WELCOME

Welcome to St Paul’s Cathedral, the Metropolitical Church of the Anglican Province of Victoria and the Cathedral Church of the Diocese of Melbourne. We worship on the traditional lands of the Wurundjeri People of the Kulin nation and we acknowledge and pay our respect to their elders past and present and to Aboriginal people and Torres Strait Islanders with us today.

We are delighted that you are with us this morning: come and worship with us again. Whether you are Anglican, from another Christian Church or another faith tradition, you are warmly welcome to take part in the service. If you want to find out more about the Christian faith, please make yourself known to a member of the clergy after the service.

This booklet gives details of the hymns and special texts for this service. Please sing the hymns and say those parts of the service printed in bold type. Please ensure that mobile phones, pagers, and other electronic devices are switched off.

THE REVEREND KATE PROWD

Kate was baptised and confirmed in the Melbourne Diocese. Half way through her tertiary studies Kate ventured on a year-long sojourn overseas that included a pilgrimage to Walsingham in the UK and the discernment of a vocation to full-time ministry. Kate returned to Australia, finished her arts degree and commenced a theological degree at Trinity College. She was ordained deacon (1986) and priest (1992) during years of intense debate over the ordination of women. Kate served her first curacy at St. Stephen’s Mt. Waverley, and was associate priest in the parishes of St. Agnes’ Black Rock and Holy Trinity Hampton. She was the first school chaplain appointed at Christ Church Grammar School, and later served at Brighton Grammar. Whilst an associate priest, Kate completed a Masters in Clinical Psychology (2013). Her psychology work has included various positions (student health at university, hospital and private practice). Her most recent ministry position was as honorary associate at St. Stephen’s Gardenvale. Kate has combined her dual vocations as priest and psychologist working as an Examining Chaplain and conducting the psychological assessments for ordination aspirants.

Kate is married to Roger, also an Anglican priest. They have 3 daughters, Phoebe, Cordelia and Eleanor.

MUSIC DURING TODAY’S SERVICE

Setting of the Eucharist: Communion Service in A minor Harold Darke (1888-1976)

Sung by: The Choir of St Paul’s Cathedral, directed by Philip Nicholls, Director of Music Organist: Siegfried Franke, Cathedral Organist

THANK YOU

We are most grateful to all those who are assisting today, especially the Staff and Volunteers of the Cathedral, Bellringers, Musicians, Flower Guild, Servers, Sacristan, Vergers, and Welcomers.

THE STRUCTURE OF THE CONSECRATION SERVICE

THE MINISTRY OF THE WORD

We hear readings from both the Old and New Testaments and from one of the four Gospel accounts. The sermon is preached to encourage both the candidate being consecrated and those gathered to support them.

THE PRESENTATION OF THE CANDIDATE The candidate is presented to the Archbishop, who exhorts her and presents her to the people.

THE PRAYERS As part of our prayers we sing a hymn inviting the Holy Spirit to come among us in the consecration.

THE PRAYER OF CONSECRATION During the Prayer of Consecration, the Archbishop thanks God for Christ, our Apostle, High Priest and Shepherd of souls, and that God calls women and men to the ordained ministry. The Archbishop then lays hands on the candidate to invoke the Holy Spirit to equip her for the ministry of a bishop. This laying-on of hands is the principal ritual gesture of consecration. Immediately after the Archbishop has prayed for the candidate, she is given the principal symbol of ministry, the Bible. Bishops are called to witness to the gospel of the resurrection and lordship of Jesus Christ and promote the church’s faith and unity.

THE EUCHARIST The Consecration Service is always set within the Eucharist, also known as the Lord’s Supper.

All communicant members of Christian churches are welcome to join with us in receiving the bread and wine of the Eucharist. If you prefer, you are welcome to come forward and receive a blessing instead.

THE GREETING

The Archbishop introduces the service

There is one body and one Spirit. There is one hope to which we were called;

one Lord, one faith, one baptism, one God and Father of all.

Peace be with you and also with you.

God calls his people to follow Christ, and forms us into a royal priesthood, a holy nation, to declare the wonderful deeds of him who has called us out of darkness into his marvellous light.

The Church is the Body of Christ, the people of God and the dwelling-place of the Holy Spirit. In baptism the whole Church is summoned to witness to God’s love and to work for the coming of his kingdom.

To serve this royal priesthood, God has given particular ministries. Bishops are ordained to be shepherds of Christ’s flock and guardians of the faith of the apostles, proclaiming the gospel of God’s kingdom and leading his people in mission. Obedient to the call of Christ and in the power of the Holy Spirit, they are to gather God’s people and celebrate with them the sacraments of the new covenant.

Thus formed into a single communion of faith and love, the Church in each place and time is united with the Church in every place and time.

THE CONFESSION AND ABSOLUTION

Please sit or kneel. The Deacon leads the people in the confession

Seeing that we are surrounded by this great cloud of witnesses, let us now lay aside every weight, and the sin that clings so closely, and run with perseverance the race that is set before us.

Hebrews 12.1-2

Merciful God, our maker and our judge, we have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, and in what we have failed to do: we have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbours as ourselves; we repent and are sorry for all our sins. Father, forgive us. Strengthen us to love and obey you in newness of life; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Lord Jesus Christ, only Son of the Father, Lord God, Lamb of God, you take away the sin of the world: have mercy on us; you are seated at the right hand of the Father: receive our prayer. Response

For you alone are the Holy One, you alone are the Lord, you alone are the Most High Jesus Christ, with the Holy Spirit, in the glory of God the Father. Response Amen.

THE COLLECT OF THE DAY

Almighty God, you gave to your servant William Tyndale special gifts of grace to understand and teach the truth in Christ Jesus: grant that, enlightened by this teaching, we may know you, the one true God, and Jesus Christ whom you have sent; who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

THE COLLECT FOR THE ORDINATION OF BISHOPS

Almighty God, by your Son Jesus Christ you gave many excellent gifts to your apostles, and commanded them to feed your flock: bless your servant Kate, now called to the order of bishops. So fill her with your truth, and clothe her with holiness, that as a pastor of your Church she may diligently preach your word, and rightly teach your people, to the glory of your name, and the benefit of your Church. We ask this through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

THE MINISTRY OF THE WORD

THE FIRST READING Read by the Ven. Dave Fuller, Archdeacon of the Yarra, Oodthenong Epsicopate

Hear, you mountains, the controversy of the LORD, and you enduring foundations of the earth; for the LORD has a controversy with his people, and he will contend with Israel. ‘O my people, what have I done to you? In what have I wearied you? Answer me! For I brought you up from the land of Egypt, and redeemed you from the house of slavery; and I sent before you Moses, Aaron, and Miriam.

‘With what shall I come before the LORD, and bow myself before God on high? Shall I come before him with burnt-offerings, with calves a year old? Will the LORD be pleased with thousands of rams, with tens of thousands of rivers of oil? Shall I give my firstborn for my transgression, the fruit of my body for the sin of my soul?’ He has told you, O mortal, what is good; and what does the LORD require of you but to do justice, and to love kindness, and to walk humbly with your God?

Micah 6.2-4, 6-8

Hear the word of the Lord, thanks be to God.

THE PSALM: 33.1-11 Please sing the response after the cantor, then as indicated

1 Rejoice in the Lord, you righteous: for it befits the just to praise him. 2 Give the Lord thanks upon the harp: and sing his praise to the lute of ten strings. Response 4 For the word of the Lord is true: and all his works are faithful. 5 He loves righteousness and justice: the earth is filled with the loving-kindness of the Lord. Response 6 By the word of the Lord were the heavens made: and their numberless stars by the breath of his mouth. 7 He gathered the waters of the sea as in a water-skin: and laid up the deep in his treasuries. Response 8 Let the whole earth fear the Lord: and let all the inhabitants of the world stand in awe of him. 9 For he spoke, and it was done: he commanded, and it stood fast. Response

THE SECOND READING Read by Ms Julia Urwin

Therefore, since it is by God’s mercy that we are engaged in this ministry, we do not lose heart. We have renounced the shameful things that one hides; we refuse to practise cunning or to falsify God’s word; but by the open statement of the truth we commend ourselves to the conscience of everyone in the sight of God. And even if our gospel is veiled, it is veiled to those who are perishing. In their case the god of this world has blinded the minds of the unbelievers, to keep them from seeing the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ, who is the image of God. For we do not proclaim ourselves; we proclaim Jesus Christ as Lord and ourselves as your slaves for Jesus’ sake. For it is the God who said, ‘Let light shine out of darkness’, who has shone in our hearts to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ.

But we have this treasure in clay jars, so that it may be made clear that this extraordinary power belongs to God and does not come from us. We are afflicted in every way, but not crushed; perplexed, but not driven to despair; persecuted, but not forsaken; struck down, but not destroyed; always carrying in the body the death of Jesus, so that the life of Jesus may also be made visible in our bodies.

2 Corinthians 4.1-10

Hear the word of the Lord, thanks be to God.

THE GOSPEL READING

Alleluia: alleluia! How lovely is your dwelling place, O Lord of hosts, my heart and my flesh sing for joy to the living God. Ps 84.1,2b Alleluia.

The Lord be with you: and also with you. A reading from the holy Gospel according to St John: Glory to you, Lord Jesus Christ.

15 When they had finished breakfast, Jesus said to Simon Peter, ‘Simon son of John, do you love me more than these?’ He said to him, ‘Yes, Lord; you know that I love you.’ Jesus said to him, ‘Feed my lambs.’ 16A second time he said to him, ‘Simon son of John, do you love me?’ He said to him, ‘Yes, Lord; you know that I love you.’ Jesus said to him, ‘Tend my sheep.’17He said to him the third time, ‘Simon son of John, do you love me?’ Peter felt hurt because he said to him the third time, ‘Do you love me?’ And he said to him, ‘Lord, you know everything; you know that I love you.’ Jesus said to him, ‘Feed my sheep’.

St John 21.15-17

For the Gospel of the Lord, praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ.

THE NICENE CREED

Let us confess the faith of the Church:

We believe in one God, the Father, the almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen.

We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one being with the Father; through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven: was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the virgin Mary, and became truly human.

Page 12: The Ordination and Consecration as a Bishop in the Church ...€¦ · Consecration as a Bishop in the Church of God of The Reverend Catherine Jane Prowd BA(Hons) BA (Hons in Psych)

12

For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end.

We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is worshipped and glorified, who has spoken through the Prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen.

THE LITURGY OF ORDINATION

THE PRESENTATION OF THE CANDIDATE

Please sit. The Right Revd Genieve Blackwell (Assistant Bishop, Marmingatha Episcopate), The Right Revd Kelvin Wright (Retired Bishop of Dunedin, NZ), Ms Roxanne Maule (Vicar’s Warden, St Alban’s in the Parish of Coburg/Pascoe Vale), and Mrs Gill Cameron (former Vicar’s Warden, St Stephen’s Gardenvale) present the candidate to the Archbishop.

Philip, Bishop in the Church of God, we present to you Catherine Jane Prowd to be ordained and consecrated a bishop in the Church of God.

The Archbishop says

I thank you for your presentation. Let the instrument of ordination be read.

The Registrar of the Diocese of Melbourne reads the Letter of Ordination. The candidate faces the Archbishop who addresses her, saying

The Anglican Church of Australia, being an Apostolic Church, receives and retains the Catholic faith, which is grounded in Holy Scripture and expressed in the Creeds, and within its own history, in the Thirty-Nine Articles, in The Book of Common Prayer and in the Ordering of Bishops, Priests and Deacons.

In accordance with the Canons of this Church, I now require you to make your Declaration and Assent to this faith.

Page 13: The Ordination and Consecration as a Bishop in the Church ...€¦ · Consecration as a Bishop in the Church of God of The Reverend Catherine Jane Prowd BA(Hons) BA (Hons in Psych)

13

The candidate makes the following Declaration and Assent

I, Catherine Jane Prowd, firmly and sincerely believe the Catholic Faith and I give my assent to the doctrine of the Anglican Church of Australia as expressed in The Book of Common Prayer and the Ordering of Bishops, Priests and Deacons and The Articles of Religion as acknowledged in the Constitution, and I believe that doctrine to be agreeable to the Word of God. I declare my assent to the Fundamental Declarations of the Anglican Church of Australia as set out in the Constitution. In public prayer and administration of the sacraments I will use the form prescribed in The Book of Common Prayer, A Prayer Book for Australia or a lawfully authorised form and none other.

The Archbishop says

Kate, you have been chosen to serve as the bishop for the Oodthenong Episcopate within the Diocese of Melbourne in the Anglican Church of Australia. In accordance with the law of our Church, I now require you to declare your assent to the Constitution and Canons of this Church, and to take the Oath of Canonical Obedience.

The candidate is handed a copy of the Scriptures and assents to the Constitution and Canons of the Anglican Church of Australia

I, Catherine Jane Prowd, do solemnly and sincerely declare my assent to be bound by the Constitution of the Anglican Church of Australia and the Constitution of the Province of Victoria and of this Diocese of Melbourne and by the canons, statutes, ordinances and rules, however described, from time to time of the synod of the Diocese of Melbourne and of the General Synod and the Provincial Synod or Council which have force in the Diocese of Melbourne.

The candidate makes the Oath of Canonical Obedience

I, Catherine Jane Prowd, do swear that I will pay true and canonical obedience to the Archbishop of Melbourne and the successors of the Archbishop in all things lawful and honest. So help me God!

The candidate faces the people. The Archbishop addresses the congregation

Dear friends in Christ, you have heard testimony given that Kate has been duly and lawfully appointed to be a bishop in the Church of God, and has made the Assents and taken the Oaths required by the Canons of this Anglican Church of Australia.

Do you accept Kate to minister as a bishop?

All By the grace of God, we do.

Page 14: The Ordination and Consecration as a Bishop in the Church ...€¦ · Consecration as a Bishop in the Church of God of The Reverend Catherine Jane Prowd BA(Hons) BA (Hons in Psych)

14

Will you then uphold and support Kate in her ministry?

All By the grace of God, we will.

The Archbishop addresses the candidate, saying

Kate, do you trust that you are called by God to the office and work of a bishop in the Church of God?

Candidate I believe I am called to this ministry.

Archbishop The people have affirmed their trust in you. Will you endeavour to fulfil this trust, in obedience to Christ?

Candidate I will, by the grace of God.

THE PRAYERS

The Archbishop prays

The Scriptures tell us that Jesus spent the whole night in prayer before he chose and sent out the twelve apostles. Likewise, the apostles prayed before they appointed Matthias to be one of their number, as did the church at Antioch before commissioning Paul and Barnabas for their mission.

Let us therefore follow their examples, and offer our prayers to God as we prepare to consecrate Kate to be a bishop in the Church of God.

All kneel or sit for a period of silent prayer.

THE LITANY FOR MINISTRY

The Precentor leads prayer. Please join in singing the responses as indicated

God the Father: have mercy on us. God the Son: have mercy on us. God the Holy Spirit: have mercy on us. Holy Trinity, one God: have mercy on us.

We humbly pray that you will hear us, good Lord: Grant to your people the forgiveness of sins, growth in grace,

and the fruit of the Spirit. Lord, hear our prayer.

Send your peace to the world which you have reconciled to yourself by the ministry of your Son Jesus. Lord, hear our prayer.

Heal the divisions of your Church, that all may be one, so that the world may believe. Lord, hear our prayer.

Lead the members of your Church in their vocation and ministry, that they may serve you in true and godly living. Lord, hear our prayer.

Raise up faithful and able ministers for your Church, that the Gospel may be known to all people. Lord, hear our prayer.

Page 15: The Ordination and Consecration as a Bishop in the Church ...€¦ · Consecration as a Bishop in the Church of God of The Reverend Catherine Jane Prowd BA(Hons) BA (Hons in Psych)

15

Fill them with compassion, clothe them with humility, and move them to care for all your people. Lord, hear our prayer.

Inspire all bishops, priests, and deacons with your love, that with all your people they may hunger for truth. Lord, hear our prayer.

Bless your servant Kate, now to be admitted to the Order of Bishops. Pour your grace upon her, that she may faithfully fulfil the duties of this ministry, build up your Church, and glorify your name. Lord, hear our prayer.

Sustain by the indwelling of your Holy Spirit all who are called to the ordained ministries of your Church, and encourage them to persevere to the end. Lord, hear our prayer.

Gather us with all your saints into your eternal kingdom. Lord, hear our prayer.

The Archbishop concludes the prayers

Eternal God and Father, you have promised to hear those who pray in the name of your Son: Grant that what we have asked in faith we may obtain according to your will; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

The people sit.

THE EXHORTATION AND EXAMINATION

The Archbishop addresses the candidate

A bishop is called to maintain the Church’s witness to the resurrection of Christ from the dead, to protect the purity of the gospel, and to proclaim Jesus Christ as Lord.

As a chief minister and pastor in Christ’s Church, you are to guard its faith, unity and discipline, and promote its mission in the world. You are to ensure that God’s word is faithfully proclaimed, Christ’s sacraments duly administered, and Christ’s discipline applied justly, with mercy. You are to lead and guide the priests and deacons under your care, and be faithful in the choosing and ordaining of ministers. You are to watch over, protect and serve the people of God, to teach and govern them, and to be hospitable. You must, therefore, know and be known by them, and be a good example to all.

These are the duties of a bishop, and they are weighty. Are you willing to perform them?

The candidate affirms I am willing: may God guide and help me.

Page 16: The Ordination and Consecration as a Bishop in the Church ...€¦ · Consecration as a Bishop in the Church of God of The Reverend Catherine Jane Prowd BA(Hons) BA (Hons in Psych)

16

The Archbishop continues

The Scriptures and ancient canons of the Church require that we should not be hasty in the laying on of hands to admit anyone to an office of government in the Church. And now, in order that we may know your mind and purpose, you must make the declarations we put to you:

Are you convinced that the holy Scriptures contain all doctrine necessary for eternal salvation through faith in Jesus Christ? Will you instruct from them the people committed to your care, teaching nothing as essential to salvation which cannot be demonstrated from the Scriptures?

Candidate I am convinced, and will do so, with God’s help.

Archbishop Will you then be faithful in prayer, and diligent in the study of the holy Scriptures, so that you may be equipped to teach and encourage with sound doctrine?

Candidate I will, seeking to discern the mind of Christ by the Spirit of God.

Archbishop Will you proclaim the gospel to all, especially those among whom you live? Will you lead those in your care to obey our Saviour’s command to make disciples of all nations?

Candidate I will, gladly bearing witness to Christ in the power of God.

Archbishop Will you administer with mercy the discipline of this Church? Will you correct and set aside teaching that is contrary to the mind of Christ, both privately and publicly urging all to live according to God’s Word?

Candidate I will, endeavouring to apply the law of Christ with the grace of God.

Archbishop Will you put aside all ungodly and worldly behaviour, and live modestly, in justice and godliness, so that by your life and example you may commend Christ’s truth?

Candidate I will, seeking in all I do to demonstrate the love of God.

Archbishop Will you maintain and promote quietness, peace and love among all people? Will you correct and discipline, according to the authority you have by God’s word? Will you strive to build up the body of Christ in unity, truth and love?

Candidate I will, commending to all the peace of God.

Archbishop Will you be faithful in ordaining and commissioning others for ministry? Will you encourage those committed to your care to fulfil their ministry?

Candidate I will, in all things striving to set forward the kingdom of Christ.

Page 17: The Ordination and Consecration as a Bishop in the Church ...€¦ · Consecration as a Bishop in the Church of God of The Reverend Catherine Jane Prowd BA(Hons) BA (Hons in Psych)

17

Archbishop Will you show compassion to the poor and the stranger, be gentle with the abused and needy, and defend those who have no helper?

Candidate I will, striving to be merciful in the name of Christ.

All kneel or sit. The Archbishop invites the people to pray

Let us now pray earnestly for the gift of the Holy Spirit.

2 Thy blessèd unction from above is comfort, life, and fire of love; enable with perpetual light the dullness of our blinded sight:

3 Anoint and cheer our soilèd face with the abundance of thy grace: keep far our foes, give peace at home; where thou art guide no ill can come.

4 Teach us to know the Father, Son, and thee, with both, to be but one; that through the ages all along this may be our endless song:

Words: Latin, attrib. Rhabanus Maurus (c. 800) trans. Bishop J. Cosin (1594-1672), Music: Mode VIII

Co-consecrating bishops join the Archbishop at the place of consecration.

THE ORDINATION PRAYER

The candidate kneels before the Archbishop, who prays

Blessed are you, Lord our God! You have given us your only Son to be the Apostle and High Priest of our faith, and the Shepherd of our souls. Exalted as Lord of all, he poured out the Spirit and gave gifts to your people, making some to be apostles, some prophets, some evangelists, some pastors and teachers, to equip the saints for the work of ministry, and to build up the body of Christ. And now we give you thanks that you have called Kate, whom we consecrate in your name to the ministry of a bishop in your Church.

The Archbishop and other bishops lay hands on the head of the candidate. The Archbishop prays

Send down the Holy Spirit upon your servant Kate, whom we set apart by the laying on of our hands, for the office and work of a bishop in your Church. Amen.

The Archbishop continues in prayer

Fill your servant Kate, merciful God, with grace and power, that she may always be ready to proclaim the good news of salvation. Fill her heart with love of you and your people, that she may feed and tend the flock of Christ. Give her humility, and defend her from all evil, that she may exercise without reproach the office of bishop, using its authority to heal, and not to hurt, to build up, and not destroy. Accept our prayer through your Son, Jesus Christ our Lord, to whom with you and the Holy Spirit belong glory and honour, worship and praise, now and for ever. Amen.

THE VESTING

The newly-ordained bishop is vested by the Right Revd Philip Huggins with convocation robes.

THE GIVING OF THE BIBLE AND THE SYMBOLS OF EPISCOPAL MINISTRY

The Revd Canon Prof. Dorothy Lee (Frank Woods Research Professor in New Testament, Trinity College) and Ms Trish Shibaoka (Parishioner, St Stephen’s Gardenvale) hand the Archbishop a Bible, saying

We present this Bible with prayers that Kate will preach and teach it faithfully, clearly and relevantly.

The Archbishop gives the Bible to the newly-ordained bishop, saying

Kate, receive this Bible. Study it well, and expound its teaching. In it are contained the words of eternal life. Take them for your rule, and declare them to the world. Proclaim the love of God and make known the word of his grace.

The Revd Canon Amy Turner and Mr Andrew Tasker hand the Archbishop the episcopal staff (one belonging to Bishop Barbara Darling), saying

We present this staff, a sign of the bishop’s pastoral office, in gratitude for Kate’s ministries in parishes, health, and education.

The Archbishop gives the episcopal staff to the newly-ordained bishop

Kate, receive this staff as a symbol of your ministry as a shepherd of Christ’s flock. Encourage the faithful, support the weak, heal the sick, bind up the broken, restore the outcast, seek the lost. Watch over the people of God.

The Revd Susanne Chambers, the Revd Clem Taplin and Ms Cheryl Holmes OAM (CEO of Spiritiual Health Australia) hand the Archbishop the episcopal ring, saying

We present this ring as a sign of the faithfulness of God, of Christ in all of us and the Spirit who breathes new life to all.

The Archbishop gives the episcopal ring to the newly-ordained bishop

Kate, receive this ring, a symbol of the bond of love, and of episcopal authority. Guard the Church’s unity in faith and service.

The Right Revd Lindsay Urwin OGS, hands the Archbishop the pectoral cross (a gift from Kate and Lindsay’s parents given to Bishop Lindsay at his consecration) saying

I present this cross to be worn close to your heart as a reminder that he whom you preach and serve is very near to you.

THE OFFERTORY HYMNS

During the hymns a collection will be received to support the ministry and outreach of this Cathedral. Thank you for your gift.

2

Christ will not turn away whoever seeks his grace; be such the all-inclusive love that fills this holy place.

4

A joy, a gratitude, a comfort on the way, concerns unknown to all but you and those for whom we pray.

3

In simple need we come, in simple faith draw near; each brings a troubled secret world, a haunting grief, a fear.

5

Gather the world, dear Lord, as we are gathered here, that none be lost, none stand alone, love’s feast for all to share.

Thy truth unchanged hath ever stood, thou savest those that on thee call, to them that seek thee thou art good, to them that find thee, all in all.

4

Our restless spirits yearn for thee, whate’er our changeful lot is cast, glad when thy gracious smile we see, blest when our faith can hold thee fast.

3

We taste thee, O thou living bread, and long to feast upon thee still, we drink of thee, the fountain-head, and thirst our souls from thee to fill.

5

O Jesus, ever with us stay, make all our moments calm and bright, chase the dark night of sin away, shed o’er the world thy holy light.

THE LITURGY OF THE EUCHARIST

Remain standing

Blessed are you, Lord, God of all creation: through your goodness we have these gifts to share. Accept and use our offerings to your glory and for the service of your kingdom: Blessed be God forever.

THE GREAT THANKSGIVING

The Lord be with you. And also with you.

Lift up your hearts. We lift them to the Lord.

Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give our thanks and praise.

Blessed are you, gracious God, creator of heaven and earth. We give you thanks and praise for your Son our Saviour Jesus Christ who came not to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many. He taught your word with boldness, and offered himself to you in perfect obedience.

He cared for all as the good shepherd, and laid down his life for his sheep. By his death and rising to new life he brought new life to your people. In baptism you have united us to him, and brought us out of darkness into light. And now we give you thanks that your Son sent his apostles to be heralds of your kingdom; you made them witnesses to his resurrection, that through them the gospel of salvation might be carried into all the world and those who have not seen might yet believe.

Therefore, with them, and with all your saints who have served you in every age, we give thanks and lift our voices to proclaim the glory of your name.

Sung by the choir, on behalf of all

Holy, holy, holy, Lord God of hosts, Heaven and earth are full of thy glory: Glory be to thee, O Lord most High. Amen.

Blessed is he that cometh in the Name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest. Amen.

Merciful God, we thank you for these gifts of your creation, this bread and wine, and we pray that by your Word and Holy Spirit, we who eat and drink them may be partakers of Christ’s body and blood.

On the night he was betrayed Jesus took bread; and when he had given you thanks he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying, ‘Take, eat. This is my body given for you. Do this in remembrance of me.’

Page 23: The Ordination and Consecration as a Bishop in the Church ...€¦ · Consecration as a Bishop in the Church of God of The Reverend Catherine Jane Prowd BA(Hons) BA (Hons in Psych)

After supper, he took the cup, and again giving you thanks he gave it to his disciples, saying, ‘Drink from this, all of you. This is my blood of the new covenant shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me.’

Therefore we do as our Saviour has commanded: proclaiming his offering of himself made once for all upon the cross, his mighty resurrection and glorious ascension, and looking for his coming again, we celebrate, with this bread and this cup, his one perfect and sufficient sacrifice for the sins of the whole world.

The Deacon introduces the following acclamation

Let us proclaim the mystery of faith: Christ has died. Christ is risen. Christ will come again.

The Archbishop concludes the prayer

Renew us by your Holy Spirit, unite us in the body of your Son, and bring us with all your people into the joy of your eternal kingdom; through Jesus Christ our Lord, with whom, and in whom, in the fellowship of the Holy Spirit, we worship you, Father, in songs of never-ending praise. Blessing and honour and glory and power are yours for ever and ever. Amen.

THE LORD’S PRAYER

As our Saviour Christ has taught us, we are confident to pray, each in our own language:

Notre Père..., Padre nuestro..., Vater unser..., 我們在天上的父 …

Bapa kami..., E to matou Matua..., 天の父よ ...,

Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Save us from the time of trial and deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power and the glory are yours now and for ever. Amen.

THE BREAKING OF THE BREAD AND THE COMMUNION

We break this bread to share in the body of Christ. We who are many are one body, for we all share in the one bread.

The gifts of God for the people of God.

Come let us take this holy sacrament of the body and blood of Christ in remembrance that he died for us, and feed on him in our hearts by faith with thanksgiving.

All baptised Christians are welcome to receive Holy Communion. Gluten free wafers are available. Please tell the priest if you would prefer to receive a blessing.

Communion is administered around the Nave Altar in two sections, and at the High Altar in one section. Those seated in the Chancel will be directed to the High Altar, those seated in the Nave and the side aisles, to the Nave Altar.

THE SENDING OUT OF GOD’S PEOPLE

Please stand.

Lord God, the source of truth and love, keep us faithful to the apostles’ teaching and fellowship, united in prayer and the breaking of bread, and one in joy and simplicity of heart in Jesus Christ our Lord.

We thank you, gracious Father, for welcoming your children to feast in your kingdom; by your love unite us and with your Spirit send us, in the name of Jesus Christ our Lord.

THE DISMISSAL HYMN

Nothing less than faith sustains us - living water, pilgrims’ bread. Christ, the friend who never leaves us, walks the unknown path we tread, sends us, brave or trembling, onward to the work that lies ahead.

Nothing less than justice calls us – not what we may stand to gain. Christ, beside the poor and voiceless, pleads for peace, denounces pain, sends us out to make a difference, growing heaven’s earthly reign.

Nothing less than Holy Spirit gives our mission energy. Christ, among the slow and fearful, breathes the truth that sets us free, sends us out to bless, forgive and be the change we long to see.

Nothing less than all we are and all we have and dream and do you transform by grace, and make us holy, humble, hopeful, true. Threefold God of power and beauty, start, with us, your world made new.

The Archbishop and the Assistant Bishops of the Diocese lead the new Bishop to the Assistant Bishop’s Stall, first occupied by Bishop Joseph John Booth. The Archbishop installs the Rt Revd Kate Prowd and says the following prayer, the new bishop kneeling, all others standing.

Almighty and most merciful Father, we look to you to enable your people in this Diocese to make your word fully known: pour down upon your servant Kate, now consecrated as a bishop, the fullness of your grace. Increase and multiply upon her those gifts which you have given her, that she may fulfil the duties of her office as Assistant Bishop, and evermore be sanctified for your service; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, ever one God, world without end. Amen.

THE BLESSING

May the Father, whose glory fills the heavens, cleanse you by his holiness and send you to proclaim his word. Amen.

May Christ, who has ascended to the heights, pour upon you the riches of his grace. Amen.

May the Holy Spirit, the comforter, equip you and strengthen you in your ministry. Amen.

And the blessing of God almighty, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, be upon you and remain with you always. Amen.

The Deacon dismisses the people

Go in the peace of Christ. Thanks be to God.
