SIZE DEFINITIONS:

PF = Previously flowered & fully mature Blooming Size plants (multi-floral minis can flower more than once a year) B/F = Currently in bud and/or in flower (one spike unless otherwise noted) B = In bud (one spike unless otherwise noted) SP = In spike, just initiating to medium spike stage (one spike unless otherwise noted) BS = Blooming size (should flower in season) NBS = Near blooming size (approximately 1 year to flowering in season) S = about 2-3 years to first flowering

Please Note: Since our stock quantities are changing rapidly due to the current abundance of Covid19 mail orders,

we are no longer noting quantities available on most stock since it can vary from one day to the next ~ this also helps avoid disappointment for everyone if we sell out of certain plants quickly.

In case we are sold out of an orchid you might want, we can always suggest a substitute of something very similar.

PHAL SPECIES:

Most of our Phalaenopsis species are from Taiwan & reflect much improved forms & colors, having been sibbed or selfed using very select parents. Species like Phal. bellina, violacea, venosa, speciosa, gigantea, viridis and javanica are extremely

slow to reach maturity & can be easily lost as small seedlings so we’re only offering well-established Near Blooming or Blooming Size plants. As a result of their extra years to reach maturity, the pricing on these plants is higher than is usual for

the quicker growing & more readily available Phal. species.

Phal. aphrodite subsp. formosana

‘A09001’ (4N)

(TETRAPLOID FORM of Species)

A dynamite tetraploid form of this classic form of all Phal. species ! This

clone is producing more compact leaves and much larger flowers than is typical

for this subspecies of aphrodite. Its fuller form & beautifully round flowers with the

petals almost touching carries heavy substance & produces a much longer-lasting display with a smaller leaf span than is typical for this species. And the bonus to this particular 4N strain is their naturally & gracefully cascading spikes with the flowers displayed to perfection,

making for a stunning display !

Phal. violacea fma. indigo

(Sib of ‘US’ x ‘JH’)

An exciting new sibbing of the Indigo

form which was created using two select Indigo strains of Phal. violacea indigo

and which has produced some sensational progeny ! This new

generation is the result of a careful selection of its parents based on their

increased vigor and robust root systems, building on HP Norton & Krull Smith’s original strains of Indigo violaceas.

Beautiful richly colored fragrant flowers become their most intense indigo color in

slightly cooler & brighter conditions in the spring & fall. What we love about this

sibbing is the attractively taller spikes creating a perfectly colorful & fragrant

presentation. Like all Phal. violaceas, if their flower spikes remain green, do not remove them since they will continue to

add buds right into the fall & at their next flowering in addition to creating a new

spike or two !

Endemic to Myanmar, Thailand, Borneo & Sumatra, this rarely available & fragrant

warm growing waxy species flowers from spring into the summer ! We’ve already flowered a couple from this sib cross &

their flower size & crisp well-defined marks have been sensational. This

species carries horizontal to erect 4+” long spikes, producing over five 1 ½-2”

waxy flowers. Light & temperature during bud/flower formation can affect

the degree of its flower color intensity & this will also vary according to its

particular bloom season. The flower spikes can remain green from one

flowering to the next, continuing to add buds in addition to making additional

new spikes in season !

PHALAENOPSIS HYBRIDS

Most of these clones are the result of cutting-edge Taiwanese breeding programs & are plants we’ve hand-selected from some of the most forward-thinking nurseries during our annual trips to Taiwan to judge their TIOS Orchid Show.

Many of the hybrids with a heavy Harlequin influence or red, yellow or orange in their breeding will show their boldest and most vivid colors when bloomed under cooler temperatures & brighter light during the fall & winter.

MULTI-FLORAL MINIS & MULTI-FLORAL MIDIS (including Harlequins & Splash-Petals):

Much to our amazement, many of our Minis & Midis have already spiked again for the second time this year ! This tendency

to flower more frequently is due in large part to today’s select breeding using more vigorous cutting-edge parents. *** We’re defining “MULTI-FLORAL MIDI” as those that produce flowers that are around 2 ½” to 3” in size.

Phal. Fuller’s Gold Stripe

’A09168’

Producing flowers slightly larger in size

(2 ½”) than the OX clone, its color is more intense due to a heavier overlay of the

red candy striping, giving the appearance of orange ! These are vigorously growing

plants as first bloomers with nice compact leaf spans. A definite step up

from the older hybrid of Baldan’s Kaleidoscope without the downside of that hybrid’s large flowers, super tall

spikes & huge leaf spans !

floral, brings floriferousness to this hybrid while Sogo Golden, a waxy yellow novelty flower, adds its heavy substance,

also giving the flowers their beautiful sunset/salmon color. As with many of

this type of breeding, cooler temperatures & brighter light produce an

even more intense flower color. A sensational & extremely long-lasting

Lightly kissed with a touch of harlequin

perfection ! Both parents are multi-floral miniatures, their flower size being under

2.5” & this clone can produce quite a floriferous display. Light & temperature differences as the buds form, or the time of year, can influence the intensity of its

harlequin accents so often no two flowers may be exactly identical,

always a fun surprise !

Violin is remarkably different from other clones of this hybrid with a strong

doubled-up harlequin influence coming from both parents. The pollen parent,

Chia E Yenlin, is further intensified by the addition of even more harlequin influence

from its Chian Xen Violin parentage ! This is a real little stunner with elegantly tall spikes over nice compact leaf spans.

As first bloomers they had already produced two branching spikes & after

being cut back just 5 months ago, they’re already spiking again. As they reach full maturity we’re expecting them to show

around 2 ½”in size, beautifully presented on branching cascading spikes. The

harlequin spotting pattern has fused to a rich blackened-burgundy and is quite a dramatic contrast against the pink and

white background of the flower. While in just 2.7” pots, our first group of these

had already flowered once with 2 branching spikes & just 4 months later

their flowering will be sensationally branched. Can flower twice a year !

Creating a virtual cloud of soft yellow-

to the starry shape which is all too common in other yellow multi-floral

miniatures. In addition, its pollen parent, Brother Lawrence, adds substance to the

flowers providing a longer-lasting display. And the pod parent, Timothy

Christopher, contributes to its amazing floriferousness. These flowered for the first time in just 2 ½” pots. As pictured

on the top left from the Taiwan Show, it’s also capable of producing basal keikis from a fully mature mother plant which,

“BIG LIP” & PELORIC HYBRIDS:

One of the most important factors in today’s “Big Lip” breeding is a large flat lip that is almost identical to the petals ! We have seen some pretty poor hybrids in this new line of breeding over the past 2-3 years, with their “big lips” either cupped or

crippled, or with the “lip” dropping so far down from the other segments of the flower that you could drive a truck right through it ! The clones we choose to carry must have a beautiful broad flat lip tucked right up into the flower itself so it gives the definite impression of a 3-petal ~ or 3-lip ~ flower. There have been only a few so far that meet those standards for us, &

we’re excited to be able to share some of them with everyone.

SUPER-MINIS ~ PERFECT FOR SPACE-CHALLENGED COLLECTIONS:

These smaller growing Phalaenopsis are ideal for tucking into any space-challenged collection. Their leaf spans are much smaller than those of multi-floral miniatures, & they produce multitudes of smaller charming flowers. Many have been bred from smaller flowering or growing Phalaenopsis species like Phal. lobbii, parishii & pulcherrima ~ and they usually flower

more than once a year, with many from this type of breeding continuing to add additional buds & flowers on previously bloomed spikes while continuing to add an additional new spike or two.

As we add more of these to our collection, we’ll update their listings here.

WAXY ~ OFTEN FRAGRANT ~ BRIGHTLY-COLORED NOVELTIES:

This group of Waxy Novelties includes limited Stem Props & Poly Props from Taiwan. As mentioned under Phal. species, due

to the heavy influence of the slower-growing species of Phal. bellina, violacea, lueddemanniana, amboinensis & venosa in their breeding backgrounds, it often takes an additional year or two for these hybrids to reach flowering size as opposed to a standard Phalaenopsis. But once they do, they’re well worth the wait for their vivid color, thick long-lasting waxy flowers & amazing fragrances. They also have a tendency to produce basal keikis from the mother plant for the ultimate presentation.

In addition, many of these Novelty-type hybrids improve even more in their color intensity and size while adding fuller form on their 2

nd & 3

rd flowerings. They will often retain previously flowered green spikes, continuing to add more buds to them, while

still producing additional spikes ~ within a couple of years these plants can be surrounded with multiple spikes in full flower for a sensational show to please all the senses !

OF SPECIAL NOTE: With many of the blue, red or orange novelties, differences in light & temperature at various times of the

year can cause some variation in the flower color and/or intensity of their markings. Under warmer temperatures & more shaded conditions in the summer, many red novelty-type hybrids with yellow or orange in their breeding background will

flower showing more of the influence of those colors. Under cooler temperatures & brighter light in the fall to winter months, the red pigment in the flowers is more strongly expressed resulting in solid to nearly solid red flowers. Plus, many of the

Novelty-type hybrids with Phal. bellina and/or violacea in their breeding background improve in color intensity and size, with even fuller form, on their 2

nd & 3

MICRO-MINIS ~ PERFECT FOR SPACE-CHALLENGED COLLECTIONS:

These smaller growing Phalaenopsis are ideal for tucking into any space-challenged collection. Their leaf spans are much smaller than those of multi-floral miniatures & they produce multitudes of smaller charming flowers. Many have been bred

from smaller growing Phalaenopsis species like Phal. lobbii, parishii & pulcherrima ~ and they usually flower more than once a year, with many from this type of breeding continuing to add additional buds & flowers on previously bloomed spikes while

continuing to add a new spike or two. As we add more of these to our collection, we’ll update their listings here.

SELECT ONE-OF-A-KIND NOVELTY SEEDLINGS:

Many of our novelty or select seedlings flowered for the first time for us this spring into fall ~ and with Phal. bellina in the background of many, as first bloomers they will initially produce only 1-3 flowers on their first spikes. This type of breeding

is extremely slow to reach flowering-size maturity due to the heavy influence of the slower-growing & fragrant waxy Phal. species in their breeding background.

With these waxy novelties, we leave any still-green spikes on the plants since they will most likely add more buds to these spikes in addition to producing new spikes at their next flowering. Some people choose to remove the initial spikes & give

the energy back to the plant. However, we’ve never noticed (with this novelty-type breeding) that it makes much difference in the overall vigor of the plant since their parentage carries the habit of retaining older spikes. Also, their flower form, color

and size improve enormously with their 2nd

& 3rd

flowerings. But ~ the real bonus to owning a One-of-a-Kind plant is that you can give it your own clonal name !

As they flower we number & photograph each one for sale ~ they’ll be showcased on our monthly Mail Order Lists in addition

to being shared on our Facebook page & when available, on the Facebook page of Orchids, Trade & Sale. Keep your eyes open for these postings since once released, these select plants often sell quickly.

OTHER GENERA WHICH GROW & FLOWER HAPPILY UNDER PHALAENOPSIS CONDITIONS

MINIATURE VANDACEOUS:

All these species & hybrids grow & flower easily WITH our Phals under the same light & temperature conditions since they are miniature growers, requiring much lower light than their larger-growing & flowering cousins. We’re growing them in small plastic baskets, with just a little media in the bottom of each basket, to allow their roots to dry slightly between

waterings. We then rest the rims of these little baskets onto the rims of deep rose pots, allowing the roots to continue to grow down from the basket into the empty bottom of the rose pot. This is our own approach to the growing method of “collaring” which the Vandaceous seem to love. These are mostly miniature ~ with a few compact ~ growing species & hybrids, many of which will readily form basal keikis to become beautiful specimen miniatures producing multitudes of spikes at the same time on all of their mature growths. And many of them are also delightfully FRAGRANT !

OTHER GENERA ~ ONCIDINAE & MISC SPECIES & HYBRIDS:

All the plants listed below grow & flower easily WITH our Phals under the same light & temperature conditions since many are miniature growing species or hybrids, requiring much lower light than their larger cousins – they can put on quite a show for

their compact size ! In addition, most of our Oncidinae can also be grown under intermediate conditions with bright Phalaenopsis light.

As a side note, all the Oncidinae are growing in New Zealand moss which they seem to love ~ we never would have believed they would do so beautifully in this medium ! The moss not only helps maintain a nice even moisture in the pot, but it also

helps the plant retain plumper pseudobulbs while adding to the vigor of the plant’s new growths. We’ve been amazed at the difference the moss makes for all these plants as opposed to growing them in a bark mix.

As you will see, we’re extremely fond of the Brassia-type Oncidinae from this section of the Oncidium family, choosing to carry many of its hybrids, both miniatures and standards, for their truly exotic displays of long-lasting waxy fragrant flowers ~

they simply redefine the word “exotic” for us.

See our “Bench Clearing Specials” on plants which are now maturing their new growths for spiking in the next month or two.

Bnfd. Gilded Tower

’Mystic Maze’ HCC/AOS

(Summit x Gilded Urchin)

This hybrid’s dramatic color contrast is quite extraordinary, rich golden-yellow flowers accented with chocolate brown blotches ! And as the perfect finishing

accent, its golden-yellow lip is beautifully marked with bold barring of rusty

chestnut brown. The flowers can reach 4” in size with a fully mature plant capable of producing more than 15

flowers on each beautifully arching spike. Unlike many of the more common

Oncidinae, this hybrid’s heavy substance flowers mean a much longer lasting display of its exotic presentation !

Another clone of this fabulous hybrid that we love, this clone bearing light olive

green flowers accented with chocolate brown blotches. This particular clone is

not often available & unlike the clone ‘Mystic Maze’ (above), its rich yellow lip is just lightly dotted with rusty chestnut brown at its base. Its flowers can also

reach 4” in size with a fully mature plant capable of producing more than 15

flowers per beautifully cascading spike & often producing two fabulous spikes per fully mature pseudobulb. Unlike many of the more commonly available members

of the Oncidium family, this hybrid’s heavy substance flowers mean a much

Brsdm. Nittany Gold

‘Dr. John’ AM/AOS

(Brassia verrucosa x Onc. ghiesbreghtianum)

Of all the intergeneric Oncidium hybrids we’ve grown & flowered, this one is quite simply a “weed” ! Just as soon as one

spike has finished flowering, new flowering pseudobulbs are forming, each

one spiking & flowering within 2-3 months. Rich lemon yellow 2.5” flowers

with chocolate accents grace this adorable miniature member of the

Oncidium family, its presentation like an extremely charming petite Brassia verrucosa ! When fully mature, it’s

capable of producing multiple spikes of over 12 flowers on each, beautifully

presented on gently cascading spikes ~ all on a plant standing just 11” tall.

We’ve had these flower readily 2-3 times a year for us. Perfect for those who are

space-challenged thanks to its miniature stature ~ ideal for windowsill & under-

lights growing !

Brilliant orange Brassia-type 2 ½” flowers are gracefully displayed just above its

miniature 11” foliage for a stunning presentation ! These plants were first

bloomers but in another year or two, with multiple new growths & spikes, will be an

outstanding shot of color in any collection. As a bonus, they produce a sweet citrus-like fragrance & can flower twice a year or more. At every show we

sell out of these within the first two hours thanks to their miniature habit & brilliant orange color. And, yes, because it’s a

miniature, it does bloom at least 2 times a year or more. A great & very compact grower with amazingly vivid color & a

delightful fragrance !

Chysis limminghei

(MINI Species)

An adorable species, endemic to Mexico, which just loves warm to hot conditions ! When each new growth matures, it sends

out a pendulous, robust inflorescence bearing fragrant, waxy, long-lasting

flowers up to 3” in size. Large showy flowers can literally dwarf the miniature

size of the plant and pseudobulbs. We’ve found that this little species is amazingly

easy to grow & flower under Phalaenopsis conditions. The leaves will drop in the fall after flowering, at which point we reduce watering & fertilizing

through the winter, but we do recommend keeping the medium damp to

avoid shriveling its pseudobulbs. With the onset of new growth in the spring, we resume normal watering/fertilizing. This species does not like to be repotted with any great frequency so we wait until new growths are literally overflowing the pot to shift them up to the next larger size.

Clowesetum Rebecca Express ‘M’

(Cl. Rebecca Northen x Ctsm. expansum)

Easily grown under Phalaenopsis conditions, this is one outrageous new

green-flowered hybrid mating the best of two worlds ~ the green of expansum enhanced by the frilly lip of Rebecca

Northen ! Its wonderful fragrance comes from both parents with Ctsm. Rebecca Northen, which smells like grapefruit, combined with the sweet fragrance of Ctsm. expansum. Allow them to dry

slightly between waterings while in active growth & flowering. After they’ve lost their leaves & have finished flowering, reduce water & fertilizer, keeping the medium just damp enough to avoid

shriveling of their pseudobulbs. At the onset of new growth, accompanied by new roots, resume normal watering & fertilizing. One of the most exotic of

exotics !

Fredclarkeara After Dark

’Sunset Valley Orchids’ FCC/AOS

(Mo. Painted Desert x Ctsm. Donna Wise)

Easily grown under Phalaenopsis conditions, this particular clone of

Fredclarkeara After Dark produces tawny green flowers, heavily spotted maroon over all ! Its heavy substance flowers

with a waxy texture lead to a long-lasting display. In 2005 this plant was the

recipient of the Merritt W. Huntington Award as the most outstanding plant that

had been granted an FCC/AOS. When awarded with its FCC, it was vigorously displaying 48 flowers on three pendant inflorescences, all emerging from just one pseudobulb ! A great exhibit plant and a stunner when in flower. These

plants are now just completing their new leafy growths in preparation for

fall/winter flowering.

Of special note: We shifted our exhibit plants of Fredclarkeara into New Zealand

moss as an experiment to keep the deciduous growths plump & have noted that its even moisture supply helps keep the older pseudobulbs from desiccating while giving increased vigor to the new growths. We have since moved all our

stock of this type into NZ Moss & they’re happily thriving !

Maxillaria tenuifolia

‘Yamada’ AM/AOS

(Yellow form of Species)

The beloved ‘Coconut Orchid’, aptly named for its coconut fragrance, in the

more rare rich yellow form ! A compact grower, it can become a specimen in a short period of time due to its ease of

growth. And its grass like foliage makes it attractive, even when not in flower. A May – July bloomer, these plants have

just matured their new growths & are now producing their flowers from spikes

which emerge from the base of each new pseudobulb. Keep them moist enough to

maintain their plump pseudobulbs & grow under high Phalaenopsis light. Reduce watering & fertilizing slightly

during the winter. Adaptable to a generous range of growing conditions, this is one easy-grower that belongs in

every collection !

Onc. Sweet Sugar

‘Lemon Drop’ HCC/AOS

(now Oncidesa)

(Aloha Iwanaga x Gomesa varicosa)

This is our favorite clone of this hybrid for its concolor electric yellow flowers,

with no other color in the lip, which makes it infinitely more stunning than

other clones of this hybrid ! Capable of producing over sixty flowers & buds with

huge bold 2 ¼” lips on vigorous multi-branching spikes, its heavy substance

satiny flowers provide a long-lasting and amazingly floriferous display. Although its vivid lip is outstanding, we also love

the subtle contrast of its small green petals & sepals. Add to all of that, the plants themselves produce beautiful

round pseudobulbs with very compact leaves standing around 9” tall. We’ve

actually had one plant of this clone last beautifully through two rigorous months of show exhibits & still look as fresh as

the day it opened. This is a true standout to add to any collection !

Thecopus maingayi

(MINIATURE Species)

Endemic to Thailand, Malaysia,

Vietnam & Borneo, this miniature species is just one of two in this genus ! A

hot/warm growing, shade-loving species, found growing in lowland stream valleys, it’s very happy growing under the same

conditions as Phalaenopsis ! Its 1” waxy flowers appear from summer into the fall on inflorescences arising from the base

of each maturing pseudobulb, their cascading spikes being up to 5” long &

bearing up to 10 citrus-fragranced flowers on each. After flowering, if all the

leaves drop off, reduce watering & fertilizing, doing just enough to keep the

flattened pseudobulbs plump. At the onset of new growth with bright new roots in the spring, resume normal

watering & fertilizing. A unique addition to any miniature species collection !

Wilhelmara Pinot Princess

’Scary’

(Rhynchostele bictoniensis x Bratonia Kauai’s Choice)

A great new hybrid combining one of our most favorite “black” Brassia-type

hybrids (Bratonia Kauai’s Choice) with a species parent which is famous for its floriferousness ! Producing the same

dark, almost black, flowers as Bratonia Kauai’s Choice, this hybrid sports a

brilliant red lip as opposed to the white lip of Kauai’s Choice. Showing off with

eye-catching waxy 4-5” flowers, these are unique not only for their almost-black

sepals & petals but also for the surprise of their dramatically contrasting red lips.

(Zelenkoa onusta x Onc. cheirophorum) We just love this newest petite micro-

multitude of small bright yellow flowers on arching, often branching, spikes over

its micro-miniature foliage, the foliage being no more than 3-4” in height. This little charmer is infinitely easier to grow than its species parentage & flowers any time of the year, at least twice a year as its new growths mature.
