporary collaboration with the Christ Church Schola Cantorum improvising to the silent classic La Passion de Jeanne d'Arc, and a special performance by Philip Carli on the Wurlitzer Theatre Organ in the Eisenhart Auditorium at the Rochester Museum and Science Center. Opportunities to hear professional live organ accompaniment to silent films are extremely rare, so be sure to mark your calendar for October 23-26! Join us for an exciting weekend filled with great instruments, great performers, and great films! For more information on how you can get tickets to these and other EROI events, please visit our website: esm.rochester.edu/organ/eroi/ or find us on Facebook: EROI 2014.

SCHOOL KITS ASSEMBLED!

Thank you for the items you brought in for the school kits. We have assembled 81 kits which will be taken to the Lutheran World Relief warehouse in Baltimore in late November for distribution as needed. We came close to meeting our goal of 100 school kits, 81 children will have tools to help them learn - and we can start collecting for NEXT year in the hope that we CAN reach a goal of 100 school kits!!!!

Pastor Doreen Mwanga's Visit

When I travel I keep a journal which is shared with those at home - "Armchair Roadtrippers". Yesterday I "traveled" right here in Rochester with Pr. Doreen Mwanga who lives in Zambia and is here in the US for a three-month stay with a congregation in Bloomington, IL. She came to Rochester as Senior Pastor Chana's representative to the installation of Bishop John Macholz and stayed with Mary and George Iverson for the weekend, attending not only the installation but also our Sunday morning services, God's Work, Our Hands, and the South Wedge Mis-sion service Sunday evening. She and I spent Mon-day together visiting the zoo and Strong Museum and then she flew back to Bloomington. Pr. Doreen was born and raised in Lukasa, the capitol of Zambia. She now lives in a very rural area of the country and has been a pastor in that area for seven years. When she first went there she ques-tioned why she was sent - it was difficult for her to reach some of the people with God's love, but she has seen that changes have come to many there. The village she lives in is remote - she must walk 12 kilo-meters to church (you can do the math - I think it is about 8 miles!) and there is no bus line. She has a small solar panel which gives her electricity but she has no refrigeration and of course no TV! There is a small store in the village but for groceries she walks 12 km to a bus line - and then after she shops, walks back from the bus with her food! She does that monthly. She does have chickens which are "free-range" and eats eggs they lay and occasionally one of the chickens :). She has a daughter and also is raising her sister's grandchildren - her sister had died and I do not remember what happened to the children's par-ents, but the children are young - 5 and 7 or 8 years old. Pr. Doreen feels strongly that because she has been given the opportunity to come here, she should be learning and doing much to take back to Zambia for the church there. She wants to see as much as she can about how we do things here, and she said they have little in the way of written materials to study the Bible. She told me that her grandmother said that one can always learn something from other people and other experiences - book learning is not the only way to learn - so she observes and tries to remember all that she sees. We went to the Zoo and at the first photo op - the entrance sign - she found out that her camera's battery was low. We checked in the gift shop and they did not have that type of battery, so I took all the pictures she wanted - over 200 of them!! She will have a large picture album of every animal, every sign, fauna and flora, and touristy photo ops!!! Most

of the animals were out and we saw several being fed. The baboons in the Africa exhibit put on quite a show for us - several of them were quite angry with a trou-ble-maker and there was lots of chasing and shoving and screaming!! And the tamarinds were climbing and bouncing all over their home! The garden flow-ers were in full bloom and several of them Pr. Doreen said were in the bush in Zambia. We drove through the city to Strong Museum and had a Personal Pan Pizza for lunch in their cafete-ria - both of us were hungry after several hours in the glorious weather at the Zoo! We had only an hour or so at Strong because of her flight schedule, so we made good use of the time by trying out the Dance! Dance! machine (did poorly, and so did the attendant we asked to help us!!), playing the chime tubes, mak-ing kaleidoscopes with acrylic shapes, walking through the Arcade games, playing ice hockey, and more photo ops - as a Superhero lifting a huge weight, climbing the rock wall, moving a giant's arms, sitting in Cinderella's pumpkin coach, riding a horse on the merry-go-round. Pr. Doreen laughed and giggled her way through play at the Museum! We ended with a visit to the Butterfly Pavilion which was amazing - the beauty of the gardens and the butter-flies is very peaceful. And we were off to the airport to get through check-in and say goodbye. We may never meet again, but what a joy for me to spend the day with Pr. Doreen and feel as if I had "traveled" for a short time to Zambia! Joyfully submitted by Marguerite Manning

IMMANUEL PRAYS…

Prayer is a central part of Christian life. Through prayer we connect with God and raise up joys and celebrations, concerns and sorrows. Through prayer we listen to God and open ourselves to God’s will in

life. As Christians we pray not only for ourselves, we also pray for others and for the mission of the church. We all know the comfort that comes when we know someone has lifted us in prayer. When we lift up others, it brings us closer to each other and to God.

At Immanuel we have two prayer chains – one is via email; the other by telephone. If you would like to be a part of Immanuel Prays…, please contact the church office with either your email address or telephone number. We will add you to the prayer chain.

If you have a need or a joy to share, you can email the church ([email protected]) or call 585-872-5180 and this will be shared with those on the prayer chain.
