WHITLEY AUDITORIUM

INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS HEADED TO TBS: HOST FAMILIES NEEDED

In January 2015, The Burlington School will be hosting 20 South Korean High school students from Gwacheon City, South Korea.

Gwacheon City is a sister city with Burlington, and we are very excited to host their students.

The Korean students will be here for 14 days as part of a cultural exchange experience. The idea of the exchange program is to further their English language skills and for them to experience true American culture. They will attend classes here at TBS with our high

school students, and will be doing some traveling while they are here.

We are looking for ten current TBS families to serve as hosts to our international guests. The visiting students are mostly sophomores and juniors and will be arriving on Friday, January 9th and departing on Friday, January 23rd. Interested in hosting two students?

Please contact Ronnie Wall directly at [email protected].

IT’S THE MOST DE-LI-CIOUS TIME OF THE YEAR!

Reminder: THIS Friday, December 19 is the Traditions Celebration for all Middle School and Upper School students. Dress is holiday festive, food drop off is on the Davis Street campus by 11 am and lunch is at 12:30 pm. MS students should be picked up on the Davis St. campus at 3 pm and US students will be dismissed at 3:30 pm. After lunch, we will gather together in the Gathering Space to host our very first Celebration of Traditions. Here are the details:

Who: All MS and US students and advisors

What: Traditions Luncheon and Celebration

When: Friday, December 19, 12:30 pm-end of the school day. Meal begins at 12:30 pm, celebration begins around 1:30 pm.

Where: Davis Street Gym and Gathering Space

Why: To celebrate community

How: Middle School students will be bused from Greenwood Terrace campus to the Davis Street campus at noon. They will not return to the GT campus. Middle School students should be picked up in the pick up line out front on the DS campus (please do not park) at 3:00 pm. (Extended Day students will be transported back to GT via staff vehicle.) Upper School students will be picked up at their regular dismissal time of 3:30pm.

Each student has signed up for a food or beverage item they will bring. Please support your student when they request your help with food or materials for their advisory presentation. We wouldn't be able to host this activity without your help! Each item should feed approximately 15 so that everyone has a chance to try new things. (If your item is gluten free or vegan, please label accordingly.)

Food and beverages may be dropped off on the Davis Street Campus on Friday morning, Dec. 19 between 7:30-11:30. The PA volunteers will help collect those items from you or your student that morning. Please label all non-disposable serving dishes and utensils.

All food items that need refrigeration should come in coolers, all food items that need to be heated should come in crock-pots.

Our awesome Parents Association has generously donated all paper products and utensils.

Lunch will be served at 12:30pm.

Page 5: THE ORACLE - Edl · PDF fileTHE ORACLE A WEEKLY NEWSLETTER FOR PARENTS AND FAMILIES OF Issue 17, Week of December 16

Celebration of Traditions will begin at 1:30pm in the Gathering Space. This will be done in their advisory groups and will be interactive activities designed by each advisory group to reflect some of their family or holiday traditions.

A few extra notes:

Do not order MyHotLunchBox for your Middle or Upper School student on 12/19. It will only be available for delivery to Lower School students.

Your child should be sending home a reminder via email early next week about the food item they have offered to bring.

If you have questions about what your son/daughter offered, please contact your child's advisor via email. All other questions about the event should be e-mailed to Leslie Blank at [email protected]

Dress for the day will be holiday festive. Remember: your students will be active during the celebration.

Use the front driveway at the Davis Street campus to pick up Middle School students. They will be lined up outside (weather permitting) similar to their pick up at the Greenwood Terrace campus at 3:00 pm.

A NOTE FROM EXTENDED DAY: Do you have last minute shopping to do? Do you want to get that holiday manicure/ spa treatment in peace? How about just to get the kids out of the house before the hustle and bustle of the holidays really begins. Extended Day is now accepting drop-ins for December 22nd and 23rd. They are open from 7:20 am until 6:00pm both days and the cost is $50 whether you need one hour or ten. Please send a morning snack and a lunch. If interested please contact Trinity Taylor at [email protected]. Advanced notice is appreciated but drop-ins are certainly welcomed. TBS Extended Day is open to the public for this opportunity as well.

WE’RE ALL ON THE ADMISSIONS TEAM! BRING A FRIEND TO SCHOOL DAY IS JANUARY 20

TBS is excited to announce the return of Bring a Friend to School Day on January 20, 2015 for all grade levels Preschool 3 - 12th grade. Our TBS students can each bring one friend from another school to shadow them for the day - seeing all that our school has to offer first hand. We will welcome our visiting students at 8:00 am and plan on feeding both the host and visiting students a pizza lunch, with dismissal at 12:30 pm. Bring a Friend to School Day is an insightful opportunity to tell others about TBS and bring in new families. The date was intentionally set as a day when the local school system is off. Over the winter break, please spread the word to others and register your child and their friend using the link below: http://goo.gl/forms/dWKcc9Ml2M Get a jump-start on registration while you can – the deadline for submissions will approach quickly after we return from our Holiday Break. -Mr. Ronnie Wall, Director of Admissions

NOTES FROM COMMUNITY LIFE: Thank you to all those who retrieved their lost and found items. The remaining items were donated yesterday. Also, The Greenwood Terrace campus students will be doing a Pledge activity in February that will require shoeboxes or tissue boxes that are open on the top. If you have any boxes that fit these descriptions that were going to be recycled, please hold on to them over the holidays and send them in to school in January. We will be collecting them at that time. -Leslie Blank, Community Life Facilitator, School Counselor

HAPPY HOLIDAYS FROM THE BURLINGTON SCHOOL! Pictured above: Members of TBS Girl Talk pose with advisor and Director of College Counseling Ashley Pearson. They celebrated the entire Upper School effort of compiling over 70 stockings packed full with toiletries for men in the Piedmont Rescue Mission! We have another accomplishment to celebrate prior to holiday break – Ms. Pearson was awarded with Honorary Membership to the Carolinas Association of Collegiate Registrars and Admissions Officers (CACRAO), which is a professional organization for all of South Carolina and North Carolina. The President of the Association gave a glowing recommendation about Pearson’s credentials, as well. Congratulations, Ms. Pearson!
