11th Sunday in Ordinary Time

T

his is how it is with the kingdom of God." What is a kingdom? Is it

the brick and mortar that build up the castle? Is it the expanse of land

a king can reasonably defend? Our notions of kingdoms may be romanticized in the modern era,

but for the Israelites, a kingdom held deep historical meaning. Thousands of years before the birth

of Christ, the Israelites had asked God for a king. After the reigns of David and Solomon, the

united kingdom dissolved into factions, and the land was conquered by the Assyrians,

Babylonians, and, finally, Romans. For the Israelites, a kingdom was something to build, both

structurally and civilly. While this had ended in ruin for their ancestors, many of Jesus'

contemporaries longed for the restoration of an earthly kingdom.

Jesus' words in today's Gospel are a radical departure from this perspective. He compares the

Kingdom of God to a field, but it appears that the farmer has little to do with its progress. "The

seed would sprout and grow, he knows not how. Of its own accord, the land yields fruit." Jesus

introduces his followers to a new sort of kingdom, a kingdom where God provides the growth.

There is work to be done, of course. "When the grain is ripe, he wields the sickle at once, for

the harvest has come." But for the Kingdom of God to flourish, there are certain things that are

outside of our control. We sow seeds of kindness, justice, and integrity and then we must be

patient. As shoots of faith appear, we nurture the growth with encouragement. As Christians, our

task is not to build the Kingdom of God under our power alone, but to trust in the life-giving

movement of God.

Men are rediscovering the importance of the spiritual life. And Father Larry

Richards is helping them do it. While some writers apply a one-size-fits-all

approach to the Christian life, Father Richards draws on his many years of

ministry and his own experience as a man to inspire other men as men. In Be a

Man!, he recounts his struggles to learn true manhood, as well as the inspiring

stories of others he has served in his decades as a priest.

St. Stephen was one of the first ordained deacons of

the Church and also the First Christian Martyr. He

is the patron saint of deacons, headaches,

horses, coffin makers, and masons. He is often

represented carrying a pile of rocks or with

rocks on his head. His behavior, forgiving

those who were stoning him to death, was a

beautiful reflection of how obedient he truly

was to the Lord Jesus Christ and His teachings.

A Prayer for Fathers

God our Father,

we give you thanks and praise

for fathers young and old.

We pray for young fathers,

newly embracing their vocation;

May they find the courage and

perseverance to balance work,

family, and faith in joy and

sacrifice.

We pray for our own fathers

who have supported and challenged us;

May they continue to lead in strong and gentle ways.

We remember fathers around the world

whose children are lost or suffering;

May they know that the God of compassion

walks with them in their sorrow.

We pray for men who are not fathers

but still mentor and guide us

with fatherly love and advice

We remember fathers, grandfathers,

and great-grandfathers who are no longer with us

but who live forever in our memory

and nourish us with their love.

Amen

Rededication Ceremony for the Memorial of the

Unborn Child

June 24, at 1:30PM

St. Christopher’s School, 30 Benner Rd.

Come join us in the rededication of this stone. The

Knights of Columbus Council originally installed the

stone at St. Sylvia’s Church and it will be moved to

the 30 Benner Rd. site. The stone will be placed near

the new flag pole and new flags will also be provided

even one that was flown over the U.S. Capitol

obtained by Congressman John Faso.

Thank you Knights of Columbus for all your hard

work involved with the rededication of this

significant Memorial.

TAG SALE SHOUT OUT!

A BIG THANK YOU to all who helped with the Tag

Sale! Special thanks to Gina McCrudden and the

group of volunteers who collected, sorted, priced,

set-up, sold, and took down the sale. Thank you to all

who supported it by volunteering in all sorts of ways,

such as shopping and working the sale. Thank you to

those who heeded the call to volunteer. It is an

immense job, but with the help of so many, it indeed,

made it lighter work!
