We had already tied down her returning Grand Champion 172K Skyhawk at Oshkosh several days earlier and reserved a spot next to it for our Bonanza also. Unfortunately the weather did not smile on us for the Saturday B2OSH formation flight from Rockford. Instead five inches of new rain fell on the Oshkosh Airport. The Bonanzas to Oshkosh formation flight was scratched and it was now every man for himself getting to Oshkosh. By the following Monday AirVenture was accepting arrivals again and it was going to be busy! We started from Madison only 60 miles south but during the short trip both runways at Oshkosh were closed twice, once for the Blue Angles. We chose to hold to the south rather than join the mob circling Green Lake in the hold. Thirty minutes later we decided to head up to Green Lake and enter the hold per the current instructions given from the ATC guys at Fisk. Fortunately we had ADS-B IN and we could see the mob circling Green Lake but Stephanie noticed an empty spot in the circuit and I maneuvered our Bonanza into it. to spacing problems we were cleared directly to runway 36R for landing! The situational awareness of ADS-B traffic was a big game changer for us this year. It helped us locate the gap in the mob circling Rush Lake and it helped us maintain the required spacing on the traffic in front of us.

It was a bittersweet event at our Bonanzas to Oshkosh event this year as we had lost two of our long-time members. Robert Mark died in an airplane accident in early June on his way to perform a missing man formation flight. We all knew Robert as he has been the MC at our big Sunday party for years. Wayne Collins, our Bonanzas to Oshkosh founder passed away peacefully earlier this year. Wayne was 94 years old. Last July, at the age of 93, he flew a perfect Right Wing position in the lead element of Bonanzas to Oshkosh XXIX (29). Wayne lived a full and rich life and flew his Bonanza around the world twice. I feel privileged to have known him.

Vehicle Parking Problems at Paine FieldLast month I wrote about the problems some of our pilots were having with the Uber/Lyft drivers on the east ramp. This issue appears to be resolved and a more permanent solution is coming in the form of a specific parking lot designated for them.

The problem that I am hearing about now is with drivers who are picking up their friends or family members at the new air terminal. They arrive early and park in random places on Paine Field. I have seen them park in the Everett Community College parking lot across from the terminal. I have also heard of them parking in the roadways that enter gates N1 & N2.

This is obviously a much more difficult problem to deal with than the Uber/Lyft drivers who can be instructed where to park. I expect that most of this problem will occur closer to the new air terminal. I am not likely to see much of this problem myself as I typically use gate S9 to access the west ramp.

I would like to hear from pilots who have experienced problems with these people who are just waiting for someone to arrive at the terminal. You may email me at [email protected]. If these people are becoming an issue I will be glad to discuss it with our airport management. I am aware that some airports have a cell phone waiting parking lot. At SeaTac the cell phone waiting parking lot is not very close to the terminal but it is close enough to get to the arrival area in less than 10 minutes. I am not aware of a cell phone waiting parking area at Paine Field. RJ

Snohomish County Airport Commission Report

The Snohomish County Airport Commission serves as an advisory board to the county executive. It was approved by the county council in March 2017. The airport commission serves in an advisory role to the county executive on these matters at Paine Field Airport. More information regarding the Snohomish County Airport Commission can be found at: https://www.painefield.com/221/Airport-Commission.

Notes from the July 25, 2019 meeting:The Airport budget was reviewed and a question and answer period followed.

Runway 11/29 closure, Boeing has 2 1/2 years left. The airport has not released the plan after the lease is up, and will make that determination when they complete a new Airport Master plan.

A concern was brought up with long delays in getting fuel from Castle and Cook as well as a timeline for when the self-serve pumps will be operational. Castle and Cook did not attend the meeting and no further information was available.

There was a question asking if the Tower hours would be increased to cover the hours of when commercial flights operate. The FAA has a metric that includes frequency of flights that at this time is not being met.

A question about future CAT III approach for 16R. The requirements to make 16R a CAT III is a long and expensive list that at this time is not being considered.

The next Commission meeting is on 24 Oct at 1800 hrs at 3000 Rockefeller Ave, Everett. All are welcome to attend.

Membership Roundup Hello everyone, I hope y’all are having a fantastic aviating summer. I for one am enjoying (questioning) the ownership of my very first airplane. Yes I’ve joined the ranks of “The Hole In The Sky Gang” (In which to throw money) recently with the purchase of a 1956 Cessna 172, located for me by my good friend (Hmmmm) Jerry Barkley. It’s Official (according to the FAA) I am now the registered owner, after waiting for six weeks for them to process their backlog of registrations and such.

I have been flying quite often lately, as well as doing regular maintenance, repairs, and upgrades, with the help of another friend Greg at Galvin Flying service. We have installed one of the uAvionics SkyBeacon wing tip ADS-B out units. Very simple installation, with 3 screws, 2 wires and an App on the IPhone to program the unit, and it’s ready to fly. Wow, works great and not one single error in the FAA ADS-B public report. Since June, when I flew it back from Jerry’s place in Chelan to Yakima, and home to Paine Field, we’ve managed to put nearly 25 hours on it. So needless to say I have

gathered at least 15 WPA PassPort stamps along the way at Lopez, Orcas, Yakima, Chelan, Darrington, Mansfield, South Whidbey Air Park and Port Angeles to name a few. For the record I would like to say the oddest, hard to find if you don’t know where it’s hiding, stamp location is the one at Darrington. I won’t spoil it for you and your Easter egg stamp hunt, but you won’t be shocked once you locate it. LOL My wife Karen and I had a great day at the Orcas Fly In and Car Show, with a nice walk into town for Fish and Chips. The Arlington Fly In was great this year as usual, and I made several new friends, and ran into an old friend Peter Hauten (sp) sitting in the pilots seat of the PBY, I hadn’t seen in 25 years. So on to a little official business, as of this writing The Paine Field Chapter of the WPA has 207 members, which is about our usual average membership for the last several years. Some where along the way we have lost about 30 members, so happy trails to all of them. We have however gained 30 brand new ones this year. So I would like to welcome our new members, and we all look forward to getting to know you. And last but not least, I am looking for a KX170C nav/com radio replacement for my old MX170B, If anyone has one for sale or knows of someone with a spare one, please contact me. Enjoy the rest or your flying summer! WT
