While filling other people’s buckets can also fill our own, this time of year can also bring stress, as we try to “get it all done”. THE PALO VERDE VOICE

FROM THE DESK OF HILLARY MILLER…

Dear Palo Verde Community,

It’s a magical time of year filled with so much gratitude and giving. Some of our classrooms are implementing holiday service projects, and the school is collecting gifts for the Giving Tree and the Fire Relief in Northern California. While filling other people’s buckets can also fill our own, this time of year can also bring stress, as we try to “get it all done”. I want to remind us all how important it is to slow down and enjoy the time with our children whenever possible. Sitting down to dinner, reading together, taking a walk, there are lots of ways we can spend time with the people we care about. Beyond telling our children how much we care, the winter holiday season is a fantastic opportunity to take time out of our busy schedules to show them.

One point of stress as people try to “get it all done” in our community, lately, has been morning drop-off both on Rorke and Louis. I ask you all to follow the safety rules on pages 13 and 14 of our parent handbook (https://paloverde.pausd.org/explore/palo-verde-handbook). To support this effort, our School Site Council (SSC) suggested I put together a parent advisory group/traffic safety team to get some assistance with making sure our students are safe and witness positive interactions as they arrive at school each day. If you are interested in being part of this group of volunteers, please email me at [email protected] by December 12. You will need to be available before school (8:00-8:20) on some school mornings.

Whether you stay in the neighborhood or travel across the world during our upcoming two-week break, I hope you find quality time to read, cook, play games, or just talk with one another. Please note that we will have a minimum day on Thursday, December 21, and will return to school on Monday, January 8. I look forward to seeing you all in 2018!

For other important and upcoming dates, please subscribe to the Google calendar on our school website and to Konstella for regular reminders.

Happy Holidays and thank you for all the support.

Sincerely,

Hillary [email protected]

What a BIG week! Thanks to everyone for helping to make this past week a huge success and reinforcing the lesson “Be the Biggest YOU that YOU can be” from this month’s ABC book “Big” by Coleen Paratore. This whole week, half-pint students have been being the biggest “BIG” they can people by bringing in change for a Sonoma Elementary school devastated by the fires, making posters and performing random acts of Kindness.

The author defines BIG as being bright, imaginative, healthy, helpful, & valuable members of society.

Goals of lesson:• Encourage students to take small steps to achieve BIG outcomes at home, school &

community.• Internalize intrinsic rewards of doing things for the right reasons: Being an

UPstander.• Perform intentional acts of caring for others.• Understand that everyone can be BIG in their own way.

To reinforce this lesson at home:Discuss ways your family contributes individually & together to making a difference in

the world.Ask your child:

How can I be BIG in my family? How can we be kind to each other in a BIG way?How can we be BIG in our community? What do we do to be BIG toward our planet?Name people who are BIG (famous, friends, family, in the news) & explain why.

Parents can consider reading the book The World Needs Your Kid: Raising Children Who Care & Contribute by Craig & Marc Kielburger. This book focuses on simple everyday actions that can have a lasting influence on your child's life & the lives of those around us.

When you “catch” kids modeling positive behaviors... Notice, Name it, & Celebrate it!

WITH THANKS… Thank You! Our Harvest and International Fair was held on Sunday, November 5th with an amazing turnout of Palo Verde families. We handed out 250 passports to students and siblings who visited 18 international country booths and played Olympic games run by our 5th graders. Everyone sampled delicious food and tried fun games and crafts from around the world, reflecting Palo Verde's diverse community. This event would not have been possible without the tremendous support from our parent and student volunteers. A huge THANK YOU to the fair co-chairs: Karolina Werner, Vanessa Shone, Malati Raghunath, and Yael Valek who made this incredible event such a success.

And thank you to the many parent volunteers and their families who created the engaging country booths:
