Hello Everyone.
How wonderful it was to see so many of you on the playing field on Gala Day. The fancy dress procession brought back memories of former carnival days. Well done to the organisers. Everyone seemed to be enjoying the different entertainment on the field. The climbing wall, crazy carts and bouncy castle looked busy and the “Arrowbarrows” were very entertaining. It was a shame the weather closed in midway through the afternoon.
The new play park was also officially opened on Gala Day. This proved a big hit with the youngsters. We had young children staying with us the following weekend and they thoroughly en-joyed playing on the equipment. They thought our village chil-dren were extremely lucky to have such a “cool” park.
I am receiving more “free ads” every month. I may have to take some of the older ones out to make space. If you find your advert has disappeared and you would like it replaced, please let me know.
Enjoy the rest of the summer.

From Cllr Steph McWilliam – August 2013
There is little to report this month. Although there is work going on in the back-
ground, there are fewer meetings, with people being on holiday or having family
and friends visiting. However, it is all discussion at this stage rather than any deci-
sions being made.
Neighbourhood Development Plans are still being considered by parish councils
and communities. The dilemma is that they are time consuming, expensive and
quite complicated but they are the best chance of local people having some say
over housing, business premises, renewable energy projects and other develop-
ments in their area. If you hear of anything going on locally, do please get in-
volved.
I’m sure in a couple of month’s time I will have difficulty keeping these reports
from Cornwall Council down to a reasonable length but, for now, there is little
else to say.
In the meantime, what a wonderful gala we enjoyed this year. The opening of the
new Sunflower Park, the restoration of the procession and the ‘Arrow Barrows’
were enjoyed by all, whilst the climbing wall proved a great hit with our younger
or more adventurous parishioners. The tried and tested favourites, such as the
stalls, fancy dress and beautiful baby competition, plus the Tavistock Twirlers,
Crazy Karts and ‘It’s a Knockout’ were as popular as ever and I can’t remember
seeing so many people coming together to have fun for many years. It was also
great to see people who grew up here coming back for the event. Congratulations
to Ruth and all concerned. I am very proud to live in such a vibrant community.
I do hope you enjoy the summer and make the most of living in such a beautiful
part of the world.
Thank you.
Road Naming

gestions for a road name for the new site in Fore Street, Pensilva.

with any suggestions.
Thank you.

The Latest From Your Parish Councillor - Martin Corney
Well I did enjoy Pensilva Gala Day, I saw the young and adventurous resolutely
facing the challenge of Pam's Climbing Wall, I manned the Pensilva Wildlife
Group stand briefly, and had difficulty holding my camera steady, I was laughing
so much at the Arrow Barrows. The light summer mist then drove us indoors,
where I helped Steph and Ruth draw raffle tickets. Some of those prizes were still
in the office, waiting to be claimed, last time I looked. Anyway, a really great day
was had by all. So many thanks to all those who organised it so brilliantly, espe-
cially Ruth. After the fun, now back to the serious stuff.
For my own personal use, I've created a few interconnected blogs on Blogspot, so
that you can send me comments. Most search engines will find them if you enter
"martin corney blog st ive", and I promise to publish all polite comments. This is a
chance for you to tell me what you think. Blogs so far cover; my Parish Pump
contributions, internet for the parish, the parish Neighbourhood Development
Plan, and my Green thoughts.
The Parish Council have asked me to lead a steering group looking at how we can
best use the internet for the benefit of the community. I've created a Facebook
Page "St Ive Parish Council" which non Facebook users can view at
www.facebook.com/stiveparishcouncil. We will keep this page updated with par-
ish news items such as road closures, and parish council meeting agendas and
minutes. Facebook users can "Like" the page and automatically receive these news
items in their news feed. The Facebook news feed is a bit like creating your own
personal newspaper with articles from just the sources you are interested in. I
think this has real potential.
In order to keep improving how we use the internet my next project will be sorting
out the parish web sites. I'd like to get a group of us involved. If enough people are
interested in volunteering for work experience, I'd really like to form a Communi-
ty Interest Company based around internet services. I think there are lots of local
groups and businesses that would like a web site. Please check out my blog for
more details.
Finally the Parish Council have asked me to lead a working group for creating a
Neighbourhood Development Plan. (If you want something done fast, give the job
to someone who's busy.) A Neighbourhood Development Plan is our chance to de-
cide how new building projects and other developments happen in the future. The
whole community can be involved in this. There will be a need to gather your
views, and at the end we all get to vote in a referendum, which gives the Neigh-
bourhood Development Plan legal weight. My blog has links to more information
I've found on the internet, but remember that it's not the official way to feed back
opinion to the Parish Council. We are still working on that.

MEMORY CAFÉ
The Pensilva Memory Café has now been running at St. John’s Church since April
this year. The Memory cafe is a meeting place which offers, in an informal set-
ting, help and support to people affected by memory problems. The invitation ex-
tends to carers, family and friends, as everyone is ‘affected’.
Operating on a ‘drop-in’ basis, it gives participants the chance to exchange experi-
ences and information, receive practical information and emotional support. One
of our aims is to help participants put together a ‘Memory Book’ to help to stir up
past and present memories, with photographs, articles and letters that help tell that
persons’ life story.
We hope to invite people to come and talk about different aspects of living with
memory problems and we will be asking participants to give us some ideas of
how they would like to see the Memory Café develop. We hope that this informal
setting provides emotional support and reduces the isolation often felt by people
with dementia, their carers and families.
Please do come along, and bring those you care for. Carers will all be very wel-
come, as well as those of us who need prompting to remember what day it is! See
you on the fourth Thursday of each month at 2pm in St. John’s Church, Pensilva.
We would still welcome more volunteers to help in the Café.
If you are interested and would like to volunteer please come along to the Café or
ring Carolyn on 362698.

PENSILVA HISTORY GROUP
CONDUCTED WALK TO SOUTH CARADON AND GONAMENA MINES
WEDNESDAY 24TH JULY 2013
REPORT FOR CHAHP
The History Group organised a conducted walk which was open to all comers on the evening
of 24th July 2013.
The Group were fortunate to have been able to engage the services of Mr John Manley of the
Trevithick Society and Caradon Mine Exploration Group to accompany the walk and give us
the benefit of his vast knowledge an experience of the mines of the Caradon Hill Area. Also
accompanying the group was Miss Lucy Nutt from St Cleer village. Lucy is a second year
Oxford University student and had requested Pensilva History Group organise this walk and
that she come along and interview the walkers. She is currently doing a study into how peo-
ple react to and interact with their environment.
We numbered twelve people in the group and set off from Tokenbury Corner at 6.30pm in a
gathering moorland mist which added atmosphere to the walk as it swirled around the chim-
neys and remains of the engine houses. We stopped and viewed Holmans Shaft engine house
which was built in 1875 to hold a 70 inch beam engine. The remains of the building have re-
cently been worked on with the help of the Caradon Hill Area Heritage Project and Cornwall
Council to keep the remains of the building stable and prevent any further deterioration in the
future. The walk continued westwards and after a short deviation from the main track ar-
rivedt the ivy clad Jopes Shaft engine house. This is a very impressive building which
housed a 42 inch Sims compound engine which was replaced by a 60 inch in 1862. The en-
gine house is in good condition with the cylinder bedstone still in place. The renowned engi-
neer William West installed a man engine at this mine near Jopes Shaft in 1872, the last one
to be installed in Cornwall.
We continued down the track and into the deep and impressive Gonamena valley. The Vic-
torian author Wilkie Collins visited this site in 1850 when it was a fully working mine and in
his book 'Rambles Beyond Railways' describes the sights and sounds that he and his compan-
ion experienced when coming upon this valley. John explained how the tin and copper lodes
in Cornwall were formed and how they run from east to west. He also told the group about
the lucky accident that resulted in Captain James Clymo discovering the piece of copper ore
that led to the formation of South Caradon Mine, one of the richest in Cornwall. John also
pointed out traces of ancient tin streaming at the head of the Gonamena valley which is where
the walk ended.
The group returned to Tokenbury Corner at 9.30pm.

PENSILVA WILDLIFE GROUP TRIP TO THE OTTER SANCTUARY
The wet start did not dampen the spirits of the group of 19 wildlife and otter spotters that gathered
at the Tamar Otter and Wildlife centre.
The day started with a Bird of Prey talk given by Emma, a young lady with a huge knowledge and
understanding of her subject. Emma told us that an Owls’ eye colour can give an indication as to
its activity time. An owl with very dark eyes is normally active at night (nocturnal), an owl with
yellow eyes is active during the day (diurnal), and an owl with orange eyes is active at dawn and
dusk (crepuscular). The Snowy Owl was a real eye catcher, but for me being able to get up close
and personal with our native Kestrel was a real highlight .There was an opportunity for everyone
to hold several of the birds on the glove. Which many of the younger ones in the group, and a few
of the mature ones too, thoroughly enjoyed. The weather then started to improve and we were in
sunshine for the rest of the day.
My family group then moved on to wander around the rest of the centre looking at the otters,
chipmunks, wallabies, and deer .We loved being able to feed the deer, they took the food very
gently from our hands. We kept a look out for Dasher the 3 legged Muntjac, but sadly he did not
make an appearance. The wallabies were very popular with their joeys just visible from the
pouch. The rarest British mammal was rather shy when we peered into its enclosure but other
wildlife enthusiasts assured us that the Scottish wild cat was definately in there. As with all wild-
life watching, patience is the name of the game!
The centre use their natural resources to good effect leaving plenty of log piles around for bugs
and other wildlife to use for food and shelter. There is a programme of coppicing and bird, bat and
dormice nesting sites. Ducks, geese and peacocks were in abundance .The children loved picking
up the wide array of feathers found around the centre.
The final treat were the obvious stars of the centre .Once again, whilst feeding the otters, Emma
gave us an interesting talk on all aspects of the otters .Otters have to eat twenty per cent of their
body weight every day to survive .So they are fed four times a day with a diet of cod and macke-
rel. After their decline between the fifties and seventies a programme of reintroduction started and
today it is thought that otters can be found in all counties of Britain . The centre has a large colony
of Asian short clawed otters and several smaller family groups of British otters. Otters have an in-
teresting ‘musk’ that permeates the whole otter area, the youngsters in our group thought it smelt
like tuna. The otters gave us a very dextrous demonstration of swimming and diving for their
food.
The day was finished off with a trip to the centres café and shop, where ice-creams were the order
of the day. Everyone agreed that it had been a great day out .

PENSILVA W.I AUGUST MEETING REPORT
The August meeting of Pensilva W.I was held at Penharget Farm, the home of our
president Frances Tucker and her husband David. We started the evening with a
short talk by David who told us some of the history of the farm and of the people
who have farmed there in the past. Although not the original farm house the farm
is mentioned in old parish records. We then all climbed into a purpose built trailer
to be shown around the farm. Having a close up encounter with a heard of inquisi-
tive young bullocks was a new experience for some of our members, but thankful-
ly from the safety of a trailer. We were then taken to see the sheep and the potato
fields. David explained about the meat and potato production and the growing
processes it has to go through before it reaches our plates.
Then it was back to the farm for a real barn supper in one of the big barns used for
storing grain. Frances had laid out tables with table cloths and flowers on the ta-
bles. After a short meeting when birthday posies where presented to four members
including Frances, we all enjoyed a lovely supper. Frances and David and their
family where warmly thanked by Jean Hoare for a very enjoyable evening which
I’m sure we will all remember for a long time to come.
We were reminded of some forthcoming events most importantly our Horticultur-
al Show on the Saturday 14th September 2.15pm at Millennium House . This year
it will be opened by Sheryll Murray M.P. The show is open to all so please sup-
port this village event. Schedules are available from Millennium House or mem-

Registered Charity 207720 Hear to Help – 1 Year on: Hello Everyone – I find it hard to believe that we have been run-ning our hearing aid support drop-in service at Millennium House for a whole year now, how the time has flown! I just wanted to take this opportunity to say thank you to all those who have come along and made use of our service and to remind those of you who haven’t yet paid us a visit that we are still there. The drop-in is on the 1st Wednesday of the month between 10.00 and 12.30pm and you can find us upstairs just by the gym. We can clean, re-tube and provide you with batteries, unfortunately we cannot repair or re-tune the hearing aid. Nick and Liz are the regular volunteers who run the drop-in and they can also provide you with information and advice on getting the best out of your aids and other useful equipment. If you haven’t got hearing aids but have concerns about your hearing drop-in for a chat and take away some free information. Other local Drop In service :- Liskeard. Oak Tree Surgery (2nd Thurs 2.00 – 4.30pm) Launceston Medical Centre ( 2nd Friday 2.00 - 4.30pm ) Torpoint. Hi everyone,
Well at last the park has been officially opened! It is lovely to
see so many children of all ages enjoying the park including
many from other towns and villages. We have received many
compliments so I think we can say the project is a success! The
children’s faces have made the hard work so worthwhile. We
have had good media coverage so far on ITV Westcountry, Ra-
dio Cornwall, Radio Plymouth and The Cornish Times which
has been an experience!
I would like to thank the whole community for their patience
and support in what has been a very intense project from start to
finish. However the team around us have made it very enjoyable and rewarding. On behalf of
myself, Vicki and Keira, I would like to thank all of our committee, parents, councillors and
children who contributed to our lovely cards, gifts and flowers. They really were a lovely sur-
prise!
Although our committee have completely managed this project, I would like to point out we
have had fantastic support from Cornwall and St Ive Parish Councillors. They have given us a
free rein at all times and responded to our wishes and demands promptly! In particular I
would like to personally thank Peter Dipper, Steph McWilliam, Paddy Long and John Turner
for being such great mentors. Also, thanks to Angela Fisher for her input with administration.
It has been a real pleasure to watch the children and teenagers play on the numerous pieces of
equipment with smiles on their faces and the vast majority are treating the equipment with the
respect it deserves. It is great to see older and younger children playing together, side by side.
Congratulations to those teenagers who are helping to litter pick and let younger children
have their turn. Many of those I have spoken to are aware of the importance of preserving the
life of our park. We do hope that in the future good behaviour will be rewarded with further
projects to provide extra recreational facilities. However, should anyone witness any unrea-
sonable behaviour towards others or the equipment, please do report this to the Parish Council
via the telephone number on the sign or at Millennium House as those involved will be held
responsible.
I must also remind you of those companies who have provided grant funding without which
this project would not have been possible. In particular, Viridor Credits and SITA Cornwall
Trust who provided the majority of our funds through the Landfill Communities Trust. Also,
thanks to the Cornwall Councillors Community Chest and the Caradon Area Community
Fund. I will publish a full list of contributors in the next update!
At time of writing, “A Taste of Thai” recipe books are still available at Pensilva Stores!
This project is not over as we would like to provide picnic benches, fencing and a path so bye
for now but watch this space!!

The main event of the last few weeks was Shaun Prout’s marathon row on
Pensilva Gala Day. Assisted by his support team of Mel, Barbs and Gra-
ham, Shaun completed the marathon distance of over 42 km (26 miles +)
in a similar time to last year. This is the third time Shaun has trained for
and completed a marathon on our indoor rowers and he continues to be
an inspiration to us all.
Meanwhile, out on the field, we ran our usual cake and tombola stalls.
Many, many thanks to everybody who helped by baking cakes and donat-
ing prizes. Things came to an abrupt halt when we had to run for cover
from a sudden downpour! On the plus side we got back in the gym just in
time to see Shaun complete his marathon.
Nine teams attended the Gala Week quiz, which was won by 50/50!
Hearty congratulations to them for setting the standard with a brilliant
105.5 from a possible 130 points. Behind them an excellent result for
Three plus One on 97 points, followed by In for a Laugh and The Quiet
Ones on 96½. A special mention for Quizinga who were the winners of the
evening’s other prize and made a spirited and lively contribution to the fes-
tivities! We would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who at-
tended this event and especially our regular teams for their support
throughout the year. The next quiz is on September 21st.
In the gym itself things are a bit quieter during August but perhaps the dip
has not been quite as sever as other years. Still, it would be wonderful to
see more of you in there!
Keep well.

PENSILVA GALA WEEK
What a good week we had, starting with the car treasure hunt. 13 cars went out and had an en-
joyable afternoon. The winners were “Must Dash”. Rain, rain and more rain on Monday for
the media and sports day, at least we were able to come indoors for that. Family skittles was
held in the Function Room in the evening. Kids and adults both enjoyed this event. The kids
quiz on Tuesday afternoon was a success with the under 10’s winners being “Vipers” and the
over 10’s being “Reem Team”. In the evening the adults had their turn to show how clever
they were, the winners of this quiz was 50/50. The Arts & Crafts afternoon on Wednesday saw
over 60 children once again having a great time. The kids film evening was again well attend-
ed.
The children loved the Bingo afternoon on Thursday so I think it may be happening again
next year, keep your dabbers handy!! There was a few less people at the BHF Bingo on
Thursday evening, but everyone had a good time. Well done Keith and thanks for your sup-
port. Thanks to the Football Club for putting on Friday evening’s Donkey Derby. Once again
adults and kids
really enjoyed this event, hopefully a lot of money was raised for them.
Then we came to the Big Day starting with the Farmers Market. This was fol-
lowed by the grand opening of the Sunflower Park. The Fancy Dress was judged
by councillor Peter Dipper, results were in the Cornish Times along with 6 photos,
one of which was our very own Royalty for the day. Along with the various events
on the field we had a baby show indoors which was well attended. The best baby
in show was Scarlet May McCarthy. The Grand Draw was held at 4.30pm. We do
have some unclaimed prizes, a list of numbers is in this edition of the Pump and
on the notice board at Millennium House.
Well all I need to do now is thank everyone that helped in any way and I hope
everyone enjoyed the weeks activities. I look forward to next years Carnival
Week, bigger and better we hope. Ruth Hicks
