A History of the Pakistan ArmyWarS and InSurreCTIonS

FourTh edITIon

Brian Cloughley

The scope of this in-depth study of the Pakistan Army is wide as the army has played a major part in the country’s history. The author describes Pakistan’s violent internal politics and erratic international relations with deep knowledge gained through long association with the country and its armed forces. Pakistan’s wars with India and the country’s resurrection under Zulfikar Ali Bhutto are described vividly, as is the decade of dictatorship that followed. The story of its aftermath, when Pakistan grappled with unaccustomed democracy and verged on anarchy, is told with the aid of personal knowledge of many of the senior players. This fourth edition incorporates new chapters covering the Musharraf years, the effects on Pakistan of the war in Afghanistan and operations in the border region, the nuclear programme, relations with the US, and a discussion of the Directorate of Inter-Services Intelligence.

Brian Cloughley is a commentator on political and military affairs, specializing in South Asia, and is South Asia defense analyst for Jane’s Sentinel.

Bharatiya Janata Party and the Indian MuslimsMuhammad Mujeeb Afzal

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is perceived as a communal party that aims to eliminate the secular character of the Indian state in which Indian Muslims coexist. The Hindus and Indian Muslims are often projected as absolute identities. The present study argues that a number of identities—communitarian, caste, and regional—exist in India and compete to preserve their respective traditions. The BJP as the proponent of Hindutva and the Muslims as the advocates of Islam–Urdu are struggling to protect their respective value systems and traditions. Both identities have deep historical roots that were formed during the British Raj. The author has studied the BJP—Muslim interaction in three distinct phases: the Raj era; the post-Independence Congress-dominated era; and the post-Congress dominated BJP era.

Muhammad Mujeeb Afzal is Assistant Professor, School of Politics and International Relations, Quaid-i-Azam University, Islamabad.

Conflict Management and Vision for a Secular Pakistana CoMParaTIVe STudy

Moonis Ahmar

This book aims to examine the vision for the state of Pakistan as perceived by the founders of the country. It argues that conflicts, particularly those at sectarian and communal levels, can be effectively managed by following a secular approach. This would require the adoption of a secular ‘toolkit’ primarily composed of tolerance, neutrality in religious matters, religious freedom, good governance, and the rule of law. This study argues that the issue of religious militancy and violence can be successfully dealt with by introducing a secular order. It aims to develop a secular approach and mindset that will unshackle the process of conflict management in Pakistan, based on the experience of European, Turkish, Indian, and Indonesian experiments with secularism.

Dr Moonis Ahmar is Professor of International Relations at the University of Karachi and the Director of the Programme on Peace Studies and Conflict Resolution.

The Closed ValleyWITh FIerCe FrIendS In The PaKISTanI hIMalayaS

Jürgen Wasim Frembgen

In Pakistan, stubborn mountain tribes still lead a largely secluded life, preserving their archaic cultural traditions. Their distinctive features are Sunni Islam, strict gender segregation, a prevalent caste system, and frequent blood feuds. The author of this study was one of the first to venture into the valley of Harban, a world hostile to outsiders, lying in the Gilgit–Baltistan region located in the Himalayas of North Pakistan. The study was conducted over the course of several stays between 1989 and 1997. Enduring strains and dangers, Jürgen Wasim found a way to overcome the omnipresent mistrust. In this work of literary anthropology he narrates his experiences in sharing the daily life of a harsh, male-dominated society where he surprisingly discovers gentleness, poetry, and warm-hearted friendship.

Jürgen Wasim Frembgen is Chief Curator of the Oriental Department at the Museum of Ethnology in Munich, as well as Professor in Islamic Studies at the University of Munich.

SeCond edITIon

Sikandar hayat

This second, revised edition of the book is an updated version, covering the most recent writings on the subject, especially in India, and provides a detailed and systematic analysis of the charismatic leadership of Quaid-i-Azam Mohammad Ali Jinnah, the leader of Indian Muslims during the crisis-ridden decade of 1937–47. Although Jinnah has been studied as a charismatic leader before, no previous study has defined and discussed the concept of charisma so methodically or employed it to analyze his leadership in such a systematic, organized manner. In this sense, the book is unique and distinct and makes an original contribution to the scholarly literature on Jinnah’s political leadership.

Sikandar Hayat is currently directing staff at the National Management College, Lahore.
