A PROVEN INTERNATIONAL TRACK-RECORD IN LARGE EMERGING COUNTRIES
BANGABANDHU BRIDGE - BANGLADESH
The bridge is 5km long and the scope of works included the monitoring, operation and maintenance of the flood protection embankments, extensive guide bunds, river training works and 30 km of approach roads.
The crossing was opened to traffic in June 1998 following a 5-year construction programme.
Intertoll secured the work by obtaining the highest technical rating and the best financial offer.
Intertoll Africa has extensive experience in large emerging countries across Asia, South America and Africa spanning over 30 years – examples include:
LINHA AMARELA (YELLOW LINE) - RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL
The Linha Amarela (Yellow Line) is a 22km long three lane, dual carriageway motorway linking two areas of the city of Rio de Janeiro. The project necessitated the construction of five tunnels, including one of 2,2km length and one false tunnel, nine viaducts of concrete and steel construction. The road was opened to traffic in December 1997 and has one mainline plaza situated in the Agua Santa area comprising 20 lanes of which the centre seven are bi-directional and the outer two are configured for high speed electronic toll collection.
NOIDA TOLL BRIDGE - DELHI, INDIA
The DND Flyway is a vital bridge linking Delhi and Noida (New Okhla Industrial Development Authority), located in states separated by the Yamuna River. The Flyway includes an 8-lane motorway, 500m long bridge, including pedestrian and bicycle lanes, operation and maintenance facilities, a mainline toll plaza, elevated interchanges and river training works. The Average Daily Traffic is approximately 40 000 vehicles per day, of which approximately 30% are motorcycles.
Intertoll was appointed to:• provide toll facility design consulting expertise• design, supply and install toll collection equipment according to the traffic requirements• supervise the construction of the toll facilities on behalf of its client• operate the toll facilities• maintain the entire facility• perform traffic management and emergency normalisation.
The Average Daily Traffic through the plaza is 85 000 vehicles of which 20% use Electronic Toll Collection (ETC) methods. The route offers a significant reduction in travelling distance and time over existing alternative routes and the traffic is strongly commuter and tidal in nature.

POLAND - HUNGARY
The Intertoll Group has been active in Central and Eastern Europe since 1996 where it is invested in and operates close to 400 kilometres of toll roads through four contracts.
In Poland, Intertoll is invested (15%) in the Concession which financed and currently operates the A1 Phase 2 Motorway south between Nowe Marzy and Torun until 2028. Intertoll Polska (100% Intertoll Europe ZRt. affiliate) is in charge of the operation and maintenance of the motorway as well as the manual toll collection and a Total number of 39 toll lanes. The operations include 51 bridge structures including 2 river bridges of 500 m and 1000 m.
In Hungary, Intertoll is also a co-shareholder and the Operator for the M5 Highway project since 1994 until 2028. The Toll Road stretches 130 km from Budapest, south-east towards the border with Serbia and Romania and Average Daily Traffic is around 15 500 vehicles per day with approximately 15% heavy vehicles.
Intertoll provides the full spectrum of toll related project management services – namely:• Preliminary planning.• Detail design of the toll infrastructure.• Technical specifications and tenders for the equipment and toll facility construction.• Site supervision and supply and installation of the control equipment • Equipment inspection, testing and commissioning after installation.
The road is equipped with the latest state of the art electronic toll collection equipment, which virtually eliminates fraud, and enhances control and equipment maintenance. The equipment can accommodate manual lanes, automatic lanes and ETC (Electronic Toll Collection).

THE BENCHMARK OPERATOR IN AFRICA
Intertoll currently operates four national toll roads over 800 kilometres in South Africa in partnership with SANRAL and 840 kilometres in partnership with ZINARA in Zimbabwe and is now the leading independent motorway operator in the region. Furthermore, Intertoll provides advisory services to a private Consortium for a large bridge design-build-operate-finance project in Nigeria.

A UNIQUE APPROACH TO PARTNERSHIP – THE INFRALINK PROJECT IN ZIMBABWE
Intertoll Africa prides itself in developing bespoke solutions to its clients’ needs by tapping into its broad international experience, its network of partnering financial institutions, a fiercely-rooted Group Five “can-do” attitude and the constant search for alignment of interests with its clients in developing lasting, value-for-money solutions. To support its growth on the Continent, Intertoll Africa developed its own collection system to enhance and mitigate the risk arising from poorly performing toll-systems-supply subcontractors. The Toll Collection System was developed to the CTROM specification used in South Africa but is also adaptable for use in countries beyond the borders of South Africa to meet various levels of functionality and affordability.

Intertoll Africa was instrumental in the implementation of the tolling strategy for the Infralink Phase 1 project, which entailed the rehabilitation of the 822 km national Plumtree–Harare–Mutare highway (east-to-west corridor) and the construction of nine toll plazas equipped with the Intertoll Toll Collection System to replace the country’s ticket based manual toll collection system.
Group Five Civil Engineering and Intertoll Africa were appointed as EPC Contractor and O&M Contractor respectively for the project which is a joint project undertaken by Group Five and the Zimbabwe National Road Administration (Zinara) under a special purpose company called Infralink. Infralink is a Special Purpose Vehicle (SPV) created by Zinara (70%) and Group Five (30%). Intertoll served as the advisor on Plaza Designs, Toll Audit System, Electricity Supply and other related operations.

Intertoll Africa has embarked on expanding its services and operations in both West and East Africa – reaching out to Anglophone and Francophone countries.
Intertoll Africa has been actively engaging with members of the African Road Maintenance Funds Association (ARMFA/AFERA) Road Funds and Roads Agencies across the Continent, to showcase its wide range of capabilities and services.
INTERTOLL TOLL PLAZA PILOT PROGRAM
This program aims to assist road funds and administrators collect toll fees in an effective and efficient manner and to ensure that leakages are stemmed. Intertoll’s process to achieve this goad entails managing the following scope of services as a one-stop:-• Traffic Review and Traffic Counts • Preparation of the Toll Strategy for the route• Design and construction of Toll Plazas • Toll Equipment Supply• Fully Underwritten Funding Solution • Toll Road Operations & Maintenance
Three main options of toll plaza facilities are currently available to be implemented under this Programme, based on the traffic processed and the funding available:
• Type A - Full specification toll lane area and administration building (6 Months construction)
• Type B - Value-engineered solution to reduce capital expenditure and life-cycle costs for projects sensitive to traffic volumes, toll fee tariffs and under affordability constraint or project-financed. (4 Months construction)
• Type C - A functionally-sound temporary tolling solution is also available from Intertoll Africa for early collection of tolls ahead of and during the design and construction phase of a permanent Type A or B toll plaza. Type C is also well-suited as a permanent solution for secondary network or low-traffic roads.
Because of its operational mindset, Intertoll Africa develops solutions which take into account the full life-cycle costs of the total tolling solution – toll plazas and toll systems included. Unlike most tolling consultants or toll collection equipment (TCE) firms, with Intertoll Africa, advisory services, design specifications and toll systems output specifications are informed by 30-years operationally-driven experience and are are part of a holistic solution!
