Laurens Volunteer Firefi ghter Association Pancake BreakfastDear Friends:October 4th through the 10th is Fire Prevention Week. This is the time of the year to remind you to check your homes and business establishments for possible fi re hazards. Also please take time to check your smoke detectors to make sure they work and to change the batteries in the detectors. This should be done twice a year to insure that they work should you need them. Do you own a fi re extinguisher? These also need to be checked at least once a year to keep them in working order. If you are unsure how to check them, just ask any fi refi ghter and we will either explain how to check them or if you prefer, check them for you. These are such simple things, but could become very important in an emergency. The Laurens Volunteer Firefi ghter Association would like to invite you and your family to visit the Fire Station on Sunday, Oct. 4th. We will be serving pancakes and sausages from 8:00 a.m. until 12:00 p.m. or later, if need be. While you are visiting with us, please take a look at the equipment that has been purchased with your tremendous support over the years. I am sure you will fi nd it very interesting. We are once again asking for your help, as with all things from time to time our equipment needs to be up-dated. Many of the things used by the Fire Department were purchased by your generous donations and we are very proud of the equipment we have. This year all proceeds from the Breakfast will go towards purchasing new SCBA’s. We are asking that you place your donations, whether large or small, in the enclosed envelope and mail it to the Fire Department or better yet, bring it with you on Oct. 5th and spend a little time with us. Our annual pancake breakfast has always been a great success thanks to the wonderful support of our community. It is great to live in a community where people respect and care about each other, making it much easier to be a volunteer. Thank you for your continued support and thank you in advance for your contribution.

Hunger Progrm at the LibraryKate & Gen from the FoodBank of Iowa came and talked to about 19 people who wanted to learn about hunger in our area. After they told about their different successes and programs, they discussed current local projects such as our food pantries and the Caring Lunches with community members that were present. There was an exchange of ideas about how FoodBank can help to improve these resources. Contact the Library if you want to get involved - we can put you in touch with the right people!

Rain Garden Planted in Front of Fisher HydraulicsOn two recent evenings, members of the Laurens Hometown Pride Committee, four Fisher Hydraulics employees, and two volunteers planted a rain garden in one of the ditches that borders Fisher Hydraulics on Highway 10. A rain garden is a shallow depression that is planted with deep-rooted native plants and grasses and collects rainwater runoff from impervious areas like roofs, driveways, parking lots, and walkways. A rain garden is designed to withstand extremes of moisture and concentrations of nutrients, particularly nitrogen and phosphorus, that are found in storm water runoff and stops this water from reaching the sewer system. The Hometown Pride Committee received a grant from Iowa Living Roadways in order to complete this project. City employees dug out the existing white rock and prepared the bed for the new plants. Those helping plant and mulch were Hometown Pride Committee members Doc Van Genderen, Shirley McKiernan, Julie Potter, Barb Smith, Peg Milton, and John Pohlman; Fisher Hydraulics employees Cathy Fuchs, Diane Harrison, Theresa Benjamin, and Tom Richardson; and

volunteers Sammy Smith and Don Hertz. Jeff Jensen, of Trees Forever, provided guidance with plant placement and also helped with the planting. Plants weren’t even in the ground yet and butterfl ies were making their way from plant to plant. Hopefully, this will help improve the “curb appeal” of the Highway 10 corridor that goes through Laurens. Many thanks to everyone who prepared the ditch, helped plant and mulch, and to Fisher Hydraulics for volunteering to water the plants. Hometown Pride is always looking for new members. If you would be interested in giving back to Laurens and volunteering your time to help Laurens be a better place, please contact Barb Smith at City Hall or just come to a meeting. We meet the second Monday of every month at 5:30 p.m. at City Hall.

Oh my! What fun we have had at out Monday morning Tot Times! I think our patrons must have missed it as much as we did – we had a total of 28 kids and caregivers that fi rst week! It was a little crazy, but it was that good kind of crazy that makes you look forward to the next time. These Tot Times will continue at 10 a.m. throughout the school year. New novels this week include: Dishing the Dirt by M.C. Beaton, End Game by Catherine Coulter, Scam by Janet Evanovich, Fates and Furies by Lauren Groff, Corridors of the Night by Anne Perry, Above the Waterfall by Ron Rash, Devoted in Death by J.D. Robb and Make Me by Lee Child. In nonfi ction we got Al Roker’s book with the longest title ever: The storm of the century: tragedy, heroism, survival, and the epic true story of America's deadliest natural disaster: the great Gulf hurricane of 1900. See what I mean? That title is so long it took 2 colons! I don’t think I’ve ever seen that before. The book we had originally ordered in memory of Bill Peterson was cancelled, but when the kids book Llama Llama Gram and Grandpa arrived, I knew it was the perfect substitute. I’m pretty sure that Vicky Reuter will agree. Come, give it a read and see if you do too! Monday evening our Book Club will meet to discuss “Sacred Acre” by Mark Tabb. The shooting of Parkersburg coach Ed Thomas is almost one of those “Where were you when you heard the news?” moments for Iowans. I think we will have a great discussion. Hope you can join us at 7 p.m.!

Event Calendar• Tot Time every Monday at 10 a.m.• Tell Me a Yarn Mondays 5-7 p.m.

• Writers Free for All is 3rd Monday of the month at 7 p.m.

• Book Club is 4th Monday of the month at 7 p.m.

• Card Making is the 4th Tuesday of the month

ICA Carcass Challenge Participants can Sign up until Oct. 1 The Iowa Cattlemen’s Association is on the hunt for 2016 ICA Carcass Challenge entries. The Carcass Challenge, now in its fi fth year, is an ICA sponsored contest that provides Iowa cattlemen the opportunity to test the genetic performance of their feeder cattle. Proceeds generated from feeding Carcass Challenge steers help drive educational and leadership opportunities for ICA members, such as the Young Cattlemen’s Leadership Program and ICA feedlot and cow-calf forums. All steers are ranked in two categories: effi ciency and carcass quality. Carcass Challenge steer donors receive steer progress reports and data analysis throughout the feeding period. Steers are ranked on the “Retail Value per Days on Feed” category which scores the steers on their profi tability in the feedyard based on carcass characteristics and feed conversion. The “Carcass Merit” category ranks steers solely on grid price per pound, with discount allowances for small ribeye areas, low average daily gain, and excessive trimming. The top fi ve in each category receives an award and recognition during the awards banquet. In addition, individual awards will be given to the steers with the highest Average Daily Gain, largest Rib Eye Area, the top marbling score, and the chef award, which is for a 12-14” ribeye with the highest marbling score. Every Iowa cattle sector – seedstock, commercial cow-calf, backgrounder, and feedyard – plays a role in carcass quality. The ICA Carcass Challenge continually exemplifi es our state’s strength when it comes to cattle industry profi tability and potential using Iowa genetics and feedyard management. Right now, Iowa is well-positioned to successfully grow the beef business in our state. ICA’s Carcass Challenge is part of the effort. Commitment forms for the contest must be received by Oct. 1. Steers must be 2015 spring-born calves that weigh between 650 and 750 pounds on delivery, which will be Nov. 3 and 4. Steers must have received all their mandatory vaccinations, and be weaned for at least 21 days. Steers can be donated by individuals, county cattlemen’s associations, breed associations, and any business that would like to be involved. Details and the general guidelines about the contest are on the ICA website www.iacattlemen.org or call the ICA offi ce at 515-296-2266.

2016 Calendar Welcomes Guests of the GardenGardening buffs and nature lovers will fi nd planting and growing tips

Gardens are wonderful places to explore and relax. But how many other creatures are enjoying the garden’s beauty and produce? Each month, the Iowa State University Extension and Outreach’s 2016 Garden Calendar captivates with images of visiting guests of the garden. “For many, hosting birds, butterfl ies, bees and other creatures is one of the most rewarding aspects of gardening,” said Richard Jauron, horticulture specialist with ISU Extension and Outreach. “Desirable guests can be enticed to our gardens by providing food, water and shelter,” said Jauron. “Trees, shrubs, perennials and annuals provide food and shelter for wildlife, insects and other creatures. A nearby stream, garden pond or birdbath are sources of water. Consider leaving a part of the yard in natural state to attract bees, butterfl ies and other guests. Also, limit the use of pesticides,” Jauron said. Some guests, however, can be annoying and frustrating. Disinvite unwanted guests by depriving them of food and shelter. “Fencing and netting, for example, can be used to prevent hungry guests from eating plants in the garden,” said Jauron.

The large calendar grid offers space to plan and take notes on planting, plant growth, problems, harvest totals and other information. Tracking garden progress and recording invited or uninvited garden guests is fun and helpful. Gardening tips for the experienced gardener and novice provide reminders for a healthy and productive garden. Inside the calendar, 100 Iowa State University Extension and Outreach county offi ce phone numbers and locations are listed to easily request help from ISU Extension and Outreach horticulture experts and resources. Cost for this year’s calendar is $7 each.

Pocahontas County Afterschool Programs to be OfferedIowa State University Extension and Outreach Pocahontas County and Pocahontas County Conservation will partner to offer a once a month after school program at the Pocahontas Area Elementary School, Laurens Marathon Elementary School, Fonda Public Library, and the Rolfe Public Library. The programs will be the same, so children will need to sign up for just one location. Each month a different educational program, hands on craft/activity, and a snack will be offered to the children. Registration forms were distributed at the schools in the county and are available at the ISU Extension and Outreach Pocahontas County Offi ce. The program begins in October and all dates and locations are printed on the registration form. Please have your child signed up no later than October 1. For complete details or if you have any questions call 712-335-3103 or email [email protected].
