The Baptism of the Lord January 11–12, 2020
A Note from Our Pastor,
Today with the Feast of the Baptism of the Lord Jesus we come to the end of this year’s Christmas Season. I am extremely grateful to all those who contributed in so many ways to
make our Masses this Christmas Season so beautiful and inspiring. In particular, I want to thank the members of our Art and Environment Team who decorated the Church, Chapel, and Parish Center so beautifully, as well as to thank the many parishioners who helped make much of this possi-ble by your donations to our Flower Fund in memory or in honor of loved ones. I am also very grateful to Mrs. Julie Fay and the instrumentalists, cantors, soloists, and the mem-bers of our several choirs for enhancing our prayer and our participation in the Christmas mysteries by the beautiful music they all provided throughout this Christmas Season. I am very appreciative as well of the competence and gener-osity of our collectors, altar servers, lectors, and extraordi-nary ministers of Holy Communion throughout these sacred days. Kudos also to the greeters at our Christmas Masses and to the members of the School and Faith Formation Classes who served at our 9am Family Masses during the Advent and Christmas Seasons. Although we didn’t have as many participants in the Christmas Pageant this year as in the past, Lily Curley and Julianne Sheehan did a marvelous job directing our young thespians this year! You’ll notice a picture of our Pageant actors and actresses below. Finally, I am very grateful to my brother priests, Deacon Dan, our Pastoral Associate Lisa Gulino, all our parish staff, and our hometown seminarian David Campo for all they contribut-ed to make Christmas Season at St. Agatha’s such a beauti-ful, uplifting, and prayerful experience for us all.
As we celebrate Christ’s Baptism this weekend, at the 9am Sunday Mass families who had a child baptized this past year will be present and recognized, and each child will receive a Miraculous Medal that will be blessed at that Mass. Right after the Mass Kathy Pritchard and several oth-ers will provide a very pleasant social down in the Gather-ing Space.
This Monday the 13th there will be another session of Pizza and Prayer in the Gathering Space for all High School teens.
On Saturday we begin our annual week of prayer for unity among all Christians. May the Lord Jesus who prayed that His followers should be one, guide us all in recognizing the gift of Christian faith and baptism that all Christians share, in our efforts to bring the principles of Christ’s Gospel to bear in our society, and in our quest to form bridges rather than construct barriers among our various Christian communities.
Beginning a week from Tuesday (January 21) at 9:45am Lisa Gulino is hosting a study and discussion of Matthew Kelly’s book Rediscovering the Saints which was distribut-ed here at the Christmas Masses. Please see below in this bulletin for further details.
To conclude, Fr, Jay and I traveled to Athens, Georgia on New Year’s Eve to concelebrate the Nuptial Mass of our Youth Minister Helen Bornhorst and her husband Jonathan Waring at the Catholic Chapel in the Catholic Center at the University of Georgia, of which they both are alums. Mr. and Mrs. Waring are on their honeymoon in Costa Rica and will be back with us at St. Agatha’s very soon. See the pic-ture below, taken right after their Nuptial Mass.
Have a blessed week! Fr. Palardy
Thank you to all of the talented children who participated in the Christmas Pageant on Christmas Eve. Also thank you to Lily Curley and Julianne Sheehan for organizing and directing the nativity presentation.
THEME: We must do what God wants, even when we don’t understand it fully.
What one word or thought in this reading really strikes you? What image from this reading lingers for you now in your memory?
Gospel : Matthew 3:13-17
Jesus came from Galilee to John at the Jordan to be baptized by him. John tried to prevent him, saying, “I need to be baptized by you, and yet you are coming to me?” Jesus said to him in reply, “Allow it now, for thus it is fitting for us to fulfill all righteousness.” Then he allowed him. After Jesus was baptized, he came up from the water and behold, the heavens were opened for him, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and coming upon him. And a voice came from the heavens, saying, “This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased.”
Pastoral Planning
January 12 ~ The Baptism of the Lord This feast of the Baptism of the Lord presents us with the opportunity reflect on the importance of our own baptism. It is the sacrament we receive only once but the graces of the sacrament continue to unfold throughout our lives. Spend some time in prayer with the reading from Isaiah in today’s Mass. As you read the passage, hear God speaking these words directly to you. Draw on the grace of your baptism to make these words live in your heart.
With a tremendous surge during the Christmas Season we did it—we surpassed our budgeted goal for the Grand An-nual! Over the last 10 days of 2019, 32 households re-sponded with donations that brought the total to $183,059, which is $13,059 more than our target for the year! This is fantastic fiscal news and is a testament to the commitment of the parish community to fund our many programs, min-istries as well as our facilities. Many thanks to everyone who supported this appeal.
Because of early publication date, the Offertory Collection for the weekend of December 28-29 is being published below along with the total for this past weekend. The last 6 weeks have seen us make steady progress on the Weekly Offertory, as we have slightly surpassed or barely missed out weekly target. Your support is very much appreciated. The Christmas Collection for the Clergy Fund total was also not available in time for last week’s Bulletin. The total for the collection—which goes entirely to support the health and retirement needs of our priests—was $28,577. Thank you for your generosity and your support through-out the year.

Please Help Kendall You may have heard or seen on the news the tragic story of the car accident on Dec. 29 in Pembroke that took the life of a 13 year old girl and critically injured another 13 year old girl. The girl in critical condi-tion is the daughter of Gary Zemotel, our sales representative from T&K Asphalt, the company that maintains our parking lots. Kendall remains in ICU and your prayers for her recovery and for her father, mother and three siblings would be very much appreciated. In addition, a Go-FundMe page has been set up by friends of the family. The page is titled “Please Help Kendall” and you can donate using the following link. https://www.gofundme.com/f/x34e6-please-help?utm_source=customer&utm_medium=copy_link-tip&utm_campaign=p_cp+share-sheet. The Sacred Pause Lisa M. Gulino—Pastoral Associate
I wish you and your loved ones a happy and blessed New Year—2020! When we think of “2020” we think of perfect vision—clear sightedness—the ability to see straight —an unobstructed vision. It is tradition for a New Year to star t with a Proclamation of Gratitude and a Resolution.
Proclamation of Gratitude: We are grateful for you—parents and grandparents—the Church cannot continue her mission without you. “The Church’s ability to introduce the world to its Savior depends on parents who, strong in their own faith, tell their children who Jesus is and show them how to live a life of grace and love.” (Cardinal Francis George)
Let 2020 be a year of spiritual clear sightedness and unobstructed vision. Might we resolve to sharpen our vision to see how the Catholic Faith impacts our journey of life? What obstructs our vision in seeing the gift that the Church is to our lives? To have sharp vision often entails taking a “second look.” You are invited to join members of our Pastoral Staff, Parish and Finance Councils, and School community for a workshop, Disciples in Mission, from 9:00 AM until 4:00 PM on Saturday, February 1st at Holy Family Parish in Duxbury, MA. There is no cost to you. In this new year of “2020 vision” let us focus on learning about the life-giving mission of our Church. Do we see new possibilities for spiritual renewal? Please speak to one of the priests or Lisa Gulino, Pastoral Associate to sign up or arrange carpooling.
God is madly in love with you! (St. Theresa of Avila) Together let’s perfect our vision and discover the glory of our Catholic Faith. View life through the lens of faith!
