Organ Music for Masses August 20/21
Prelude: Laudate Dominum, omnes gentes (Ps. 117) W.A. Mozart (1756-91) Postlude: Ar hyd y nos, from Seven Folk Tune Sketches for Organ. Dale Wood (1934-2003)
Today’s prelude is by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. It is his setting of today’s Responsorial Psalm, the 117th and shortest of the psalms: "Praise the LORD, all you nations! Extol him, all you peoples! His mercy for us is strong; the faithfulness of the LORD is forever. Hallelujah!” It was originally written for soprano, choir, and strings, but it transfers quite comfortably to the organ because of Mozart’s economical writing - there are really only ever three lines at once: the melody in the voices, the accompanying arpeggios of the strings, and the bass line, which can be played by an organist’s right hand, left hand, and feet.
The postlude is by Californian organist Dale Wood, and is based on the tune of our final hymn “For the Fruits of This Creation.” There is no law which mandates that a postlude must be loud, and this Welsh folk tune lends itself well to Wood’s characteristically introspective and romantic treatment.

St. Catharine Church Masses
Aug 27-28
Musical accompaniment at the Masses at St.
Catharine this weekend (August 27/28) will
be provided by Paul Todd and Paul Todd Jr.
Paul Todd is the Liturgical Music Director at
St. Agnes Church in Naples Florida and he,
and his son, Paul Todd Jr., are putting on a
concert at St. Catharine Church on Monday
evening at 7.00PM. The concert will be a
combination of sacred music, Broadway
favorites and original compositions.
Tickets are available for $25.
Recently, as part of my Summer reading, I picked up a
book that I had read a couple of years ago called “The
Jesuit Guide to (almost) Everything; A Spirituality for
Everyday Life.” It has taken me back to a practice that I
learned well, and practiced every day when I was a novice
in the Redemptorist Congregation. It is a practice of
prayer that has its origins in the Spiritual Exercises of St.
Ignatius of Loyola. He called it the Examen, or the
examination of conscience, or more correctly the
examination of consciousness.
It is a simple process of prayer that generations of
Christians have found to be practical and useful. If you
are looking for something to pick up your spiritual life as
you relax in the Summer, you might be interested in this.
The Examen has five easy steps. It can (and should) be
done at least once a day for 15 minutes. Here is how it
goes.
The first step is gratitude. You recall the good things
that have happened during the day and you give thanks for
them. By good things (or “benefits” as St. Ignatius called
them) he referred to a very broad array of experiences,
from good news, to a tender moment with a spouse or
loved one, to finishing an important project at work, and
also less obvious things like the surprising sight of
sunlight on the pavement in the middle of a bleak winter
day, the sight of the daffodils pushing through the winter
earth, or the taste of a ham-and-cheese sandwich for lunch,
or the smile on the face of your child.
For Ignatius many things – no matter how
inconsequential – are occasions for gratitude.
The second step is asking for the grace to “know my
sins” – to be able to see where you have turned away from
the deepest and truest part of yourself. Where you have
acted contrary to your better judgment, or to the voice of
God inside you. It refers to things such as the time you
joined in a mean conversation about another person, or
treated a person without respect, or did not respond to a
person’s need. It reminds you of how you failed to
respond to God’s will for you during the day, and when
you failed to bother, or when you failed to be more loving.
To grow spiritually, you have to start by acknowledging
your failures.
The third and central step is a review of your day. Think of your day as a movie in your head, and hit the
play button, and run through your day from morning to
night. Recall what made you happy, what made you sad,
what made you feel stressed, what confused you, what
helped you to be more loving.
Recall everything; the sights, the sounds the feelings, the
tastes, the textures, the conversations. You may discover
God’s presence and his action in places and events where
you never would have thought to look before.
The fourth step is asking forgiveness from God for
anything sinful that you have done during the day. This
may inspire you to go to confession at some time in the
future. You may also feel inspired to ask someone for
forgiveness
The fifth and final step is to ask God for the grace of
his help during the next day, and then you can close by
saying any prayer that you like. St. Ignatius always closed
with the Our Father.
This prayer, or Examen, builds on the insight that often it
is easier to see God looking back rather than in the actual
moment. If you practice it, eventually you will begin to
notice patterns of God’s activity in your life. You may
find yourself thinking: That’s interesting. I never
noticed that before, or, maybe I should tell that person
how grateful I am for his/her friendship. You may also
find yourself becoming more aware of the presence of
God in your life every day.
Again, in summary: here are the 5 steps of this form of
prayer;
1. Gratitude: Recalling the good things that have
happened that day and giving thanks
2. Review: Recalling all the events and experiences of
the day and noticing where you accepted or turned away
from invitations to grow in love
3. Sorrow: Recall any actions that you regret and are
sorry for
4. Forgiveness: Ask God for his forgiveness, and
consider whether you need to ask someone’s forgiveness
Grace: Ask God for the grace you need for the next day to
see God’s presence in your life more clearly.

Little Christine from St. Kizito School was given the gift of a cow
from her sponsor, Stephanie Bricken. This cow will allow her
family to produce their own milk products. They will be able to
make butter and cheese to be sold in the local market near their
home as well as provide food for themselves and be a more self-
sustaining family.
Candlelight Ball 2016
The 50th Gala Candlelight Ball took place last
Saturday August 13. By all reports it was a re-
sounding success and a very joyous event that
made parishioners hark back to Candlelight
Balls of the past when this event was a big end-of
Summer celebration in Spring Lake. Of course it
was not a success by accident; it was a success be-
cause of the year long planning and hard work a
dedicated committee, and especially because of the
dedicated work of Susan Keating and Lisa Cole.
Out thanks to the Committee for a job very well
done: Peg & Frank Ciufo, Lisa & George Cole,

Faith in our Future
There will be an open house style meeting for parishioners from the 5 parishes in Cohort 19 at St. Rose Church in Belmar, this Sunday, August 20 at 2.00PM to discuss and provide the opportunity to hear the thoughts and opinions of parishioners in relation to the recommendations of the Diocesan Planning Commission. In case you have forgot, the Commission recommended that Ascension parish in Bradley Beach, St. Elizabeth parish in Avon, and St. Rose in Belmar be merged into one parish at St. Rose, and that either St. Elizabeth or Ascension be kept open for the celebration of Mass. The member parishes of cohort 19, which includes St. Catharine-St. Margaret, are required to formally respond to the Planning Commission before October

Those who “winter” in South Florida will recognize Paul Todd and Paul Todd Jr. and be excited to have the opportunity
to attend on of their renowned concerts. Paul is a critically acclaimed prolific writer, entertainer, composer, arranger,
singer, and Music Director at St. Agnes Catholic Parish in Naples, Florida. He has been amazing crowds since he won
the prestigious National Yamaha Keyboard contest at the young age of fourteen. In the past, he has opened for such
celebrities as The Pointer Sisters, Rich Little, the Gatlin Brothers, and Joan Rivers. He has performed on Broadway with
Broadway greats: Hinton Battle, Carla Burns, and Danielle Furland. As a Christian artist, he has worked with some of
his favorites including, Amy Grant, Michael W. Smith and Phil Driscol. He has been a parish musical director for 16
years in Naples, and has raised money for parish missions, vocations, food banks and disaster relief. In 2005 Paul
established the Paul Todd Charities, Inc. to help further his ministry. Since its founding, the charity has raised hundreds
of thousands of dollars to help organizations like the Harry Chapin Food Bank, the YMCA, St. Vincent De Paul Society.
Paul and his son continue to astound and spiritually inspire people with their music.
Paul Todd Jr is also an accomplished entertainer, singer/song writer and worship leader. In 2014, Paul Jr. opened for
Lee Greenwood at the Lee Civic Center in Fr. Myers Florida. He has also done several sold-out solo performances at the
Broadway Palm Dinner Theater in Fr. Myers, Florida, and later released his first album, “The Great American
Songbook: Volume1”, which features unforgettable songs from crooning greats like Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Franki
Valli, and Bobby Darin. He cites legends like Darin, Sinatra, and of course, his father as his primary inspirations. Like
his father, Paul Jr is a gifted song writer, having written the song “One Star” which is a tribute to our men in uniform
and is currently co-writing a brand new musical with his Dad titled “Under construction: The Musical”, which will
open later in 2016. You can find out more about the duo by visiting their websites at www.paultodd.com or
www.paultoddjr.com
On a personal note, I was privileged to be at St. Agnes Church in Naples, Fla. Two years ago when Paul’s eldest son
was ordained to the priesthood by the Bishop of the Diocese of Leeds, England. At that time, I talked to Paul, and
asked him to consider bringing his enormous talent and spiritual vision to St. Catharine-St. Margaret parish, and
Paul and his son are excited to come here.
In addition to the concert on August 29 (Monday evening), Paul and his son will play at the Masses at St. Catharine
Church on the weekend of August 27/28. I expect that at that time there will be a big rush for tickets to his concert, so I
encourage you to reserve a ticket now in advance, because seating is limited. Tickets are $25.
