WHATEVER YOU DID FOR ONE OF THESE . . .”
Almsgiving (or any form of charity) is one of the tradi-tional foundations of the Lenten season. But whether we happen to be in the midst of Lent, or moving through any other time of the year, our steady willingness to lift up the struggling in our community is always appreciat-ed. The needs of those who come to our Parish Outreach are just as real in July as it they are in November or March, but somehow during the summer we have a ten-dency to forget. Let’s continue to make frequent use of the poor boxes by the doors, and stock the Food Pantry shelves by leaving non-perishable items in the wooden chests at the rear of the church. The day to day difficul-ties of our own sisters and brothers never go away. Thank you so much!
THE QUESTION BOX
Just for fun—and some ongoing education—here’s a ques-tion on our Catholic spirituality and tradition. Enjoy! Q: As time goes by, we see more families choosing to cremate the remains of a loved one who has died. Without question, cremation is permitted by the Church, though it is still considered preferable that the body be buried, or interred in a mausoleum, etc. If cremation does take place, how are the cremains (“ashes”) to be disposed of? (a) They should be sprinkled on the ground, or over the water. (b) They should be kept in a place of honor in the home. (c) They should be divided among select loved ones of the deceased. (d) They should be buried in a cemetery, or interred in a columbarium (a niche designed to accommodate the urn). A: You may recall that cremation was long prohibited by the Church—thought to be a less dignified way of treating the body of a person who had died. It was also seen as being at odds with the Gospel narrative of Jesusʹ own death, after which his body was not burned, but buried in a tomb. Today, the Church allows much greater latitude to a family in choosing to cremate the remains of a loved one. Liturgical documents were changed years ago to allow for cremation, and prayers have been composed that make specific reference to a bodyʹs having been cremated. But the Church continues to have a strong preference for the burial of any baptized Catholic, or the inter-ment of his or her body in a crypt or mausoleum. Cremation is not viewed as an equally favorable op-tion when compared to the practice of burial. Whatʹs more, the Church is very specific about the final dispo-sition of cremains, that is, what is understood to be appropriate, and what is not. Cremated remains are always to be buried in a cemetery, or interred in a spe-cial niche (called a columbarium) designed for that pur-pose. The ʺashesʺ are not to be scattered over the ground or the water; they are not to be kept by the family in the home; nor are they to be distributed among the deceasedʹs loved ones. The answer is (d).

OUR PARISH MISSION STATEMENT The parish of St. Lawrence the Martyr is a family of believers, rooted in the Roman Catholic faith, and striving to live the Gospel of Jesus Christ in both word and action.
As disciples of the risen Lord, and stewards of his extraordi-nary gifts, we seek to grow strong in faith, hope, and love. With the parish as our spiritual home, we commit ourselves to prayer, to teaching the faith, and to serving the needs of the poor.
Nourished by the Word of God and the Church’s sacraments, we cherish our rich Catholic heritage as we strive to build a welcoming faith community and proclaim Christ to the world. We look to our patron, St. Lawrence, who challenges us to see in one another—and in all God’s children—the “treasure of the Church.”
Sacrament of Reconciliation (Confession)
Confessions are available in the Bethany Center from 1:00 to 2:00 PM. on Saturdays. Please enter the doors on the side facing Dollar Tree.
