I hope that you all enjoyed the school holidays and have had a great start to Term 3. We are now all very busy with our work for Term 3 and both classes are making fabulous progress. The shift from one class to two groups has been highly successful with both classes settling in well to their new routines. It is wonderful to be able to further tailor our instruction to suit the needs of your children and to be able to offer even more small group and one to one time. As the transition to two groups has been so successful, we will continue this model through Term 4. We would also like to continue this model in 2020 but this will be dependent on our Day 8 enrolments. The Showcase Awards for Excellence in Schools (Showcase Awards) are presented annually to Queensland state schools with excellent practices that significantly improve outcomes for students. I am very proud to say we that, The Rural and Remote Individualised Curriculum Delivery Initiative from Burdekin and Dalrymple Cluster has been announced as a 2019 Showcase Awards for Excellence in Schools state finalist in the Teachers Mutual Bank Showcase Award for Excellence in Rural and Remote Education. This is a great honour for all of the schools involved and I would like to congratulate all of the schools in both clusters. Small schools certainly are GREAT schools! The state winners will be announced on 25 October – good luck to all of the finalists. Have a fantastic week everyone, Hayley Laidlow Principal

P&C News

Our next P&C Meeting will be held next Monday, 5 August from 3:15pm in the staffroom. All parents and carers are welcome and encouraged to attend. We will have a number of fundraising activities happening this term so please keep an eye out in our newsletters and on our Facebook page to see how you can help out. Attached is a letter from the P&C in regards to assistance with tuckshop, please complete it and return it to school ASAP. This Saturday, the P&C will be holding a BBQ fundraiser at Woolworths, Ayr from 9am onwards – we need helpers to assist with this BBQ, please come along and help if you can.

Attendance

Our current attendance rate for this semester is 88.9% (as at 14 June 2019). This has declined from 90.8% in Term 2 and is well below our target of 95%. Regular attendance at school is vital to your child’s success. Please remember that the only reasons children should be away from school are for illness or medical appointments. If your child is going to be absent, please ensure that you call, send a text message or an email explaining why your child will not be at school if they are going to be absent. In 2019, we are aiming to keep our whole school attendance above 95% - remember Every Day at School Counts!

Rotary Community Raffle

Attached to this newsletter are 2 books of tickets for the annual Rotary Community Raffle. Tickets cost $5 each and 100% of the money from the tickets we sell comes directly back to the school. This money will be used by our P&C to continue to improve our school facilities. Money from previous community raffles has been used to help fund excursions, purchase resources and to fund the installation of our beautiful new classroom kitchen and wet area. The top prize is $10000 and there is an additional prize of $1000 for the organisation that sells the winning ticket! As this is an Art Union, all tickets must be accounted for. Tickets (both sold and unsold) will need to be returned to school by Friday 18 October. We have a fantastic ticket sellers’ prize for the child/family who sells the most tickets. If you need more books of tickets, please see Mrs Sartori or Miss Laidlow at the school office.

School Opinion Surveys

Attached to this newsletter you will find a copy of the annual School Opinion Survey. This survey provides us with important feedback about your thoughts and feelings about our school. The survey is completely confidential and all data is aggregated and de-identified before being returned to the school. We would very much appreciate your feedback as we can then use this to further improve our practices. Please complete and return the survey to school in the attached envelope by Friday 23 August, alternately, you are welcome to use the access codes to complete the survey online. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact us at school.

Nationally Consistent Collection of Data (NCCD)

The NCCD is an annual collection of information about Australian school students with disability. The NCCD enables schools, education authorities and governments to better understand the needs of students with disability and how they can be best supported at school. Next week our school will submit our data for the annual NCCD.

As a parent, guardian or carer, what do I need to know? The Nationally Consistent Collection of Data on School Students with Disability (NCCD) is an annual process participated in by all Australian schools across the country. The aim of this process is to provide the Australian Government with consistent information about the number of students with disability in Australian schools and the type of adjustments they require in order to access and participate in education on the same basis as other students. From 2018, the NCCD will be used by the Australian Government to inform funding for schools, known as the ‘student with disability loading’. If you are a parent, guardian or carer of a child with disability who requires ongoing adjustments at school, a teacher or another school staff member will consult with you to understand your child’s needs. This collaborative approach ensures the most appropriate adjustments are chosen to support your child’s learning and participation at school. In some cases, an individual education plan (IEP) or personal learning plan (PLP) may be developed to document specific educational goals and to review your child’s progress over time. Your child will be included in the NCCD if they require ongoing adjustments at school due to a disability as defined by the Disability Discrimination Act 1992 This link will open in a new window (the DDA). This is a very broad definition of disability, which includes physical and intellectual disabilities, learning disorders such as dyslexia and dysgraphia, and mental health conditions such as anxiety and depression. The Disability Standards for Education 2005 (the Standards) set out the obligations of schools towards students with disability. Information for parents, guardians and carers on the DDA and the Standards about how schools can work with students and their families is available at Disability Standards for Education: A practical guide for individuals, families and communities This link will open in a new window. If your child has a disability, your child’s school will provide information about them for the NCCD, including:

your child’s year of schooling the category of disability that best describes your child’s difficulties (one of four categories is chosen by the

school team to reflect your child’s greatest area of need: physical, cognitive, sensory or social/emotional) the level of adjustment your child receives at school (one of four levels is chosen by the school team to

reflect the type of support your child requires: quality differentiated teaching practice, supplementary adjustment, substantial adjustment, or extensive adjustment).

The information collected by schools for the NCCD will ultimately be provided to the Australian Government Department of Education. In some cases this will involve the school passing the information directly to the Department. In other cases the school will provide it to its state or territory government agency (or other relevant body) in the first instance, and that agency will then provide the information to the Department. While it is not possible for schools or families to ‘opt out’ of the NCCD, the privacy and confidentiality of all students and their families is treated with utmost importance. Data is collected within each school, and personal details, such as student names and other identifying information, are not provided to local or federal education authorities. Related resources

OSS Tuckshop

Dear Parents and Carers,

Osborne State School P&C are looking at starting a tuckshop at school. Initially, we are looking to operate

fortnightly. In order for this to work we need parents who are willing to help out. All that would be

involved is coming to the school on your rostered day (the more parents we have the easier it will be) and

preparing lunch for the children. You can either stay to hand out to the lunches at break time or they can

be stored in the fridge in the new kitchen for the kids to grab at lunch time.

Lunch would need to be prepared by 10:50am, afternoon tea can be prepared and left in the fridge so you

don’t have to stick around all day. You could even come in at drop off in the morning and prepare lunch

and afternoon tea, store it in the fridges then head home. If you are able to help us with tuckshops please

put your name down for a date that suits you below and return the note to school. A roster will be sent

home prior to the first tuckshop date so you can plan ahead for your rostered day.

Magnificent Work this Month The end of term was so much fun – we cooked and iced cakes for the show, danced the night away at the Fancy

Dress Ball, had a visit from Professor Glen and Kayleigh and Blaize attended the Global Tropics Future Sprint Challenge at JCU. On the holidays, Blaize, Solomon, Mrs Marchioni and Miss Laidlow travelled to Canberra and the

Snowy Mountains for Scinspiration 2019!
