The Kingdom of God is at Hand

As he passed by the Sea of Galilee, he saw Simon and his brother Andrew casting their nets into the sea; they were fishermen.

Jesus said to them, “Come after me, and I will make you fishers of men.” Then they abandoned their nets and followed him.

He walked along a little farther and saw James, the son of Zebedee, and his brother John. They too were in a boat mending their nets. Then he called them.

So they left their father Zebedee in the boat along with the hired men and followed him.

Sacramental Life Baptism To have a child baptized, parents must register and attend a class as a couple. Try to attend before your child is born. At least one parent and godparent must be practicing Catholics. Please call or email the church office for information or to register.

Confession The priest is available for Penance at St. Bernadette on Saturdays at 8:30 AM and 3:00 PM, and on Thursdays at 5:30 PM. Confessions are offered Sundays at St. Mary Bremen at 8:00 AM. Every Catholic priest is available whenever needed.

Anointing and Care of the Sick The priest gives the Anointing of the Sick to one who is dangerously ill, facing major surgery, or suffering from the ravages of old age. Call the parish office to inform us if a loved one is in need of pastoral care in sickness, particularly with an extended absence from attending Mass.

Holy Matrimony Couples wishing to marry should contact the parish office six months before a wedding. Why so long? Because this Sacrament, not just the ceremony, requires serious preparation. And the Church needs to be involved in that preparation. The Church needs to support couples through the years of married life and offers programs to enhance married life. To learn about these programs, watch the bulletin.

Eucharistic Adoration Eucharistic Adoration takes place each Wednesday at St. Bernadette with Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament at 9:00 AM and Benediction and Reposition at 2:00 PM. Exposition also takes place each Thursday at St. Bernadette from 7:00 PM through the night until Friday at 8:00 AM. On the first Thursday of the month we offer a Eucharistic Holy Hour at St. Mary in Bremen after the morning Mass. All are welcome to come as you are able, or stop in for prayer anytime.

Collar Corner

We celebrate our Catholic Schools in a special way next week. This school year we’ve seen the heroic efforts of parents, teachers, staff, and benefactors come through to continue the work of the spiritual formation of the next generation. We should be at once both profoundly grateful and profoundly proud for their sacrifices. God reward each and every one! St. Thomas Aquinas, whose feast we celebrate this week, is among their historic patrons.

Next week the season of Septuagesima beings in the older, traditional calendar. It is a pre-Lenten preparatory time to avoid spiritual procrastination. Start bringing some ideas before the Lord for how you will make the best Lent of your life now.

There will be a Latin Mass at 8:20 AM on February 2nd at St. Bernadette for Candlemas, the Purification of Our Lady upon the Presentation of Our Lord in the Temple, to conclude the Christmas cycle 40 days after His birth.

Although the March for Life has been effectively cancelled this year, we should still join in spirit to witness to our nation the urgency of the preeminent moral issue of our age.

In Our Lord and Our Lady,

Father Tomson

Mass Schedule: Provisional Additions Because we are experiencing increased Mass attendance on Sundays at 10:00 AM, now there is also Mass at 11:30 AM (Tridentine High Mass) and at 7:30 PM (simple quiet Mass).

May He Rest in Peace In your charity, please pray for the repose of the soul of Robert Bruno, Sr. (father of Rob Bruno), who died earlier this month. Eternal rest grant unto him, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon him. May his soul, and the souls of all the faithful departed, rest in peace. Amen

Fifth Sunday: St. Vincent de Paul Members of the Lancaster St. Vincent de Paul Society will be at the church doors after Masses on January 30 and 31 to receive your donations. They will be standing outside to enable social distancing. Please be generous. They operate entirely on income from their store and your voluntary donations.

St. Mary Middle School News St. Mary Middle School students have reached the end of their first full semester of school. Report cards are posted on Digital Academy. Their middle school houses will begin meeting in-person starting second semester. The house system has met “virtually” for the first half of the year, but as with so many other virtual experiences - it’s just not the same. Students will continue to wear masks and be required to physically distance themselves - but at least they will be in the same room with each other! Catholic Schools Week will take place Sunday, January 31, to Friday, February 5; it is the annual celebration of Catholic education in the U.S. Watch St. Mary Middle School social media (Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter) for news and pictures of the week’s activities. To learn more about Catholic middle school education, please call (740) 654-1632. The staff can answer questions and give school tours. They are grateful for the opportunity to share the Good News of the church with their students every day; this would not be possible without the continued support of their parishes, parents and families.

What's the Buzz? Over the year, we've been bringing you updates on the 4th grade garden tower. What started out as seeds, dirt and light is now providing produce! This week, St. Bernadette School 4th graders harvested and tasted different types of lettuce and herbs. They also enjoyed making salsa using fresh cilantro! What a great hands-on and culinary experience! See photos on the back page.

Catholic Foundation Reflection “Follow me and I will make you fishers of men.” - Mark 1:17 Jesus’s call to “Follow Me” is a call to all Christians! The call is in the here and now, in our present circumstances, not when we think we are “ready” or have everything in order. Good stewardship of our God-given gifts means that things aren’t always going to go according to our schedule and that God has a much better plan in store for each of us. Learn how you can share your gifts to support your parish and contact The Catholic Foundation. Visit www . catholic-foundation.org/ development.
