Prayer Knocks, Fasting Obtains, Mercy Receives

From a sermon by Saint Peter Chrysologus, bishop

There are three things, my brethren, which cause faith to stand firm, devotion remain constant, and virtue endure. They are prayer, fasting and mercy. Prayer knocks at the door, fasting obtains, mercy receives. Prayer, mercy and fasting: these three are one, and they give life to each other. Fasting is the soul of prayer, mercy is the lifeblood of fasting. Let no one try to separate them; they cannot be separated. If you have only one of them or not all togeth-er, you have nothing. So if you pray, fast; if you fast, show mercy; if you want your petition to be heard, hear the peti-tion of others. If you do not close your ear to others you open God’s ear to yourself. When you fast, see the fasting of others. If you want God to know that you are hungry, know that another is hungry. If you hope for mercy, show mercy. If you look for kind-ness, show kindness. If you want to receive , give. If you ask for yourself what you deny to others, your asking is a mockery. Let this be the pattern for all men when they practice mer-cy, show mercy to others in the same way, with the same generosity, with the same promptness, as you want oth-ers to show mercy to you. Therefore, let prayer, mercy and fasting be one single plea to God on our behalf, one speech in our defense, a threefold united prayer in our favor. Let us use fasting to make up for what we lost by despis-ing others. Let us offer our souls in sacrifice by means of fasting. There is nothing more pleasing that we can offer to God, as the psalmist said in prophecy: A sacrifice to God is a broken spirit; God does not despise a

bruised and humbled heart. Offer your soul to God, make Him an oblation of your fast-ing, so that your soul may be a pure offering, a holy sacri-fice, a living victim, remaining your own and at the same time made over to God. Whoever fails to give this to God will not be excused, for if you are to give Him yourself you are never without the means of giving. To make these acceptable, mercy must be added. Fasting bears no fruit unless it is watered by mercy. Fasting dries up when mercy dries up. Mercy is to fasting as rain is to the earth. However much you may cultivate your heart, clear the soil of your nature, root out vices, sow virtues, if you do not release the springs of mercy, your fasting will bear no fruit. When you fast, if your mercy is thin your harvest will be thin; when you fast, what you pour out in mercy overflows

Merciful Encounters: Meditations in Mercy

February 15, 16* and 17 7:00 pm

With Fr. Dan O’Connell from CatholicTV

Why do we need a Parish Mission at this time in our Church? In our busy lives its important to take time to reflect on who we are. During this Year of Mercy the Holy Father calls us to a greater appreciation of God’s presence in our lives and its call to action. We recall God’s goodness to us and those we love with gratitude. It is important that we gather as a community in prayer during these Lenten days.

What will happen during the three night mission? This mission will help us to focus on the Mercy of the fa-ther as seen in the figure of Jesus His Son and His invita-tion to share it with others. During each session the com-munity will come together to listen to the Word of God proclaimed and preached and spend some time in per-sonal prayer by way of Meditation on the 1st night, Offer-ing to the Needy on the 2nd night and Eucharist on the 3rd night. By reflecting on the experience of characters from the Gospel, this program will reveal the desire of Christ to generously offer mercy and strength to us, and to send us into the world as people of Reconciliation.

*On February 16th, the second Parish Mission evening, Fr. Dan O’Connell would like each person bring a non-perishable food item.

into your barn. Therefore, do not lose by saving, but gath-er in by scattering. Give to the poor, and you give to your-self. You will not be allowed to keep what you have re-fused to give to others.

My LIFT Experience By Hannah Wolfgang

Last November, we were all told the date and time of an event occurring in a nearby church in Dover-Sherborn, and it was heavily suggested we all attend. It was called LIFT, something I had never heard of. I’ll be honest, I did not want to go. I remember whining to my mother about why I had to go if no one else was going to go. She was disappointed, but finally stopped nagging me, until she realized we weren't having CCD that week, and figured that we should go to make up for it; I didn’t agree. But when the rainy night of the LIFT event came, I was in the front seat of my car, pulling into the parking lot of the Do-ver-Sherborn Church. We drove around at least six times to find a parking spot, it was so popular. I was surprised. However, when I walked in, I was even more surprised. What I had ex-pected to see was an almost empty Church, dimly lit with a person that was just going to talk the entire time and maybe sing a song or two. What I saw was a Church lit by neon-colored lights, tons of laughing, happy people, most under the age of 20. I found a seat and proceeded to be shocked by other things I saw. An entire band with every instrument imaginable, spotlights, and a big board that had pictures and the lyrics to the songs on it. Honest-ly , I was kind of uncomfortable. I had never seen a church like this, and kind of found it wrong. I was very tense throughout most of the beginning, I did not want to

be there anymore, I wanted to be home, sleeping. Then the band began to play. And when they played, I relaxed. The music was contemporary, and it was so beautiful that I couldn’t help but stop and listen. The lyrics were as beautiful as the music. The crowd loved it, and sang at the top of their lungs, clapping and cheering to every song. It was an amazing scene to see. I had never thought any young people were that interested in church and faith, and it made me feel good. There was also wom-an who spoke. She had found her faith connection through singing. What I had expected to be a boring talk for an hour was actually a talk filled with jokes, laughter, stories and pictures. I actually paid attention (which I’m not very good at). As soon as I got home I looked up every song I could re-member and listened to them until I had to go to bed. I enjoyed myself so much, that I went again to the special Advent LIFT at the Cathedral in Boston, and I plan on go-ing to the special Lent LIFT in a couple of months. I still listen to all of the songs when I am studying, trying to fall asleep, or just wanting to relax. LIFT stayed with me even after I left. I learned so much there. I learned a lot about how people find faith in their lives, as well as how many people my age are actually involved in an event like LIFT. But the thing I took away from the LIFT experience that I most value is that you need to open your mind and heart and let faith in, and that you can’t be worried about what others think. You just have to be yourself and worship the way that suits you best, whether that is silent prayer or belting out songs of praise at the top of your lungs. LIFT was the best church event I have ever been to, and I wish other people my age would get to experience it as well to see how it could affect their lives.
