From the Pastor’s Corner
16th Sunday in Ordinary Time
T he weeds are the children of the evil one, and the
enemy who sows them is the devil." This is not a
pretty picture. Jesus shares a parable in today's Gospel
that reminds us of a truth we would rather forget: evil is
real, and the devil is at work. The bountiful harvest of
our faith is something that Satan wants to destroy. And
he has a host of diabolical tactics to help him carry out his wicked plans. But there is one strategy
in particular that we must be on guard against.
As the French poet Charles Baudelaire put it, "The devil's finest trick is to persuade you
that he does not exist." Sneaky as it may be, this approach is effective! And, unfortunately, the
attitude of our modern era is very conducive to buying the lie. Too often we dismiss the idea of
the invisible spiritual reality of angels and demons. It doesn't seem "scientific" enough for us
because it can't be seen or "proven." But neither can our faith! We believe in a host of invisible
realities starting with God himself. We should not be fooled into thinking that the devil is a
make-believe cartoon character with red horns and a pitchfork on his shoulder. Alas, no. As the
Catechism of the Catholic Church reminds us, "Scripture witnesses to the disastrous influence
of the one Jesus calls 'a murderer from the beginning'" (CCC 394) and, as we read in the Bible,
"Indeed, the Son of God was revealed to destroy the works of the Devil" (1 Jn 3:8). This is not
pretend, and so it must be taken seriously. But so too, the reality of Satan must be situated within
the broader context of God's supreme power. The devil "cannot prevent the building up of God's
reign" (CCC 395). The influence of evil can never defeat the power of our faith, unless we let it
do so.

BLOOD DRIVE
Parish Center, 30 Benner Rd.
8 AM—2 PM Emergency Blood Shortage - Donate today to replenish the community's critically low blood supply. Blood is the lifeline of our body.
40,000 pints are transfused each day in the U.S. – to save the lives of cancer patients, accident, burn,
& trauma victims, newborn babies, mothers delivering babies, transplant patients, surgery patients and others in need.
God works in many different ways. Most of the time, God works through ordinary people and events - a parent, a spouse, a friend, a beautiful sunset, a song, or an inspiring story. Other times, we hear God’s call during major life changes - an engagement, marriage, a birth, or in crisis moments - a sickness, a death. Sometimes, we just have a feeling that something is missing. In the Rite of Christian Initiation we help people learn how to respond to God’s call not just for the moment but also for each day of their lives. If you’re thinking God might be calling you or someone you know to become Catholic, or if you have questions or would like more information about RCIA, please leave a message for Maggie Burud @
845-758-3732 or email [email protected]
NEXT WEEKEND JULY 29 & 30...For my Girl Scout Gold Award Project, I will be enhancing our parish Religious Ed. Program by setting up a library exchange and tote bag system! At all masses, I will provide more details and ask for donations. Thank You For Your Support!

You have seen these signs by the brick bridge in the parking lot. What do they mean? Our gardeners have been busy planting around the bridge and have learned through experience that exhaust from backing into the spaces kills the plants. So let’s help the beauty survive by parking forward in those spaces. Thank you!

God of our ancestors, we thank you for our children and our children's children. They are reminders from you about how precious life can be. We humbly ask for wisdom and patience as we take pride and wonder in our grandchildren.
Those of us who now pray to you also seek your blessing upon these men and women who are our grandparents or who act in place of grandparents. Bless all the children and their parents and grandparents with your abundant grace. We ask all this through the intercession Blessed Virgin Mary, patron saints of grandparents,
in the power of the Holy Spirit. Amen.
