Summer Sounds: A delightful evening of music at our parish

This week, on Thursday August 9th at 7:30 pm, members of our music ministry, along with singers from Saint Leo’s in Lincroft, Saint Catharine’s in Holmdel, The Trenton Diocesan Festival Choir and others, will be presenting a concert of sacred and secular works. We will also be joined by a professional string orchestra, who will play some instrumental works as well.

One of my goals as the Coordinator of Worship and Music is to foster the health of both of these aspects of church life for the benefit of our parishioners and guests. On the music side of things, this concert is one step. Future ideas include smaller recitals, comprised of either solo or chamber groups, concerts such as the one being presented this week, and larger concerts with a full professional orchestra and large choir.

This week’s concert is free to attend, although a donation is appreciated. All proceeds will be used to off-set the cost of the concert and to fund future musical endeavors at our parish. The concert will run less than one hour, and promises to be quite the entertaining evening. I hope to see many of you there, and I thank you for your support of the musical life of our parish family.

Quo vadis…

Dear Parishioners: Today the Universal Church celebrates the Eighteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time. What we need before receiving Eucharist is a personal relationship with Jesus. There is a curious paradox here: on the one hand, we need to feast on Jesus who is the Bread of Life in order to strengthen our belief, our relationship with him. On the other hand, we must have a relationship with Jesus (belief) in order for Eucharist to nourish us. Belief and bread from heaven come together in Jesus, who gives himself to us. If Jesus is the bread from heaven given for us and we are the body of Christ, then we must conclude that we ourselves are to be bread from heaven that fosters eternal life for others. As God has “set his seal” on Jesus, so through baptism and confirmation has God “set his seal” on us. Jesus gives himself as bread from heaven; we give ourselves to others as bread from heaven when we confirm our belief by means of the everyday actions we do. Treating another as the body of Christ is believing. Taking time to be in touch with our spiritual needs is believing. Reaching out in compassion to others is believing. Self-giving is believing. It is hard to believe that the month of August is upon us. The Summer is nearly half complete. There has been a lot of coming and going within our community. Parishioners and staff are taking time for some holiday, rest and re-creation. This is good. A time to re-connect with family and friends is good too. Don’t forget to make it a priority to participate in the Sunday Mass wherever you find yourself. The Lord awaits us especially on Sunday. Make the celebration of the Eucharist a deliberate part of your summertime away. The weekend of 18/19 August we will welcome a visiting missionary as part of our parish participation in the Society for the

Propagation of the Faith Mission Cooperative Program. This is one of the great aspects of our Roman Catholic Church…our responsibility to assist those who bring the message of the Gospel to all corners of the earth. We are all so blessed. Part of stewardship is sharing our blessings. Come with an open mind and heart so that our parish might continue to support the poor and needy. Next weekend, we will welcome those families who have pre-registered their children for the August Summer Intensive Religious Education session. There are more than 100 children pre-registered for this session this year. The July session was a positive experience for the participants, their parents, the catechists and all involved. It is my hope that the August session will once again be a positive experience. Next week the Church celebrates the Solemnity of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, a Holy Day of Obligation. This is the patronal observance of our Diocese of Trenton and our Diocesan Cathedral. Let us pray that Mary, Mother of the Church will continue to intercede for us. This year we will again welcome our Summer Intensive participants to the 9 am Mass for Solemnity of the Assumption. Progress continues to be made with our Super 50/50 Raffle. All (100%) of the net proceeds will be used to pay back some of our bills from 2013 and forward. Tickets may be purchased at the parish office during work hours and online anywhere there is an internet connection. Pass the word to former parishioners and friends who might like to take a chance. Many thanks for your participation in support of our parish as we continue to reduce our past liabilities. Have a great week. Let us remember one another in prayer. Happy Sunday. Peace. Father Jeff

Infertility—Understanding your options Despite medical advances across the board, infertility is an increasing struggle that more and more couples face. As the desire to conceive and bear a child grows stronger, many couples are swept up along a pathway of medical testing and treatments that become very questionable and problematic from the standpoint of our Catholic morality, and from basic secular understanding of natural law. Also, these treatments often have negative impact on the woman’s health, the couple’s relationship, and the household finances. If you are seeking guidance about infertility treatments, please remember that our Catholic Faith teaches that any treatment which replaces the marital act itself (such as, but not limited to artificial insemination or in-vitro fertilization) is against the very essence of the unitive meaning of the marriage and is morally damaging to all parties involved.

Treatments that seek to properly diagnose and correct underlying problems or assist fertility, without replacing the marital act are encouraged by the Church to help couples achieve conception. Please contact the National Gianna Center for Women’s Health and Fertility, New Brunswick and Manhattan, at (732) 565-5490 to speak with doctors and medical professionals who specialize in very effective, cutting edge treatments for infertility that also uphold the dignity of Marriage. This information is supported by the St. Denis Elizabeth Ministry, Rachel Hendricks, Director 732-223-1658.
