The 2020 MASS INTENTION BOOK is now open for those who wish to have Mass offered for their loved ones. There is one book for our parish (Our Saviour and Sacred Hearts). Please call the Parish Office at Our Saviour or stop by during office hours.

Dear Parishioners: Next weekend I will celebrate Sunday Mass at the annual meeting of the New York State legislators at the SOMOS conference in Puerto Rico. At that same meeting, Catholic Charities will receive an award for the important and long-term work done in the aftermath of Hurricane Maria to help the people of Puerto Rico recover from this devastating natural disaster. I mention this not only to let you know that I will not be here next weekend, but more so to point out that in the midst of so much darkness and difficulty for the Catholic Church there is explicit recognition of the important work that we do. And sometimes this credit is even given by those who oppose us on certain core values. In addition, it is positive that the conference, for the first time this year, has made room in its schedule for the celebration of Sunday Mass. Both are positive signs in what sometimes can be a dismal landscape. They encourage us to continue our faithfulness in challenging times. I will remember our parish in the Mass I celebrate next Sunday. – Msgr. Kevin Sullivan

MARIAN CONSECRATION His Eminence, Cardinal Dolan is offering an opportunity to bring to our Archdiocesan family something of a spiritual conversion, a light within the darkness of these troubled times. All are invited to consider joining in consecrating themselves to the Blessed Virgin Mary on the Feast of the Immaculate Conception, which is observed this year on Monday, 9 December. Through the goodness of the Office of Young Adult Outreach, we have received 160 copies of the consecration book, 33 Days to Morning Glory. They are in the narthex and you may take one home. These consecration books map out everything you need to know. Please take one home and use it with your family.

THE HOLY SOULS IN NOVEMBER It is a pious tradition to devote extra time in prayer for the Holy Souls in Purgatory during the month of November. An indulgence, applicable only to the Souls in Purgatory, may be obtained by those who devoutly visit a cemetery and pray, even if only mentally, for the departed. The indulgence is plenary each day from the 1 to 8 of November. On all other days of the year it is partial. In order to receive these indulgences, you must be free from all attachment to sin, including venial sin, pray for the Holy Father’s intentions (see the opposite page of the bulletin), reception of Holy Communion, and the Sacrament of Penance (Confession). Holy Communion and Penance must be received within seven days. Please pray for all the faithful departed: our families, friends, former parishioners, and those who have nobody to pray for them. It is a work of mercy to pray for the dead. Our life is a preparation to meet the Lord, which comes at the moment of death. When St. Monica died, she reminded her son, St. Augustine, that our focus at every burial is not on the grief of separation, but on the hope of resurrection. As she so beautifully said: “Bury my body wherever you will, do not be concerned about that. One thing only I ask of you, that you remember me at the altar of the Lord.”

Psalm 130 (De profundis) Out of the depths I cry to you, O Lord;

Lord, hear my voice! O let your ears be attentive

to the sound of my pleadings. If you, O Lord, should mark iniquities,

Lord, who could stand? But with you is forgiveness, that you may be revered.

I long for you, O Lord, my soul longs for his word. My soul hopes in the Lord

more than watchmen for daybreak. More than watchmen for daybreak,

let Israel hope in the Lord. For with the Lord there is mercy, in him is plentiful redemption.

It is he who will redeem Israel from all its iniquities.

WORLD DAY FOR THE POOR

How can we fail to note that the Beatitudes with which Jesus began his preaching of the kingdom of God open with the words: “Blessed are you who are poor” (Luke 6:20)? The meaning of this paradoxical message is that the kingdom of God belongs to the poor because they are in a position to receive it. How many poor people do we encounter each day! It seems that this passage of time and the advances of civilization increase their numbers rather than diminishing them. Centuries go by and the Beatitude appears even more paradoxical: the poor are always poorer, and today they are poorer than ever. Yet Jesus who inaugurated his kingdom by placing the poor at the center, wanted to tell us precisely this: he inaugurated the kingdom, but he has entrusted to us, his disciples, the task of carrying it forward with responsibility for giving hope to the poor. Especially at times like our own, there is a need to revive hope and to restore confidence. This responsibility is not something that the Christian community may underestimate. The credibility of our proclamation and the witness of Christians depends on it. – Pope Francis

REFLECTION ON TODAY’S GOSPEL Today, the liturgy presents for our meditation the well-known Gospel episode of Jesus' meeting with Zacchaeus in the city of Jericho. Who was Zacchaeus? A rich man who was a “publican” by profession, that is, a tax collector for the Roman authorities, hence, viewed as a public sinner. Having heard that Jesus would be passing through Jericho, the man was consumed by a great desire to see him, and because he was small of stature, he climbed up into a tree. Jesus stopped exactly under that tree and addressed him by name: “Zacchaeus, make haste and come down; for I must stay at your house today” (Luke 19:5). What a message this simple sentence contains! “Zacchaeus”: Jesus called by name a man despised by all. “Today”: yes, this very moment was the moment of his salvation. “I must stay”: why “I must”? Because the Father, rich in mercy, wants Jesus "to seek and to save the lost" (Luke 19:10). The grace of that unexpected meeting was such that it completely changed Zacchaeus’ life: “Behold, Lord, the half of my goods I give to the poor; and if I have defrauded anyone of anything, I restore it fourfold” (Luke 19:8). Once again, the Gospel tells us that love, born in God's heart and working through man's heart, is the power that renews the world. – Benedict XVI

ORGANFEST AT ST. JOSEPH’S SEMINARY

Are you a fan of great organ music? Join us for a day dedicated to celebrating and enjoying the “king of instruments” – the pipe organ! You’ll hear from Jared Lamenzo, director of music at the Basilica of Old St. Patrick's Cathedral; enjoy breakout sessions with some of New York’s Catholic musicians; have the chance to participate in a roundtable discussion with representatives of three organ builders; and enjoy a concert on the Seminary’s 41-rank Casavant Frères pipe organ. Organfest takes place on Saturday, 23 November from 9:00 a.m.–3:00 p.m. at St. Joseph’s Seminary, Yonkers. Tickets can be purchased at nyliturgy.org/organfest.

NATIONAL VOCATION AWARENESS WEEK will be celebrated in our country this week, 3–9 November. Please ask Our Lord for more dedicated, holy priests, deacons and consecrated men and women. May they be inspired by Jesus Christ, supported by our faith community, and respond generously to God’s gift of a vocation. We also give thanks to God for the dedicated priests who serve this community of faith.

Next Sunday, 10 November, we will take up a second collection for the ARCHDIOCESE FOR THE MILITARY SERVICES. The AMS was established by Saint John Paul II in 1985 to provide the Catholic Church’s full range of pastoral ministries to those in the United States Armed Forces. While the salaries and retirement of military chaplains are paid for by the government, the AMS receives no funding from the military or the government in support of programs and services vital to the mission and ministry of its mission, including Vocations, Evangelization and Catechesis, Sacramental Records, Tribunal and Veterans Affairs. Unlike a conventional diocese, the AMS has no parishes or parish registries. The AMS has no weekly collections and relies solely on the generosity of private donations to support its aforementioned programs and services. Your support of the 2019 Triennial National Collection for the AMS will bring the Gospel, the sacraments and other forms of spiritual support to men and women who serve our Country and defend our freedoms, including parishioners and families from your own parish family.
