The Orthodox Way The Monthly Newsletter of St. Demetrios Greek Orthodox Church

St. Demetrios Greek Orthodox Church - 2100 Boyer Avenue East - Seattle, Washington - 98112 The Orthodox Way is published monthly. Parishioners who wish to contribute content or announcements are asked to email information to

Encyclical for the Feast of Indiction 2015 “Let your light shine before men, that they may see your good works
and give glory to your Father who is in heaven.” Matthew 5:16 Beloved in the Lord,
The above verse is taken from our Lord’s Sermon on the Mount, and I hope it
will inspire each of you and the ministries of our Metropolis in this new Eccle-
siastical year. As the Lord teaches, this light, this brilliance, is not meant to be
covered under a bushel, but placed high for all to see and to illumine a path for
all to come to Him. Now that our parish programs and ministries resume their
normal routines after the summer months, let the light of our faith and life as
Orthodox Christians shine bright.
As you read this letter, I am enjoying the hospitality of our Ecumenical Patri-
archate, at the Phanar, for the Synaxis of the Hierarchs of the Ecumenical
Throne. The Phanar is so named because of the lighthouse that once sat in this
area on the Golden Horn. Today the lighthouse is gone, but our Patriarchate
serves as the lighthouse for our Orthodox faith, being a shining example of
leadership and care for the Orthodox Church and the people of the world.
In the Synaxis, Archbishops, Metropolitans, and Bishops from the eparchies and dioceses of the Ecumeni-
cal Patriarchate around the globe are gathered in council under the leadership of our His All Holiness
Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew to discuss the issues facing our Church and the world today.
Throughout the Synaxis our focus will be on finding new ways for our Faith and Church to shine the light
of Christ with greater intensity. There are many issues to discuss from the forthcoming Great and Holy
Council to be held in 2016, to the tragic situation of the Church under persecution in the Middle East. We
must act as one Church to continually shine light on these issues.
Another area of common concern for the Church and the world is the envi-
ronment. September 1 has been designated as the day of the Protection of
the Environment. Our Ecumenical Patriarch began shining light on this is-
sue long before other religious leaders. His All Holiness has called us to
pray for the protection of the environment and to ask for forgiveness for our
complicity in its destruction. With the raging forest fires, years of drought,
and the recent toxic accident in a river, we can see why we must turn to
God and ask Him to enlighten us with environmental wisdom, for we need
His help and guidance more than ever.
Let me conclude by returning to our work of the Metropolis of San Francis-
co. Our task in this coming Ecclesiastical year is to magnify and radiate the
light of Christ through the life of our parishes and people. We, the Body of
Christ, are called to continue Christ’s mission in the world, to see all people
as Christ saw them: children of their loving God and Father. This coming
year as we continue to implement our Strategic Plan, let us spread the light
of the Good News of Jesus Christ and His Orthodox Church throughout our
Metropolis. The programs and ministries we are building can shine the love
and the light of Christ on all people. Some people today criticize Christiani-
ty because they believe it is not living up to the Gospel that it preaches. Let
this not be so among our parishes and Metropolis. Let our love for our
neighbor be as meaningful as the words we preach!
May the love of God the Father shine in your hearts and radiate among the
lives of all you encounter in your parish, in your work, and in your family.
Beseeching our God to bring this New Ecclesiastical Year all His blessings,
I remain, With Love in Christ, + G E R A S I M O S

FESTIVAL UPDATE
O ctober 9th is just a little more than 6 weeks away. Are
we ready? The ladies and gentlemen who have helped
with all of the pastries and food preparations certainly have
done their part this year with record size help to complete the
tasks in record time, I was told. I showed up one day to
provide moral support and wound up stirring bechamel sauce
which was a good workout!
We will hold one more Festival meeting in early September,
date to be determined soon. If you are a chair or interested in
getting involved with the Festival please attend.
We are going to print around September 8th with this years
Festival guide and if you would like to get your name or busi-
ness advertised in the guide please call either the office or
myself (206)571-6881 and provide any advertisement
to [email protected] you would like to place in the
booklet.
Cost is:
$1,000.00 full page ad $500.00 half page
$250.00 third page.
We already have several participants but I would like to have
a large program showing what talents our community
holds. Guides will be distributed around the city prior to our
Festival.
I would also like to thank the St. Demetrios Cookbook
committee for donating to cover the natural gas conversion
project. The committee (Frances Barnecut, Presbytera Artemis
Demopulos, Alice Panagakis, Maria Kaltsounis, Jean
Katsandres, Anita Leonidas, Theodora Plumis, Evie Rigas.)
These ladies produced the original cook book which is still a
best seller. Also for the support of Dorothea Mootafes, and
Cleo Supernaw who have helped manage the continuation of
this ministry, and for their support of the Festival.
Tent set up starts Monday October 5th at 8am sharp for all who
can lend a hand and continues daily until the Festival.
Also, we wish to thank Petros and Colleen Farmasonis, Pete and
Carol Mykris and George and Giannoula Lymberis for their
donation for a special project in the old kitchen, and also Vasili
Varlamos for his hard work for helping with the installation of
the new Gas line in the parking lot and the old kitchen project.

Stewardship as a Prayer of Thanksgiving
I t has been said Christianity is not a religion, but a way of
life. If we follow this way of life, it leads us on a path
towards unity with Christ. The same can be said for our
stewardship. It is one part of that way which helps us to center
our lives in Christ. When we give of our time, talent, and
treasure, we are recognizing and giving thanks for the
blessings God has given us in our lives.
Giving thanks is essential to our Christian lives and to our
worship. The most important divine service, the Eucharist,
which literally means to give thanks. We offer simple gifts of
bread and wine to God and ask Him to transform them into
something holy, His very body and blood. When we receive
the Eucharist, He sanctifies us with those gifts.
Our stewardship is no different. St Paul tells us, “I commend
you to God and to the word of His grace, which is able to
build you up and give you an inheritance among all those who
are sanctified.” (Acts 20:32) We don’t give money to the
Church simply to pay the bills. We offer up the gifts He has
given us so that he can multiply them for our own spiritual
well being and the good of the whole Body of His Church. If
we view stewardship in this way, as a prayer of thanksgiving
in which we ask God to transform our lives, how much more
effect does it have on us?
As we begin the New Ecclesiastical Year this month, take
time to ponder this as you decide how you will offer your
prayer of stewardship.
In Christ,
+Fr. Daniel

.Message from President Nina
The Executive Board of our chapter met for a planning session
to prepare for the coming year. While I knew our Philoptochos
ladies are busy, I was surprised at all of the National, Metropo-
lis and local ministries our chapter is part of. There is some-
thing for everyone! I am especially interested in the involve-
ment of younger women in our parish and the fresh ideas they
will bring us I look forward to working with women who have
not previously been involved in our chapter and the other Min-
istries of St Demetrios. I welcome suggestions and new ideas
for our future. I can be reached at home 206.784.4922 or my
cell is 206.499.0369 (call or text). My e-mail
The perfect way to travel through time….. Camp Agape
NW 2015!
When parents hear the words “your child has cancer”, time
stops. This year’s “Back to Future” theme was a great way for
19 families with children with cancer to “restart time”. Fami-
lies were given the opportunity to relax, create positive memo-
ries, and build connections with people. Everyone “traveled
through time” together with fun activities like square dancing,
karaoke, a dock party, fishing, boating and inter-tubing, swim-
ming, arts and crafts, silly skits, a carnival, and foam volley-
ball. Special treats included a Mom’s Tea, Dad’s Lunch, and
Parent’s Dinner Out at the county club.
One mother said “This has been the best experience for our
entire family. It even beats the Make-a-Wish trip to Disney-
land. No amount of money can provide the human connections
and personal attention the camp staff provided for us. Camp
Agape NW is our second family”
Camp Agape NW hosted 19 families and 20 children with can-
cer (one family has 2 children with cancer). This was made
possible by the hard work of the Philoptochos chapters of St
Demetrios, The Church of the Assumption, Holy Apostles and
St Nicholas and the love of over 135 volunteers. Thank you
all!
Please Join Us for the Sinatra Chocolate Wine Ball
Sunday, November 16th please join Camp Agape NW for an
elegant evening at Herban Feast. Our 7th annual celebration
will feature a seasonal dinner menu, Washington wines and
chocolatiers, and the music of Frank Sinatra. Proceeds from
the event will benefit Camp Agape, a camp for children with
cancer and their families. Tickets are available
at www.brownpapertickets.com for $100 or if purchased by
Sunday, October 11th only $90 per person. Tables of 10 are
available for $875. Camp Agape will have a table at the festi-
val to tell the story of our camp and tickets will be available
there. For more information,
contact [email protected] or call 425.772.1605.
It’s Not Too Late to Join Philoptochos We are always happy to have new members join our
group! We hope you will support us with your annual dues of
$40 and join us when you can for fellowship. All are welcome
and if you have time to donate in addition to your check, even
better. You will not receive a call when you write a check as
we are a volunteer organization and we are grateful for every
member whatever their participation. We realize that not eve-
ryone is able to come to our meetings but your dues are what
allows us to do the work of Philoptochos and are gratefully
accepted. To join, please contact Dorothy Haskell
at 425.503.4200 or [email protected].

Bookstore News
A new shipment of the complete
Orthodox Study Bible has just
arrived. This single volume brings together
an original translation of the Old Testament
with the New Testament and Psalms.
The Orthodox Study Bible is the result of a
20 year effort by many contemporary
Orthodox Theologians. For those of us who
find the Holy Scriptures challenging to
understand, the Orthodox Study Bible provides explanations
and definitions in each section. Additionally, the Study Bible
includes introductions and outlines for each Book, a subject
index to quickly look up items of interest, as well as full-color
maps and icons to visually bring the scriptures alive.
Daily reading of the Holy Scriptures is a must for all Orthodox
Christians and the Orthodox Study Bible includes valuable
commentary about how to apply the Word of God to our daily
lives.

A MISSION TEAM EXPERIENCE
A mong the many ways we can support the world-wide work of the Orthodox Christian Mission Center is by
volunteering to serve on a short-term Mission Team. These teams visit various countries for one to three weeks,
usually in the summer, and help local Orthodox communities with church and school construction, teaching, medical
clinics, children’s camps, and other tasks.
A number of parishioners from St. Demetrios have participated on OCMC teams over the past 30 years. One of the first
was Mary Dallas-Smith who went to Ghana in West Africa in 1989 to work on building a new church in the capital of
Accra. In a poignant letter to our then priest, Fr. Homer Demopulos, of blessed memory, Mary noted:
“The church is progressing very quickly – work, physical work, 6 days a week.” But seeing the poverty and living condi-
tions is “very difficult for us all.”
“All we can do is pray we have brought love and friendship to this Orthodox community. To be perfectly honest, this is
the hardest thing I ever had to do.”
As happens with many Mission team members, Mary also made a life-long connection with Ghana by becoming
a sponsor at the Baptism of a local baby.
For more information on how you can join a Mission Team, go to www.ocmc.org
