Sixth Sunday in Ordinary Time

Second Reading: 1 Corinthians 3:16-23Paul continued to challenge the Corinthians about true wis-dom. We are holy as we accept that we belong to God. But God’s wisdom is far beyond human wisdom. Human “wis-dom” is foolishness in God’s eyes because of the vanity of those who are considered wise by society.

First Reading: Leviticus 19:1-2, 17-18The book of the Pentateuch deals with how people should behave. The Israelites are called to be holy, by obeying God’s ideals.

Gospel: Matthew 5:38-48The old law valued what was considered fair. The new law is love: love those who have harmed you and pray for them. We are called to rise above what is fair and aspire to the love that Jesus Christ has demonstrated to us.

Next Week: Eighth Sunday in Ordinary TimeFirst Reading: Isaiah 49:14-15

Second Reading: 1 Corinthians 4:1-5Gospel: Matthew 6:24-34

From the Desk of Fr. Paul February 19, 2017No More False Illusions

Mission StatementWith the Eucharist as our source, Mary as our patroness and the Holy Spirit as our guide, we the Roman Catholic Parish of Immaculate Conception and Assumption of Our Lady, Tuckahoe, seek to give meaning to our faith by following Christ’s command to care for His people, by fostering actions that nourish both the spiritual and social needs of our people and build community within and

without our parish.

It was very early one morning, before sunrise, and my spiritual father, who runs a retreat house for priests and reli-gious, as was his custom, went into the chapel and began to do his morning meditation. After a few minutes in that chapel, with his eyes fixed on the tabernacle, in the flickering light of the few candles lit in front of the icons there, he suddenly became aware of another presence. Someone was present, kneeling before the Blessed Sacrament and had begun to weep. He couldn’t make out who it was and did not wish to disturb the person; so Father said his prayers quietly for the man, who was obviously upset.

About an hour later, when the light of dawn began to shine through the windows, the figure stood up and began to walk toward him. It was none other than a bishop from another diocese who was on retreat. Father, not wishing to pry, gently said to him, “Excellency, are you alright?” The bishop responded, “I was kneeling before the Blessed Sacrament and something that had never happened before happened! Jesus spoke to me. It was clearly He, Himself! He said to me, ‘ …, the problem with you is that you, in all these years, have never, ever, fallen in love with me!’ ” This was why the bishop had been weeping.

It might sound strange to us, but it is possible to treat our Catholic faith as a job and even be very good at all the ex-ternals surrounding our religion, but to have missed the boat, so to speak, and never fallen in love with Christ. He is the reason for all the rest! That bishop’s life was changed forever. The moment of truth had come! Christ challenged him directly to get his act together.

In a week and a half, the great season of Lent will begin. It is a time to face the truth about Christ, and yourself, and your relationship to Our Savior. Peter Kreeft described what happens when we take the Lord seriously: “Perhaps the most shattering consequence of Jesus’ Real Presence, which is brought about by invoking His Name, is that we be-come unable to lie to ourselves anymore. He is light, and wherever He inserts His Lordship, there is now an absolute necessity of honesty and a zero tolerance for any form of self-deception, self-congratulation, even those forms that felt necessary, natural and most innocent before. He is gentle, but He is light and He simply will not coexist with any darkness at all; either He casts it out or it keeps Him out. … He subtracts our falsehoods … He gives a clarification of our vision.”

So, Lent will begin, and with it, the challenge to take our relationship with the Lord seriously. We must face the sometimes-disturbing truth about ourselves so that we can change and grow. So, men, man up; and women, woman up this Lent. The excuses must stop if we are to grow. Though it could cause you to weep!

77. Why do Catholics venerate relics?

The saints were ordinary people, like us; but they had an extraordinary love for God. Relics, their remains and per-sonal possessions, represent those who are in glory with God. Just as we treasure things that once belonged to someone we loved or admired, such as a piece of cloth-ing or jewelry, we treasure the relics of saints. Although relics themselves have no special properties, venerating them reminds us of the virtuous examples of the saints.

Here at Immaculate Conception Church we venerate the first-class relic of St. Catherine Labouré on Mondays af-ter the 12 noon Mass and after Reposition of the Blessed Sacrament. St. Catherine was a member of the Daugh-ters of Charity of Saint Vincent de Paul. She lived in the 19th century, and gave us the Miraculous Medal and the Novena following apparitions of Our Blessed Mother in Paris, France.

If you have questions about any aspect of our Catholic Church and Faith, just drop us a note or call and we will answer them to the best of our ability.

Heart Disease is the one disease that affects almost everyone in one way or another,

through having the disease or knowing some-one with the disease.

Heart Disease is the leading cause of death in the United States. It is evenly distributed between men and women. Every year, close to 800,000 Americans experience their first heart attack. For people with heart disease, studies have shown that reducing cholesterol and blood pressure can decrease the risks of dying from heart disease, hav-ing a non-fatal heart attack, or needing bypass surgery or angioplasty. For those who do not have heart disease, lowering cholesterol and blood pressure can reduce the risk of developing heart disease.

Hypertension

Blood pressure is determined by the amount of blood your heart pumps and the amount of resistance the blood flow meets in the arteries. The more your heart pumps and the narrower your arteries are from narrowing (plaque build up) the higher your blood pressure will be.

Hypertension is a condition that can increase one’s risk of heart attack and stroke without any symptoms what-soever. Known as “the silent killer,” hypertension can develop over many years without any symptoms. Dull headaches, dizzy spells, and nose bleeds may only appear when the blood pressure reaches a dangerously unsafe level.

Primary Hypertension refers to hypertension that has developed with no identifiable cause. This is the case for about 90-95% of people diagnosed with hypertension.

Secondary hypertension refers to hypertension that is caused by another medical condition. Some of these con-ditions include: kidney abnormalities, tumors of the ad-renal gland, congenital heart defects, certain medications, and illegal drugs, such as cocaine and methamphetamine.

What and When areDays of Fast?

During days of fast (Ash Wednesday and Good Fri-day), Catholics aged 18-59 restrict their food intake to one full meal, two smaller meals, and no eating between meals.

What and When areDays of Abstinence?

During days of abstinence, Catholics 14 and older do not eat meat or fowl but are allowed to eat eggs, milk products, and condiments made of animal fat. Abstinence does not include meat juices and liquid foods made from meat (chicken broth, consommé, meat gravies or sauces, etc.). Ash Wednesday and every Friday in Lent are days of

abstinence.
