The Parish of St Alban the Martyr, South Norwood

Patronal Mass

Saint Alban the Martyr

At the beginning of Mass we gather by the font, ready to make our devotions

at the Shrine of St Alban.

Before the Shrine of Saint Alban the celebrant says:

I am called Alban and I worship and adore the true and living

God who created all things

Among the roses of the Martyrs brightly shines

Saint Alban

Let us pray.

O God, who adorned this nation with the crown of Saint Alban, our

first martyr: in your mercy grant that we may follow his example of

faithfulness to death, and receive with him the crown of everlasting

life, through Christ our Lord. Amen

Flowers are left at the Shrine, then messages from our bishops and friends of

St Alban’s.

THE GATHERING

ye patriarchs and prophets blest,

all saints triumphant, raise the song: Chorus

The Collect O God, by whose grace Saint Alban gave himself up for his friend

and received the martyr’s crown as the first in this land to shed his

blood for Christ; grant, we pray, that following his example and

supported by his prayers we may worship you, the living God, and

give true witness to Christ our Lord.

Who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit,

one God, for ever and ever.

Amen.

THE LITURGY OF THE WORD

First Reading

A reading from the book of Deuteronomy

Moses said to the people: ‘You are a people consecrated to the Lord

your God; it is you that the Lord our God has chosen to be his very

own people out of all the peoples on the earth.

‘If the Lord set his heart on you and chose you, it was not because

you outnumbered other peoples: you were the least of all peoples. It

was for love of you and to keep the oath he swore to your fathers

that the Lord brought you out with his mighty hand and redeemed

you from the house of slavery, from the power of Pharaoh king of

Egypt. Know then that the Lord your God is God indeed, the faithful

God who is true to his covenant and his graciousness for a thousand

generations towards those who love him and keep his

commandments, but who punishes in their own persons those that

hate him. He is not slow to destroy the man who hates him; he

makes him work out his punishment in person. You are therefore to

keep and observe the commandments and statutes and ordinances

that I lay down for you today.’

The Word of the Lord

Thanks be to God

Second Reading

A reading from the 1st letter of Saint John

My dear people, let us love one another

since love comes from God

and everyone who loves is begotten by God and knows God.

Anyone who fails to love can never have known God,

because God is love.

God’s love for us was revealed

when God sent into the world his only Son

so that we could have life through him;

this is the love I mean:

not our love for God,

but God’s love for us when he sent his Son

to be the sacrifice that takes our sins away.

My dear people, since God has loved us so much,

we too should love one another.

No one has ever seen God;

but as long as we love one another

God will live in us

and his love will be complete in us.

We can know that we are living in him

and he is living in us

because he lets us share his Spirit.

We ourselves saw and we testify

that the Father sent his Son

as saviour of the world.

If anyone acknowledges that Jesus is the Son of God,

God lives in him, and he in God.

We ourselves have known and put our faith in

God’s love towards ourselves.

God is love and anyone who lives in love lives in God,

and God lives in him.

The Word of the Lord

Thanks be to God

Gospel Acclamation Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia!

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit;

the God who is, who was, and who is to come.

Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia!

The Holy Gospel Matthew 6:7-15

The Lord be with you.

And with your spirit.

Hear the holy Gospel according to Matthew.

Glory to you, O Lord.

Jesus said to his disciples: ‘In your prayers do not babble as the pagans

do, for they think that by using many words they will make

themselves heard. Do not be like them; your Father knows what you

need before you ask him. So you should pray like this:

‘Our Father in heaven,

may your name be held holy,

your kingdom come,

your will be done,

on earth as in heaven.

Give us today our daily bread.

And forgive us our debts, as we have forgiven those who are in debt

to us.

And do not put us to the test,

but save us from the evil one.

‘Yes, if you forgive others their failings, your heavenly Father will

forgive you yours; but if you do not forgive others, your Father will

not forgive your failings either.’

The Gospel of the Lord

Praise to you Lord Jesus Christ.

Sermon- Fr Mark Gilbert, Vicar of St Mary’s Petworth

he Nicene Creed

I believe in one God, the Father almighty,

maker of heaven and earth, of all things visible and invisible.

I believe in one Lord Jesus Christ, the Only Begotten Son of God,

born of the Father before all ages. God from God, Light from

Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made,

consubstantial with the Father; through him all things were

made. For us men and for our salvation he came down from

heaven,

(all bow) and by the Holy Spirit was incarnate of the Virgin Mary,

and became man.

For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate, he suffered

death and was buried, and rose again on the third day

in accordance with the Scriptures. He ascended into heaven

and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again

in glory to judge the living and the dead and his kingdom will

have no end.

I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who

proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and

the Son is adored and glorified, who has spoken through the

prophets. I believe in one, holy, catholic and apostolic Church.

I confess one Baptism for the forgiveness of sins and I look

forward to the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to

come. Amen.

Prayers of the People

As we ask for the prayers of St Alban, we pray for the strength to

follow Jesus. Let us pray-

Jesus said: ‘Whoever wishes to be great among you must be your

servant.’

We pray for your holy church, for our bishops, archdeacons,

priests and people. May we grow in holiness and love.

Lord in your mercy.

Hear our prayer.

Jesus said: ‘Unless you change

and become humble like little children,

you can never enter the kingdom of heaven.’

We pray for all those affected by the coronavirus. For our families

and school, for our doctors and nurses, and for all who care for

us.

Lord in your mercy.

Hear our prayer.

Jesus said: ‘Be merciful as your Father is merciful;

love your enemies and do good to them.’

We pray for the world and all nations, and for all who live in this

country. We pray for an end to racism and compassion for all

people.

Lord in your mercy.

Hear our prayer.

Jesus said: ‘Love one another, as I love you;

there is no greater love than this,

to lay down your life for your friends.’

We pray for all who are sick or suffering, in this parish and those

known only to us. Bless them and keep them safe.

Lord in your mercy.

Hear our prayer.

Jesus said: ‘Go to people everywhere

and make them my disciples,

and I will be with you always, to the end of time.’

We pray for all who have died. For our friends and relatives and

for all who have died suddenly from the virus.

Lord in your mercy.

Hear our prayer.

And now we ask for the prayers of Mary the Mother of God as we

say…

Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee; Blessed art thou

among women and blessed is the fruit of they womb, Jesus.

Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners, now and at the

hour of our death.

Holy Father answer these prayers according to your will through

Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

THE LITURGY OF THE SACRAMENT

Offertory Hymn

Pray, my brothers and sisters,

that my sacrifice and yours may be acceptable to God,

the almighty Father.

May the Lord accept the sacrifice at your hands,

for the praise and glory of his name,

for our good, and the good of all his holy Church.

Prayer over the Offerings At the end of the prayer we all say….Amen.

Eucharistic prayer The Lord be with you

And with your spirit

Lift up your hearts

We lift them up to the Lord

Let us give thanks to the Lord our God

It is right and just

The Celebrant continues with the PREFACE, at the end of which we sing:

Holy, Holy, Holy Lord God of hosts.

Heaven and earth are full of your glory.

Hosanna in the highest.

Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.

Hosanna in the highest.

The Celebrant continues the Eucharistic Prayer. First he invokes the Holy

Spirit to sanctify the offerings of bread and wine, a bell is rung, and then

he recalls the Lord’s actions the night before he died.

He then sings.

The mystery of faith

We proclaim your Death, O Lord,

and profess your Resurrection

until you come again.

The Celebrant continues the Eucharistic Prayer. He then sings.

Through him, and with him, and in him,

O God, almighty Father,

in the unity of the Holy Spirit,

all honour and glory is yours,

for ever and ever. Amen.

All stand as the Celebrant introduces the Lord’s Prayer.

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name; thy

kingdom come; thy will be done; on earth as it is in heaven.

Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as

we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into

temptation; but deliver us from evil.

Deliver us, Lord, we pray, from every evil, graciously grant peace

in our days, that, by the help of your mercy, we may be always free

from sin and safe from all distress, as we await the blessed hope

and the coming of our Saviour, Jesus Christ.

For the kingdom, the power and the glory are yours

now and for ever.

Lord Jesus Christ, who said to your Apostles: Peace I leave you, my

peace I give you, look not on our sins, but on the faith of your

Church, and graciously grant her peace and unity in accordance

with your will. Who lives and reigns for ever and ever. Amen

The peace of the Lord be with you always. And with your spirit.

Let us offer each other the sign of peace.

We sing

Lamb of God, you take away the sins of the world:

have mercy on us.

Lamb of God, you take away the sins of the world:

have mercy on us.

Lamb of God, you take away the sins of the world:

grant us peace.

Giving of Communion The Celebrant shows the consecrated Host to the people saying,

Behold the Lamb of God.

Behold him who takes away the sins of the world.

Blessed are those who are called to the supper of the Lamb.

Lord, I am not worthy that you should enter under my roof,

but only say the word and my soul shall be healed.

When the celebrant receives the Body and Bloody of Christ he then says the

communion antiphon.

Prayer of Spiritual Communion

My Jesus, I believe that You are present in the Most Holy

Sacrament. I love You above all things, and I desire to receive You

into my soul. Since I cannot at this moment receive You

sacramentally, come at least spiritually into my heart. I embrace

You as if You were already there and unite myself wholly to You.

Never permit me to be separated from You. Amen

Communion Hymn

1 O Bread of Heaven, beneath this veil

Thou dost my very God conceal:

My Jesus, dearest treasure, hail!

I love Thee and, adoring, kneel;

Each loving soul by Thee is fed

With Thine own Self in form of Bread.

2 O food of life, Thou Who dost give

The pledge of immortality;

I live, no 'tis not I that live;

God gives me life, God lives in me:

He feeds my soul, He guides my ways,

And every grief with joy repays.

3 O Bond of love that dost unite

The servant to his living Lord;

Could I dare live and not requite

Such love - then death were meet reward:

I cannot live unless to prove

Some love for such unmeasured love.

4 Beloved Lord, in Heav’n above

There, Jesus, Thou awaitest me,

To gaze on Thee with endless love;

Yes, thus I hope, thus shall it be:

For how can He deny me Heav’n,

Who here on earth Himself hath giv’n?

Prayer after Communion May the sacred mysteries of which we have partaken, O Lord, we

pray, give us that determination which made your blessed Martyr

Alban faithful in your service and victorious in suffering.

Through Christ our Lord. Amen.

THE BLESSING AND DISMISSAL

The Lord be with you.

And with your spirit.

May almighty God bless you,

+the Father, and the Son, and the Holy Spirit.

Amen.

Go in the peace of Christ.

Thanks be to God.

THE ANGELUS, is sung

The angel of the Lord brought tidings to Mary

and she conceived by the Holy Spirit.

Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee.

Blessed art thou among women

and blessed is the fruit of thy womb Jesus.

Holy Mary, Mother of God,

pray for us sinners, now,

and at the hour of our death. Amen.

Behold, the handmaid of the Lord.

Be it unto me according to thy word.

Hail Mary, full of grace...

And the Word was made flesh.

And dwelt among us.

Hail Mary, full of grace...

Pray for us, O Holy Mother of God.

That we may be made worthy

of the promises of Christ.

Pour forth, we beseech thee O Lord,

thy grace into our hearts

that we, having known the incarnation of thy Son,

Jesus Christ, by the message of an angel;

may by his cross and passion

be brought to the glory of his resurrection.

Through the same Christ our Lord.

Amen.
