MALLIA’S MOMENTS
By Fr. Joe Mallia
Happy July 4th! I know it is not until the end of the week,
but since I may not see most of you before next Saturday, I
thought I would offer my wishes for a happy and safe holiday
weekend. If you ask most people when was the Declaration
of Independence signed, they would tell you July 4, 1776, but
that would be incorrect. The declaration was approved on
that date, but it was not signed until August 2, 1776.
The reason I point that out is to help make the point that
most of us think we have a basic knowledge of history and
various other subjects, including religion. The truth is that we
have some knowledge but often that knowledge is infused
with old tales, half truths and some fiction.
Most people, for example, will say that St. Paul was
knocked off a horse on the road to Damascus, though no
horse is mentioned and horses were not even a popular mode
of transportation at that time. He is often depicted that way in
paintings and so the story is told that way, but it clearly is not
biblical. Take for example the Adam and Eve story. Most
people will tell you they ate an apple, though no apple is
mentioned. No specific type of fruit is even mentioned, to be
honest. The list could go on and on about what people think
is true and what is actually recorded in history.
The lack of clarity in what we know and what we think we
know is part of the problem in how people approach their faith
and their relationship with God. People will tell you that God
is merciful and so God forgives everyone of their sins.
Though it is true that God is merciful and forgives sin, it is
equally true that we must repent of our sins and seek to turn
away from sin. Both of those things are necessary to
experience the mercy and forgiveness of God.
Each person is responsible to learn more
about their faith and be able to know the
difference between fact and partial truth. In
knowing what is or is not true helps us to clearly
know what God is calling us to and how we need
to proceed in faith. Take for example if you
were asked to go to a specific location and you
have a general idea of where it might be. You
take off without a definite path to follow, only
your suspected route. After hours of wandering
aimlessly, you realize you are lost. When you
finally ask for directions, you discover the path is
easy to follow and you quickly arrive at your
destination. So, too is this the case in faith.
Our destination is heaven and eternal life.
Jesus has clearly shown us the path to eternal
life and what the path is to get to heaven. We
may have a general idea, but that could result in
us getting off track and possibly lost. The
readings remind us that it may be hard to follow
Jesus, but St. Paul clearly teaches us how to
give our lives to Jesus. He reminds us of our
baptism and that through this sacrament we died
to sin with the hope of resurrection. We must
not allow sin to dominate our lives, we can’t give
in to sin. Christ gave up everything so that we
can be redeemed; we must be willing to give up
sin so that we can be with him in heaven.
Don’t allow what you think is right to be your
guide. Know what is right. Open up your Bible
and read the New Testament. Read for yourself
the words of Jesus. Study them and pray with
them. Eternal life is too important to base
getting there on what you guess or think or
heard from someone once or might have read in
a book or God forbid, saw in a movie.

MALLIA’S MOMENTS Continued from Page 1
CSA
Just a reminder that CSA this year will be coming
up in September and the information will be directly
mailed to your home from the AOD. You will be
able to pledge or donate by mail, on-line or on the
phone. You are asked to simply do what you have
pledged or donated in the past. Since the goal of
each parish has been reduced because of the virus,
your same level of participation will be of greater
benefit to our parishes. If you have never
participated in the CSA before, this would be a
great time to help out our parish through this way.
Families of Parishes
You may have heard about this new approach to
leadership within parishes moving into the future.
At this point, there are many things that are being
studied and that is the point we are at as an
archdiocese; studying. The primary focus is how do
we provide proper leadership to parishes, access to
the sacraments, proper lay professional ministry
and respecting the integrity of each parish.
As details come forward you will be kept abreast
of those details. Please pray for all the priests as
we go through a very intense process of planning
for our best way to serve you long into the future.
Festival at St. Augustine
It is the plan to have the festival at St. Augustine
again this year like we normally do with only a couple
of minor changes, for example we will not be having
the Flea Market. I encourage you to plan to support
the festival in any way you can this year. The funds
raised by the festival are important revenue for our
parish and school. Please look for your raffle tickets
in the mail and for other ways that you may be able
to help with your time, talent and treasure.
Thank you for your support of our Corpus Christi event
I wanted to again thank all of you who helped plan
or who participated in the walk. I believe it was the
best experience I have had with the walk these last
four years. I hope that you will do your best to make
it an even greater event in the future.
I also wanted to thank all those from Holy Family
who purchased and returned their raffle tickets. Your
support was outstanding and exceed all our
expectations. Thank you. I wish to express my
gratitude to the Wessel family for their coordination of
the events at the church, for the mass and after and to
all those who cooked and prepared a very nice picnic
lunch. Thank you again to everyone.
Have a great week and God bless you all.
Fond Farewell to
F. Joe
St. Augustine and Holy Family parish families are invited to
say your personal good-byes and wish Fr. Joe well in his
new assignment. A farewell reception for Fr. Joe will be held
at each parish on:

following the 11:00 a.m. Mass
at St. Augustine

Q: I am confused by the teaching of the
Church on spreading the ashes of a
deceased loved one in light of the practice
of dividing the remains of saints and
scattering them throughout the world
called "relics." This seems like a
contradiction.
A: Relics usually involve small portions of the body, such
as bone fragments to be reserved for veneration. The
entire body of a saint is not “scattered” throughout the
world, or even scattered locally as would be with
scattering ashes.
Relics of a saint are retained for veneration as a physical
and visual memory. Scattered ashes are spread in order
to disappear and return to the elements. And while some
may find this meaningful, the result is that any physical
reminder of the person is lost, quite the opposite from a
relic.
With a relic, the physical presence of a small portion of
the body is treated with reverence, just as a grave
site would be. Prayers are often said in the presence of
a relic in recognition of the saint. This is not the case
with scattered ashes. Neither scattered ashes nor the
place of their dispersal receive the same kind of
veneration. In fact, ashes may be walked on by people
who are unaware of their presence, perhaps even by
animals. The current practice of the Church, out of
respect for ancient Christian practice and current
sensibilities, is to insist that human remains of any sort
be buried or entombed. The Order of Christian Funerals
has this to say about the disposition of cremated bodies:
“The cremated remains should be buried in a grave or
entombed in a mausoleum or columbarium designed for
urns containing ashes of the dead.” The practice of
scattering cremated remains on the sea, from the air, or
on the ground, or keeping cremated remains in the home
of a relative or friend of the deceased are not the
reverent disposition that are afforded relics.
Please send your questions to:
Prayer for the Dead
God our Father,
Your power brings us to birth,
Your providence guides our lives,
and by Your command we return to dust.
Lord, those who die still live in Your presence,
their lives change but do not end.
I pray in hope for my family,
relatives and friends,
and for all the dead known to You alone.
In company with Christ,
Who died and now lives,
may they rejoice in Your kingdom,
where all our tears are wiped away.
Unite us together again in one family,
to sing Your praise forever and ever. Amen.

The Festival Committee has de-
termined that the festival will take
place this year, with a few modifi-
cations. Being mindful of current
guidelines, we plan to host all
activities outdoors under the tent.
Unfortunately, we cannot have
the Flea Market this year, but
we will have the raffle, as usu-
al, so watch for your ticket
packets in church. Any ticket
packets not picked up in
church will be mailed to your
home.
It is estimated that the packets
will be available in church by
June 28th. Watch for more de-
tails in future bulletins.
In observance of Independence Day,
St. Augustine Parish Office will be
closed Friday, July 3rd, 2020.
Enjoy a safe and restful holiday!

Rosary for Life, Our Country
and the K of C
The Knights of Columbus will be reciting the rosary on
the second Saturday of the every month. Everyone is
invited to join us. This is a critical time for our country
and our church and we have to do our part for both.
Our Blessed Mother told us in numerous visitations in
the twentieth century that we must pray for peace. The
rosary, in the past, has worked miracles when the

St. Augustine School
Graduation Essay by Abby Dobrasko
I remember always thinking that it would be forever
until I got to be in 8th grade. But now, this school year
has flown by so fast. My brothers have graduated from
here, and now I am the last Dobrasko to graduate from
this school. I greatly appreciate it here, and I have
learned so many great life lessons. There are so many
incredible people here. With this 8th grade class, we
have had so many fun times together and we have all
grown so close.
There are so many memories that I have of this
school and its amazing staff. Everyone here is so kind
and cares so much about you. One of my oldest
memories of this school is doing lunchtime duty with my
mom when I was in preschool. I remember sitting down
in the cafeteria, and I would color in my coloring book.
I would watch all the big kids get their lunches, and I’d
be so scared by them because they were all so tall. It is
crazy to think that now we are those big kids for the
preschoolers and kindergarteners. After we would finish
lunch duty, we would go to the office to sign out, and
Mrs. Rey would always have a jar that had Dum-Dum
suckers in it. I would always get a sucker before I left,
and that was what lit up my day each time I went.
My last three years here have been amazing. Those
three teachers have guided me through middle school
and have prepared us all for high school. Doing skits
and fun group projects on topics of history and religion
are some of the ways that Miss Pecorilli has done to
help us understand the material in a fun way.
Mrs. Savoyard has made sure we have had fun learning
the material in science through fun labs and group
projects. Along with fun projects and labs, she has
made sure that we had a good grasp on the information
that we are learning about. I love how Mrs. Nader will
take time to read a chapter of a book to us to get our
minds off of things in class. Everyone here has made
this school feel like home to me. The staff and teachers
have been so kind and caring. They have all taught me
what devotion to God is like.
Many of us in this class have been together since
preschool or kindergarten, and many have come along
the way. I feel like I’ve known these people my whole
life, and they are now family to me. Everyone in this
class has been so kind, and I know that I can lean and
count on them. This school is truly amazing.
Last but not least, I would like to say thank you to my
mom and dad. They are two amazing people that have
taught me to be strong in my faith. They have always
made sure that they would get me to sports and
activities on time. Thank you for making sure that my
brothers and I would go to a good school. They know
that I would have to go to a different school for high
school, and they sent me here so that I would get a
strong foundation in my faith and that I would know why
I’m Catholic. By sending me to this school, I have met
wonderful people and friends that I will never forget.
Graduation Essay by Henry Grace
After three years, St. Augustine feels like home. I am
so blessed to be a part of St. Augustine. It has advanced
me in my academics and it has given me a new family. It
is more than just a regular school though. It has also
opened me up to my relationship with Christ and has
taught me how to live through Christ. All of these amazing
blessings are what make me. Now, why don’t I tell you a
little more about my time here as a St. Augustine Saint.
First and foremost, I would like to thank everyone that
has helped me along the way. I would first like to thank
my incredible family. They mean everything to me. They
are always there for me and support me when I need
them the most. The fact that they even send me to this
amazing school means so much to me. Thank you, Mom,
Dad, and Stella for everything you do for me day-in and
day-out. I appreciate and love you guys so much.
Next, I would like to thank my teachers. I have had
three wonderful teachers in my time at St. Augustine,
Ms. Pecorilli, Mrs. Savoyard, and Mrs. Nader, who inspire
me to be the best version of myself. They bring out the
good in everyone and know how to get a laugh out of us.
They find ways to make our lessons fun and creative
such as playing jeopardy, doing science labs, or making
skits. But most importantly, they work tirelessly to meet
our needs and concerns. Thank you Ms. Pecorilli,
Mrs. Savoyard, and Mrs. Nader for not just everything you
have done for me, but everything you have done for our
school.
Now, I would like to thank Fr. Joe and Fr. John.
Fr. Joe and Fr. John have helped me grow closer to
Christ. They have helped me understand the Word of
God and have opened me up to God’s plan for me. I was
not born into a Catholic family, so I didn’t know much
about the Catholic faith. However, Fr. Joe and Fr. John
have helped me find my path for my life and I can’t wait to
be part of Jesus’ discipleship and become Catholic. So,
thank you Fr. Joe and Fr. John for making God’s path for
me clear.
One of the things I will miss the most about
St. Augustine is that I will be leaving behind my
St. Augustine family. I will miss coming into school and
seeing all the faces I see almost every single day. I will
miss the jokes, the laughs, the bad times, the good times,
morning prayer, and especially the people. But, when I
think about it, I really won’t be sad. I will be happy about
all the great memories I have had here at St. Augustine.
I want to say one last thank you to everyone that has
helped me in my time at St. Augustine. You have shown
me so much kindness and have made my experience
wonderful. I will miss all the great times I have had at
St. Augustine, but I will always have a special place in my
heart for all the memories I have had. Times pass, but
memories last.
