Lovely Lent….
Soon Lent will be upon us. Wouldn't it be great if in this election year our politicians were to give up trying to score points against each other in the race to No10? Think what they might then actually achieve in those forty days.
Lent should be liberating. It is the annual spiritual spring clean for Christians and as it invites us to look towards Easter it should put a spring in our step. The reality of course is that the politicians will go on as they do, making us glum enough as it is, so please don't treat Lent as a gloomy time! We will need all the light relief from the electioneering we can get.
The main biblical story behind the idea of Lent is Jesus' time of testing in the wilderness, which prepared him for his mission. In the desert heat he forged his manifesto. He had to steer deliberately away from pursuing the easy popular vote. He was going to be offering something other than the 'bread and circuses' slogan by which the might of Rome sought to quell its occupied empire. He was offering something other, we might easily forget, than religion. He was giving himself in a way no earthly leader can do and to do so he needed to be sure who he really was. He had to be secure in his relationship with God, his heavenly father.

News from St Saviour’s…….
As we pull away into the New Year it is fun to remember Christmas festivities and enjoyment. St
Saviour’s played its part with four services ‐ the familiar carols and lessons service, the crib service
and midnight mass on Christmas Eve and communion on Christmas Day before the turkey. All were
well attended and warmly officiated. The church was beautifully
decorated and glowed in the winter light. A thank you is due to those
who supported the Tree of Remembrance, raising over £200, and the
Open House Charity box, and of course another special thank you is
due to all ‐ clergy, organists and parishioners ‐ who worked so hard to
achieve yet another ‘St Saviour’s at Christmas’ to remember.
Our ArchDeacon, Fiona Windsor, will visit the PCC later in February. She will be
consulting on the future of our parish and this will be opportunity for any of us to
feed ideas and views into the process.
Colgate Village Hall Christmas Dance….
The Christmas dance held in the village hall in December was a huge success with a full house
having a great time celebrating the festive season.
Not only did everyone enjoy themselves with some superb music and food, we also ran a raffle and
all proceeds from the evening were donated to the Chestnut Tree Children’s Hospice, who
received a cheque for £300. We could not think of a more worthy cause, at this time of year more
than any other.
We will be organising another dance later in the year so keep your eyes open on the Parish News
for more information.

After a good many years as secretary to the PCC, Rosemary Lane has decided now is the time to
give up the role. She was certainly serving in this capacity when I took on the parish in 1998 so this
represents a generous stint by any standards. During this time we have had five church wardens.

heartfelt thanks to her patience and efficiency.

Cuppa & Chat

We have now been meeting at Cuppa & Chat for three years and it is as popular as ever with an average, over last year, of 16 people coming to each gathering. During last year our clientele ranged from those between the ages of 8 weeks and 90, all coming together as a community and often sharing home produce. Our special fundraising event was very popular and this year benefitted The British Heart Foundation. We finished the year with lots of laughter at a Christmas meal at the Dragon Pub for 15 of us plus 1 dog.

Gardener’s Journal By now those hyacinths and other bulbs planted for forcing back in November should be bursting into flower and livening up indoor spots on gloomy winter days. Outside, recent mild conditions have persuaded cherries, camellias and early rhododendrons to open up and the first snowdrops are in flower. Daffodils are well out of the ground. It is time to weed and clean up flower beds, adding manure or compost, to prune roses, fuchsias, penstemon, honeysuckle, wisteria and other summer flowerers and to trim summer heathers. In the vegetable garden sets of onions and shallots can be planted outside and broad beans will not be far behind. Netting may be needed to protect them from mice and birds. Raised beds need repair with new timbers for the coming season. Last season’s harvest continues to come in. Leeks, carrots and parsnips have all done well, and purple sprouting broccoli looks promising for spring. Summer raspberries should be cut back to a yard high, and autumn raspberries to the ground. Strawberry beds will need weeding and feeding. Potatoes can be placed in egg cartons in the greenhouse for chitting; when ready try container planting in a warm sunny spot. Sweet peas, tomatoes and lettuces can also be sown in the greenhouse in response to lengthening days. However recent activity suggests a few mousetraps might be needed
Continue to remove rotting vegetation from the fish pond and keep up the supply of food in this mild weather. Protect from hungry herons!
In the woods the woodpeckers are drumming to claim territory and by night owls and foxes call looking f or mates. The weather has been kind to birds so far, but additional nourishment in bird feeders will now be appreciated and generate life and activity in these winter months. And in the long evenings load the wood stove and study favourite catalogues!

There’s no way of telling what the weather might be like this winter – but you can make sure that you are as prepared as possible for every eventuality.
West Sussex County Council will have new webpages on its website at www.westsussex.gov.uk/snow from mid to late November, where residents can find out more about how to cope in snow and ice conditions.
You can look up which roads the County Council is able to grit, read about how the County Council prepares in the event of bad weather, and also about what you can do.
In addition Colgate Parish Council invested in grit bins and salt last winter. The purpose of this was so residents are able to access the salt to distribute on roads and pathways to help keep the villages moving. Salt bins are located at key positions within the village:

There are some simple things we can all do to prepare for winter and the weather it might bring:
Check on vulnerable or elderly family and neighbours – they may need your support in bad weather
Don’t use water to clear snow and ice, it will refreeze and become more dangerous
Don’t travel unless you have to and make sure your vehicle is ready for cold weather
Be prepared – keep a supply of provisions in case of bad weather Mobile phones and social media such as Facebook and Twitter are an excellent
and easy way to keep in touch during severe weather events. Make sure you share your details with your neighbours
Make sure you dress appropriately for the weather conditions, especially footwear

All welcome to guided, free, sociable, HDC walks led by trained volunteers; no need to book, just

The Extraordinary World of Insects By Mike Russell, Senior Wildlife Advisor, Sussex Wildlife Trust When it comes to the natural world, it has to be conceded that insects do not figure highly in terms of wildlife that we admire. Yes, we can appreciate and marvel at the dragon and damselflies in their aerial dexterity and enjoy the
butterflies that visit our garden, but perhaps not the moths that fly around our lights at night. Bees we know are vitally important and are fine if they keep their distance and we all love ladybirds, except those horrible invasive harlequins that arrived on our shores a few years ago. Generally, we don't like insects. They invade our homes, buzz annoyingly around our heads and at worst sting us, eat our wood, flowers and vegetables and can ruin an alfresco lunch. However, they are perhaps the most important layer in the food chain, and are great survivors, long after
human beings have disappeared from our planet insects will still be around. Putting our prejudices aside, when you look at some of our more familiar species there are some fascinating insights into their world to be discovered. Take aphids for example, probably the most destructive of garden pests and something you really don't want to see on your roses. It has been calculated that a single aphid can produce about 10 million tonnes of progeny during a single summer season, a figure beyond comprehension! Of course most end up as food for all sorts of other wildlife and therefore this overwhelming number is never reached. They produce so many offspring as they don't have the messy business of having to mate. Earwigs on the other hand are far more caring parents; at least the females are as they tend to their young throughout the winter deep in the soil. The mythology surrounding earwigs is, as the name suggests, that they are thought to enter people's ears which is probably unfounded, though Stefan Buczacki in his book 'Fauna Britannica' cites the story of a Cornishman who was so distracted by the pain in his head that he asked the local butcher to chop off his ear, and as he lay his ear down on the chopping board an earwig fell out and the pain ceased from that day. Such is the stuff of myths and legends! Insects are at the bottom end of the food chain and so life is a battle to prevent being eaten. Some devise devious colour schemes to warn predators that they might be distasteful or
provide large false eyes to make the attacker think that their potential prey is much bigger than it really is. One of the most ingenious methods is that of the froghopper which, when in it's in the larval stage produces a frothy liquid that conceals it from hungry foes. You are probably familiar
with this as it's commonly known as 'cuckoo spit', on account that it appears about the same time as the cuckoo returns from Africa. The next time a fly or wasp buzzes around your head or woodlice invade your home try and think about the amazing way this life form has evolved over millions of years and that is just much part of the intricate web of life as we are, which may then just curb your natural instinct to carry out their wholesale destruction.
