Parish Come Celebrate with Archbishop Paul –André Durocher Wednesday, November 30, will mark the fifth anniversary of the inauguration of Archbishop Paul André Durocher’s pastoral ministry in the Archdiocese of Gatineau. Archbishop Durocher invites everyone to join him on this occasion to celebrate the feast of Saint Andrew, Apostle, and to ask the Lord to continue to bless our local Church.. The Mass will take place at St. Joseph's Cathedral and will begin at 7:00 pm. Coffee and cookies will be served in the Church basement afterwards. The Advent Season has begun We have a number of activities which will take place during Advent, including Advent reflections after the 9:00 Mass on Thursday mornings, the Guignolée (Dec. 4), the Advent Penitential Service (Dec.13), St. Mark’s Fifth Annual Christmas Celebration of Love (December 17) and the decorating of the church for Christmas after the 11 Mass on December 18. Please mark these dates in your calendars.

Advent reflection booklets and discussion group To help us enter more deeply into this liturgical season, we will offer a weekly discussion groups for the four weeks of Advent. The group will meet immediately after the 9:00 Mass on Thursday mornings (Dec.1,8,15, and 22). We will discuss the week’s Scripture passages, using a booklet of reflections from the Word Made Flesh. Please feel free to join us! Advent candles and reading material available at the main entrance It takes a deliberate effort to keep the focus on Advent. One way to do this is to have an Advent wreath in your home. If you already have an Advent wreath, we will have sets of four Advent candles available for the next two Sundays for $10 per set. At the entrances of the church, you will also find prayer and reflection materials to help you experience the richness of Advent. Sunday Missals and the Missals for Young Catholics The Church year begins every year with the first Sunday of Advent. You can pick up your Sunday missals for the upcoming church year at the entrance of the church for $5. We also have a missal for children. Some families use these children’s missals to read the upcoming Scripture passages to their children during the week. What a wonderful way to help children become more engaged in the Mass! The cost of the children’s missals is $8.

Our Advent Giving Tree The Giving Tree is our attempt to reach out to those who are in need. The items collected will be given out to the guests at our Christmas Celebration of Love (see below for information on the Fifth Annual St. Mark’s Christmas Celebration of Love dinner). How it works: The angels on the tree were made by the families who participated in the Advent Event. Choose an angel from the tree. On it you will find a list of items for you to choose from. Bring your donation back to St. Mark’s by December 10th and we will prepare to hand them out at the dinner or through the Saint Vincent de Paul Society. Thank-you! Guignolée: Mark your calendars for Sunday, December 4 Formed in 1985, St.Mark’s local conference of the Society of St.Vincent de Paul (SSVP) is a manifestation of Jesus’ command to feed the hungry and care for the homeless. Its mission is to meet with the needy in our community and provide material, emotional and spiritual support. Every year, the Society of Saint Vincent de Paul organizes a Guignolée to collect donations and canned goods to prepare its Christmas baskets. All parishioners are invited to participate in a light lunch after the 11:00 a.m. Mass, and to join one of the many groups which leave from here to go door to door to collect money and food. If you are interested in leading a group with your friends and family members, please call Charles Gutta at 819-682-5822. Thursday, December 8: Feast of the Immaculate Conception Mary is one of the principal Advent figures. We honour her and let ourselves be inspired by her so that she may teach us to become Advent people – awake and awaiting the coming of Christ. Since this Feast Day is also an important day for Fr. John’s religious community, the Oblates of Mary Immaculate, he will be celebrating this feast with his brother Oblates in Ottawa in the evening. In light of this there will be a 9 AM Mass at St. Mark’s and also a Liturgy of the Word with Scripture and song to celebrate together the Feast of the Immaculate Conception, December 8 at 7:00 p.m.

Knights of Columbus – Christmas Baskets You are all aware of the Christmas Baskets, which originate from the mayor's breakfast. All the baskets do not necessarily come from that source. The other source is generous people or organisations that sponsor families. Now if you would like to sponsor a family just leave your name and telephone number on the Saint Vincent de Paul voice mail (819-685-1343) and André Sirois will be delighted to give you all the details you might want to know in order to sponsor a family.

Stars on the Christmas tree: is there one for your family? After the 11:00 o'clock Mass on the last Sunday of Advent (December 18), we will be decorating the church for Christmas. We will put up a big Christmas tree at the entrance to the church, which will be decorated with many gold stars. Each star has the name of one of the families in our parish. Please note that the names on the tree are those of registered parishioners only – another good reason to pick up a parishioner registration form at the back of the church and return it to a hospitality minister or to Fr. John. Fall clean-up bee – THANKS! Thank you to all the volunteers that were able to come out for the yard clean-up on November 19. It was much appreciated!

Keep Christ in Christmas The Knights of Columbus are sponsoring a Poster Contest "Keep Christ in Christmas" for Children 5 to 14 years old. Contest Entry. We will collect the Posters on Dec.11th from 10 to 11a.m. 2017 Collection Envelopes Collection envelopes will be available for pick-up after all the Masses on December 17 & 18. Operations Christmas Child Thanks to everyone who packed a box for Operation Christmas Child. We will make 131 children happier this Christmas!!! Youth Group Spaghetti Fundraising Dinner – DATE CHANGE The St. Mark's Youth Group will be hosting a spaghetti dinner fundraiser on Saturday, December 10th at 6:00 p.m. downstairs in the Church Hall. Dinner plate cost will be $8.00 per person with proceeds going to the Youth Group. There will also be deserts available for purchase for those who have a sweet tooth!! So that we may prepare the correct amount of food, please sign up on the "Spaghetti dinner" sheets that are available throughout the church if you intend on coming. All are welcome!
