From the Pastor’s Corner
Each year, this season of Advent comes around. We bless another candle this second week in
Advent. Let us ask God to bless our family:
God of new messengers,
this Sunday you tell us in your Gospel
“I am sending my messenger ahead of you.”
Help us to be your messengers
of peace and reconciliation
as we journey through
this second week of Advent.
Second Sunday of Advent
The countercultural John the Baptist may have had an odd
sense of style by our standards (he wore camel hair) and he may
have consumed an unappealing diet (locusts and wild honey), but he
had his finger on the pulse of what really mattered. He needed little
in the way of worldly comforts because he was consumed with his
task of spiritually preparing those who were willing to hear for the
One who would come to baptize with the power of the Holy Spirit. What mattered was this future
revelation, and John would let nothing that belongs to this earthly existence get in the way of his
preparation for that revelation.
In his second letter, Peter tells us that all will dissolve away and through holiness and
devotion we will be made ready for the Lord's coming. The trends we get caught up in will seem
empty and meaningless. All that will remain is God and those created in his image, and the
relationships we have between us.
What matters to you, right here and right now, on this Second Sunday of Advent? We don't
have to trade in brand-name clothes for camel hair, but we need to ask ourselves: if we were
called to give it all away tomorrow for Jesus, would we be mature enough to do so? The answer
to this question lies at the heart of stewardship.
When we light this second candle on our
wreath,
let us bring your light
to our friends and neighbors this week.
We ask this through Christ,
who is the Light of the world.
Amen.
The Advent Wreath is an Old German tradition seen throughout the world, used in
homes & churches to prepare our hearts to celebrate the birth of Christ.
●Circle-shaped wreath, a symbol of eternity, reminds us that God has no beginning and
no end. Evergreens symbolize eternal life and a reminder that God is unchangeable.
The three purple candles remind us of the penitential nature of the Advent season.
1st purple candle-the Candle of Hope; we have hope because God will keep the promises
He has made.
2nd purple candle-the Candle of Preparation reminds us to “get ready” to welcome Jesus!
3rd purple candle (lit the 4th Sunday of Advent) the Candle of Love reminds us that God sent His Son because
He loves us!
4th rose/pink candle, the Candle of Joy (lit on the 3rd Sunday of Advent) as Gaudete Sunday is taken from the
entrance antiphon, “Rejoice (gaudete) in the Lord always, again I say, rejoice!” It shows that the end of
Advent, our waiting, draws near and we are overjoyed at the coming of the King! Sometimes there
is a fifth spotless white candle in the center of the wreath, the Christ Candle – a reminder that Christ
is the pure Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world. This candle is traditionally lit on
Christmas Day.

Remembering children who have died
2017 Annual Worldwide Candle Lighting
THIS Sunday, Dec. 10, 2017 at 6:45 PM
Burnett & White Funeral Home
91 East Market Street, Rhinebeck, NY
For hundreds of years, lighting a candle has been a
way to show respect for those that have died. This
beautiful gesture shows that although someone may be
gone from this world, their memory will endure, and
the light of their flame will continue to inspire and
guide others. Worldwide Candle Lighting Day is a
celebration of solidarity and memory. It’s a day on
which people around the world gather to light candles
for children who have died and to show that they will
always be loved and never forgotten.
The candles are lit at the same time in
every time zone, meaning that a
consistent warm glow passes around
the planet for a full 24-hour day.
